To offset loosing Maine we need to keep the other seats (Brown and Heller being the most vulnerable), and pick up 14 others from state like: FL, VA, WV, PA, OH, MI, WI, MO, NE, ND, NM, MT, NJ, CT, and HI. Probably not going to happen, but if we fight those races tooth and nail, then we can take advantage if the dominoes start falling our way. Wrong.  $10 million from mega-rich donors who are unrestrained by donation limits (because they're giving their dough to the Super-PAC and not to the Romney campaign) is one thing. 

$3.2 million from the small-dollar contributions of thousands upon thousands upon thousands of small donors is another thing entirely.  It's not even about the money (never forget: Mitt's got a metric fuckton, if it ever comes to that) so much as it is about the grassroots enthusiasm it reflects.  Most of the people donating in this moneybomb today ain't maxing out the way my dad I did.  They're chipping in $10, $20, maybe $100.  The fact that they can get to $3.2 MILLION FUCKING DOLLARS on the basis of small-bore donations like that, from people who haven't already maxed out, is significant fucking news.

I eventually stomped over to the counter, checked out, and went to the office to stew.

Like many of  you guys, I've never given money to a politician before, but I threw $10 at Mitt for starters. Not much but it made me feel a little better. Anyone who says that he would be no better than Obama, well, I say let's find out. Because he could certainly be no worse.

The USCCB response was depressing. They still are convinced somehow the HHS mandate will get repealed by SCOTUS or Obama and then all is well.

They are clueless to the fact that the Democrats see this stuff as preventative healthcare measures for the poor, minorities, and immigrants (both legal and illegal). Thankfully at least some of the Bishops have been pointing out that this attachment to the Federal Government is destroying Catholic Social Services in this country, but there are not enough of them at this point.

You see, Senators canÂ’t filibuster a bill passed under “budget reconciliation.” Since Chief Justice John Roberts ruled today that ObamaÂ’s individual mandate is a tax, Republicans, it seems to me, could simply lower the tax for not having health insurance down to $0.00, as a matter of budget reconciliation.

Since itÂ’s a tax and not a mandate, there canÂ’t be any penalty for not having health insurance above and beyond the tax. So, voila! No more mandate!

271 I'll kick in for $50 on pay day.  Also, don't forget to save some for local needs for federal offices.  I know that the past 2 campaigns haven't bothered to send signs, push materials, etc. to Texas (at least our part) because we were 'safe'.  Local county party had to foot the bill plus whatever they could get in the way of donations.  Consider this fall spending $100 or so to buy signs, push cards, door hangers, bumper stickers, wires, or stakes to get visibility up in your area.

278 Tonic, Go to hus website under the healthcare part of issues section. It is very short, but iirc he talks about feds role being to even the markets ( something like that) which I took to mean being able to buy across state lines. In terms of the rest, he says its up to the states. I think Mitt is mire reliable on Obamacare than he is on immigration at this stage of the game. But he is better than Obama on both issues.

Thanks, I read that after my post. 

My understanding about the state-lines issue is that this is a state decision.  There's no federal law that says companies can't cross lines.  It's the states that have different coverage rules, etc.

283 I'm listening to Batchelor and thinking about the day.  Could it be possible that Roberts surprised even the other justices?   Could it be possible that, at the last minute, Kagan or sotomayor persuaded him to do this? 

We'll never know, but maybe scalia had an inkling of this and that's why his comments on the AZ law were so devastating.

284 I don't think it was a surprise to the other justices. Ginsburg was out squawking and her comments make a lot more sense now. "Those who know don't talk, etc...." Conventional wisdom was that the mandate was a goner.

288 Several of my friends today, some libs/dems said they know they won't be staying in the US now.  A lot of them said they might go to Singapore.  Most are BO groupies from the last election.  They've been resisting jobs out of the US.  It's interesting, they got what they wanted and now that they have it, they are thinking they have to leave to survive?   Makes no sense, what am I missing?

293 Let the liberals have their party today, I think the Supreme Court signed their death sentences in November with that ruling.  ObamaCare is now the central issue in the election, and the mandate tax is the central issue of that issue.

Roberts didn't do what I wished he did, but he gave Romney and co a pretty powerful weapon by forcing the libs to accept that it was a tax.  Properly used it should be a tremendous millstone around Obama's neck.

The Romney money bomb is a spontaneous, organic event... Laup Nor's were planned, and were actually a total over a few days if recall (much like a Jerry Lewis telethon was actually an entire years worth of donations)

It raised over $3M as I recall it. Even so, why didn't Romney manage to raise $5M or $10M in a few hours? It seems tepid. I don't see where anyone thinks that Romney has overcome his lack of appeal. Either that, or people just don't believe him when he says he's going to repeal National RomneyCare (a.k.a. ObamaCare). As you know, Mitt has said a lot of stuff over the years. Mitt's main problem is that too many people have noticed this habit. Hence, the relative weakness of the response of the Republican rank-and-file small donors. I'm sure Romney will get plenty of super-PAC money (10:1 - 20:2 over Obama). And his own campaign will probably largely match direct donations. But I don't see the usual rank-and-file support yet for Romney. No enthusiasm, no bumper stickers. To me, this kind of underlines the chronic problems of Romney as a nominee. He isn't exactly popular with Republicans. We can say "He's better than Obama" a million times but that's preaching to the choir. And even our choir isn't too wild on the guy. But it is the indies we have to sell on Mitt. Perhaps I'm wrong and none of this matters and Romney will sail into office, dragging enough Senate Republicans in his wake.
