Republican National Convention Open Thread 2
— Ace

Well, the first hour was... dysriveting.

I've never watched a convention before. Not really. But I'm wondering if they didn't succumb to the media's concern-trolling and take out most of the barbs about Obama. FOR THE VICTIMS OF ISAAC.

Making it kind of boring.

Anyway, Scott Walker's up.

112 "good speech... delivered it in more of the classic stentorian fashion."
One of the sad things we've lost over time is the speaking voice. Only a few people do it like pastors, but most people think they need to be "authentic" and not give a real strong speaking voice with language tailored to making speeches only.
I'm thinking of the territorial assembly scene in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, where Jimmy Stewart is totally outgunned by the rancher's speaker. That guy could speak, but the whole scene is built around Jimmy Stewart as a homey, populist guy who wins the day.
And that's what the culture pushed. Its "inauthentic" to speak differently, its not "ordinary folks" enough. So we lost a pretty rich part of American culture.

I think this is how most conventions are. Stilted speeches et al. It doesn't help that it's a cavernous arena with folks who have been listening to political speeches for months now.

By the way, remember how John Kasich delivered such an energetic speech? According to Dave Weigel on the floor of the convention hall, he improvised nearly the entire thing on the spot because his teleprompter broke down.

He had written text he was glancing at. Pretty smoothly handled. The crowd didn't seem moved, but it might just be the audio. Hard to hear them react on CSPAN.

People will read the transcript in a few days and agree with me.  He was okay.  Nothing great.  He made too many excuses for dems and for Barky voters and tried to actually get the crowd to agree that Clinton came to meet them halfway.  Clinton had to be dragged kicking and screaming and he promised his own constituents that he would undo much of what he signed in his second term - which is part of how he got a second term.  Of course, it was a pathetic joke since Clinton never got anything passed of his making.

And talk about how compromising JFK and LBJ were?  Er ...
