Romney Drops a "Bless His Heart" On Obama
— Ace

"Bless his heart" being among my favorite obscenities, and one I only realized was an obscenity this past year.

It's the nicest-sounding f-you in the world.

In Iowa, Romney dropped the b**** h** h****.

"President Obama, bless his heart, has tried to substitute government for free people, and it has not worked.”

Now, "bl*ss h*s h**rt" is a Southern coinage, right? And it's a very stealth-condescending put-down, right? Like "He tries so hard. Bl*** h** h****."

So... You know. A week of "racism" claims. "Dog whistles."

Chris Matthews is going to eat his own face over this outrage.

Sarah Palin Deployed It... against Akin.

Then again sometimes a "bl$ss h&s h%^rt" is an actual "bless his heart."

From Lv.1 to Lv.3:

"I mean that in the nicest way possible" = "You're an idiot, but I like you anyhow."

"With all due respect" = "You're a bloody fool, sir, and have no place here."

"Bless his heart" = "You are a laughingstock, thank you for the chuckle."

133 It's a semi-condescending way of noting ineffectual attempts at something by someone you consider to be subordinate to you. For example, a nice southern lady may something like "Mary's son Chester spent all day trying to mow her 5 acre lawn with that weed eater, bless his heart." But in this context (man speaking about a man) it's a thinly-veiled insult to establish superiority (alphaness) over a beta male. This is genius because it gets the lapdog media talking about this instead of that moron Akin. Romney knows this will be seen as "racist" but it's being done to establish a sort of subconscious dominance. It can be played off as earnest condescension.

203 >>>Isn't it he's a good boy/she's a good girl with a possible she's a sweet girl alternative?

If you've got good intentions, not too bright, but accomplish what you can accomplish fairly well, even if it is small, you will be (by elders) called a good boy. If you are accomplished you will just get your most laudable accomplishment.

e.g. Jack he's got a degree and is a good engineer. Vs. Bob he's a good boy.
Jack has accomplishments.
Bob really doesn't have any but takes care of what he needs to take care of.

If sweet is what they are trying to convey they will use "nice"
So saying "Bob is a nice good boy" is saying Bob is sweet, reliable, but otherwise unaccomplished.

The bluer the hair, the more well pressed the clothes, the more genteel the accent, the more rings on the fingers, the more said while sipping tea, the meaner it is. The single bitchiest usage I've ever seen displayed was at a high tea at the Ritz in Buckhead and was said by an immensely regal Grand Dame in head to toe Chanel and was about a 20 something trophy bride who was pretty obviously taking the new rack out for a spin. She looked over, sipped her tea and drawled out "Well, bless her heart, she really should have gone to Dr. Watkins." Do you know how hard it is not to spew tea all over the table at the Ritz?

217 If the JEF does lose in Nov. How long before some pundits and the JEF himself ponder that it was due to racism? My guess says within 24 hours of his loss. Any other bets?

This was already addressed during the 2009 inauguration when the official benediction prayer - the OFFICIAL one - had everyone "pray for the day when ... white will embrace what is right".

218 "Bless your heart" = "Poor dumb sh*t"
At least that is what it means where I grew up.

It really isn't a slur so much as a term of sadness and pity for the person who is just plain too stupid for their own good and the good of others. They just keep making pitiful decisions that end up hurting themselves and/or others.

Examples:
"Bless his heart... he should have known Joe Biden was as smart as a box of hammers before he picked him. I don't know what he was think'n."

"Bless her heart... poor ol' girl still run'n around tell'n everybody she's Cherokee. I sure feel sorry for her family. They ought to pull her aside."

"Did you see Biden talk'n about 'putting people back in chains'?!? Bless his heart, he doesn't even know what state he's in half the time!"

227 There's a post in the other thread that is really bothering me. Was from "reality check" and it had to do with like ability. I think mitt is very like able...and ryan even more like able. I'm worried though that I'm in my own little world thinking this and others find him off putting. When I noticed that the networks won't be adding ann's speech I thought to myself "that's right, cut out mitt's secret weapon". Anyways, I get it, I realize that romney is serious as a heart attack and that the economy and jobs is nothing to take lightly or stop focusing on for even a second. I just hope everyone else is getting that too. Cause the prez is doing interviews where he talks about salsa and goes on the late night circuit making jokes and plays basketball with city kids while talking about student loan burdens. (the article makes the point that he hasn't mentioned the national debt though) I'm glad romney is taking this so seriously but worried that a generation who get all their information on twitter and reddit and pinterest plus 5 minute sound bites if at all and reading headlines and not clicking the article, will get who mitt romney is and why they should vote on him. The president does have a well honed, seasoned youth team....they aren't fooling around.

