— Ace Short version: It's a bitch and a half.
He'd have to win Florida, NC, and Virginia. He leads there.
He'd then have to win New Hampshire and Colorado. He barely leads there.
We assume he wins Indiana -- a state that went for Obama in 2008 but isn't considered competitive anymore.
He'd then have to win either Wisconsin -- where he actually doesn't lead -- or both Nevada and Iowa. Nevada seems doable, but Iowa is such a bluish state it's barely a swing state.
That, or he'd have to Go Big and swipe Michigan or Pennsylvania.
I'm thinking it's time to Go Big and make a play for those states.
Chuck Todd, though, mentions "private data" showing a "structural shift" making Romney the favorite.

So instead of putting his limited resources into Ohio, where he's down by an average of less than 2 points (and where 5 of the last 8 polls have him either down by only 1 point, or ahead), he should put it into states where he's down by an average of 4-5 points?

As I've been phone banking I've been getting several seniors that have have issues w/their ballots (they make mistakes, spill etc). They're not really homebound so they can't keep driving to the BOE.
So I've been calling several of the BOE's on their behalf to figure out how to get new ballots. They can get new ballots if they return the old first and the county BOE can verify it's been returned. AT that point they'll send a new problem.
Here's the problem - I can guarantfuckingtee you there will be counties (hello Cuyahoga and Lucas County!) that don't verify this and won't be diligent in making sure they're not sending out an absentee ballot to someone that already (a) has one or (b) completed it and sent it back in.
Also, I've been told the post office isn't even checking to see if their is postage on the ballots. Apparently postal clerks have been told to waive them through if they see BOE logo on the front even if they don't have stamps.
Early voting is an unmitigated disaster that needs to be banned altogether except for military and people who can document they can't actually vote in person.

Most of your complaint is about absentee ballots; early voting ain't the same
Depends on the state, and how early the voting is: Florida requires a photo ID and signature on voting rolls. Once you sign, you've voted ( can't vote again ) and you're who you say you is. Early voting is two weeks, but not the Sunday before election day.

I agree about the fraud, but the Dems will steal votes regardless of how people vote. Absentee / mail in ballots make it easier, which is why OR and WA have adopted all-mail ballots.
What helps hugely is a state government controlled by Rs who purge dead people, aliens, etc from voter rolls ( like in FL and OH ) and exercise some control over county supervisors of elections.

If the election were held today, MI, PA, IA and NV go for Obama.
FL, NC, NH and CO go for Romney.
That's 249-248 Obama leading Romney.
Whoever wins 2/3 of WI, OH, and VA win it.
I think VA is leaning Romney, WI is leaning Obama, and OH is a coin flip.
Romney needs to be aggressive in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, and he needs not to neglect Nevada and Iowa. A few appearances in Michigan wouldn't hurt either.

Yes. Iowans are the biggest rent-seekers out there (well 2nd to Hollywood). They are culturally conservative, but have no problem putting their economic interest above all else. Between the corn lobby, and the ancillary goodies they get from being the first caucas state, they live off the federal government. A Romney/Ryan win would really be a threat to them. Though sadly, I don't ever seeing those subsidies going away.

Speaking from purely anecdotal evidence, I visited my sister in Hershey, PA, last week, and there were a LOT of Romney, Romney/Ryan, and anti-Obama signs and stickers. Not so many that it woudl indicate a clear preference cascade, but enough to say, "There are people here who ARE NOT going to follow the herd. You're not alone." My sister hadn't really noticed them before, but as I kept pointing them out she got more and more excited. Her words, and I quote, "My vote might actually MATTER this year."
Pennsylvania is definitely up for grabs. It won't be easy, but it's doable.

Ace,
Whoa there.
The latest polling on the electoral college numbers puts O 277 and R 261.
I do not think this is as tricky as you are portraying.
Romney essentially needs 9 more elecoral votes and this can be achieved by flipping just Wisconsin which has 10.
Or flipping Iowa and Nevada which each have 6 votes.
Ideally, it would be best to win Ohio with 18 electoral votes.
Bottom line, momentum is on Romney's side and Ohio is not secure to Obama by any stretch of the imagination.
Additionally, Wisconsin is still in play.
Stay strong my friends. And pray, it's good for the soul.

My electoral map shows Romney with 323 for the win. why? basically because if you say he is going to win one of these closer states, say OH, then he is likely to get a majority of the swing states.
One more thing, the headline could say 'Obama's path without Ohio', but then again, no it could not, OH is the whole ballgame for that rat bastard.

