— Ace I don't think he's moving any needles.
Overall: If you notice, no one's dropping any Zingers.
This may be because Romney sent word he wanted a Serious and Sober campaign. It may be because the media mau-maued the Republicans about their nonexistent connection to tropical storm (now downgraded) Isaac.
It could be both.
Now, if you're wondering what's missing, I think it's the Zingers. Even when they're kind of dumb (and they usually are), they're an important part of the flow and crowd energy of a convention.
And this one has almost none.
I wouldn't call this a "mistake" so much as a "choice" I don't prefer. You can go this route, and try to project (in my mind) an overly serious image. I suppose you get something from that.
But I think you lose a lot. The crowd just isn't amped up and in a party frame of mind, and I think that's because so much of the convention's fare is Nutritious Vegetables.
You need wine & dessert for a party.
The media will, by the way, characterize it as "dour" (the negative version of sober and serious), but that's no big deal, since if it were entertaining and light they would have called it "raucous and filled with fluff and cheap gags."
So, we're not going to win there, no matter what happens.
Still... any chance Ann Coulter can dash off a series of 20 good barbs for speakers to incorporate into their speeches?

As someone who people say is a good public speaker (and who used to suck at it), I've found that the trick is to do it like a loud, drunken conversation in a bar. No joke: you HAVE to raise your voice higher than the standard conversational tone because you need to fill a room, but you need to maintain a conversational tone, like you're talking to each and every person in that room. Some people can pull off the old-school Cicero/Jesse Jackson-style oratory (seriously now: Jackson is obviously a hypocritical race-trafficking schmuck, but he's easily one of the greatest modern American orators in terms of Classical rhetoric standards of our lifetimes), but that ain't me.

Seeing that McShame lost and gave everything away in the process it would appear that anyone or anything would have been a better option than McShame. ANY.
McShame was an ass. The minute he got beaten back like a rabid dog while he was trying to shove that un-Constitutional shamnesty on us, and became the most hated and despised person in the history of the GOP, he should have pulled out of the primary. It took a real jerk to stay in when he knew that everyone hated his guts - and for good reason. Even his mother said that people would have to hold their noses to vote for her dipshit son. She knew what an ass he was. I blame her for not grounding him after amnesty and possibly saving America.

Here's the truth: Huck is a turd when it comes to his politics. You know this, I know this, there probably isn't a single person commenting on this site who doesn't know this.
BUT.
BUT.
The man is one gifted fucking speaker. He's magnetic, he doesn't make mistakes, he makes his religious schtick unthreatening and appealing. You can absolutely 100% rely on him to go out there under a big spotlight and not embarrass you, the way you can't with, say, Santorum. He'll keep it light, he'll keep it brisk, he'll make jokes, he'll nail the applause lines.
I'm under no illusions about Huckabee, especially after his most recent Akin bullshit. But he is an effective public speaker.

He asks “Mr. Obama where’s the pipeline?”.
And ObamaÂ’s first thoughts turn to fond memories of ManÂ’s Country Bathhouse in Chicago.

Dem strategy is to stop hemorraging independent voters by reminding them how scary and extreme the GOP is. If Ace is right about the vanity of these independents, then they are susceptible to things that make them feel as though they're identifying with one group or another (cf. Dems saying a vote for ROmnye is vote for Akin). Zingers potentially alienate independents. They also consolidate the base. But it seems a better gambit to play to not alienating independents than to firing up the base. If the base isn't fired up enough yet, then that WTF will do it, zingers?

There were some hot girls last night, but tonight I aint seen a one.
Just saw the old bassist from SNL. That guy's conservative--or has he just not had a paying gig in too many years?

Atleast they get good entertainment...
Lady Gaga is going to come out in that meat dress i hear....
And the imams are going to gang-female circumcize her on stage. It polls well in Egypt.

A little Mark Steyn to boot.

Unfortunately, I'm not that optimistic. I've never been sold on Rubio as a truly great speaker, honestly. (Maybe it's that -- god help me but it's true -- weird semi-lisp thing he has going on when he speaks.) And Ryan is compelling, but not Chris Christie or Ann Romney-style whoa-holy-shit-stop-everything-now level great.
Oddly enough, I think Mitt will hit it out of the park. He gets better and better each time out. Dude really is like a evolutionary machine - never stops growing.

I ran into him at Strait Music in Austin back when he had the SNL gig.
He was really interested in everything guitar. Great fellow.

This may be in poor taste, but I was hoping against hope that the special guest was Breitbart doing a revealing a Kaufmanesqe charade . His energy is irreplaceable.
At this point the only impressive special guest would be the Holo-Regan.

See I think dude is Reaganesque at times (yes an overused comparison). I'm more confident in him than anyone else delivering the goods. We shall see.
Mitt and Ryan will at the very least be solid.
There is something to be said for a Fred/Rudy type, two confident old grizzled cocky veterans hitting it out of the park.

Better than Custom Shop 60's? I've got a Mexican Jazz I want to upgrade, but can't make up mind on new pickups.