Yes, but it takes the Jane and John Q. As the resident, deep-fried Southern Boy on this here subject,   I'll weigh in:  every instance that everybody else  in this thread   has  used of this fine colloquillalism is correct.

It's the very best put-down you can come up with. Useful in many social situations, it can be sincere  or biting, depending   upon how it's used and whom it's used against. If it's someone you know, it can be a term of endearment. If it's   someone you don't like, it's the ultimate  "fuck you,"  but in the nicest way possible.

However, when spoken  by a true Southern Belle, in the proper fashion of condescention, it takes on so much more meaning. I see it as BYH = Idiot  in political usage.

Kudos to Romney or Ryan, whoever used it.

Just because YOU don't appreciate or care for subtlety,  or tailoring your message to suit your crowd doesn't mean it  is not effective.

307 Whether or not it's an insult is all in the delivery.  Sometimes it's a genuine expression of sympathy, sometimes it discretely indicates that the subject is an abject moron.  It gets even more insulting if you add in an adjective, i.e., 'Bless his little heart'.  Variations are certainly acceptable -- 'Bless his pointed little head' is never anything but an insult.

Romney's comment was of the insult variety, and good for him.  Love to see a Southern staple go national!

"Obama - The Clip on Tie of Presidents"

O/T - for  Easter, my wife picked up a new little suit for our five-year-old son.  It included a fake-tie.  I didn't look at any of it too closely until the morning-of, when I was helping him get ready.

Envison with me, a pre-tied tie.  The "front"  end looked normal, as did the knot, and the loop around the neck.  The "back" end was split about 3/4 of the way down with a zipper, and the actual zipper mechanism was hidden in the knot, so that as you unzipped it, the two  halves of the zipper fed out to the loop, thus  enlarging it, so you could put it over your head.  Unzip it by the knot, slip it over your head, and then retighten it by zipping it back up.

INGENIOUS.

I honestly had a moment of jealousy, where I wished that all of my manual  ties were like  this.  You would never know it was a fake-tie unless you got a close look at the zipper along the "back" end,  which is always tucked in against the reverse-side of the  front.

I've always used it as a sort-of "thank you" when someone goes out of their way for me or does something nice for me. It can also be used to express sympathy for someone or to acknowledge someone's good intentions in a failure. But when I use it in the way Romney did, it's more along the lines of "what a complete and utter f*cking dumbass."

I don't have time to search for the article but it's got them pretty pissed cause almost all of them could have gone the government worker route but instead decided to go private sector. Most, to keep their job have actually taken a pay cut or two and there haven't been any raises at all. When you go in for your yearly review you are told that you are lucky to have a job, congratulatons, we are keeping your salary the same since you already took two pay cuts to keep this job but, there will be no raise. Some one also apparently uncovered another instance of government workers having a fully expense paid vacation, they called it something else, oh yeah, a conference. so they are pissed about that. And a newly hired low level employee shrieked at their paycheck "I don't make anything as it is, how can they be taking so much tax out".

"Oh, bless his heart!  I hope he gets better soon."

at work (derogatory use)
"I just called the department head a turd."
"Well bless you're heart!"

And the always reliable spousal use:
"Honey, I'm going to have to go to Home Depot to get six more parts to fix the dishwasher."
"Oh, bless your heart, sweetie!"  (teeth gritted during delivery)

373 Oh, no doubt, Ace. That comment is solid gold here in Middle Tennessee (land of Al, bless his heart, remember him?).

I'd say you've got it the definition and meaning of the phrase about right. But there is definitely a tinge of pity stuck away somewhere in there, too, as you would feel for a mentally challenged (retarded) janitor or something - as if you're criticizing the guy, but you'd be willing to go even further if everyone didn't feel just a bit sorry for the guy. :-) This quality of the phrase colors it (RACIST! lol) with just a tinge of "C'mon, he can't help the way he is, his mind doesn't work very well, give him a break ..."

I just love it. I also wonder if Romney has said this before, or if he was clued into it by someone recently - either way, it works in this context.

And one reason I love it is that it's the kind of thing that will make BHO livid. Cleverly couched condescension, that sounds nice but is anything but, from Romney? Obama already hates Romney lol ...

377 I'm in the south and hear this used OFTEN. It's definitely NOT a "f*ck you", though it can be used condescendingly, which is how Romney used it. People also use it when they CARE about the person they're saying it about and they realize that person has the odds stacked against him/her. So, it's not always even used condescendingly. It's ALSO used with love and care. Please don't think Palin used it as an FU, because she didn't. It just means the person is fighting an uphill battle.
