— Ace If you check other people's reviews, most are scrupulous about saying very little about the plot of the film, as it's a Puzzle movie, and the solution to the puzzle is pretty fun.
If you're worried that ads for the film have already given it all away -- that scene of high-tech troopers stomping about -- no, don't sweat it; the technological aspect is telegraphed from, literally, the opening scene. Pre-title. (In a fun bit of grindhouse aesthetic, the film's title comes up in block red letters as if it's the scariest thing in the world, even though the scene it's appended to is a funny modern office sequence.)
The actual twists are not spoiled by the ads.
Speaking vaguely as possible...
Much of it actually a pretty silly and funny comedy. It's a very meta horror film, about the rules of horror (and why they must be so), even more so than Scream (which told us the rules of horror but not Why They Must Be So). Even if you're not a horror fan, though, you know the basic set up of a horror film well enough to get the jokes and plot-points here.
The laughs here are bigger and better-earned than in most actual comedies.
I would say it's more funny and clever than actually scary. The scares are really just pop-ups and graphic violence, not that feeling of dread and tension you feel in a genuine horror movie.
The characters -- the standard five young people off for a weekend debauch in an isolated Cabin In the Woods -- are actually reasonably likable. And, the film makes a point of noting, intelligent.
That point -- that they're smart -- is not just thrown in gratuitously; much of the film's plot and commentary on horror relies on establishing them not just as smart but actually very smart.
It's novel but not mind-blowingly so. The elements in play here are well-known to most geeks; horror fans, especially of the geekier sort, will recognize all the basics of everything seen here and discussed here. The novelty comes in how they are assembled, and to what effect -- that is at least new. No one's ever used these elements in this way before.
I'm speaking abstractly. I don't want to give anything away. It's a bit like a Doctor Who where the beginning is all about setting up a "What the Hell is going on here?" bizarre-situation cliffhanger, and then, with the characters, discovering more detail, until the solution for The Strangeness is revealed.
It's rare that I can't figure out What The Hell Is Going On Here pretty early in a movie. I didn't figure out this one until pretty late. They did a good job of giving you enough hints that the solution was On The Tip of My Tongue for longer than I actually had it in hand -- it was just sort of outside my grasp, tantalizingly.
The solution is both logical and wildly implausible. There's an old observation that if if you concede to someone a single false premise they can prove anything, with perfect logical form; all silliness can be established, logically, if that one false premise is conceded.
This film's One False Premise is a big, fun one (again, a bit like Doctor Who), and, given a willingness to concede it to the filmmakers (as I was, as they were entertaining me), they can spin a lot of perfectly logical, but perfectly ridiculous, conclusions from it.
I call this type of a movie a Funhouse Movie, where at no point are they genuinely attempting to depict reality; it's all sensation and fun. Done poorly, such a film seems trivial and trite (and often boring as hell, as absent the sense of realism and dramatic investment, who the hell cares?)
But done right, they can be a fun ride. Ever-so-slightly intellectualized so that you might mistake the Funhouse for something Deep (if only for a moment)- just enough pretense of being smart, when really it's just clever.
Definitely worth a trip to the theater, if the ads enticed you at all.
Spoiler Caution! If you've seen the film, please please do not even hint at the solution (a hint would be noting, as I was tempted to do, the various sources the film draws on for inspiration).
That's 90% of the fun. Don't ruin it for anyone. Be very very vague.
Thor: I did not recognize Chris Hemsworth (is that his name?), aka Thor, until about halfway through. He comes off as a college student here (which is what he's supposed to be), and not a Mjolnir-Bearer at all.
But he's the closest thing the movie has to a star, so I should note he's one of the "teenagers."

In my nightmare I awoke to a world with $4/gal gas, high unemployment and a racist socialist radical in the White House.

I read the spoilers and it does seem very clever and I'm glad to hear they pulled it off. I like that they're taking the central Problem with horror (why the fuck did you go hunting for the guy who lopped off the head and left it in the toilet instead of fleeing like normal people) and explained it. I might actually have to go see it.
In random movie news, the huge old Victorian house my current office is in may be used for an upcoming movie. I am ridiculously excited about this and, lamely, more so because I got to geek out about sound design with the location scout than I am about who is in the movie (actual movie stars).

