— Ace Very good piece at NRO. Read the whole thing.
Also, as it stands, useless.
Some think I "panicked" over the weekend and am now getting my bearings back. I don't think that's true -- I feel the same way as I did over the weekend. Worried, not panicked.
I stand by what I wrote earlier: Clinton gave a rebuttal to Romney/Ryan that, while dishonest, will be taken as true by the public unless exposed to its own withering counter-rebuttal.
That's how people operate. If you ask a guy if he stole money from the cash register, and he won't address the point directly, you begin strongly suspecting he did.
Statements not rebutted by someone with a strong personal interest in rebutting them are taken to be true. If the person with the strong personal interest in rebutting the statement could rebut it, he would rebut it, and if he's not rebutting it, it's because he can't.
Everyone thinks like this.
And I think Clinton's speech was powerful, and if Romney/Ryan does not specifically refute it, it will be taken as true by many -- possibly most -- voters.
I certainly think it can be rebutted. The NRO piece, for example, notes things like this:
The Democrats cling to the ridiculous claim that the bailout of GM and its now-Italian competitor, Chrysler, saved 1.5 million U.S. jobs. This preposterous figure is based on the assumption that if GM and Chrysler had gone into normal bankruptcy proceedings, the entire enterprise of automobile manufacturing in the United States would have collapsed — not only at GM and Chrysler but at Ford and foreign transplants such as Toyota and Honda. Not only that, the Democrats’ argument goes, but practically every parts maker, supplier, warehousing agency, and services firm dedicated to the car industry would have collapsed, too. In fact, it is unlikely that even GM or Chrysler would have stopped production during bankruptcy: The assembly lines would have continued rolling, interest and debt payments would have been cut, and — here’s the problem — union contracts would have been renegotiated. Far from having saved 1.5 million jobs, it is not clear that the GM bailout saved any — only that it preserved the UAW’s unsustainable arrangement.Bill Clinton bizarrely tried to claim that the bailout has been responsible for the addition of 250,000 jobs to the automobile industry since the nadir of the financial crisis. Auto manufacturers and dealerships have indeed added about 236,000 jobs since then, but almost none are at GM, which has added only about 4,500 workers, a number not even close to offsetting the 63,000 workers that its dealerships had to let go when the terms of the bailout unilaterally shut them down.
But here's why I say that's useless, as it stands: Because, who sees this? 1, Strong supporters for the conservative ideology (and Romney voters) and 2, a smattering of strong supporters for the liberal ideology (and Obama voters), who read NRO just to keep up on the other guys' attack lines.
If a tree falls in a forest and no one hears it, it has not fallen, for all political purposes.
I'd love to see the various claims of Obama and Clinton run in a Romney add with the words "LIE" or "MISLEADING" popping up, with the actual facts rebutting them.
Especially Clinton's claims about stealing $716 billion from Medicare somehow "shoring it up," or about his implication that Obama's Clinton-like Miracle Economy is just a few months away, just a few months away before we "feel it."
But this GM business is a good place to start.
I'm not panicking, because the Romney campaign has been generally pretty smart about knowing where the problems are, and crafting a way around them/through them.
But I am re-stating my worry about the Clinton Speech, in case they're currently smoking crack and thinking, "Meh, that won't have an impact. Let's just pretend it didn't happen."
By the way, GM -- and thus the taxpayers -- lose $49,000 on every Volt sold, so I guess we should be grateful for such low sales.

Keep up the great work.
The Clinton tv ad running now isn't helping either...The moderate D's and undecideds may be persuaded to take his word for it about Obama.
Take it from me, as someone who was ordered out of her grandfather's house because I dared to speak my non-support for Clinton way back when, these people really trust him and aren't easily shown the light.

