Romney Up Four In Toss-Up States in Politico Battleground Poll
— Ace

Before getting to that, Obama seems to lead by 2 nationally, or about that much. Rasmussen has it Obama 49-47; Gallup has it Obama 49-45 (but they're still polling registered voters).

Politico's Battleground poll also has Obama up by a couple, nationally.

I don't really care about state-by-state polling or even the block of swing states for a simple reason: the state tallies tend to be highly, highly correlated to the national vote.

That said, given that the media enjoyed freaking us the f*** out by playing up Obama's lead in swing states, a little payback is order, via Breitbart's Mike Flynn.

Each candidate leads in states considered "safe" for their party. In safe GOP states, Romney leads by 8. In safe Democrat states, Obama leads by a massive 22 points. But, in the more numerous and more important "toss up" states, Romney leads by 4, hitting the critical 50% threshold.

In the slightly different category of "battleground" states identified by Politico, Romney leads by 2, 49-47. Romney's lead over Obama is powered primarily by his edge with independents. Romney leads Obama by 4 among the important swing voters. By 11 points, these voters think Romney would do better on the economy than Obama, 51-40.

45 Pollsters and those in the know need to start really trying to quantify the Gary Johnson effect. If the Barone article on Instapundit is correct and Obama is having to shore up Portland Freaking Oregon against defections to Johnson how is the Libertarian ticket also playing in Colorado (marijuana legalization on the ballot), New Mexico, Arizona and California. The Romney campaign may be missing an opportunity to do some real damage to OFA in more ways than just resource expenditures. The Republican Party apparatus in California and New Mexico especially should be pushing an if you're wanting to vote against Obama but can't bring yourself to vote for Romney then vote for Johnson message. It weakens Obama, it weakens the Democrat Party and they are votes Romney wasn't really going to get anyway.

Posted by: Hammer Van Zandt at October 03, 2012 10:09 AM (gkfSV)

46 The important thing to do is ignore polls and double your determination to vote and try to get others to vote Romney as well. It doesn't matter what the polls say. Channel that rage and frustration and fear and astonishment at Obama's actions and his administration's behavior into November. See November from here.
And I still think little post it notes about gas being cheaper before Obama took office and how packaging has been shrinking the last 4 years would be useful the final week.

47 From my post today (link in my nic ya know):

October 3, 2012 Analysis

Polls included:
O+2 - Rasmussen Daily Track
O+3 - CNN/ORG
O+2 - ABC/WaPo
O+4 - Quinipiac
O+7 - NPR
Even - National Journal
O+3 - NBC/WSJ

O+3.00% - Current RCP Average
O+3.31% - Average using the 2008 turnout model
R+1.93% - Average using the 2010 turnout model
R+2.05% - Average using the 2004 turnout model
R+3.35% - Average using the Rasmussen Party ID turnout model

RCP dropped a number of polls yesterday, including the Fox poll and the Zogby poll that I analyzed last night.  I'm not sure why they dropped it, since they just added it yesterday.  New polls included in the average include the National Journal and NPR polls.

Romney's advantage has increased across the board and is reflected in almost a full point of support on average across the 2010, 2004, and Rasmussen Party ID turnout models.  At this point, Romney enjoys a healthy lead in the race, and would win the election handily if it were held today.

Of course, the loathsome behavior of the media toward the Palin family in 2008 didn't induce her to vote for McCain, but vaginas or something. Basically, she's attracted some attention for playing at cruel neutrality in a sea of progressives, but her kid is gay so there's no way she's voting for Romney.

Compared to that, noting that the whole post-racial feelgood vibe of 2008 was, to put it in ugly-but-true fashion, a complete and total lie, seems minor. Perhaps it will nonetheless alienate swing voters, but if swing voters are that easily alienated, and that immune to facts, then maybe it doesnÂ’t matter anyway.

2004 was 37/37/26

2008 was 36/36/28

The difference in the number of Ind in each model accounts for the differing results in each turnout model.

93 As far as the debate, I hope Mitt reveals his incredible caring side with some anecdotal references to all the good he has done for people in the context of what he wants to do for the country. For example, as Gov. he spent time in different occupations to see where they were coming from. This included acting as a garbage man where he said they were "invisible", working in an emergency room and other things. Relate that to his meeting coalminers, farmers, teachers etc. on the campaign trail tailing into how he can help them recover from the worst recovery in history.

When Barky lies or blames, throw in phrases like it is a "time to be honest with the American people", that he understands that "facts can be inconvenient for an incumbent" (citing those facts like gas prices, incomes be down, unemployment, direction the country, world standing), "everybody knows things are worse than they were four years ago" and that the JEF's experiments have "clearly failed".  He can do so without coming across as mean and such comments will leave their mark and likely cause Obumbles to go off script.

