Romney's Foreign Policy Speech
— Ace

Key quotes: I know the president hopes for peace, and I do too, but "hope is not a strategy."

On Afghanistan: "I will affirm that my duty is not to my political prospects, but to the security of the nation."

Overall, he did not announce any surprise new commitment or policy. He instead asserted what could be called classic Reaganite principles -- moral clarity in our thinking, verbal clarity in our words. Military clarity in our resolve, should it come to that.

The thrust was that Obama's policy was ambiguous; our allies are undermined, our enemies emboldened.

He stressed free trade. Although he did not directly state this, he implicitly argued that free trade acts as a sort of evangelist for other freedoms, for openness, for prosperity, for friendship.

He reaffirmed that he planned a withdrawal from Afghanistan, but implicitly caveated this by noting he did not believe in "pre-announced timetables" and that he would be guided by "facts on the ground" as well as the advice of his military advisers.

I had hoped for something stronger than this. Like-- we either fight to win or we withdraw on a much faster pace (that is, as soon as militarily possible). My sense is that we have soldiers dying over nothing except politics at the moment.

He repeatedly attacked Obama on his defense cuts, and argued that weakness would inevitably lead to war, as it usually does.

I think it was a strong speech, within the usual contours of a Reaganite/Republican foreign policy. The man gives a good speech. At least to my ear, he speaks in a near-optimum number of words per minute -- he speaks sort of quickly, thus keeping it punchy, but slows down within that quick-delivery framework to add a bit of subtle emphasis.

Much of his language is admirably old-fashioned in the best of ways -- the vocabulary is not much different from what you'd find in a Churchill address. There's a reassuring quality in that; the mind naturally associates timeless words with stability and solemnity.

A good speech, certainly presidential, well-written and very well delivered. It did not contain any bold pronouncement, but reflected the basics of the standard Reagan foreign policy, as modified post-9/11.

More: Subtle but important distinction from Obama on preventing Iran from having nuclear weapons (Obama) or preventing them from even having nuclear wapon capability (Romney).

Full prepared remarks here. He never seemed to go off-script, but it's possible he changed a few things before speaking.

Yeah, it sucks.  The problem is that we've been reared, as a society, to try not to believe bad things about people.  So when you tell people that some whole society is made up of howling barbarians and everything they believe - at least where their beliefs are different from everyone else- is evil, then people assume that you're the bad actor, not the society you're criticizing.

Sad, but true.

63 Exactly, EC. Romney: "You want some Hollywood in my campaign? Boom, here you go bitches."

I'd have it go something like this:

-Opening shot of next debate.  Low angle shot of both podiums, from slightly below the stage.

-Cue explosion in background with Mitt Romney running toward camera in slow-motion and vaulting over his podium, camera tracking him, pulling out his magic handkerchief.

-Mitt lands center stage, ninja style, with his handkerchief in his hand, holding it like a gun.

-Close-up shot of Mitt:  "Shit's about to get real!"

109 Great scene, allow me to add this - after "Shit just got real," the camera pans out to see Paul Ryan walking towards Romney in full protective gear with a crossbow at the ready. Paul goes up to Romney and says, "I'm in the mood to kill some terrorists and make some spaghetti afterwards. I hate spaghetti."

And then, have them turn back to back with their hands up, Charlie's Angels style, and have the background illumination turn up so bright it sillhouettes them both in black and white with block letters below them:

Romney - Ryan 2012

Fade out with final massive explosion.

Confidence.

Or Romney simply got bored with debating an empty chair and wanted to tip his hand just to make it a little more challenging.

136 You know, "the new Moderate Mitt" meme that the MFM is trying to get out there will backfire.  They are hoping to drive a wedge and get conservatives to stay home, but they don't get the concept of core values.

We hear this speech and we resonate with it.  Being told it is "Moderate" doesn't work with us.

The persuadable undecides though?  Be careful labeling Mitt as Moderate with them.  That will not work out the way you hope.

