Romney/Ryan Gain Strength In Three Swing States
— Ace

One I already mentioned -- Wisconsin. The other two are Florida and Pennsylvania.

In Florida...

Also, according to the poll 48 percent say they fear Obama's health care law more than Ryan's Medicare proposal, while 41 percent say the opposite.

In Pennsylvania, it's 44-38 Obama, but when you add in leaners, it's 47-42 Obama. The Atlantic calls that a "caveat," whereas I'd call it an intensification (of the notion that Romney/Ryan are competitive there).

It's too early to do that "give 3/4ths of all undecided voters to the challenger," still (that rule applies in the last two weeks of the campaign). But... even with leaners, only 47% would vote for the incumbent.

Allah has good post on the Whiteboard Advantage. This gets at an idea I pitched a while ago -- Romney should record 3 one hour seminars on basic economics and policy. The point isn't so much that people watch them, so much as they hear Romney is competent enough, and willing to discuss the issues enough, to record 3 hours of economics lessons.

The whiteboard is better. Same idea though: Look. I'm good with these abstract concepts and want to explain them to you. Virginia Postrel is reminded of Ross Perot's televised seminars on the debt. It's not just that people agree with you when they hear your argument. It's that they also appreciate being treated like a grownup and having some arcane points spelled out for them.

I don't want to steal Allah's post but he's on this wavelength:

Pulling out the white board does two things for him. One: It engages voters on policy on a level that rhetoric canÂ’t. ItÂ’s essentially a visual cue for seriousness. If RomneyÂ’s committed to winning the Medicare debate, he needs to convince voters that the war of words with Obama isnÂ’t election fingerpointing as usual but a real argument over hugely consequential policy differences. The better he is at conveying that, the more the public will resist liberal Mediscaring, I think. Two: It builds on the new identity RomneyÂ’s forged for himself as a policy wonk by picking Ryan as VP. I flagged that in my very first post after Ryan was announced: It felt like, until last week, MittÂ’s campaign had been about nothing in particular except how bad ObamaÂ’s been on the economy. Now, suddenly, heÂ’s an entitlement reformer par excellence, bold enough that heÂ’s actually willing to bust out a de facto blackboard for his cause.

Karl Rove agrees that the Democrats really should have read ObamaCare before passing it to find out what's in it. They are vulnerable on Medicare. And if you don't believe him, Jay Cost agrees.

My previous thought had been campaigns wouldn't matter much; that the trajectory of the election was already determined by the economy, and that Romney was ergo destined to win. Sure, people still have to cast their votes, I reasoned, but we know, for a fact, the great bulk of the factors that will shape their decision. And those factors do not presage well for Obama.

Beginning last Friday, I began to lose my confidence; after all, one can only stand on a prediction for so long without seeing supporting evidence (such as poll movement). Kind of hard to just keep repeating a theory while not seeing any evidence for it.

But now I'm feeling confident again, and revising my thought that "the campaign won't matter much:" This campaign could matter, and turn a 52-47 loss for Obama into a 56-43 landslide for Romney. (I know, the numbers didn't change much; but the little difference matters.)

But that's getting ahead of ourselves. We'll have to see how it plays, but right now I think the Democrats are panicking once again. Previously, they panicked; but they always knew they had the MediScare card in up their sleeve, ready to be played.

And it turns out they had it trumped and played back on them. So now what? That was their backstopper, that was their Plan A (and also their Plan B, and Plan C).

If that's out, what do they have? Run on gay marriage?

You know who's not panicking? Chris Matthews. You know why? Because he's stupid and doesn't follow the news very much.

This might be a tea leaf too far, but you know when you've got the wind in your sails? When you're loose and joking around. When you have them on the defensive, ridiculing them.

That's just a feeling. Our optimism could be ill-founded. And yet, there's a reason for it. It didn't just come out of nowhere.

And forgive the use of this word, but when even the Washington Post is calling Joe Biden fundamentally unserious, he's becoming -- become? -- Palinized. He's a liability, and Obama's got a shit-ton of liabilities on his hands already.

