— Ace In CNN's poll, 48% said Obama won, 40% Romney.
But as far as changing votes, 24% said they were more inclined to vote for Obama, 25% for Romney.
On the question of who was qualified to be Commander in Chief: 60% said Romney was.
63% said Obama was.
PPP did a poll. It had Obama winning.
But here's the unkindest cut, from @DKElections (Daily Kos Elections). I've changed the tweet a little to make it more readable.
Weird: Among indies in @PPPPolls, 47% say they're more likely to vote for Romney, 35% less; 32% say they're more likely to vote for Obama, 48% less. But indies thought O won debate 55-40, voting for him 46-36
Not weird. Romney's strategy was correct. He gained some ground. Even though the "independents" skewed strongly to Obama.
Obama's whole campaign -- and his debate strategy -- has been to "win the newscycle" and lob a bunch of small-bore attacks and micro-appeals. He keeps doing that and doing that.
I've been saying this for a while: You can win every newscycle and still lose. Because people don't vote on whatever dumb story you pushed into the newscycle. They're voting the the future, and the country, and their children.
A lot bigger stuff that binders full of Big Bird.
Krauthammer called it an "unequivocal" win for Romney.
Obama had successfully used ads and media allies to paint Romney has a heartless vampire, a soulless robot, a bloodthirsty warmonger.
The story of the debates has been Romney using completely free media to undo all that Narrative, and all that money spent.
I think that Obama was only up because he had gone negative on Romney so hard, as part of the "Kill Romney" strategy they announced 8, 9 months ago.
People do not like the way things are. They do not like the economy and are sick of Obama's excuses.
So Obama poured hundreds of millions of dollars into ads to paint Romney as unnacceptable.
Well, in four debates (including Ryan), the Romney-Ryan team as painted themselves as perfectly acceptable, even appealing.
That means that the election returns to... the economy people don't like, and the endless excuses people are sick to death of hearing.
ABC's Rick Klein... seems to think it's advantage Romney.
In a debate about who should be commander-in-chief, Mitt Romney was just as much in command as the man in the job now....
But Romney also had a strong debate, in pursuing different goals than the president. He sought to come across as reasonable rather than confrontational — a candidate comfortable with the campaign’s trajectory.
“Attacking me is not talking about an agenda,” Romney said at one point.
Perhaps oddly for a challenger, Romney singled out areas of agreement with the president — on Egypt, Syria, the use of drone strikes — and then used disagreements to stitch together an argument that looked forward.
...
But Romney had already shown voters that he belongs on the stage with the president. Coming into the debate, heÂ’d fought himself into a virtual tie with the president on key issue areas, according to the new ABC News/Washington Post poll, with little daylight between the two men on trust in handling terrorism, international affairs, or serving as commander-in-chief.
...
There’s no going back, though, to a point where a single debate could change the trajectory of a campaign. Nothing happened tonight to change the race’s direction — and Romney walks away strong after playing on Obama’s turf, competing for his job.

That's a strategy of a non-strategist. Obama is more comfortable with tactics than strategy. Strategy requires vision, patience, hard work making sure it's executed properly at each step.
Does that sound like something Obama is good at?

Obama usually wins the "American Idol" type contests because he's simply less stiff and more fluid than Romney, but on substance, most of these debates have helped Romney.
My honest opinion was that Romney won this debate going away and Obama made some killer gaffes that will cost him key states (like comparing Navy ships to bayonets)
Had Romney come into this debate thumping his chest on foreign policy, I think Americans would have had deja vu of the NeoCon nightmare that was Dubya.

Tonight, Obama was on offense. You don't have to do that if you're the incumbent and you're winning.
Romney was not great except for a couple of times here and there. He didn't have to be.
Carter tried to scare people about Reagan and having his finger on the button. When they saw them side by side and Reagan saying, "There you go again," tut, tut, that attack started to lose its effectiveness. Recall one big Carter flub was saying how he talked to Amy about nuclear weapons. He was trying to scare mothers about Reagan, but instead it backfired because it sounded so unpresidential.
That's a bit what Obama's "Battleship" comment was like tonight. He wanted to demean Mitt and make him sound uninformed, but instead it made Obama seem unserious. (And probably hurt him in Virginia.)

Now, was he as aggressive as I'd have preferred? No, but that was a politically strategic move to take some edge off. He has my vote already. Since I'm not a Donk, I can't vote twice so any bonus energy spent on me is wasted. What Romney did do was appeal to the "independents" who would argue that a more passive approach forces desirable comity and a bit of isolationism to get out of foreign affairs. They'll not have to decide to go for a "warmonger". To that end Romney is an infinitely better politician than I could ever dream of being.
Romney won. He just laid down the last stepping stone to the presidency. Now it's just up to the GOTV efforts and I'm certain that it's vibrant and energized this year to an extent not seen since Reagan. The MFM and most of the punditry class won't know what hit them. As before, none of them know anyone who'll vote for Romney.

