Romney's Path, Without Ohio
— Ace

Short version: It's a bitch and a half.

He'd have to win Florida, NC, and Virginia. He leads there.

He'd then have to win New Hampshire and Colorado. He barely leads there.

We assume he wins Indiana -- a state that went for Obama in 2008 but isn't considered competitive anymore.

He'd then have to win either Wisconsin -- where he actually doesn't lead -- or both Nevada and Iowa. Nevada seems doable, but Iowa is such a bluish state it's barely a swing state.

That, or he'd have to Go Big and swipe Michigan or Pennsylvania.

I'm thinking it's time to Go Big and make a play for those states.

Chuck Todd, though, mentions "private data" showing a "structural shift" making Romney the favorite.

So instead of putting his limited resources into Ohio, where he's down by an average of less than 2 points (and where 5 of the last 8 polls have him either down by only 1 point, or ahead), he should put it into states where he's down by an average of 4-5 points?

27 my only though at the moment is that polls inevitably seems to give the Dem an extra point or two and understate the Rep by a point or two.
The best reason to think that Romney will win is because he wants to... but maybe that's just me engaging in wishful thinking. No telling what That Guy and his crew will try to pull off to win this. Otherwise it'll be years of "Barry!!!" this and "Barry!!!" that from a certain annoying spouse.

33 There's actually an ARG poll of Iowa out today, first Iowa poll I have seen in a while, that has the state all tied up. http://tinyurl.com/clt9446 But I guess I'm in the minority because I never thought what happened as a result of the Demolition in Denver was just a bounce. It allowed the huge number of people who wanted to vote against Obama to find a viable alternative. I think Romney takes Ohio by roughly 3% and the race isn't as close as it looks now.

47 If Ohio goes for Obama this time then the country is truly lost - Romney isn't a lightworker but at least with him we've got a chance to miss the iceberg instead of making a beeline for it at ramming speed under Obama. I don't think that most voters know how fundamentally different the country will look after four more years with Obama (and likely Reid in the Senate) at the helm. Obamacare alone will wreak havoc on all but the poor and lower middle class. Not to mention the stagnate economic growth becoming a permanent feature for ours (and our offsprings) future. If swing states like Ohio buy into Obama's nonsense again then we all get what we deserve and would be prudent to prepare for the worst.

65 I like to imagine the country as a topographical map where states are at different elevations-- the red states are higher and the blue states are lower. Water rises and recedes like a quadrennial tide; when it's low tide, republicans win. When the tide is high, democrats do. The states themselves don't change much. Ohio for instance is right at the average mean tide level. When the tide is higher than average, it is covered with blue. When it is high and dry, Republicans win it, and the nation. That's why Ohio is so important-- not for its 18 EVS but what it signals about the sea level in the country.

85 The deal is Ohio will be close. It will take forever to count and/or come in. Meanwhile that will not prevent the MSM from calling it early and wrong--or hinting to their audience that their exit polls show it in the bag for Obama. They can and/or will do that. They've done it before. There's no way MSNBC doesn't try something like that. It will be effective in depressing turn out in later time zones if they do that. It is very important to keep hope alive for Republicans westward-till Nevada if necessary--enthusiasm matters in close elections. Florida was only won by 1,000 votes--not only was it called wrong for Gore but it was called for Goer early before the western panhandle had even stopped voting. The liberal media is doing the expectations game again this time with Ohio. Watch MSNBC and they are spinning the--no Republican has won without Ohio. Since 1900 Ohio has always picked the winner... That's the set up. It needs some pre-emption.

Posted by: tasker at October 15, 2012 10:10 AM (r2PLg)

86 The only way we lose Ohio is because of fraud (which is likely).

As I've been phone banking I've been getting several seniors that have have issues w/their ballots (they make mistakes, spill etc). They're not really homebound so they can't keep driving to the BOE.

So I've been calling several of the BOE's on their behalf to figure out how to get new ballots. They can get new ballots if they return the old first and the county BOE can verify it's been returned. AT that point they'll send a new problem.

Here's the problem - I can guarantfuckingtee you there will be counties (hello Cuyahoga and Lucas County!) that don't verify this and won't be diligent in making sure they're not sending out an absentee ballot to someone that already (a) has one or (b) completed it and sent it back in.

Also, I've been told the post office isn't even checking to see if their is postage on the ballots. Apparently postal clerks have been told to waive them through if they see BOE logo on the front even if they don't have stamps.

Early voting is an unmitigated disaster that needs to be banned altogether except for military and people who can document they can't actually vote in person.

94 Yes,  look  at the crowds.  In 2008, Obama won in places he had no business winning in -  IN.  I expect Romney to follow suit.  He will win in places he has no business winning in.