I do not believe he will be on the ticket.

Combine that with silly-shit desperation moves like this -- the White House criticizing the Ryan plan for not balancing the budget fast enough for their liking-- and it sure seems that one side is making first downs and the other side is coming apart.

Cascade? What I was getting at in my prediction was the idea of the preference cascade. I've been predicting it for, oh, two and a half years now. I'm still waiting. Hence, my waning confidence.

And just as I was publishing I checked my email. JackStraw sends this as evidence of the tipping point tipping over.

Radford bakery that turned Biden away sells out of 'freedom cookies'

The viral reaction to Chris the Baker shows the continuing resonance of "You didn't build that" in the presidential campaign.

Another such sign, a direction arrow if you will, is here.

Speaking of that, I was talking to a friend. He wanted to know my take. I basically told him most of the stuff you just read (except this was before my confidence was restored).

I mentioned that what I always want to hear about is how this is playing in the real world, not with partisans, but you know, average joes who don't follow this stuff.

He sent this -- check out comment 2.

Even Crabby Brokedown Dave Letterman: Even he thinks Biden is the new Palin.

Letterman: TheyÂ’re saying Paul Ryan could be a big boost for the Republican ticket. Hey, Joe Biden is a big boost for the Republican ticket.

15 I just got done browsing Newsbusters and Mediate, there are at least 4 clips of the media going after Romney/Ryan for being unspecific on how they'll fix Medicare or the budget. The Tamron Hall clip is especially good with her shaking her head at the clip with the Romney whiteboard on how lacking of substance it is. I doubt many people are big on Romney as president, they're big on Obama NOT being president. And the better Romney makes himself look, the more they move into his column instead of the nObama column.

35 I'm mildly optimistic, because in contrast  to what the concern trolls have been saying, I'm actually experiencing a lot of interest in the election from people who normally pay a low or no amount of attention to politics.

A couple examples; my cousin, who would be considered a low information conservative, is completely for Romney and just from what little attention he's been paying he can't wait for November to get here.  His girlfriend is pretty much apolitical, pays almost no attention to politics at all.  She saw something about Obama's "you didn't build this" speech when flipping channels and looked it up on the internet and was incensed.  They both don't understand the hating on the successful.  There are other people I've talked to who've expressed similar opinions as well.

Then again, I live in Georgia so it probably wouldn't matter if the people I know who don't usually care about politics still didn't.  I'm hoping though this is representative of people around the country.

We are just one week into the Ryan pick. We have no idea how it is going to play out in the long term just like we had no idea how Paln would turn out a week after she was picked. The theory on our side is that it will actually put Obama on the defensive. I'm not so sure. I'm thinking that during and after the Dem convention they are really going to hit us hard on entitlements and the spoon-fed undecideds are either going to back the Dems on instinct (because they are historically the handout party) or listen to bogus "fact checkers" who will declare Obama is right.

This is the problem. The game is already rigged against us, we have to run and expert campaign just to stay even. And I'm not confident Romney is doing that when he constantly plays into the other side's hands. Do you think Obama would rather be talking about the economy, or Medicare?

I remain just a tiny bit lukewarm to Romney as POTUS, because I would've preferred a much more Conservative candidate.  HOWEVER, with that said, I am 100% behind him now.  He got my money, will get more, and will get my vote.  I really like the Ryan pick.  It gives us a great candidate for 2020.  I remember the 12 years of Reagan/Bush with great fondness.  I think 16 years of Romney/Ryan might just turn this completely around.  I am especially encouraged that the two of them seem able to go right over the press the way Reagan did.

"break it down, Barney-style" for the public, so people understand where they want to take the country and how they are planning on getting the economy and unemployment under control, and reducing the deficit.