Most of all, he needs to be relaxed, confident and display sensitive but firm leadership qualities, which he does have.  That said, I think he will do fine and will open a lot of eyes around the country as to who he really is.

156 Ace: "I don't really care about state-by-state polling or even the block of swing states for a simple reason: the state tallies tend to be highly, highly correlated to the national vote." What nonsense. If a given state, say Ohio, one with a lot of electoral college votes, is polling Obie +12, that +12 isn't mediated in the least by the fact of Romney polling +39 in Mississippi and +26 in Alabama and +58 and rising in a bunch of red states that, taken together, add up to Ohio's ECV. Let's say for some reason pollsters found California was suddenly polling in Obie's favor by 4:1. Does that have any electoral meaning, at all? No, of course not; Cal was always going for Obie, and whether it goes 3:2 or 4:1 has zero relevance to how we elect presidents.

Also, a lot of people turned out to vote D last time around just to be part of a historical moment.  This election will not offer that same experience.

164 Althouse at it again at Instapundit, her rebuttal completely opaque to Glenn ReynoldsÂ’ counterargument as expected. She provides no support for her opinion other than to restate her authoritative opinion that itÂ’s racist to use Obama's own words on video. Fucking cuntmuggle.

165 I just read on Instapundit that Ann Althouse is, in her own words, "genuinely undecided this year." I'm not clicking links to her blog anymore.   Posted by: not the mama at October 03, 2012 02:05 PM (kzCIn)

I went to her blog and regretted it immediately because now she is doing her impression of Peggy Noonan, hereafter to be referred to as "PNoonaning" regarding the Hannity video--blaming it on the Romney campaign and denouncing it as ugly and pushing her towards voting for the Taupe Dope.

Disclaimer:  For the Moron Horde, "PNoonaning" has nothing to do with lunchtime nookie...

I wish I could write as well as one Parker Lyons, a commenter at the ridiculous WSJ op-ed saying a CEO (read Mitt) shouldn't run the country.  Here's your ready-made argument for Mitt over Bambi to present to your liberal friends:

While Romney is a respected businessman, he also successfully managed the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Olympics as its President and CEO in 1999 -2 years after a successful term as Governor of the State of Massachusetts. While he may be an excellent CEO, his recent experience indicates he could be an excellent executive in any setting – from the home office to the oval office.

Meanwhile, Alan S Blinder spends most of his time comparing the job POTUS to that of the job of CEO. The unmistakable inference is that because one of the candidates has been a successful CEO, he is less suited to the oval office. Let’s compare the US under Obama and the Olympics under Romney –each has had 3 years to fix what could be described as a situation that was “out of money/out of time”. Each had multiple constituencies to motivate and direct. Both faced numerous obstacles. Each had more than personal ambition riding on the outcome.

When asked why he wasn’t working in a manner to encourage bi-partisianship, Obama replied, because “we won.” When asked why healthcare reform debates and discussions weren’t being made transparent, Obama’s compatriot Pelosi told us we have pass the bill before we are allowed to know what is in it. When the chips were down, Obama gave some of us food stamps and cell phones, he gave others Solyndra. He gave the drug cartels a way to get guns fast and furious. Romney, well he gave people civic pride and a sense of accomplishment. Which one sounds presidential to you?

167 The bloggers and people I have the least respect for are the ones that hammer Obama constantly and complain about how bad he is at the job, how bad the economy is, how much we need a change... but will vote for him again anyway. That's just pathetic, wretched so as to be beneath my notice.
And if Insty stopped linking Althouse, her traffic would shrink to a tenth its size.

168 Is there any way that we can force these "safe for Obama" states out of the union?  'Cause they are killing the rest of us.

169 Althouse reminds me of that daffy bint for the NYT Maureen Dowd. She probably fantasizes that Barack is going to come over to her house and take her in a sexual manner. Their brains are in their vajayjays, and that is their decision maker.

Hell, she probably has the Barack dildo to pleasure herself in her fantasy.

171 Even if it's a landslide it won't be a 'mandate' EVEN if we win the senate also. It'll just show how angry and out of touch the voters are. White rage, homophobic backlash.

174 If all that video did was get into the JEF's OODA loop and make him lose his cool tonight, it was worth it
==============
Hmm.
I think it has already happened.
If there wasn't a debate tonight, the standard MO for the JEF would be to go on a friendly venue and dismiss and downplay this.
But, he can't.
So, tonight, he is going to reference somehow the video and give Team Romney a soundbite to juxtapose with the video--"Is he lying now or was he lying then?" moment.
But, Romney won't directly do it-- a PAC will.