I'm definitely intrigued by this movie. I'm not a big horror fan, but I appreciate Joss Whedon's ability to weave a great story with great characters. He's the main reason I'm toying with seeing The Avengers despite my vow to not go see ANY movies this year except for The Hobbit.
For those who have seen it, would you say Cabin in the Woods is at all akin in tone to Tucker and Dale VS Evil? Because that is a movie I LOVE and ADORE and would MARRY if it was a man. It's another film that takes a horror movie trope -- college kids and hillbillies in the woods -- and turns it on its head. I actually view it as more of a comedy than horror, despite the copious gore that's sprinkled (no pun intended) throughout. So if CitW is like that in some degree, my desire to see it jumps up a notch.

We were discussing movies/tv shows with unhappy endings the other day and got into a heated debate about the ending to Twin Peaks. I am in the camp that it's not an unhappy ending per se but that it shows that sometimes a sacrifice to save one will end up destroying more. Then again, it's not like Lynch was attempting any type of coherent statement.

In horror films, the suspension of disbelief is almost universally required regarding the monster/entity, etc. Zombies - can't happen. Vampires - can't happen. Werewolves - can't happen. Escaping the dream world to terrorize teens - can't happen. Monster that comes out of hibernation once every decade/millennium, etc - can't happen. Ghosts - 99.99% of moviegoers have never claimed to see one. Psycho killers can happen, and I think that's why they've occupied a special place in the genre - because they speak of a monster that does lurk. But psycho killers that cannot die no matter what - well, we all know that can't happen.
What this movie does so successfully is that it requires you to suspend your disbelief in many different areas, but the "monsters" are the least significant of those requirements. They are the "given" in the story that is even suggested by the title of the movie. But it's everything else that takes you for the twisting ride as the layers of the plot onion are peeled, and the monsters are just a required element of the story that the viewer expects. The things you expect to see are there, but only to serve as a backdrop to demonstrate the weirdness and unpredictability of the things you never saw coming.
The more I think about it, the more ingenious I think it is. It's certainly not the best film ever. Maybe not even the best horror film ever. But it definitely was not tired, worn out, stale, or predictable. I had fun with it.
Take all these comments as coming from someone who has always adored the genre.

Now you ron's should check out " The Darkest Hour", a lower budget Aliens attack movie, set in Moscow. No-name actors, but I enjoyed it. As long as expectations are too terribly high, I thought they did a good job with it.. worth a rent..
You know, I didn't like it that much and I don't know why. I think part of it is that the writers were wavering on having Emile Hirsch's character be a douchebag and be a nice guy. Go one way or the other but don't waver on which it is.
I really did like that it was set in Moscow and that some of the characters were not brave. The one girl, in particular, reacted in a real way which is to curl up in more or less catatonic terror. Also the Russian guys on horses were great. I'll have to watch it again, maybe I'll like it more.

I want to say MGM's money troubles were part of what kept The Hobbit in development hell for so long, too.

Hmmm... I've heard I probably wouldn't like it. Maybe I can fast-forward and watch it on mute.

Reducing "The Cabin in the Woods" to a "teen slasher comedy" is like reducing "The Wire" to a "cops and robbers show."

Having never heard of "Woman Thou Art Loosed," I assumed that this was just some kind of intentional Joss Whedon sleight-of-hand, but eventually enough people figured out that something was wrong, and the projectionists finally got the right film started.

One character touch: Fran Kranz's Marty, the stoner, shows up in a ragged old Volvo station wagon, smoking his collapsible bong. He climbs out, talking to the other characters, closes the car door, pushes down the door lock button, and checks the door handle to make sure it's locked. But . . . the window is rolled down -- and he doesn't notice. Classic.

Incidentally, regarding the mention of Hallowen III: Season of the Witch in #243 above, I remember seeing somewhere that John Carpenter (who didn't helm that particular installment) originally envisioned that the Halloween franchise (after the success of the sequel) could morph into a series of independent films with no connection to each other beyond the motif of Halloween itself.
It's an interesting idea - each year, a new (and different) "Halloween" movie, just in time for Halloween, rather than the latest iteration of Michael Myers - a franchise as an anthology rather than a series. Now whether that could ever work or not is a big "if," but if true it does underscore the originality of Carpenter.
Then there's the whole thing about how many of Carpenter's films are arguably neo-Westerns, but that's a whole 'nother subject.....