90 Ace, I stored away a few comment you made during the primary debates. You noted a few times that Romney was very quick on the trigger in pointing out that Obama in fact took from Medicare. Now, in a primary, I guess you can read bringing that up 2 very different ways. Once he made the Ryan announcement, there was no doubt in my mind we were going to shove this in their face hard. The ad they wrote was exactly what I was expecting to see. Had you not noted it months ago, it may have flown over my head. I guess I just get the sense you're a little surprised they took this route, and that surprises me. Maybe you're just more impressed than surprised?

93 I blame Brit Hume for most of this asinine Romney/Ryan being unspecific bullshit. That interview he ran was pathetic, he was asking question that were impossible to answer and then pretended Ryan was dodging them.
Hume: How many years will it take to balance the budget under your plan?
Ryan: What?
Ryan should have said "How the fuck do I know? Tell you what Brit you tell me what the specific economic growth rate is, the tax revenue as a percentage of GDP, the exact cost of the military rebuild up will be, the exact cost of neutering Iran and when we have to do it,  the exact rate healthcare costs will rise, the exact amount the courts will allow the government to reorganize benefit packages and about a thousand other things for the next ten years and I can give you a ballpark estimate plus or minus five years when we can balance it you stupid fuck."

They are already behind Obama....White Voters?  Not...Obama is ON TOP of the ticket and White Voters want JOBS....what can Hillary do about that?  This idea that she would help him to me is folly.  She is too smart to want to be straddled with his liabilities.  She can run in 2016 fresh. As well, Hillary looks terrible right now...she is tired and looks old.  Compare her to Paul Ryan and you have McLame/Obama...Sorry Ace no Biden will stay put.  As well, Obama will not admit that mistake and once he does it shows his policies are not working and he is losing.  It would undermine him.  Lastly, Obama hates the Clintons and likewise the Clintons hate Obama.  Some people will say oh it would be for politics but there is no way Bill would want Hillary assuming Obama's horrible policies.  If he wanted to drop Biden it would have been back in May.  Biden is going nowhere!

I said that one or two nights ago. Point well taken, though. Many Libs think the 1972/1984/2004 election didn't give Nixon/Reagan/Bush a mandate, although I recall Clinton's 1992 43% (and the slight losses in the House and Senate) giving him a mandate.

Remember, as JaneCat said on the DemocraticUnderground a few years back (wish I could find a link, a few of you may remember this), "we"are smarter than 90% percent of the voters. Repub victories don't count. Ever.

143 "Do you think Obama would rather be talking about the economy, or Medicare?"

Doesn't much matter, idiot.

Medicare is being gutted by Oblammocare, which is looming if not just starting to affect the economy and when/if fully implemented will be the largest drag on the American economy since, well, ever. It all ties together.

I realize that's a bit of a difficult concept for you, that is looking at things in a more interconnected big picture way, but pretend you're on the right side of the bell curve and not nestled down at the bottom of the left, okay schnookums?

Further, the reason team shitstick (that'd be dogmuncher's bunch) is focusing on medicare is because they think they have an advantage- if you actually took the time to comprehend what Ace wrote, you'd realize that.

Stankbreath the mincer figured he could knock Ryan out right at the opening bell with his medicare lies. RMoney was waiting with something ohblahblah is completely unfamiliar with- that is to say, the truth- and Romney put it back on him.

Again, Ace said this- seriously sport, you need to stop huffing the paint thinner if you're going to comment here.

Whether RMoney blew up earflaps on medicare now or a month from now, it was going to happen.

The economy isn't going anywhere besides down, thanks to team shitstick- and besides, do you think the undecideds are really looking at this krep before Labor Day? This in mind, talking about how princess sandtraps is destroying the most amazing economy in the history of mankind can wait.

Why beat earflaps over his lumpen skull with his abjectly failing economic dimwittery when nobody is looking?

Hey now.

Posted by: mama winger in Paul Ryan's district at August 16, 2012 04:54 PM (P6QsQ)

153 Hilary will not get the VP slot.  You can bet the Obama handlers, the Jarretts and the Axelholes, would bet their last dollar that if you put Hilary in the #2 chair then suddenly all kinds of impeachable stuff starts leaking to Issa and others, and to the various Clinton-friendly media.   There'd be Team Clinton Deep Throats popping up all over the administration, and Obama would be gone in a year.