You no doubt thought O won the last debate as well, yet the polls in the days post debate didn't show it. Mitt continues to rise in the polls and RCP has him ahead in the electoral college.
The debates haven't helped O, they've hurt him.

Now, if we can just tug the voters off of the couch, out of the bars, away from hanging onto their phony baloney-under utilized jobs on that voting day, everything will be as it should. Landslide!

Tonight, Romney masterfully generated a fresh and indelible image of an optimistic president leading America into a brighter, safer, more prosperous future.
It's an image that will continue to impress the minds of voters as election day draws near.
The wishy-washy undecideds will begin secretly warming to the idea of voting for Mitt Romney.
The cautiously lukewarm supporters of Romney will become outright vocal supporters.
Solid Romney supporters will give even more money than they thought they would originally allow themselves. (I know I already have.)
Soft-supporters of Obama will continue to lose interest in this election. It just won't seem all that important to them. They'll tell themselves it's a rigged game or that all politicians are crooks or that it doesn't really matter who's in charge - they're all about the same anyway. Whatever it takes to excuse themselves from participating in a pointless activity.
Most of these soft Obama supporters will not likely be convinced to flip and vote for Romney. But subconsciously they'll feel vaguely intimidated by the notion of voting against the obviously stronger performer, Romney.
When you're only nominally supportive in the first place, it becomes difficult to invest effort (a vote) against the obvious winner. What's the point?
Moreover, some soft Obama supporters will even develop an ill at ease feeling that they literally shouldn't vote against Romney. That it would be wrong. Again, on a subconscious level, many soft Obama supporters will suspect that Romney is just plainly more competent than Obama. With the vital issues of economy and national security being of ultimate importance: many soft Obama supporters will not be able to bring themselves to vote against what looks like a clearly better course. More than just feeling a bit stupid, they would feel like they might somehow be damaging something.
Why else do you think Team Obama has virtually given up on winning undecideds and moderates and reverted to solely ginning up the base. - Because that's the only strategy that has a prayer of keeping their soft support from bleeding out and staying home on election day. If that happens, Romney won't just win handily or even just win big.
He'll crush Obama in a Reaganesque Landslide.

Personally,
This topic will always stack for the incumbent president, even if that incumbent is a SCOAMF.....
That said, Obama squandered the opportunity- while he looked presidential (he damn well better, he HAS been for almost 4 years),
He did nothing but take cheap shots. Most inaccurately, and many fraudulent.
He played to his base. He catered to the MSNBC loons. He did nothing to curry favor, inspire, give hope, show promise, NOTHING.
I will readily concede he won tonight on points, but it is worse than last time-then, he actually shored up his base, brought some of the lefties back into the fold- he may well have lost the election tonight.
I hope I'm right, thank god and good riddance if so...

It's not surprising. Romney won this with debate #1. But undecideds like to wait through all debates to see if the guy they want will step on his dick.
Well, Romney didn't. So that's it. No more unplanned political theater. It's just ads and stump speeches. Maybe Allred will reveal that Mitt eats babies or Trump will show us that Obama was an official member of the CPUSA, but the undecideds who were leaning Romney will go hard for him now. They've also been reassured by media who has been doing the one thing that Obama didn't want -- they took Mitt seriously as a candidate.
There is only one more planned event before the election: UE numbers are released on Nov. 5. If they go down without mitigating factors like people dropping out of the labor force, it will be worse for Obama because there will be calls of fraud. If it goes up, it will be the nail in his coffin.
There is really nothing good that can happen for Obama except for an October surprise. The Dems are going to get very weird from here on out.

Romney avoided a trap on that.
The administration strongarmed the CIA into stating that they told the president it was protest for 10 days or so.
Romney avoided the bullshit.
Let the press figure out what this new switcheroo is all about if they have the balls to go after it.
At this point the Liar in chief is spinning so many different stories on it that the best thing to do is avoid it and let the stink stick with him.
It was a very smart move on Romney's part.
Benghazi is played out at this point unless the press finally finds its inner investigative balls....assuming they will ever drop from their Obama loving vaginas.

Again, no won has lost in the last century with likely voter Gallup polling showing them over 50% in October polling..
Ohio polling is wrong and artificially bumps democrats up to 2008 or greater margins to find either ties or Obama 1-5%.
Ohio will not be D+6 or above. Not happening.

