York: Romney goes bold.

RomneyÂ’s gamble is that in the midst of an economic downturn, voters are ready to accept RyanÂ’s prescription for fixing the federal budget, in particular his proposals for reforming Medicare. Romney and Ryan are right that major changes need to be made, and at some point the voting public will accept that view, too. That day is coming. The question is whether it will arrive by November 6.

Of course Team Obama says it is delighted with Romney’s choice, because they believe they can destroy Ryan’s plan, and in the process the Romney-Ryan candidacy. And it seems likely that at the very least choosing Ryan has made winning Florida a little harder for Romney — and if Romney doesn’t win Florida, he doesn’t become president. What Democrats are overlooking is that Ryan is a truly formidable figure. He not only knows his stuff, he is able to communicate his ideas in a persuasive and appealing way. There’s a very good chance voters will like him. Democrats love to portray Republicans as angry. They won’t be able to do that with Ryan, who doesn’t give off even a hint of anger.

But the fact remains that there has never before been a national debate about entitlements like the one that is coming in this presidential campaign. Mitt Romney has decided itÂ’s time for that debate, and that he can win it. ThatÂ’s the biggest bet of his candidacy, by a long shot.

1 I saw this post while I was pulling in the headlines earlier. My impression is that the twp neocon mags are supportive of this choice, the news agencies are simply reporting the choice and calling him a "conservative".

As someone said last night, Paul Ryan is often on morning drive-time radio here in Chicago Metro..  the leader in that market, WLS-AM, is all conservative talk format.  So, he's pretty popular here on this side of the Cheddar Curtain.  I would love to see a push for Illinois to go red.. and I would be the first one to volunteer for a GOTV effort.

8 I did not expect this -- the choice, the timing, none of it. Romney/Ryan isn't a bad ticket, but it couldve been better. There is no net gain here. Paul Ryan is articulate and knowledgable. He's also boring and not even remotely close to a bombthrower. in other words it's Obama/Biden vs The Nice Guys.

14 Daily Caller calls out “10 facts” about Paul Ryan.  Personally I am sort of “meh” on this pick.  I never was impressed with his so-called conservative budget plan that everyone raved about.  It was typical Washington “kick the can” that didnÂ’t actually start cutting the budget until 10 years down the road.  Also add to that he really does have some RINO tendencies. His ACU ratings for the past two years are NOT impressive with an 80/96 with a lifetime of 91.7.  So what we have is a NE “moderate” picking a Northern “moderate” as a running mate.  The key question is will it help Romney in the end.  It may help him with WI, although I think he would have got WI anyway.  It may hurt him in other areas though.  But here is what the D.C. says:

I know, he's made speeches, suggested things, its the votes I look at.

Paul Ryan is solid VP for the Romney ticket. Ryan doesn't get off topic spilling beans just because "reporters" squeeze for juice. Is that ship going to be Romney's Military spending story, that it ought to be serviceable, or somehow linked to the lines that military spending makes for jobs, jobs, jobs?

Ryan and Romney should balance the media personality demands from the public. Laura Ingraham said the other week that Romney isn't the politician's politician (Obama was that). This morning's DNC headline is squealing that Ryan has no private sector experience -- like Joe Biden has, pfft. Will Joe shit in his pants during televised live debate with Paul? Got to wonder, how does private sector experience help a VP who is not the Chief Executive, but presides over the Senate as the tie breaker?  (No wonder Condi said no way. Besides, Romney will line her in his Cabinet.)

Too bad, Congress loses Ryan's leadership. Michele Bachmann's twitching to fill that vacuum, economic legislative leadership, from the bookkeeper to the tax lawyer writing bills to meet fiscal conservatism? Personalities aside, it's the agenda that matters. And it isn't just Tea Party voters demanding that the Federal Government quit screwing tax payers. "After the election" better produce lower taxes, no tax funded bail-outs.

As for Romney v. Obama-Totus in debate, Mitt had better produce the juice since '08 "fire in the belly" was his own litmus test for the "best" presidential candidate.

No you are FOS.  It takes a simple majority in the house true, but it takes 2/3 in the Senate and when you have a bunch of "Scottish law" RINOs you may as well say 3/4 which is why I said 3/4 in both houses.

With all deference to Steyn, Obama's bet is he will define Romney to voters now. But that is falling apart already with the lies being uncovered. Roment is still very close in the polls and the strategy is costing Obama in popularity polls.

People have not really been exposed to Romney yet. When they are, they will see quite a contrast and remember Obama and his people were lying.

Then we are going to get around to talking about Obama's dismal record.

Then we are going to talk about Romney's (and now Ryan's) ideas, contrast them and talk about how we know they will be successful.

For Romney to go negative would be a big mistake. Responding factually and forcefully (and appropriately...see his bonehead adviser) is another thing. THey will get better at that as time goes on.

Just read the linked article and what it implies is that, for once, Steyn doesn't know what the fuck he thinks but feels the need to write it down anyway.

It's pretty clear that there is a huge bloc of voters out there -- from both parties -- who will always fall for the inspiring slogan/rainbows-and-unicorns/Morning in America stuff. To win, candidates have to reach them.