The truth is that most folks are sick of the dirty tricks and unpleasantness foisted upon us by the unions and democrat whiners, and will vote against the asshats whether we respond to polls or not. So, I'm gonna call it for Romney. But that is just me, of course.
Posted by: tcn at October 15, 2012 10:47 AM (ZOUmX)
McCain states + IN + FL + NC + VA + OH = 266EV
There are 7 other swing states, Romney would just need one more.
But lose OH and those 18 are hard to make up - unless you can pull off PA. I've heard that PA had been just about written off, but is close to even now.
1) Does anybody have a read about how safe FL, NC, and VA are right now? I hear conflicting things.
2) Conventional wisdom says OH is pretty tight, but "Dave in FL" adjusts for the partisan mix in the polls, and averages, and has Romney up by about 4% (depending on which of his models you go by).
3) It's a statistical fact that if you average independent, unbiased samples, you get a more accurate result. My problem with the polls is that they do NOT seem to be unbiased to me. Nobody can really say that the people who are willing to answer polls have the same opinion mix as people who don't, and this time you hear that 90% don't answer. Theoretically, these polls could be WAY off.
4) I worry about questioning the polls, because we did so last time, and McCain lost anyway. But perhaps the message there is that the polls WERE wrong!! They were wrong in Obama's favor, but they were wrong.
5) Another worry is voter motivation. Can the Obama voters really be motivated, as they seem to be saying? I have trouble believing that - they know he broke almost all his promises to them, has a generally abysmal record, and he doesn't have that "make history" thing going on. Like the guy on PJ says, "Just look around you - how many Obama signs do you see? How many people are singing his praises?" Hell, I'm in upstate NY, and you wouldn't even know an election is going on.

Regardless of what the polls may be showing, I think Romney has a pretty good shot at both WI (ie Scott Walker and Paul Ryan-land) and NV.
So even assuming he doesn't win Ohio, I think he's got a good chance at the "second pathway" and bluntly, again, regardless of how the polls look right now, I think he's got a reasonable shot at Ohio too.

VOTE on 11/6, Vote Republican and Conservative.
VOTE Conservative for the local races and vote conservative for the JUDGES. For me, it is easy, VOTE anyone but the incumbent judge.

I do think we need Ohio. I'm not sure Romney can win without it. Sure there are alternative paths, but if he can't win OH, I find it hard to believe he will win some other states.
All that being said, I think he takes Ohio and those other states so the point is moot.
But if he loses Ohio, it probably means he is losing elsewhere.

Percentages don't matter though, even in MO and S. IL people are conditioned to believe that without the Corn Subsidies the entire state economy would dry up. (Heck, with the recent drought you'd think MO had no other industry besides farming based on the news reports.)

Maybe you have to live here, but the ads tell the whole story. Romney is running confident ads, just him laying out his plan. Obama's ads? Desperate. That obviously edited 60 Minutes interview one, scare ads targeting women, ads that do nothing more than call Romney a liar. He knows he's losing it, and he's throwing every slimy attack he can on the airwaves. There are very few bones in my body that believe he has even a chance here.

4) I worry about questioning the polls, because we did so last time, and McCain lost anyway. But perhaps the message there is that the polls WERE wrong!! They were wrong in Obama's favor, but they were wrong.
McCain was the incumbent in the mind of the undecided voters, and when you are undecided on election day, you usually vote for the challenger. This favors Mitt in 2012.

I tend to agree with you. This is pretty unscientific, but I'm not seeing lots of Obama signs and I'm seeing R/R signs in unexpected places (like Shorewood and the East Side of Milwaukee). The R/R troops are very fired up. I'm much less confident about Thompson, because he's run an awful campaign. I think he assumed that he was just going to coast to victory based on past elections and name recognition and didn't expect to have to work hard to win.

The thing is, if it's close in both PA and OH, both are about a 50/50 chance and there's a 75% chance that Romney gets at least one. PA is worth a couple more than OH.
I don't feel good about MI, so the next biggest states are WI, CO, NV, IA, with 10, 9, 6, and 6. WI + CO replaces OH, but then you still need one more state - any state.

As an Ohioan, I tend to agree. I hate being a swing state. I can't even watch football on Sunday without having idiots lie to me throughout the game...and pregame...and postgame. It's been one commercial after another. I think Romney's going to win Ohio, but even if he doesn't, it's got to be disheartening for the Obama campaign to spend the amount of money they are spending here, only to have the polls tighten in Romney's favor. Even if Obama ends up winning Ohio, that's money he's not spending in other states.