Posted by: SH at October 15, 2012 10:12 AM (gmeXX)

95 79 I'm still predicting that Romney takes Ohio, PA, MI, and Wisc. Add VA and FL which I think are already in the bag, plus NH, and of course my prediction that Romney will take one of the Northwestern states plus a typical blue eastern state (ME or NJ). I could see Iowa staying blue - they really really want those corn subsidies. That trumps all for Iowa. The cascade is building. Plus the close elections of 2000 and 2004 are not the norm of modern day elections. The good news is that we are only 3 weeks away. Posted by: SH at October 15, 2012 02:07 PM (gmeXX) --Government subsidies corrupt the hell out of people. The worst part about it is that it fuels the endless cycle of tu quoque and the average voter gets that "screw 'em all" attitude. For example, a Moron favorite (she's pretty hot) is Kristi Noem, at-large Representative from SD. This past summer while driving through her state I heard an ad for her and one of the highlights was her defending the ethanol subsidies.

Depends on the state, and how early the voting is:  Florida requires a photo ID and signature on voting rolls.  Once you sign, you've voted ( can't vote again ) and you're who you say you is.  Early voting is two weeks, but not the Sunday before election day.

What helps hugely is a state government controlled by Rs who purge dead people, aliens, etc from voter rolls ( like in FL and OH ) and exercise some control over county supervisors of elections.

173 Good main blog post.  Here's the problem with the "Go Big" strategy,   however:  It's too risky.  For as blue as Iowa is Michigan and Pennsylvania   even are bluer.  At least Bush 43 won Iowa.  No Republican Prez candidate   has taken either MI or PA, however, since 1988.  And it really hasn't been close.  Plus the latter two states cost a lot more money.  If you make a pitch for   MI and PA you by definition drain resources away from IA, thereby putting yourself in a position to lose all three of them, perhaps handing Obama a   2nd term.  Broad-front attacks tend to get bogged down and eventually to defeat themselves.  You end up marching in place.  Overwhelming   concentrated force on a narrow front is how battles are won.  Focus heavily   on OH, FL and VA.  Marshal a reserve.  The reserve goes to NH, CO, IA   and NV.  Forget about MI and PA.  Any leftovers go to WI.

174 Ha. Ryan didn't wash that pot. someone else made that happen. in fact, we can thank obama. he made that happen. without his crappy economy, we'd have fewer people at soup kitchens and no pots to wash. it's the broken windows, except under obama it's broken lives.

175 Other  than  Cleveland  support  for  Soetoro  is  soft.  People  here  are  disgusted  by  his  policies  and  lies  - and  they  are  vocal  about  it.  Ohio  will  go  for  Romney.

176 Oh, bullshit. Ace needs to get over his Ohio OCD. Romney will either win all of these or none of these. Ohio is not some special flower that thinks differently than all the rest of the states. Romney is winning Ohio. Both campaigns are spinning it. Romney needs to keep people thinking it is close to keep energy and work up. Obama can't be seen as losing Ohio because it is a MUST WIN. The way things have now broken, Obama can't win without it.

If the election were held today, MI, PA, IA and NV go for Obama.

Whoever wins 2/3 of WI, OH, and VA win it.

264 It's actually not that hard to win without Ohio.  Assuming Ohio is very close (and it's probably a 5-point Romney win today) that means other similar states are also going to be very close and so Romney would probably take one of MI, PA, or WI.

BTW I see almost no chance Obama can hold NH and IA.  They are gone, gone, gone.  He may lose MN as well.  The Midwest is not happy.

Ace,

Whoa there.

The latest polling on the electoral college numbers puts O 277 and R 261.

I do not think this is as tricky as you are portraying.

Romney essentially needs 9  more elecoral votes and this can be achieved by flipping just Wisconsin which has 10.

Or flipping Iowa and Nevada which each have 6 votes.

Ideally, it would be best to win Ohio with 18 electoral votes.

Bottom line, momentum is on Romney's side and Ohio is not secure to Obama by any stretch of the imagination.

Additionally, Wisconsin is still in play.

Stay strong my friends.  And pray, it's good for the soul.

My electoral map shows Romney with 323 for the win.  why?  basically because if you say he is going to win one of these closer states, say OH, then he is likely to get a majority of the swing states.

283 OH is still tight but not hopeless. But it's good to have a contingency plan there, because Dems got it into their head after '04 that it's a must win. So, Obama has spent $49 million there this year and campaigned in the state for the past four years. WI is a good play, because Walker's recall means there is a good ground game, the troops are very motivated and local Dem groups are flat broke. NV is also showing some movement. It's more fluid, because the Dems have left it alone. Obama goes there for fundraisers, but there are plenty of gaming industry bigwigs like Wynn who know Obama is poison to private industry. Sandoval is a popular governor there, too. WI and NV seem like the best back up plan.

