While trolls and lefties delighted in the MuLaw poll released the day of the debate showing Obama up 11 points...

Apparently that gap shrank drastically in the 48 hours since (and to compare apples to apples, Romney trailed Obama by 7 in the last PPP poll two weeks ago, so still a clear, obvious drop).

All of Obama's gains in the purple states through September have been wiped out by a 90 minute ass-stomping.

To the moron horde, I ask that you use lotion when that thought fully sinks in.

I ask you get a Costco-size when you think further: Ryan debates Biden in 5 days.

8 Bush had a big lead on Kerry going into the debate - almost 10 points, I think. Bush's nonchalant performance in that first debate would have cost him the election had it not been for record turnout on our side. Obama had a much smaller lead going into the debate, got crushed much worse than Bush, plus it was one of Romney's only times to speak to the American people without the insane media filter on. Just devastating to Obama. I don't think he recovers.

13 I'm not entirely sure that Ryan will wow Biden the way that Romeny blew out Obama.  Not because Ryan isn't utterly prepared or not right in  his positions, but because he will be going up against a prepared professional and well seasoned politician who has no problem what so ever lying and lying boldly and who will show no shame if called into account over his lies but will turn around and repeat the same lie again and again.  And Biden is real good at repeating lies even if he knows they are lies.

14 Question for CAC. Has Republican registration in North Carolina dropped since 2008? I'm asking because early voting is up substantially in that state(+52.55%) in relation to this time 4 years ago. However, the percentage of the vote so far id'ng itself as Republican is actually down (53% compared to 57% in '0 .

24 What a difference a debate makes.  Our polling firm was finding nearly even numbers in FL a week or so back.  Today, we blew up the phones all across FL.  Brutal numbers for Obama.  Simply brutal.

Nelson is in pretty decent shape, though.

I was amused to see a picture of her from 1935, which was notable because it was the only picture ever taken of her that had the slightest hint of sex appeal or what we would call "cool." The service was cathartic. I cried more than I thought I would, especially during the interrment. My one selfish thought was that I wonder about her absentee ballot. Did she cast one? Ask for one? And if not... How will the Rhode Island machine have her voting?

41 Mulaw poll is waaaay oversampling democrats in their polling. Even moreso than in 2008. They also oversampled minorities and women. We have recent exit polling from THIS YEAR AND 2010 showing minorities, women and democrats to be a much lower percent of the population than in their recent polling. Most exit polls from Wisconsin EXCLUDING 2008 have republicans tied or 1-3% higher than democrats.

From ye olde Wikipedia: "According to the 2010 Census, 86.2% of the population was White (83.3% non-Hispanic white), 6.3% was Black or African American, 1.0% American Indian and Alaska Native, 2.3% Asian, 1.8% from two or more races. 5.9% of the total population was of Hispanic or Latino origin (they may be of any race)" With an approximate 50/50 split in Latino/Black (who make up the vast majority of non-whites, this would mean that Romney is either way ahead amongst Latinos, or Obama is doing really bad with blacks - or a little of both. This aint' gonna be 2008 redux...

Even before Wednesday, if you had looked at the internals from polls in swing states like OH, FL, VA and NC, Romney was winning the Independent vote with a comfortable margin and the only reason Obama was winning or tied in some of those states was the ridiculous oversampling of Dems. Two things are happening now. One, the polls are starting to reflect more realistic turnouts as we get closer to the election and the pollsters search for some credibility and two, Romney has become a real alternative for more people after Wednesday in the way Reagan became real after clocking Carter. This is now Romney's race to lose and there is no reason to believe he will.

As a Michigander living in Wayne County outside Detroit...don't get your hopes up. There is barely any enthusiasm for Obama here, but Mitt isn't on anybody's radar, either. Haven't seen a single Romney ad that I can recall, and Obama ads were on every commercial break until recently (now it's down to about every OTHER commercial break).

I have hopes that my state will be red one day, but I fear 2012 won't be it.

