Researchers In Search Of A Problem
— LauraW

This study purports to show that "scared" herbivores carb-load and this causes them to decompose in a less environmentally-helpful way, after they die.

No, not kidding.

Observe the scientific technique:

They placed cages in areas of natural vegetation and allowed some grasshoppers to be alone while others were placed in cages with a spider. They glued the mouths of the spiders shut in order to make sure that the grasshoppers experienced pure fear, but were not actually killed by the predators.
Previous research has shown that grasshoppers, which normally consume nitrogen-rich grass, move to a diet of carbohydrate-rich grass to cope with stress.

This replicates that state of nature where grasshoppers and spiders are in contact with each other for extended periods of time, the grasshopper never gets away, and the spider constantly menaces but never catches its prey. Also; 'previous research?' That leads me to believe these researchers never bothered to replicate those results in this experiment.

But, let's give it to them. Let's say that animals that die after hitting the potato chips, decompose very differently from how they do after a salad. We will agree for the sake of getting along, that the relative paucity of nitrogen in these nervous, pasta-bingeing grasshoppers produces a less beneficial effect on soil flora (if they had a *more* beneficial effect, this data would be very inconvenient).

Naturally, the conclusion to be drawn here is that these processes affect the climate! OK, they don't actually say that, but carbon is so often cited as a catalyst for The Villainous Warmening, that the words 'global carbon balance' and 'climate' are virtually interchangeable in articles devoted to the subject.

They found the grass decomposed between 60 per cent and 200 per cent faster in soil containing stress-free grasshoppers compared to the stressed grasshoppers, a result they say is "huge."
--------snip-----------

"This shows that animals could potentially have huge effects on the global carbon balance because they're changing the way microbes respire organic matter."

It shows no such thing (if this article is accurate about the research)! At most, it shows that soil nitrogen speeds up composting. That's about it. We already knew that. There's nothing here that suggests these researchers have reason to extrapolate that herbivore mood affects the carbon balance of the globe.

I mean...just...damn. Please. Please, people. This nonsense has to stop.

Oh, no, but never mind. The evidence for a phony chain of events is being manufactured, so let's go on and jump ahead a few bricks: stressed animals contribute to Global Climate Change. You heard it here first. And you should all stay out of the woods, lest you startle some chipmunks and magically convert them into pollutants. One can only look forward with delight to what the carbon-obsessed EPA will do with further studies like this.

So they've arranged to imitate things like runways, to put fires along the sides of the runways, to make a wooden hut for a man to sit in, with two wooden pieces on his head like headphones and bars of bamboo sticking out like antennas--he's the controller--and they wait for the airplanes to land. They're doing everything right. The form is perfect. It looks exactly the way it looked before. But it doesn't work. No airplanes land."

Filled with apes

Eat, they crunch.

Their fangs, dance,
Tiny combs.

Glistening with little blue crabs.

oh gregiiie!!!

Armed with bad logic and anecdotes!!!

Tell me gregie since you're an obvious expert; Compared to insects how large is mankind's carbon footprint? I'm looking for a ratio, feel free to express as a decimal for accuracy.

It must be like 10x right? 100x? 1000x?

Insects have tiny feet, duh.

insects are NOT ANIMALS.

Insect is a racist term. We prefer to be called Arthropod-Americans.

All the events in his life that occurred prior to death including birth, oh and contracting liver cancer.

100 This study seems to argue that non-biodegradable waste is superior to easily biodegradable (in their twisted logic), because of the difference in carbon (CO2) production.

Following that logic, then we should all do our best to toss plastic wrappers and styrofoam containers out car windows as often as possible. If we litter the ground with relatively inert trash, then oxidation of dead grasshoppers and such is slowed to a crawl.

We just have the crying Indians to deal with.

101 you can just hear the grasshoppers thinking, "holy shit! those spiders have their mouths glued shut!"

105 Were the spiders experiencing fear in having their mouths glued shut?

106 How does one glue a spider's mouth shut?  I wanna see that.

107 As long as my tax dollars don't fund this "work", I couldn't care less what these dumbasses study.

109 WHY DO YOU HATE SCIENCE!!!!!

Posted by: fb at June 19, 2012 11:11 AM (JVEmw)

110 I wonder how they would have prevented the carb-rich grass from decomposing, if the terrified grasshoppers hadn't been introduced. Or does that not shiv Gaia in the same way?

Posted by: Feynmangroupie at June 19, 2012 11:13 AM (oI744)

111 What's so wrong about this study? It's WELL-ACCEPTED that stress behaviour changed eating patterns in mammals and most especially humans, who have been perhaps MOST studied in regard to ice cream binges after the boyf dumps us, or whatever. Are we supposed to hate this study because it makes ONE statement, in the admitted "potential", about global carbon balance -- a statement that really isn't that controversial at all? Yes, indeed, less nitrogenous organic waste (e.g., carb-loaded grasshopper corpses) is understood to affect microbial respiratory processes. Did you science hostiles think it was JESUS-MAGIC breaking down those bodies? :/ There's some reason to be alarmed, because the timing if these results comes very close to a recently-released study about bird communication in nests subjected to excessive human noise. Taken together, the studies may herald an enviro-science onslaught against human disturbance of natural animal habitats, which would be an o erog ambitious charge indeed, but as the study is presented, it doesn't provide conservative science sceptics any reason for a knee-jerk rejection of anything mentioning "carbon balance". Kind of reminds me of all the Christians who fought against big bang cosmology tooth-and-nail until the realised (read: we're told by their pastors) that t=0 is the best scientific corroboration of Creation currently accepted by mainstream science. It really DOES make us look "anti-science" when our mos important blogs post rejections of perfectly innocuous science pursuant to AGW paranoia. I dig REAL science -- I'm HARDLY a friend of envirosci in most cases and I almost always agree that the pseudoscience profiled on this blog is fucking absurd -- and this just happens to appear to be real science, whether they had to sneak in a single "potential"-qualified statement about carbon balance to have it seriously considered for peer-review publication given the state of professional envirosci in 2012? Indeed, that's probably a better discussion hereÂ…did the authors have to sneak in a climate change tag to get published?

Have a wank and a nap. Then you won't be stressed by our anit-science mindset and find yourself giving in to carbs.