178 In 2008 there were approximately 14 Obama signs in a neighborhood (area) I frequent, and 1 or 2 McCain signs. This year (4 weeks away) there are ZERO signs for Obama and 2 Romney signs. This a swing-type neighborhood in Southeast Michigan. Zero bumper stickers for Obama. Four for Romney. Not even black people have stickers for Obama. They will vote for him and there might be enough fraud and brain-dead democrats to pull out a win for him but the change since 2008 is DRAMATIC.

179 Businesswoman and philanthropist Susan Crown, a former Obama supporter and a member of one of Chicago’s most influential families, told an audience of over 300 women and men, “In the midst of the Obama administration, I became profoundly disappointed, disillusioned and actually a little angry.”

Democrats, Republicans and self-described independents recently came together to hear how one of President Obama’s own prominent supporters is now using her considerable talent and energy to get Gov. Mitt Romney elected the next President of the United States. They gathered at a modest complimentary luncheon in the ballroom of a hotel in Naperville, Illinois sponsored by the DuPage Business Council. The event was a “Women in Leadership” forum, where Crown gave a brief introduction, then took questions from the audience. Outside the ballroom, four self-employed women from a neighboring suburb sold red-white-blue elephant earrings, US flag pins, GOP/elephant jewelry, and t-shirts with glittery “Romney” lettering.

“I am pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, and don’t think the government belongs in a lot of those issues,” Crown said.

So how could a woman with this sort of background on “social issues”, who gave money to Obama’s 2008 campaign, and who worked with him on the Annenberg Challenge board support Gov. Romney, who is pro-life and pro-traditional marriage?

Crown spent nearly one hour answering questions from the audience to fully explain her conversion.

Her reasons and responses were wide-ranging, thoughtful, brutally honest and humorous.

180 Debating Obama is racist.

181 Crown sees through all the desperation and says Obama’s claim of a GOP “war on women” is contrived.

“It’s a construct,” she says. While the Obama camp would like Americans to believe the GOP has a reproductive “war on women” (see the use of radical activist Sandra Fluke at the Democratic National Convention, where she fabricated the claim that the GOP wants to "control birth control"), Crown sees the “war on women” being an economic one.

“I believe that the war on women is really an economic war. And I would not say it’s being waged by the Romney administration. I think it’s a very convenient catchphrase. When I talk to women their real concern is in putting the pieces together in their lives. The average household since Obama took office has decreased annual income by an average of $4000.”

While Crown is “very much pro choice”, she says “my priorities have been completely rejiggered. They have to be. We’ve got a $16 trillion debt. We don’t know if there’s going to be Medicare there for us. So I think the ‘war on women’ is a construct. I think it’s been effective in that it reaches people who are stuck in sort of the old mold of thinking about what our priorities are.”

She respects the fact that for Romney/Ryan, the economy is the priority.

“Our primary issue is the economy. It’s a double-dip recession and a terrible economy. Companies are afraid to make investments. They are hanging on to cash. They are not quite sure what’s going to drop next. Europe? Greece?

“The middle class issue is front and center of all those. When we have a thriving economy, when people can get loans, when people can get jobs, when people can have the dignity of providing for their family, we have a stronger middle class and a pathway out of poverty."

The businesswoman and Mother of two says she is also troubled by Obama’s aversion to free markets and the “not so benign neglect of the deficit.”

"I do not think Barack Obama has ever taken an accounting class. (laughter and applause from the audience.)

"I believe--like obviously most of you do--that capitalism is an incredibly efficient system. And it works.

182 Dear Lord:  Please send a little e coli in the wrong direction so that Mr. Obama pukes and defecates himself on live TV tonight.   Preferably just as he talks about Obamacare (but not his contempt for the Catholic church).
I'm a good Methodist and will be at choir practice tonight but would love to see the clips when I get home.
Thank you.

185 I live in a pretty liberal neighborhood, and so it gave me great pleasure to see that people who live a block away have put 2 MASSIVE R/R signs in their front yard. (They have a tall wrought iron fence encircling their yard and it looks like the signs are fastened pretty tightly to the fence, so it would take some doing for enraged lefties to climb the fence and remove the signs. And, uh, you can tell by the looks of this particular house that they surely have a pretty good security system installed.) I just laughed when I saw them - those signs will cause massive indigestion among the locals. And they are not the only R/R signs I've seen in lib neighborhoods around here. They're outnumbered by the O signs - but there aren't that many O signs around, not compared to 2008.