NC barely went for Obama last time. He won it 49.9% to McCain 49.5%.
In addition, Bob Barr was a "spoiler" with 0.6%, with most of that probably going to McCain if Barr weren't on the ticket. So Obama really only won NC by a small fraction of a percent.
That was with historically unprecedented African American turnout in a State with the highest percentage of African Americans of any "swing" state.
There is just no way that Obama is going to do as well this time again. NC is lost to him.

I want him to win so far beyond the Margin of Fraud that he knows without a doubt we want Obamacare legislated out of existence. Ohio isn't that bad. I've been to roughly half of the states, and I'd place Ohio roughly in the middle. Of course, in mid-February, when I'm so sick of winter I want to kill myself, then I might have a different opinion. But even taking winter into consideration, that would make Ohio better than any state further north than Ohio, in my opinion.
But I also get a bit tired of the whiny blue-collar BS crap that goes on here. The successful people tend to leave Ohio (because they have to), while those left behind whine because there are no longer any factory jobs. Then learn a skill, you dumbass, instead of lamenting the fact that you can no longer get paid a union-mandated $40 an hour to tighten bolts all day (plus excellent benefits).
I may move out of Ohio one day, but if I do it will probably be North or South Carolina. I rather like California, but I'd only move there if about 2/3 of the current population left. Which might actually happen in my lifetime.

I fear this next one Mitt's going to be assaulting a heavily-fortified position. Barry without the press is an empty-headed boy-whore for wealthy Pakistanis. Barry with the press is the Sun King who can do no wrong. They (the press) got caught flat-footed last time - Lehrer didn't challenge Mitt enough and actually let there be a somewhat-debate. That won't happen again. The debate will be carefully controlled to benefit Barry.

via WeaselZippers:
President ObamaÂ’s distaste for debate preparation may be mitigated by the location his current tutorial, the fabulous Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg Virginia, featuring stunning scenery, deluxe accommodations, and three championship golf courses.
A portion of the tab for this luxury is of course being picked up by taxpayers, who largely footed the bill to fly Obama down there aboard Air Force One and house his White House retinue in Williamsburg for three nights. Presumably many of his aides, including a large security detail, are at the hotel itself.
Exactly why Obama needed to be training for his debate at the Kingsmill Resort instead of the White House or Camp David is unclear.

That being the case, if you assume that Romney wins Florida, NC, CO and VA (for which the current polling looks very good), Wisconsin gets us to 267 in the EC. Then we need one of Nevada, Iowa, New Hampshire, or Ohio.
I think Romney is more likely to win Iowa or NH than Ohio at this stage, but that will be enough. If he wins Ohio too, great, that's gravy.
What I'm really hoping for, as we all are, is that the Romney surge continues (call it a preference cascade or a massive Gestalt moment or an Emperor Has No Clothes epiphany or whatever), and he wins Nevada, Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, NH, VA, NC, and FL.

I was disappointed in the size of the crowd. Then again, in '04 I was seeing BOOOSH in a convention center and stadium, and Palin at a VA rally 15,000 strong. This was... um, intimate. (And if there's any of the 4 candidates I'd like to be intimate with, it's Dreamy the Math Witch.)
Still, not too bad for noon on a Monday. It was well organized. Plane landed, he talked about 10 minutes, worked the rope lines, got back on the plane. Then they fed us BBQ
There was clear and close attention to optics-- placement of a huge flag, banner, and the plane, which made me happy. Couple people passing out sample R ballots. Lots of emphasis on early voting.
And LOTS of pictures from my spot 10 yards away. The whole crowd in my section helped maneuver an elderly lady to a good spot on the rope line. She came away saying, "He looks just like he does on TV! His eyes really are that blue!"

When I was in Ohio 3 weeks ago for a rally the guy next to me said that Obama only won Ohio by like 5 counties... Counties he has lost support in.
Anyway.. he said.. suppress vote in Cleveland.. and Romney wins.
The rest of Ohio is as red as Texas.

Not farm subsidies, not "taking away your medicare", not "will appoint judges who will...". No. Pro-Planned Parenthood subsidies.
And this was an Obama ad, with him "approving" and everything.
I don't know what he's doing, but I think Iowa will go Romney by a lesser margin than Ohio.
Iowans like their corn subsidies but they hate all the others. It's kinda like West Virginia in that way.

Have you seen the story on the Voter Fraud billboards in Cleveland? The crap the lefties say proves that they win by cheating.
"An election-related billboard in ClevelandÂ’s Ward 5 has caused a stir, prompting some complaints that it discriminates against minority groups and felons."