137 I like how the MSM is spinning Mitt kicking ass and taking names, by explaining conservative policy and small government philosophy in an effective manner against Obama's tired retread of the same stuff, as "moderate."

I think they're going to regret that formulation.

See, they've made it okay to vote for a "moderate" while those "Conservatives" are soooooo scary.  Mitt has been preaching pretty straight-line Conservatism since at least The Debate.  If they succeed in defining that as "moderate" what are they going to do when VP Ryan runs for Pres in 2020 after two successful Romney terms?

The problem for the MFM, of course, is that most Americans really do lean right- so many Conservative positions are simply common sense (keep more of your own money, Peace through Strength, Free Trade both as an economic and a diplomatic tool, etc.)- that hearing a clear defense of them makes it very hard to call them "radical."

And for the most part it's been an in-house operation, it's been Power and Rice and the rest of the Valerie Jarrett Administration's chosen American apologists, Hillary's been little more than a clerk.

Eleven years later, “they” still hate us, now more than ever, Logan told the crowd. The Taliban and al-Qaida have not been vanquished, she added. They’re coming back.

“When the explorers laid anchor in the Bahamas, they met indigenous peoples who had inhabited the Western hemisphere for millennia,” Obama wrote. “As we reflect on the tragic burdens tribal communities bore in the years that followed, let us commemorate the many contributions they have made to the American experience, and let us continue to strengthen the ties that bind us today.”

Obama has plenty of powerful pieces, with the MFM and his fanboi base, but he lost his queen in a trap and won't recover, unless Romney makes a mistake.

BREAKING!

Stephanie Cutter on CNN

"We are not going to take policy advice from someone who has never bowed to a foreign dictator, apologized for America, or let an Ambassador get ass raped beaten and strangled."

"Mitt Romney simply does not have the foreign policy experience that President Obama does....and Mitt Romney who may be a felon wants to give rich people a 5 Trillion Dollar tax cut...do you realize how much 5 Trillion is?  That is nearly as much as the 6 Trillion in debt that President Obama has created in his first four years!"

"If Mitt Romney really cared about the american people he would have gotten Ace to update last weeks Poster and Sock Puppet counts."

All the things that Obama is claimed to be, up it just one level for Mitt. "Were it not for Mitt, Obama would indeed up the greatest debater of our era. The reality us, he gave a masterful performance after a week of tireless practice with John Kerry. Mitt is just a level above him. So much so that he makes Obama look like a failure in comparison." Not only is it hilarious, but it gives people an excuse to join the preference cascade. Obama is good, Mitt is better, so Mitt should be President now.

244 > we either fight to win or we withdraw on a much faster pace (that is, as soon as militarily possible)<

It would be contra-intellectual and counter-productive to state that any other way.

Fight to win, means military. There is no ambiguity. Our military gets what they  need to do the job. Period.

Withdraw at a much faster pace means without the existing political dribble withdrawal we are engaged in right now- which is getting people killed. Never mind the fact we have announced when. Any military strategist or historian worth their salt could tell you this (current announced withdrawal) is destructive and being proven so.

I was dissapointed Romney didn't hit Mr' Obama's initial remarks back in 2007 about Afghanistan being the war we need to fight (or something like that) and Iraq being a "distraction".

Obama is directly responsible for the turmoil in Iraq today  due to the foolish way he ended our commitment there. All that sacrifice was a fact. It was mostly in the past and there was a vested interest in seeing Iraq succeed on that alone. But he threw it away to fight the "real" war. Then Mr. Obama made that a more dangerous, deadly and curious engagement.

I hope that Mitt has a couple of smack-down lines for al-obama when he starts touting Bin Laden.  A couple of scenarios:

O - I gave the order to kill Bin Laden.