My Wisconsin Badgers has been just the opposite for the last 15 years, they run the ball down your throat for 4 quarters. They always have an incredible offensive line that just wears out most defenses. To beat them you have to be going into the second half with a minimum two touchdown lead.  But like WV, it wins tons of games but will never win a national championship.

The difference in this one will be, Ryan won't knows every subject inside out (maybe not quite as strong on forgiven policy but still leaps and bounds ahead of Biden) and Biden won't be able to just make shit up when his mind goes blank.  And I know Biden is going to lose control at sometime, his self righteousness will demand it and at that point Ryan will embarrass him by pointing out either the fallacy of his statement or the ridiculousness of it. China as a military threat? No, China as an economic threat.

Egypt and the Middle East? Why are we giving them billions of dollars?

Obama can talk about American image and nuance, but heartland voters want the focus HERE. We are about to fork over more than a billion to Pakistan. That's the kind of thing that most Americans are going to side with the candidate questioning, rather than the candidate apologizing.

224 Here's what I've wondered since the debate...Obama did poorly because he didn't prepare properly and take it as seriously as he needed to, but also because he only knows how to do his generic stump speech, speak generalities and through out the occasional half-fact soundbite. Can he really change his nature in the little time before the next debate? Assuming is were possible, it would take a lot of work to memorize stats and facts, reduce the nervous "uhs" and such, etc...does he have the discipline and desire to do all that work? At first, I thought he'd improve and the next two debates would be a lot closer, but the more I think about it, the more difficult I find it to believe he's really going to crack down, work hard and find someone to challenge him effectively, and in the same way Romney will. I'm naturally Eeyore-ish on things, but the more I wargame this out, the more fired-up I get!

Ryan himself has said that Biden doesn't make gaffes during debates. (Although I'm praying he does this time.) I don't think Ryan is treating this as a cakewalk.

That said, I'm not buying the argument that if Biden manages not to embarrass himself, that means he wins. Much of the country still doesn't know Ryan. He's been portrayed by the Obama campaign as a mean Randian who wants to push grandma off the cliff. When Ryan shows up being polished and affable as well as in command of math, looking like the midwestern boy next door, he's going to impress people. Just as Romney demolished the "callous rich guy" persona constructed by the Obama campaign, so too will Ryan destroy the image of the "cold numbers wonk." He doesn't have to be mean to Biden (which would be a mistake), although he does have to raise the BS flag when Biden lies. Ryan will do a fine job being Ryan.

242 @219 - the big problem with the Volt aesthetically is the high beltline and those fake-window black areas under the windows.   Otherwise, it's not bad.  And mechanically it's not bad either.  It's a good concept, and reasonably well executed, if you excuse the fact they can't build at a price that makes its sales profitable.

And let's reconfirm one point: the Volt is not an electric car.  It's a series hybrid.

The Nissan Leaf is an electric car, and it's the current object lesson in what happens when  you try to build an EV down to a price point. 

Most EVs have actively-cooled battery packs (water or air circulated through the pack, controlled by a temperature-monitoring system.)

Nissan cheaped out.  They decided they could get away with a passively-cooled battery pack.

The problem is that while they were running around advertising a 100-mile range, a real-world best-case is more like 65.  And, because of the passive cooling, conditions outside that best-case (high or low temperatures, extreme current draw, etc.) both drain the battery faster than would be the case with an actively-cooled pack, and shorten the pack's life considerably.

Both sides know to a great degree of detail how someone will vote based on characteristics that can be mined from large databases (Facebook, anyone). All an election is in 2012 is turning out your demographic. It's not about convincing anyone--it's about making sure anyone who is even weakly leaning to you comes out to vote for you. That's the new political strategy of the 21st century. Suppress your opponent, but turn out your guys. My guess is that's what R et al are thinking. O et al used Clinton to suppress R thought in September, but the debates put the onus squarely on O. "You've been president for four years." If you and your neighbors and your kids are out of work or underemployed,  that number doesn't mean squat.   And when you factor in sky-high food and gas prices,  it really isn't relevant.