I've listened to that clip above twice...
Chuck Todd is saying that their 'private data' has Barky losing.
That...'structural shift'...is happening in his rhetoric, in talking about this race.
Many of us have sensed for a long time that this could be a blowout for Romney --- and a bloodbath for Barky.
Question is, why is Chuck Todd saying this now?
Trying to get ahead of it?

The SCOAMT is between a rock and a hard place in this next debate. I'm sure they thought that a smug, aggressive Biden would get the needed approval so that Baraka could come in doing the same to finish the job. So an agressive, interrupting and screechy preezy ain't gonna git 'er done either.
And he certainly can't talk about his foreign policy record.

I flung the door open and greeted them heartily, said I was a Catholic and thus already had a religion, but I was enthusiastically supporting Mitt Romney. They got these huge smiles on their faces. I told them the should work the neighborhood hard for Romney. Sheepishly, they said they couldn't get into politics.
Sure. I'm thinking its a master stroke. They're GOTV without the politics. I'll bet every missionary for LDS is on the streets of the US for the next three weeks.

I think both sides know Colorado will go Romney, and Iowa is a coin toss. Gay marriage has to be hurting Obama in Iowa, and I suspect you'll see a silent majority arrive at the polls. Nevada looks like it leans Obama, but it does have an enormous LDS population, and it is a state that is traditionally Republican with the highest unemployment in the nation. It's very winnable.

And on top of that, that Crowley is the name used by a crossroads demon in "Supernatural" who goes on to become the King of Hell. And also the last name of the protagonist demon in "Good Omens" (which is a great book, btw). It has a lot of demonic connotations is what I'm getting at.

My son worked in NW Ohio selling books door to door. Nice people but a little mixed up. His land lady had six grown kids, 500 some grand childern from mixed marriages that mostly had failed. Doesn't seem like the church has much to do with these people any more. They all come to see her for money, of course, but none of them went to college and all are sort of just drifting along.

I wish this election was about splitting up the States to form two new countries. Whoever your state voted for would decide which country you would belong to.
I bet those Union workers in Ohio would not vote to join a new country that hates the military and big business. The government would be their new employer.
Of course they would realize that since they wouldn't have the Conservative business owners ,taxpayers and consumers to support the fuck ups of their union system, they would soon see their beloved present day unions dissovled by a leftist government.

One guy made headlines for doing so, but I've heard other polls, for example, that say FL is within 1%. The question is, does anybody have any supporting evidence for whether that guy knows what the hell he's talking about [crosses fingers]? We really need FL. There are other ways, if NC or VA are lost, if we pick up OH and/or PA.

Imagine busloads of coal miners going precinct to precinct casting ballots or people trying to vote twice, registering people in the household that don't live there, trying to cast both an absentee ballot, vote early, etc. If Republicans "pushed the envelope" there would be real bipartisan voter fraud reform in all 50 states, but as long as it continues to benefit Democrats, they're never going to do what's right for the sanctity of democracy.
I'm not saying it's right, but every election we go through this and every time it's swept under the rug.
For the record, I think we'll overcome these issues in Ohio, the fact that Obama barely won the state in 2008 doesn't speak well for his chances, especially since they now have a Voter ID law on the books and nearly 500k ineligible voters have been thrown off. But could I see a scenario where Romney comfortably wins the popular vote but loses because of shennanigans in Ohio? Yes.

Sounds very reassuring! Except that last part, of course.
The Dems crack me up on their sanctimonious Voter ID crap. They claim to be the defenders of minorities, but what they're literally doing is saying "blacks and other minorities are either too lazy or too incompetent to get a voter ID". It does not speak well for those demographic sectors that they put up with being talked about that way. If they had any self-respect, they'd kick somebody's ass for that.
It's really about milking the fraud, but they love to call themselves virtuous when they're committing their fascism.

Here in Colorado, I've noticed the Obama yard signs are disappearing, and the bumper stickers are becoming few and far between. Meanwhile Romney BANNERS (10 ft. '+) are being seen more and more. This is in the suburban areas. Out in the rural parts of the state, the is Zero support for TFG.

1) WI and NH,
or
2) NV and IA.
These are the 2 other possible pathways. [or WI + NV] He does not need NH if he loses Ohio, or even 1 from Maine.
Losing OH gives Mitt a 23.7% chance of winning election according to 538.com, assuming he wins states noted above. If he wins Ohio and Colorado though, SCOAMF will be getting swept out the door.