M -Well duh.  That's new policy?  Bush gave the order, you just happened to be in office when the opportunity presented itself.  Was there any other options you considered valid when it came to Bin Laden's final disposition?  Maybe you would rather have had him arrested and put on trial in NYC?  Or maybe you thought about passing up on the opportunity like Bill Clinton did when he was president?  And oh, by the way, how wasn't that decision debated for a good while within your administration?  And why was Valery Jarrett allowed to stall the operation?  Last time I checked, Ms Jarrett isn't even an elected official.

O - I killed Bin Laden

M- No, you did not kill Bin Laden.  Our brave soldiers had that duty and priviledge.  You watched the operation, after being brough in from the golf course, that is.

269 @248.  That is the exact right strategy for Afghanistan.  We don't need a lot of troops in that country.  We need to develop an intelligence network and act on it when necessary.  That may mean a few bombs, it may mean a special forces team.  But we can just get out.  They are not Pakistan, Iran, or Iraq.  We can go in at any time, and should, but only if necessary to destroy some terrorist training camp.

Not sure why you think that.   From Wiki:

In 2010, Jackson wrote in an article that she did not learn how to vote until the 2000 United States Presidential Election.[8] She maintains a personal website containing numerous postings highlighting her conservative political views. She criticized Democrats during the 2008 general election campaign, particularly presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama and Minnesota U.S. senatorial candidate (and fellow SNL alumnus) Al Franken. In October 2008, she appeared with other celebrities in a National Republican Senatorial Committee advertisement poking fun at Franken, then followed up with an interview on The O'Reilly Factor, where she called Obama a "communist."[9] She has repeated the communism claim on multiple occasions.[10][11]

When Obama won the election, she wrote on her blog: "Voters in our last election did not base their decision on facts or knowledge, but on hype, emotion, peer pressure, and racial fervor. It didn't help that the liberally biased media blocked Americans' access to the truth"[12] and she said Fox News is "the only one we should watch."[12]

In 2011, Jackson wrote that she thought she was being spied on because of her conservative views.[13]

In 2011, Jackson criticized the TV show Glee for showing a kiss between two male actors, calling it "sickening", and cited the Bible as one of her reasons for making such a statement. When accused of being homophobic, Jackson countered that that was merely a "cute liberal buzzword", and suggested that Glee should be replaced with a show promoting celibacy instead.[14]

In 2011, Victoria Jackson joined the staff of Patriot Update as a writer and video blogger. Victoria's video on Occupy Wall Street[15] gained national attention when she returned to her former home during her Saturday Night Live years, to interview 'Occupiers' in Zuccotti Park. Soon after, Patriot Update launched a brand new show called Politichicks, featuring Jackson, Ann-Marie Murrrell, Jannique Stewart, and Jennie Jones. The show aims to be a conservative alternative to The View. She now hosts her own web show called The Victoria Jackson Show.

In 2012, Victoria Jackson, through White Hall Press, published her autobiography, "Is My Bow Too Big? How I went from Saturday Night Live to the Tea Party."

284 "If Obama brings up Romney's desire to arm the Syrian rebels and how crazy that is because the weapons might fall into the wrong hands, I have Romney's reply. Fast & Furious." If we were saddled with McCain again, I would have said that there's no way he'd hammer the Empty Chair on that in lieu of nearly campaigning for his opponent. With Romney, on the other hand? I'm pretty sure he will after attacking nearly all his weakest points so far. I have a feeling I won't be screaming at the screen why he missed so many opportunities this time. I'm loving this campaign.

And I will make it clear to the recipients of our aid that, in return for our material support, they must meet the responsibilities of every decent modern government—to respect the rights of all of their citizens, including women and minorities… to ensure space for civil society, a free media, political parties, and an independent judiciary… and to abide by their international commitments to protect our diplomats and our property."

TFG's campaign strategy did a major pivot the second the debate ended, with its new portrayal of Romney as a liar and some new persona he just now made up. Liar. What a flip-flopper! This piece I read said it is a really dangerous tack for the WH campaign, in that the remaining undecideds are low info middle of roaders who call themselves independents. These people typically despise negativity in campaigns. I hope this is right. It seems right.

