RNC Thread Night Two, Thread 1: McCain
— Ace

I don't think he's moving any needles.

Overall: If you notice, no one's dropping any Zingers.

This may be because Romney sent word he wanted a Serious and Sober campaign. It may be because the media mau-maued the Republicans about their nonexistent connection to tropical storm (now downgraded) Isaac.

It could be both.

Now, if you're wondering what's missing, I think it's the Zingers. Even when they're kind of dumb (and they usually are), they're an important part of the flow and crowd energy of a convention.

And this one has almost none.

I wouldn't call this a "mistake" so much as a "choice" I don't prefer. You can go this route, and try to project (in my mind) an overly serious image. I suppose you get something from that.

But I think you lose a lot. The crowd just isn't amped up and in a party frame of mind, and I think that's because so much of the convention's fare is Nutritious Vegetables.

You need wine & dessert for a party.

The media will, by the way, characterize it as "dour" (the negative version of sober and serious), but that's no big deal, since if it were entertaining and light they would have called it "raucous and filled with fluff and cheap gags."

So, we're not going to win there, no matter what happens.

Still... any chance Ann Coulter can dash off a series of 20 good barbs for speakers to incorporate into their speeches?

112 McLame did not defeat Romney soundly...Huckabrat and McLame teamed up beginning in West Virginia....they worked together to divide the vote to guarantee Mitt would not win in 2008.  Then Charlie Crist, who in 2008 said he would stay neutral in the campaign...came out 3 days before the Florida primary and openly endorsed McLame over Romney...that changed the vote in Florida big time because at that time Crist was popular....and in fact, that endorsement allowed McLame to win and from there everyone said McLame should be the candidate and Romney withdraw.... but no McLame would not have won in 2008 if not for Huckabrat and Charlie Crist!  We in Florida remember well what Crist did....and who was crushed in 2010 in the GOP Sen Primary..Charlie Crist.  We remembered what he did in 2008! among other factors.

As someone who people say is a good public speaker (and who used to suck at it), I've found that the trick is to do it like a loud, drunken conversation in a bar.  No joke: you HAVE to raise your voice higher than the standard conversational tone because you need to fill a room, but you need to maintain a conversational tone, like you're talking to each and every person in that room.  Some people can pull off the old-school Cicero/Jesse Jackson-style oratory (seriously now: Jackson is obviously a hypocritical race-trafficking schmuck, but he's easily one of the greatest modern American orators in terms of Classical rhetoric standards of our lifetimes), but that ain't me.

Seeing that McShame lost and gave everything away in the process it would appear that anyone or anything would have been a better option than McShame.  ANY.

McShame was an ass.  The minute he got beaten back like a rabid dog while he was trying to shove that un-Constitutional shamnesty on us, and became the most hated and despised person in the history of the GOP, he should have pulled out of the primary.  It took a real jerk to stay in when he knew that everyone hated his guts - and for good reason.  Even his mother said that people would have to hold their noses to vote for her dipshit son.  She knew what an ass he was.  I blame her for not grounding him after amnesty and possibly saving America.

316 As someone who people say is a good public speaker (and who used to suck at it), I've found that the trick is to do it like a loud, drunken conversation in a bar. Posted by: Jeff B. at August 29, 2012 08:37 PM (/COnL) ----- I did have one shining moment at my brothers wedding, giving a killer toast. 323 Meanwhile the Dems are going to throw a Vagina and Islam a pallooza The actual organizer for the DNC jumah prayer event on Friday, Jabril Hough, has also faced some criticism for his group’s advocacy of Islamic supremacist ideology and extremist views. For example, earlier this week Charlotte TV station WSOC aired an interview with Hough where they covered some controversial topics, including Hough’s claims that American troops are actually the terrorists in Afghanistan: Eyewitness News asked Hough about his views on several topics, including the war on terror. “American troops are actually the insurgents. It’s not the people who live there. The people who live there are defending their country,” Hough said. Hough does not consider himself to be a supremacist, but believes Muslims have not received the credit they deserve. “This is a fact: Muslims have visited America prior to Columbus. It was a Muslim who guided Columbus on his voyage to the new world,” Hough said. He insisted he is not a radical, and said his beliefs are shared by mainstream Muslims. This is the face of American Islam that the DNC would like to portray as “moderates”. And they have the audacity to call others “Islamophobes”.

367 RE: Zingers

Dem strategy is to stop hemorraging independent voters by reminding them how scary and extreme the GOP is.  If Ace is right about the vanity of these independents, then they are susceptible to things that make them feel as though they're identifying with one group or another (cf. Dems saying a vote for ROmnye is vote for Akin).  Zingers potentially alienate independents.  They also consolidate the base. But it seems a better gambit to play to not alienating independents than to firing up the base.  If the base isn't fired up enough yet, then that WTF will do it, zingers?