He wins simply by being likable, presidential, capable, and not a radical freak. He wins by being a guy people can say "yeah he's okay, I could vote for him."
That's the win for him. The usual rules for debate and all the analysis is irrelevant. He won all three debates the first night by doing that, and didn't blow it by getting snarky or angry later on.
It appears that President Obama has only two modes: campaign speeches and professor. When he's not in those two modes, he's floundering and confused and hesitant and uncertain. They pushed him away from professor mode, knowing that would annoy people to be lectured at (and he wouldn't have time anyway to do his patented 30 minute answer). All he had left was speech maker, so he just tried to recycle his speech lines over and over all three debates.
President Obama isn't being prepared wrong, he's just that limited. He's that incompetent, he's just up against what he can personally achieve. That's all he has, at the end of the day, he's just an empty chair.

I doubt there's going to be more than a handful that will cross over from Republican to Democrat, if any.
The only reason the polls look this close is because they're statistically trash. Only 10% of the people contacted actually respond to polls; they're junk, they are utterly worthless.

One of the things that came up is that they know they're oversampling Democrats but because the data is so limited they have no choice. The Pew data in particular was revealing.
Richer and more educated people refused to answer polls more often. Poorer and less educated people, especially those on public assistance, were more likely to.
Hence: more Democrats, and they're getting so little information they can't weight it properly.
Its all trash, all of it; Rassmussen, PPP, all of them.

That was a fascinating situation, and its worth a study in terms of human psychology. Raised to obey and submit, these guys basically have no category for doubting or disbelieving authorities. They are taught from infancy that authority is absolute and unquestioned and that if they are told something they don't even have the opportunity to consider questioning it's validity.

Exactly. They're nearly perfectly analogous to leftists, which is why so many Democrats actually believe that Obama has this in the bag. They can no more comprehend a weirdo Mormon Rethuglikkkan winning than the Arab world could envision their mighty warriors losing.
I loved the aftermath to Operation Iraqi Freedom Phase I, in which there were endless articles written by shocked Arab intellectuals who couldn't believe they'd been lied to by Saddam.

Sure, if Romney had tore into Obama or gotten angry or sarcastic, it would have destroyed him. I'm not sure its really in his nature to do any of that, but if he had - which many commenters here and elsewhere raged that he should - it would have made the Obama scare ads seem real and pushed voters away.
He was a sort of likeable Clark Kent type and that worked perfectly. I get the impression that's what he's really like, actually.

You have to stop letting the TV tell you what to think. Romney's been masterful all along. He's sidestepped every single trap set for him by the Dems and the mainstream media.
I once read something that stuck with me forever. To make the best basketball player in the world miss a free throw, you don't have to knock him down. All you have to do is gently bump his elbow.
Romney has beaten nearly inconceivable odds. He's up against the entire media establishment, which has thrown off all pretense of objectivity, and he's trying to defeat The First Black President, who's a completely unprincipled bastard and liar who would've been laughed off the political stage four years ago if it weren't for his race.
Romney is corny and a member of a religion that turns off many, and yet he's clearly prevailing. He did it by playing this brilliantly.
The man is a genius. You need to relax. I knew he'd win even before the first debate, because I did my own research on his game plan and I knew that he's a big thinker, a Type A personality, a predator, and a winner.
He's got the Midas Touch, while Obama has it in reverse. Everything Obama touches turns to shit.
So cheer up.

Obama needed to do three things tonight: energize the liberal base, stop bleeding independents, and force Romney into a major gaffe.
He might've succeeded at energizing the base a little, but the reactions of Chris Matthews et. al suggest that maybe he didn't. He failed at preserving independent support, as the PPP poll cited above shows. And Romney wouldn't let himself be goaded into a gaffe; in fact, Obama suffered a few gaffes himself trying.
In terms of campaign objectives, Romney was the clear winner tonight.

Now, the Poll of Polls shows Obama with only a three-point lead. Since the poll doesn't have a margin of error, Romney could actually be leading.

He has to have the same level of understanding of the military that the average sixth grader does to think making snarky comments like that are a way for him to show his superiority. I was truly embarrassed for him. Normally I just hate him but that made me cringe like he had just soiled himself on stage.
And it was illogical and non-responsive snark to boot. It is like someone saying that we are short on bowls and Obama berating them by telling them that we have these new things called plates so we don't need bowls anymore. Plates are wonderful things but they aren't much damn help when your mission calls for soup. Aircraft carriers are fine until you need to move a division and all of its gear etc...
And aircraft carriers and submarines are hardly the new innovations he made them out to be.
Obama really is a stupid fucker... there is just no getting around that fact. Ignorance can be treated but stupidity is incurable.