@318.  For the most part, there is no real need for us average person to show the world which candidate we will support - though an argument can be made that some voters want to vote for the popular candidate and yard signs/bumper stickers are a reflection of that.

In any event, it goes to Hollywood too.  While it is wonderful that Ms. Dash wishes to support Romney, I (and most of the world) have no clue as to who she his (pun intended).  Yet she thought it important to tell the world that she is supporting Romney.

Fox is talking about the Obama camp tripling down on the idea that Romney is a "liar", and that's how he won the debate.

Besides being lame and cowardly, this might possibly backfire, turning into an "Obama ate dog" situation.  Obama is the guy, after all, who took out that ad saying "You didn't build that" was "out of context."  I don't think I've ever seen a sitting President lie so blatantly about someting that was so easy to fact-check, actually TAKING OUT AN AD - spending millions - to make sure you didn't miss his lying to your face!!

Plus, the Benghazi thing - where everybody ought to know by now that Obama was lying his ass off by now.  Those are TWO high-profile, simple and obvious lies.

I have long thought that Obama could lose a LOT of support - even from "leaners" - if people started to talk about Obama as the big, fat liar that he is, ESPECIALLY those single women!

But it's problematic to accuse the "first black president" of being a liar.  Unless of course he starts calling YOU a liar...

337 Nope. I'm a productive member of society, not some two bit wanna be thug like whoever did it. I did however, stand in the parking lot shouting things like "OH, someone's a biiiig man. Gonna key a car for a bumper sticker? Real nice. So who's the tough guy? Huh? Where you at tough guy?"

Sorry, but that's dumb.

The argument of Romney being a liar is the ultimate desperation play.  They are basically admitting that they have nothing left.  Period.  They have no argument to make that can't be refuted.  They are losing and they have lost.  I still say if Romney / Ryan can play the honor/integrity/character card they will bury Obama.

357 The bizarre scene is thought to have been caused after heavy rainfall washed a non-toxic chemical deodorant from a household rubbish tip into the river.

383 Now here's a topic that could liven up the foreign policy debate ...

The Philippine government and Muslim rebels agreed on a deal to end a 40-year conflict that has killed more than 120,000 people, President Benigno Aquino said on Sunday, paving the way for a political and economic revival of the country's troubled south....

The MILF and the government still need to thrash out details of their broad agreement in the months ahead as a 15-member commission drafts a law by 2015 to send to Congress.

The two sides agreed only that there would be "just and equitable" sharing of resources, which are believed to include large reserves of natural gas. Determining how much power the area will have over law, such as its scope to administer sharia justice, is another remaining challenge for negotiators.

PS -- Never do a Google image search for MILF vs. MILF with the office door open!

With the added part (at least, it was news to me) that they're not even checking CVV numbers on credit cards.  Which means they're not even validating that it's you using your credit card.

And I don't expect it goes anywhere legally, but the public needs to be made aware.  I don't think there's any judicial recourse (not realistically, whatever the law says), but it could cause a public outrage that Obama is Enabling/Encouraging credit card fraud or even Identity theft.

Mitt Romney now strides upon the political landscape likes god among men, making Obama seem a mere mortal in comparison. Analysts around DC now privately admit that Mitt Romney's mastery of the political debate will create an history altering landslide in November. Even California, Illinois and Masachusets appear poised to vote for Romney/Ryan. One senior democrat quoted, "Obama is just a few levels below Mitt in every way. Mitt Romney is Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Kennedy, Reagan, and Clinton rolled into one. Mitt Romney is just on a different level than Obama." Several community activist coalitions are calling for change now. "the election is over. Mitt should start using theOffice of the President Elect now, and Obama should get out of the way. Mitt is just better than Obama than every conceivable way."