Then the Clintons get to roll in to the 2014 midterms as the saviors of the Democrat Party.

And there's no one else Obama's handlers could tolerate who brings a constituency capable of saving Obama, and even if there were there's probably no one who sees it as anything but boarding a sinking ship, a ride on the USS Barack H Obama straight down into the Marianas Trench.

The undecided independents are not going to side with us on an entitlement question when push comes to shove. The emotional feeling that has been built up within them year after year by the media is that Republicans want to gut SS and Medicare.

Make no mistake about this: not every Americans' ancestors left home because they *wanted* to. That said, those of us whose ancestors were brought here by force should understand the will of God. My African ancestors were brought here under duress, but I believe that the real reason was to rescue the former Africans and their progeny from idolatry and Islam. I believe that our forcible migration was a blessing from Him.

Let's just hope that enough of us Americans recognize how greatly we have been blessed by what happened with or to our ancestors, and that we will be able to act to save our sanctuary.

No buts on that sentence, you just are. People making decisions in their lives and in politics *now* because of what happened to a third party at the hands of a fourth part 3 to 30 generations ago is a recipe for hatred and bloodshed. Maybe not for the people struggling with the pain, but for the children they raise informed by that pain. That's one of the horrible things we see in Islam, not the first generation but the second, the young people born in relative wealth and security in the West radicalizing because they grew up with that pain on their shoulders (it doesn't matter to the child how much of that pain is real or invented). We human beings pick up far, far too much baggage *after* we're born, we are staggering around under the weight of past generations like our backs are about to break. We need to *know* history, we need to be informed by it, better than we are. We need to carry forward its wisdom as much as we can and not hang on so desperately to the pain it offers us. Never forget... but live now.

225 today heard sununu say he's willing to bet on romney winning. And then I heard pat buchannan say that it's going to be very close, that perhaps BO will win. So now I'm really really confused.

226 Are our trolls unionized?  If so, somebody put in a call to the local and see if we can get some interesting ones moved to this jobsite.  The current crop is sad...maybe we can get some bona fide Axelturfers up in here that might be worth acknowledging.

Posted by: Thorvald at August 16, 2012 09:11 PM (1V6Pv) Just reminding you that there is a fourth category of immigrants from back in the day that the children of late 19th-century immigrants and of 20th-century immigrants often ignore the plight of: a category of immigrants who were forcibly trained to forget any and all vestiges of their last names, tribes and religions. If you want to go there, lets go there. If you want to forgettaboutit, I'm with that too.

229 221 SDC,

We'll do it.  The main key is to eliminate the white marxist not the average African-American anyway.  I guess we'd be stuck with women, but I am feeling pretty good about our chances to overturn AA again.

If AA is on shaky legal ground for school use, it is on shaky ground overall.

Time to find out if "equal is equal" is our our goal or "some are equal plus"....

morality says "equal is equal" the best person for a job should get the job.

Still going on in Africa and the Middle East, too.

232 226 Mero,

I'll put the founders up against Gnome Chomsky any day of the week with the sensible modifications we've made over time.

I get what you're saying, but we either have a foundation or we don't.

Too much of what is blocking our freedom comes from courts who have NO deference for precedent or the foundation of this land.

Those natural resources EPA and Choom love keeping us from using by fiat....

Those are OURS not the sierra club's or their minions....

we've lost serious track of what the proper role of government is, and we need to get back to self-reliance and freedom.

Posted by: sven10077 at August 16, 2012 05:35 PM (LRFds)

233 238 CT,

and the same type of idiocy is part and parcel to the stupid fevered dreams of the marxists in our nation....

It is a sin we allow slavery, it is a sin we allow thugs to use food as a weapon as a tool to genocide, it is a sin we allow the dreams of a small minority to hamper an economy that gives us all access to our dreams.

There's a lot of work to be done, and if we work together we can rebuild a mighty and free castle.