As far as the Romney campaign, at several points in the primaries the polling was worse for him against GOP opponents than it is now. This has probably taught them not to panic. It also seems to me, however, that his opponents tended to self-destruct, often with the media's help--largely because they were not-Romneys who voters knew only that fact about and little else. None of this is true about the Big 0.
The chance Obama will self-destruct is very small, especially because the media will minimize any gaffes he makes. (Case in point: The horrible jobs info from last week and his meh speech have been buried by convention momentum stories.) Moreover, people think they know a lot about Obama, so some blunders won't matter like they would with a newbie.
We have to stay enthused enough to write the narrative of this election, rather than let it be written for us.

=============
Anyone and everyone with common sense. A lot of voters understand inutitively the GM bailout was bullshit. Hence the rise of the Tea Party.
From Feb 2012:
(CNN) - As Mitt Romney gets ready to face union protests Friday over his opposition to the 2008-2009 bailouts of the auto industry, two new polls are somewhat at odds over where Americans stand on the issue.
According to a Gallup Poll released Wednesday, 51% of Americans say they disapprove of the financial bailouts for General Motors and Chrysler, which at the time were in danger of failing. Forty-four percent say they approve of the government's action. The survey indicates a partisan divide, with more than six in ten Democrats supporting the bailouts, nearly three-quarters of Republicans opposing them, and independent voters divided, with 45% approving and 50% saying they disapprove of the bailouts

I think that R&R are going to get around to addressing these points, I just think that, with all the lies, disinformation and outright obfuscation going on, it is hard to decide where to start. Romney's whole campaign is based upon the economy, and the damage that Obama and his terrible policies have done to this country. With as much damage as has been done, addressing all of it is going to be a task of epic proportions.
Above all, though, Romney is going to have to make sure that Obama is given full ownership for all of the failures, and not allow Obama to act like someone who just got here, and had no idea what was going on. That seems to be the direction that Obama's campaign is taking.

Posted by: Jay at September 10, 2012 10:26 AM (3LaGb)
Even so, the people at GM whose jobs were saved don't care. They've been bankrupting the company for years to keep their salaries and benefits priced beyond market competitiveness. Why should they feel bad that they've now found a sugar daddy with deeper pockets?
Thus, Romney gets hurt on this issue in places like Detroit. No amount of math can fix that. What he has to do is make Obama pay for that bought-off support elsewhere.
Again, Walker could not win Wisconsin by convincing state employees his reforms were good for them. He had to win by convincing everyone else they were being unsustainably soaked.

I'm not buying into that Clinton did this much damage. Not that many people heard the speech. Many were watching what Snookie was up to or something similar. Even on You-Tube, I'm betting there weren't that many people who watched the whole long, never-ending speech.
Plus, for many people also, when Bubba started talking numbers, it became "blah blah blah blah".
There's not too many people that are political wonks like the people who post here. Most of them see $4/gal gas, $50 for two small bags of groceries, and letters saying that their health insurance company is stopping their coverage because of Ocare.

These guys don't bring knives to gun fights. Clinton's speech was one loooong lie, only loved by folks nostalgic for the good times of the 90's. And Clinton ain't running this time. This halo effect wears off in 3...2...1...
It's a bounce folks. Happens all the time. And it goes away. Obama is below 50% approval in every state that counts this time around, and that's AFTER his convention and millions and millions of dollars spent demonizing Mitt.
Some folks are apparently afraid to win. Mitt isn't.

Good luck. The GOP is loathe to use the term "lie" even when it's obvious. Sure, they'll snicker and euphemize with an assumption that "everyone will get it." Um, no they won't. Soft-peddling with rhetoric provides an out for necessary critique. People will fill in the more passive critique with, "Well that's just politics. I'm pretty sure each side just has a different point of view of the same facts. It's not really a lie because 'lie' wasn't asserted."
Use the word! It won't kill you particularly if you have the facts. The Progressives have been using it and look how much traction they get with it even when they know they're lying about the "lie". You better use the strong language or you won't get a hearing. The term is an alarm. Ring the fookin' alarm!