401 I think I'm completely done with "normal" foreign policy.

Any basket case country that wants aid can pick a five mile by five mile piece of random coastline. And (1) sell it outright, -and- (2) cede all rights to it to the US. It's our "Embassy".

Anyone that walks up to the border, is disarmed, and searched by the guards, is welcome to enter the fringe area and get a daily ration, visit the medical clinic, or visit the American school for the day and try to find a job.

Getting past the fringe to the interior requires passing the naturalization test, fingerprinting, DNA, RFID tagging, and an oath in native language & English to avoid theft, rape, cheating, and murder. (Keep it simple and to the point.)

Jobs include: Digging a port. Flattening an airport. Making a concrete plant. Making a desalination plant. Building a skyscraper in the center.

Think Hong Kong.

"Lioness adopts  baby impala after killing mother."

Seen this before.  Lionesses do this over and over.    It ends, "until the other lions show up..."

Let's be real here.  He did it for the photo op, too.  Don't think that didn't cross his mind.

413 Oh, he did it for the photo op, no doubt.

But he had the confidence and presence of mind to take advantage of the situation.  He wasn't rushing off to meet with a bunch of Hollywood cry babies who have their panties in a wad.

414 Well yeah maybe it was a photo-op chance. But I guarantee he cared more for those Children than Obama and his scripted campaign...

420 @425 - yeah, you have to wonder whether Obama's got a quick-response teleprompter setup with generic canned speeches for various types of ad-hoc event.

I doubt it.  I suspect they will not want to tarnish the public perception of their father (among liberals anyway), since they stand to be major beneficiaries of it.

Minor quibble.  Whatever one thinks of his fiscal and rule-of-law (amnesty) performances, Bush's foreign policy (words and actions) deserve to be at least co-featured "reference points" for a serious discussion.  As in "Bush-esque" as much as "Reaganesque".

Different times, different challenges, etc., apples and oranges in some ways.

But in language (Sept. 20 2001 speech to joint session, West Point speech) and action (A-stan, Iraq, GWOT, preservation of Geneva framework AGAINST inexcusable resistance from ICRC and others, etc.), Bush was very much a good standard.  (there were even very quiet successes as in Colombia, and the diplomatic/strategic coup of the missile defense deals with Poland/Czech Rep., and appropriately low-profile successes in military and intel integration with former Soviet Bloc countries and others)

Yes, yes, yes - the submission to China over the P-3 incident (Powell), the still-unsolved collapse/reversal of the fantastically successful North Korean isolation policy in the second term, the loss of will in Iraq (against Syria and Iran) and the inexcusable dithering there prior to the instant and easy and successful application of common sense (the "surge").

But in rhetoric and resolution along with action and success - on the KEY issues of the day, with differences in times taken into account - Bush was every bit the successful leader Reagan was on national security.

429 I read only the prepared remarks, but was saddened to see Romney makes no policy proposals (other than increased discretionary spending, which isn't really a policy issue.). Four pages and he can't even come up with one specific idea? Give us a taste, Mitt. Like every other issue, no American knows where Mitt Romney stands, least of all him. Foreign policy without policy, tax policy without numbers, a candidate without a compass.

430 " Bush was every bit the successful leader Reagan was on national security." Bush was a national security disaster. It's too soon for revisionist history, because we remember 9/11 too well. In ten or fifteen years you can start spinning, but the wounds are too fresh to forget for now.

Posted by: Jordan at October 08, 2012 11:11 AM (RSG1I)

Nonsense, Jordan.  Document your idiotic comment - and please don't operate on a moronic Beltway/NYT/NPR level.  What wounds?  What's with this idiotic word "spinning"?  No revisionist history, lifetime direct experience during the terms of both presidents mentioned.

Warm up slow do you don't pull any long muscles.  Name one "disaster" under Bush.  Explain how it's a disaster, specifying the clear, concrete, plausible alternatives that would not have been "disastrous".
