Republican National Convention Open Thread 1
— Ace

It's on CSPAN, and also CSPAN online.

It's a crapshoot on the cable stations. They really want to sell Isaac. Even Fox. They've got Sheppy down there to report live on any baby-cannibalism that might take place in the Superdome.

73 Rules have been passed that will decide future primaries in the first couple weeks of the primary season, if not before that, and the next time the GOP thinks they won't be successfully challenged by upstarts like Santorum, Bachmann, Newt, and Cain. They think the conservatives that have been doing the knocking on doors, and turning out the church vote aren't paying any attention. We'll see.

The whole rules thing was to prevent delegates from states that go all for one candidate from changing their vote at the convention. Paultards have talked about infiltrating delegations and doing this very thing.

119 Things you have to believe to be a liberal #234: The difference between Barack Obama (or Cynthia McKinney) and Mia Love (or Allen West) isn't ideas, it's that the latter aren't "authentically black" - because they're not liberals. Thus proving that Republican support for Mia Love and Allen West is, in fact, racist.

337 >>>Kasich has balls. The guy actually took it to the Dems harder than Walker in my opinion.

Yeah, but he also got the mother of all mega-smackdowns at the ballot box and saw all those union reforms undone as a result.  It was a poorly-written bill (didn't exempt police, firefighters, and prison guards the way Walker's did, opening up a massive line of attack) that wasn't sold the right way.

Thankfully Kasich's numbers have recovered a lot since then, and are nearing positive ground.  But it could've been handled so much better, with a lasting victory.

391 Yeah, but he also got the mother of all mega-smackdowns at the ballot box and saw all those union reforms undone as a result. It was a poorly-written bill (didn't exempt police, firefighters, and prison guards the way Walker's did, opening up a massive line of attack) that wasn't sold the right way. _______________ Well part of the problem was timing, and the nature of the unions down in Ohio. I think the Ohio unions are thuggier than the teacher's union that led the fight against Walker. Plus Kasich had to take on dissent and back stabbers in the Ohio GOP.

I know some people really hate the all-caps I sometimes use, but I can't help it.  It just seems to me be a better way to capture the rise-and-fall and emphasis of my speech pattern without having to resort to the ponderous use of the italics tags (which I do occasionally use too).  I guess I don't interpret it in the "whoa this dude is shrieking at the top of his lungs at me" way some do.  I just mean it like a 'stage shout,' more to sell the meaning of the argument than anything else.

We might do one just for Romney, or maybe Romney and Ryan

Meh, you're probably right for tonight, but there definitely needs to be one when Ryan throws down the red meat tomorrow night.  Don't you remember the awesomeness that was the Sarah Palin liveblog from 2008? http://ace.mu.nu/archives/272380.php

Someone suggested that R. Lee Ermy (the D.I. from Full Metal Jacket) will be the mystery guest.

I tend to think it will be too.

680 The speeches have not been slick or professional, but all these folks have been very likeable and sincere.

Ann Romney is the point of the night.

Posted by: Tonawanda at August 28, 2012 05:02 PM (l62NP)

681 They're kind of over-killing the "you didn't build that" meme, imo.  It's the greatest gift in recent presidential politics, but we risk stripping it of its power if we treat it like a slogan instead of like an emblem.

Posted by: Ben Morris at August 28, 2012 05:02 PM (eIfrn)

682 And I have to tell you, the corny bad speakers who are business people strike a cord with me. I started a small business and I am working my butt off while trying to keep the house rurnning and helping grandkids. This is not easy. So I resented the hell out of Obama's statement.

I think this is a good evening.

Scott Walker looks like a man with the confidence of knowing that he's moisturized his balls with the broken dreams of  union fucktards.

See the shine and volume in  his hair?  That's tea  tree oil and OWS tears. Nothing else gives that kind of body.

687 but I'm warning you all right now: he is not a magnetic speaker.

I think the public is starting to catch on to how much good speechifying is worth after Obama's been schooling them for 4 years.

Posted by: Bill Mitchell at August 28, 2012 05:32 PM (hlUJY)

718 Somebody already mentioned this I'm sure, but if you watched CNN the past hour and a half, you didn't get to see the speeches by Gov's of 3 crucial swing states this election: Kasich (Ohio) McDonnell (VA) Walker (WI) Sandoval of (NV) makes 4 times CNN decided to cut away to some guy standing in the fucking rain talking about how bad it was raining. Then if they cut back to the RNC & a successful Repub. Gov. was still speaking, they had their talking heads speaking over him until they cut to a commercial. Yes folks, CNN decided some guy standing in the rain 'updating' people with the same shit they've heard 45 times today about Issac was more important than covering these speeches.

Posted by: drawandstrike at August 28, 2012 05:34 PM (uVLJc)

719 Lucky for us no one watches CNN.

Posted by: Bill Mitchell at August 28, 2012 05:35 PM (hlUJY)

720 Keep in mind that Ronaldo Magnus was no less devoted to all those things important to Santorum, and that will show you who knows what he is doing and who does not.  I believe now that Romney has the sort of political intelligence far closer to Reagan than Santorum.

Posted by: Tonawanda at August 28, 2012 05:35 PM (l62NP)

721

It wasn't Santorum, but I just had to doze off for about 20 minutes.  But, the fact that he did not wake me up speaks volumes.

Posted by: sybilll at August 28, 2012 05:35 PM (I4z27)

722 Now while Ted Cruz is giving his speech, CNN has their political analysts blabbing away while they do crowd shots. They will show nothing of Cruz's speech.