Seems like there ought to be a place - perhaps in the debates - where they could throw in a zinger that says, basically, "Mr. Obama, you are NO Bill Clinton."
I still find it odd that a president who managed to get elected, despite having been a draft dodger (contrast that record to "w"), who was one of only two ever impeached, and who had what had to be the most embarassing scandal the county has ever seen - is still so popular. Oh, and he literally LOST the nuclear codes. It's really quite astounding, and tells you what we are up against.
And so we are in a position of arguing with a popular guy, who's not making any sense at all, while trying to distance him from Obama, who he supposedly doesn't even like. Yikes.

They have nothing. And don't worry about the Romney campaign figuring out how to answer it. Frankly, I don't think they need to acknowledge Clinton's remarks, at all! Bill Clinton isn't on the ballot, and some sweet drawling words from him aren't going to change the fact that the Dems are trying to reelect the Scoamf.
-------------------------------------------
Come to think of it, I think that's exactly what they want us to start doing. Start running against Clinton like they've tried, even in this election cycle, to run against Bush. Folks, this is just another squirrel.
The focus needs to remain on Baraka, his regime, and the dems.

Here's the deal. One of those two things Romney has direct influence (even power) over if he's elected. On the other, he has only indirect (if still substantial) influence.
The President can (and probably should, considering squishes and Low-info voters) run on "Repeal and Replace." Members of the House and Senate can run on "Repeal Only" based on their own districts.
While winning isn't the point, it's a necessary objective.

102... In fact, the only things IDO remember from either convention is Eastwood, Granholm, and Joe "literally" Biden.
The Empty Chair.....and then, the 'Fear of empty seats in the big Stadium'.
The only constant is the crappy economy and the high gas prices.
Yep. No Jobs...and High Gas Prices.
If the Preezy really cared about these things, he could've done something about them.
Simple things....like allowing the Keystone Pipeline to happen.
That would've been a twofer.
We should be asking...is Barky just incompetent? ...Or is he doing it to us on purpose?

'70 We say "and yet we've lose x million jobs and unemployment is still over 8% after three years. Clearly what President Obama is doing isn't working and its time for a change."
Don't bother to rebut it, its a lie but its irrelevant, the economy is in horrible shape and everyone knows it.'
I like it. The GM thing is just another distraction. Probably the bigger points, as far as that goes, is that he screwed over non-union pensioners (including my wife's uncle), and spoke of wanting to repeat the partial-nationalization of other companies - even though there are no "too-big-to-fail" companies on the brink right now.
This urge to nationalize is an obvious symptom of his socialist bent. It drives me nuts. If it has duck parents, grew up with ducks, hangs out with ducks, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, do you REALLY have to have a note FROM THE DUCK saying, "Hey, stupid, I'm a duck!" before you start to think, "Gee, the feathered fowl over there just MIGHT be a duck!" Seriously!!!

Hey, I'm all for rebutting lies. However, there is a very limited ROI on this type of thing.
Â@
Nobody who saw or heard of the Clinton speech is undecided. At the very most, 30 million might have caught it, out of 160 million who will vote in November. There are no such thing as true undecideds in an election year like this who watch conventions or listen to political media.
Mitt should stick with the daisy cutter strategy and expand the battlefield to as many states as possible. Use the superior resources to drain Obama dry. Make him fight to keep Connecticut. Try some ads in Washington and Oregon. Fuck with him a little.

Govt should just sign all remaining GM stock over to the UAW and wash its hands of this. Yea, we'll take a haircut, but it won't be nearly as bad as hanging on and having a never ending stream of bailouts. Let the UAW own it...then they can strike against themselves if they want to.

.....A single memorable line from Clinton's speech?
"No one...could've repaired the damage"
That's the line that they want us to remember.
But it's a Lie.
Reagan did it.....and without any bailouts.

