Basically, what Mitt said was an overgeneralization.  He applied the core of the Democratic party to the entire 47%, in a mean-spirited way, and inadvertantly included the truly needy.  Obviously he thought he was speaking to a crowd that was not very picky, and that was a mistake.  He should probably make an apology in that sense.

I thought Romney's comments were given in the context of being asked why his campaign wasn't focussing more on the message of tax cuts. He was describing his strategy and path to victory more than anything else. I do think there is an important distinction that Romney could take advantage of with his comments.  I think for the lower half that don't pay taxes or whatever, the real distinction of people who aren't going to vote for him that he was truly referring to are among the urban poor.  They're used to voting Democrat their whole life and getting assistance from the government and while they're not moving out of poverty on behalf of that assistance, it's just sort of just become the way of life for them and I guess they look at it as "Well, things could be worse without this."  (Not agreeing with the sentiment, just noting it).  It's really tough for people in general to shake up their status quo and move away from what they know and rely on.

 

Romney could say something like "I understand that my view of how the free market can help the poor is different than what many of the poor expect from it and that it takes a real leap of faith to try a different course than what's become known and comfortable.  And I hope that I can earn their trust and they'll be willing to let me help them be lifted to a better place in life.  But I also recognize that it's a tough sell and that it's probably not worthwhile to focus my campaign efforts on this."  

 

Something like that would come across as Jack Kemp like and he would appear to be reasonably dismissive of the prospects of winning their votes without being dismissive of them as a whole and even being upbeat and optimistic about their prospects.

This whole thing turns into a net positive if you think about it a little harder, and factor in what it does for "enthusiasms."

 

Before this video came out, you had a group of people  who were in no way going to vote for Romney.  Maybe they might get out there and vote for Obama, maybe they stay home.  That part is ancillary.  If   they wound up with a ballot in their hand in November, they would   not mark it for Romney.

 

Of those people,  did anyone change because of this video coming out?  Probably not.  Of those people, is anyone going to now mark  it down on their calendar, and assume a personal vendetta to get out there and SEE TO IT that they vote for Obama?  Maybe a few.  Maybe. 

 

Now, the other side of the spectrum.  Those that were maybe going to stay home, or maybe go vote, and if they did, they would vote for Romney.  Are we losing any of those people because of this video?  No.  We lost zero of those people.  Will any of them be sure-fire motivated to get out there and vote for Romney in November?