To me, that's the biggest weakness of Romney's campaign. I understand why he's doing it, but it makes him seem directionless and it doesn't show very much leadership. He's too vague, too without specifics, and too general rather than having a bold, strong direction and agenda. It means he'll have no real mandate as such when he wins; he'll just be the guy we wanted instead of Obama.

The only reason President Obama is avoiding that is because it focuses attention on how rotten things are now after 4 years in office.

He clearly has stated that they are going to reform Medicare and SS. Those two are the biggest ones of our problems right now. He also stated getting rid of redundant programs should be a priority. Reform the tax code. Sounds pretty specific to me (For a president).
They can't write the laws, so why give so much detail which could be used against you later as a broken promise.
The only thing he can do specifically is what concerns foreign policy and executive order stuff.

@533 I don't think Obama has a chance of losing Ohio. Like I've said many times, he's leading every single poll. And D+8 is absolutely fair. That was the sample in '08, and Obama has put tons of resources into the state this year. Along with the fact that polling itself today slants Republican because it requires landlines.

OK, I just watched it again (without distractions this time).
Romney was very steady, professional, and presidential the entire time. Obama sputtered at times, and had only three things to say:
1) Everything is much better in the world, thanks to me (when everybody knows that everything isn't great.
2) Romney keeps lying (when evrybody is probably starting to figure out who the real liar is).
3) I was left with a big mess, and if you re-elect a Republican again, that's going back to the same policies that"got us into this mess in the first place" (which is just his "blaming Bush" redux).
Obama even got insulting at one point, trying to accuse Romney of living in the past (i.e., the Cold War).
But another thing I remember is when he spoke of a girl he spoke to at ground zero. Did you guys notice how completely devoid of empathy and compassion he had for her? He was happy to use his few moments with her to try to score a few political points, but was not moved by her story in the slightest - it's just another reason to pat himself on the back. (It's the NPD - people with it lack empathy).
Yeah, get used to saying "President Romney".

Good work, Optimizer.
So many new and vibrant aspect of a debate are drawn out when seen a second time.
Some will argue that such observations are all but useless because most debate-watchers only watch once and won't notice the critical nuances you've detected.
But this is wrongheaded for a very important reason: There is no such thing as the "average" single debate-watcher. Rather, there are millions upon millions of average debate watchers. So the critical nuances you detect by observing the debate a second time are always detected by some significant percentage of those layers of millions of watchers.
In other words: Romney's generally superior performance generally registers as preferable over Obama's generally inferior performance.
And we don't need polls to confirm this. (Though they tend to.)
By watching the debate a second time, often we can determine who was clearly the better. Like you, I make a point to watch all debates a second time.
Clear and obvious Leader and all around Winner: Romney.

"587 And Akin in Missouri. He's going to win, despite the hysteria a few weeks ago here and around America. But I still don't think it will add up enough for the Republicans to actually get a majority in the Senate...."
That's encouraging about MO, but I think you're miscalculating the odds of a Republican majority. Suppose we lose MA and ME, for the moment, but we will also pick up NE and ND. That's 47.
But, there's also roughly a 50/50 chance of wins in 6 other races: OH, VA, WI, MT, MA, and FL. Odds are, we get about 1/2 of those, which brings us to 50. There's also a less-than-even chance for CT, MI, and (I'd say) MO.
The odds of <50 are about 25%, the odds of 50 are about 25%, and the odds of >50% are about 50%. But if we're getting MO, as you say, the odds of getting at least 50 are great!

Romney = New York Giants
One guy wins head to head, but the other guy wins the thing that matters the most

according to that analogy, that means one guy is very prone to fumbling the nuclear football.

I watched it on ABC, and in the split screen, Romney's camera was shaking while Obama was talking, usually around the time Obama was wrapping up his statement. It was like they were trying to make Romney look nervous or agitated. Very subtle. And Romney appeared to be smaller in the split screen too, like the camera was not focused quite as close to him as Obama.
Obama kept making annoying interjections, and saynig, "Bob...Bob.......Bob". When he wasn't doing that, he would stare at Schieffer as if that was Schieffer's cue to let him interrupt Romney. Petulant.
Romney brilliantly deflected the hypothetical "Israel calls to say they're bombing Iran", although it was such an obvious "Gotcha" setup that any good politician could sidestep that freight train.

He's gonna put on fifty pounds, grow a mini 'fro like he had in high school, and choom around Hawaii on a golf cart with Bobby Titcomb.

Rombley had a larger strategy while TFG was small.
I also think that if Rombley made the present-ident look to small, it could embolden more attacks where we have disarmed marines and seals.
Rombley did it for the troops.

On the question of who was qualified to be Commander in Chief: 60% said Romney was.
63% said Obama was.
Math moves #foward.