Greg also might consider that some of the papers and TV people,  who have been carrying Obama's water for almost 4 years,  are probably pissed that after all the help they have given him,  he didn't even bother to show up on debate night,  standing there like a complete idiot (which he is). A new poll shows Mitt Romney flipping a 5-point deficit in Colorado before the first presidential debate, which was held on Wednesday in Denver, to a 3.5-point advantage later in the week — another signal that Mr. Romney's comparatively strong debate performance has started to translate into rising poll numbers for the Republican.

A poll from Gravis Marketing, conducted Oct. 3-4, shows Mr. Romney with a 49.4 percent to 45.9 percent lead over Mr. Obama. The president had held nearly a 5-point lead in a poll conducted Sept. 25, at 50.2 percent to 45.5 percent.

Mr. Obama's job approval numbers are also significantly underwater in the new poll: 40.5 percent approve, while 50.9 percent disapprove. Just 36.8 percent of voters say the country is on the right track, compared to 53.5 percent who think it's on the wrong track.

And, btw, why is Obama on the air already with an ad focused on the debate and Romney's "lies" when Romney, who did so well, can't come up with one? The Romney campaign is always passive and late, even when they have an advantage.

Obama had one of the worst debate performances since debates have been televised and Romney one of the best. Thats not conjecture, its been born out by survey after survey. Over 65 million Americans saw the bloodbath and things have been inalterably changed. Much as you try to down play it, this wasn't a single data point, this was a defining moment in the campaign and gave many people who have been waiting for a reason to vote against Obama the reason they needed. Obama is desperate to change the subject or play down the event, thus the advertising. Romney is content to let the event speak for itself and is surging because of it. Your arguments are pathetic. You haven't even bothered to try and refute the early voting numbers where Obama is getting crushed. And these aren't trivial numbers, over 30% of all votes are early and absentee. Your lack of understanding of how elections actually work is pathetic. No wonder you are wrong so often.

Greg, although I was sick today, a friend volunteered at R/R HQ in Whitefish Bay (northern Milwaukee county). She reported they were swamped, the place was packed. And all the talk was about the huge ass-kicking your Lord Jesus took the other night. There was also a brisk business in lawn signs and bumper stickers. So, spin 'til you're dizzy, my ditzy little East Side neighbor, lie your head off - you know damn right well Chocolate Jesus is in trouble.

 BTW, Greggie, check out the house on the corner of Ivanhoe and Terrace, with the huge R/R sign, guaranteed to give little East Side leftist pukes like you the runs. I've seen R/R signs in unlikely places - the East Side and Shorewood. Reminds me of the Walker recall. But I'm not seeing a whole lot of bambi signs.

350 Wisconsin Indies in presidential years usually break to the democrat. It also is becoming weekend polling so expect dem and moderate heavy sampling skews. Almost every weekend Rasmussen shows a bump for Obama. We'll see what happens this weekend. Don't think the "jobs" report will do anything, it hasn't in the past when it was bad for Obama.

351 Here's hoping this keeps up. We know Ryan vs. Biden will look like a UFC highlight reel, but hopefully Romney can keep it up for his next two. Anything less than what we saw on Wed will be seen, in the media, as a loss for Romney, and unfortunately any media help, even in their snide way, can push this election. Heres hoping in an attempt to get a boost Barack decides to call up the NY Jets to get a pep talk.

Given Romney has 92% of Rs, SCOAMF 89% of Ds, and the I vote is 51%-42% SCOAMF,....

 

The recent polling, both in Wisconsin and nationwide, was supposedly showing a Pubbie enthusiasm gap, with SCOAMF winning more Ds than Romney winning Rs.

I don't think Obama is up that much with Indy's in WI. I think Wisconsin comes down to the crossover vote in WI-01. I think Romney will do well enough in WI-07 and WI-08 to offset WI-03.

So will the good people of WI-01 vote twice for Ryan or will they vote for Obama. That is the question.