With all due respect Ace: YOU ARE FULL OF IT!! Keep pedaling your crap! You totally overreacted and gave Clinton way too much credit. You are just like people on the Left Doubling Down of your mistake and then trying to buffer it. You acted totally PANICKED....Keep all your pieces and junk about Clinton...But spare me that what Clinton said was a lie but powerful. NO IT WAS POWERFUL to mindless drones. It was the like Dick Morris said...A southern lawyer defending a guilty man. You fell for it and then took to the Internet and caused so much unnecessary grief. You and Allahpundit should realize that you started the trickle that was way over the TOP....and remember you said YOU WERE MORE EEYORISH than Allah. So you both sounded bad. Allah is a moron anyway and has no business being anywhere except on the left like Daily Kos and Huff Post.
Nevermind Ace that you like Gallup even though their Approval Number is based on Adults and their head to head is Registered Voters....but you ran with your doom and gloom...That was not helpful and was way too quick to react. Bill Clinton is a legend to some but just as many think he is a wet shirt.
You also never talked about the Swing State Poll of Ras...that TODAY after all the BS of yours and Allah's rubbish talk of a bounce...OBAMA is up 46/45....ONE POINT in the Swing States!! After all that weekend polling and masterful speech by Bill Clinton...ONE POINT!! That is not going up...in fact Dick Morris nailed it the other night...Obama would gain 2-4 points but by Friday of this week it will be back to tied and then by next Monday he thinks it will beging to move to Romney. He can be wrong but he knows Clinton alot better then you.
Why in Swing States...because we are getting all the ads! Great ads came out yesterday here in Florida from some of the Super Pacs for Romney and they were excellent right during football. While a national poll may show a modest bounce the Swing States did not. And those states like mine in Florida will determine the winner. With those ads starting to hit Obama yesterday and moving forward I suspect Romney will be back in lead in Swing State by Friday or Monday. I know many of you not in the swing states do not see the ads but we do and that is why OBAMA is at 46 in swing states....nowhere near 49 or 50. Remember those swing states also include Penn and MI where ACCURATE polls like PPP have Obama up by like 9 and 7 points respectively....The 46/45 is Ras but just illustrating a point with PPP and swing states.

"we are NOT to take any R/R info, no George Allen info or any Congressional candidate info. "
People who are confused or frustrated by this need to go back and re-read kelley's post. What RR is doing with this is A GOOD THING.
Go to the door.
Are you voting for RR?
If yes, then proceed to offer yard sign.
If no, move on, and probably make note of address.
You will get yard signs in a lot of places here. Quickly, which is key.
If a resident who said "no" to the question goes out to get their mail the next day, and sees four neighbors on their street that have sprouted RR signs, they might do a little thinkin' on the reasons they gave the door-to-door volunteer the day before. They'll probably get hit again later, by phone or by another door-to-door. But in the meantime, the campaign has done excellent time-management.
That door-to-door volunteer could have probably swapped that one person, after talking to them for 45 minutes. Or they could have blown that 45 minutes and gotten nowhere. Either way, that was 45 minutes spent at one house, and that probably equates to a good dozen RR signs that were easy placements that didn't get done because of that one person.
Pass 1 - get out the easy signs. Take notes.
Pass 2 - if necessary, go back and re-engage the harder sells.

I got into a discussion with someone the other weekend about WHY! OH WHY! does America feel like we need to spend so much money on teh militareez.
This was not a person that would have really responded well to an in-depth explanation of why and how, exactly, we do not want "fair fights" in war. So I offered that explanation, but moved on quickly to educate by illustration.
Reagan spent a lot of money on the military, right? Pretty much agreed to on face value, right there.
So Reagan set up a big spendy military, which Bush I used in Kuwait. And as a result of all that spending, Kuwait was...well...Kuwait. A blow-out.
Perhaps too good of a blow-out. After Bush I, Clinton came along, glommed onto the notion of military overspending, and gutted a lot of military expenditures. Pretty much agreed to there, as well, at face-value.
So Clinton set up a much less spendy military, which Bush II used in Afganistan. And, as a result of that non-spending, A'stan has been...well...A'stan.

"In my state, if you sign a sworn affidavit that you have watched every season of Law and Order, you can hang a shingle."
SWEET!
Wait...does that include all the SVU and Criminal Intent ones, too?
Because, while I probably missed half the SVUs, I can totally do that whole "lean-sideways while I ask a very leading question" thing that Goren would do.
Very effective in interrogation, which means it is probably just as effective during cross-examination.