I love ya, man, but I was talking about people using past horrors to justify present anger. I don't know where the blue blazes you got Chumpsky out of that. Funny, I live in a blue city of Virginia, and I am seeing more Romney stickers than SCOAMF ones.

Posted by: MrCaniac at August 16, 2012 05:48 PM (1grxW)

238 243 Ed Schultz,

I was saying we hear too often as a rebuttal to what you describe by Chomskyites we owe it to today to forget about our past.  The difference between Baldi, Moonbat I was discussing, and Jihadi Jim is the proper use of the past and past angers to steel yourself in a healthy way for adversity today.  Sorry I was thinking about wise Latina, and a few other things.

It feels like we are being asked to forget about our past, but there isa lot of nobility there as well as deserved shame.

Again sorry I was not more clear....reading six threads at once trying to keep the Tepid Air masses whipped and moving towards confidence interferes sometimes with my clarity.

Add in my bad toothache sans medical Ny Quil to dull the pain....and likely knock 100 of my 105 IQ points off and well...

*blush*

239 @242 I guess you are being sarcastic. I lived in Athens for 17 years and just left 5 months ago. Besides Savannah and parts of Atlanta no place in Georgia is more moon-bat crazy left than Athens.

240 Posted by: sven10077 at August 16, 2012 09:51 PM (LRFds) So, when I said "don't forget the past," that came across as "forget the past." Don't worry, man, shit happens to me every day. I can still shake my head, so I'm okay.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at August 16, 2012 05:57 PM (bxiXv)

241 What's even more amazing is that there may be a preference cascade hitting the MSM--some of them want to be first on the call that SCOAMF is in trouble, so they can lord it over their peers when Romney and Ryan win.

242 Merovign, I've been watchin' you! Heh. Your wife may kill me.

Sven, about history:  just today I was thinking about memory and how the most crazy people I know have no real memory or have a perverted memory.  Conversely, the most vengeful people I know take memory too hard and will not put it in perspective.  This is one area where moderation is the key.

Survey on one of the Fox shows: Do you think Corzine should go to prison?  99to1  Yes. Well, that settles that.

244 You asked for the average basically unengaged persons perspective, well I had that happen yesterday when talking to my 68 year mother. She has never voted and was of the opinion her vote didn't matter. That was until she asked me yesterday about Ryan and whats the real deal about his plans. I spent 2 hours with her on Youtube watching clips of Ryan and when I was done she turned to me and said "I registered when I got my license so what do I need to do to vote this time?" There you go a person that never thought it worthwhile to vote before and after watching Ryan explain how things really work she is fired up to vote for him... and that other guy.

Never let an opportunity to bad-mouth Palin go to waste, eh?  I'm surprised you didn't stir Christine McDonnell into the troll's brew as well.

Palin's got issues (she supported Borin' Orrin), but she's no joke to conservatives.  Comparing her to Biden is a nutless caricature.

I've been saying that Romney will take PA if tbe voter ID law is upheld. So far so good!

Posted by: Damn Sockpuppet at August 16, 2012 08:48 PM (yJYwC)

Funny how the left interpreted "Now Romney can/will win" re: voter ID to mean vote suppression.  I took it as no dead people/felons/out of district/etc. being able to vote, so no fraud margin to be overcome!

I am up to my neck with disgust at this working together crap. That always translates to Republicans give the Dims everything they want while the Dims say hateful things about them and give not one inch on anything.

Posted by: Will Be Taking Applications and Assimilating The Love-slaves at August 16, 2012 08:52 PM (kXoT0)

Oh, but it's worse than that - R's go along with the D's {or moderate some out there D proposal} then the D's beat them over the head for compromising, while D's *never* get hit. It's always "They lied to us {Iraq} no way would we have voted yes otherwise" with the bad intent *always* coming from the R's.

I say pull an O! Let's vote in R's, top to bottom, then freeze out the D's, lest they attempt to sandbag, and let the R's prove their ideas to the voters!

If they do that, goodbye lefties, welcome back blue dogs!