Bark Obama has the Race Bloc voters sewed up, as well as the Red Diaper Brigade. Romney can never win them.

We don't need to "kick ass" as much as we need to hammer home two points: 1) What has happened the last four years? and 2) Bark Obama needs to tell the truth.

Those are both legitimate, fact-based questions that should destroy the Choomer-in-Chief if reiterated often enough to get through the addled mass of uninformed voters.

The way to do that is to get on the "live" Sunday shows and live news.  And come back HARD on their lies.  That doesn't mean you have to go nuclear in the campaign on your stuff, you go nuclear on responding to their lies.  By nuclear I mean you don't say the add was "misleading".  You say the ad was an outright lie and the people who made it are liars. Hell even the WSJ is saying that this morning.  After you say the people who made it are liars you detail why it was a lie, then you tie it directly back to Obama. 


WSJ editorial (via NRO) finally says it correctly:

When your candidate is a serial liar it is hard to come up with anything that is true.

I don't think people want "punch back hard" from a Presidential/VP candidate. I believe they want intelligent, thoughtful, factual and verifiable proposals. They want someone who is not divisive (like Congress or the President) the latter who is dropping in the polls due to his attack mentality (IMHO).

Punch back hard is the way Ryan responds to Obama above. With facts that stump the President and for which he has no answers. That makes him look foolish, partisan and inept.

I frankly think Obama would love a punch back hard guy like Christie. That's the fight they really want. It distracts from the real issues  and his horrible record of misery inflicted upon us.

If anyone thinks Paul Ryan won't punch back, they don't know Paul Ryan.  If by "punch back" you mean speak the facts clearly without fear and without backing down, while not losing your cool and not appearing like a jerk.

Of course if you mean by screaming like a jackass, no, he won't do that. 

Either did Scott Walker. Ryan comports himself very much like Scott Walker.  Pleasant, knowledgable, firm, specific and smart.  Like a WINNER.

Watch his speeches. Watch his interactions with OBama and Wasserman-Schultz et al.  Does this look like someone who backs down?

In Stephen Hayes' bio of Ryan in The Weekly Standard last month (linked on Drudge this morning), Trippi compares the attacks on Romney's time at Bain to body blows in a boxing match, and the roundhouse to follow is linking Romney to Ryan's budget proposal, the heartless-Republican meme.

 

I'd just as soon see that issue come to the forefront now and have its most knowledgeable and articulate proponent take it on.  Plus - I love how Ryan gets under Obama's skin.

 

I like the Ryan choice.  A lot.  I didn't expect Romney to make a high-risk, high-reward pick for VP, but he did.

Picking somebody at the forefront of entitlement reform is risky, but you can't have a serious discussion about fixing our deficit/debt problem without tackling entitlement reform.  Mitt is sending a message that he is unafraid to tackle the hard questions associated with the office. 

The added bonus is that he's youthful, articulate, intelligent, and attractive.. a combination that isn't normally associated with GOP candidates.  It gives him some excitement.

Wisconsin is far less remote than Alaska and possesses far more electoral votes. Ryan also is not a kook. Ryan is not Cheney horrible. Wisconsin trumps Wyoming and Ryan is young, healthy and telegenic. Ryan is not Kemp horrible. Ryan actually holds public office and is not retired. Wisconsin is a politically competitive state. Ryan is not Quayle horrible. Ryan won't go deer in the headlights catatonic on us. So on, so forth. By default it's a good veep pick by prior GOP standards, but unfortunately that's akin to winning a race at the Special Olympics. But what's done is done. If Romney is able to get across the finish line in 1st then at least we know who'll be the face of the party for the next few election cycles. Whether or not a campaign can be this inept but still prevail, however, especially against the full weight of the media-union-Democrat machine, at best is questionable. For the country's sake they had better get a lot better at the game of politics. Quickly too.

Yup this is the clip I remembered from those phony "health care summits" or whatever they were called.  The look on Obama's face is priceless, the contempt he feels for Ryan just jumps off the screen....this is a very good pick, Ryan on the ticket will cause some unforced errors by O'Dogeater. 

 

When the campaign was going swimmingly back in 2008 Obama made the off-prompter remark to Joe the Plumber about spreading the wealth around.  The remark about "you didn't build that" came a couple of weeks ago but Obama was still in his bubble, being fed only good news by his drones.

For those who think Ryan is a rinosquish, well, he represents a district in southern Wisconsin that shares its border with northern Illinois.  Many people in Chicago and its suburbs own summer homes and/or retire in that district, and although it has a fair number of family dairy farms and other conservatives, it's not as conservative as up in Green Bay. 

 

From his vantage point on the border, Ryan has had ample opportunity to observe the corrupt hotmess that is Chicago politics.  So he comes into the race already up to speed, not as a newbie who needs to learn the ropes.

I think it's a good pick because I think Ryan is  a sincere man and this grooms him for the presidency in 2020 provided Mittens wins 2 terms.  If there are any negatives it is that we lose Ryan in the House and my guess is crying Boehner will appoint a moron to replace him.

I also think it will depend on how Ryan is utilized.  If Mitt uses Ryan as a Darth Vader-style hatchet man and chief advisor, I think the Ryan choice is good.  If he's a historical VP I think his talents are wasted.