Posted by: © Sponge at October 15, 2012 10:47 AM (UK9cE)

292 Here's the deal with Wisconsin. We voted for Scott Walker, twice, and it was really no contest. But, we've been putting up with political campaigning non-stop for three years, without much break before that, and we are damned tired of the whole thing. That said, you also need to know that the polls that get taken around here are overwhelmingly sampled in the Soviet Socialist Republic of Dane County (i.e. Madison), and so even people who claim they are conservatives tend to be squishes in these polls.

The truth is that most folks are sick of the dirty tricks and unpleasantness foisted upon us by the unions and democrat whiners, and will vote against the asshats whether we respond to polls or not. So, I'm gonna call it for  Romney. But that is just me, of course.

Posted by: tcn at October 15, 2012 10:47 AM (ZOUmX)

293

McCain states + IN + FL + NC + VA + OH = 266EV

There are 7 other swing states, Romney would just need one more.

But lose OH and those 18 are hard to make up - unless you can pull off PA.  I've heard that PA had been just about written off, but is close to even now.

1) Does anybody have a read about how safe FL, NC, and VA are right now?  I hear conflicting things.

2) Conventional wisdom says OH is pretty tight, but "Dave in FL" adjusts for the partisan mix in the polls, and averages, and has Romney up by about 4% (depending on which of his models you go by).

3) It's a statistical fact that if you average independent, unbiased samples, you get a more accurate result.  My problem with the polls is that they do NOT seem to be unbiased to me.  Nobody can really say that the people who are willing to answer polls have the same opinion mix as people who don't, and this time you hear that 90% don't answer.  Theoretically, these polls could be WAY off.

4) I worry about questioning the polls, because we did so last time, and McCain lost anyway.  But perhaps the message there is that the polls WERE wrong!! They were wrong in Obama's favor, but they were wrong.

5) Another worry is voter motivation.  Can the Obama voters really be motivated, as they seem to be saying?  I have trouble believing that - they know he broke almost all his promises to them, has a generally abysmal record, and he doesn't have that "make history" thing going on.  Like the guy on PJ says, "Just look around you - how many Obama signs do you see? How many people are singing his praises?" Hell, I'm in upstate NY, and you wouldn't even know an election is going on.

Regardless of what the polls may be showing, I think Romney has a pretty good shot at both WI (ie Scott Walker and Paul Ryan-land) and NV.

So even assuming he doesn't win Ohio, I think he's got a good chance at the "second pathway" and bluntly, again, regardless of how the polls look right now, I think he's got a reasonable shot at Ohio too.

Maybe you have to live here, but the ads tell the whole story.  Romney is running confident ads, just him laying out his plan.  Obama's ads?  Desperate.  That obviously edited 60 Minutes interview one, scare ads targeting women, ads that do nothing more than call Romney a liar.  He knows he's losing it, and he's throwing every slimy attack he can on the airwaves.  There are very few bones in my body that believe he has even a chance here.

4) I worry about questioning the polls, because we did so last time, and McCain lost anyway. But perhaps the message there is that the polls WERE wrong!! They were wrong in Obama's favor, but they were wrong.

McCain was the incumbent in the mind of the undecided voters, and when you are undecided on election day, you usually vote for the challenger.  This favors Mitt in 2012.

I tend to agree with you. This is pretty unscientific, but I'm not seeing lots of Obama signs and I'm seeing R/R signs in unexpected places (like Shorewood and the East Side of Milwaukee). The R/R troops are very fired up. I'm much less confident about Thompson, because he's run an awful campaign. I think he assumed that he was just going to coast to victory based on past elections and name recognition and didn't expect to have to work hard to win.

The thing is, if it's close in both PA and OH, both are about a 50/50 chance and there's a 75% chance that Romney gets at least one.  PA is worth a couple more than OH.

I don't feel good about MI, so the next biggest states are WI, CO, NV, IA, with 10, 9, 6, and 6. WI + CO replaces OH, but then you still need one more state - any state.

Posted by: Optimizer at October 15, 2012 10:58 AM (4MJt/)

351 339 The best case scenario is that Romney loses Ohio and wins the Presidency. Because then I would never have to hear this crap about Ohio again.

As an Ohioan, I tend to agree. I hate being a swing state. I can't even watch football on Sunday without having idiots lie to me throughout the game...and pregame...and postgame. It's been one commercial after another. I think Romney's going to win Ohio, but even if he doesn't, it's got to be disheartening for the Obama campaign to spend the amount of money they are spending here, only to have the polls tighten in Romney's favor. Even if Obama ends up winning Ohio, that's money he's not spending in other states.

NC barely went for Obama last time.   He won it 49.9% to McCain 49.5%.

In addition, Bob Barr was a "spoiler" with 0.6%, with most of that probably going to McCain if Barr weren't on the ticket.  So Obama really only won NC by a small fraction of a percent.

That was with historically unprecedented African American turnout in a State with the highest percentage of African Americans of any "swing" state.

There is just no way that Obama is going to do as well this time again.  NC is lost to him.

420 366 Ohio's that bad, eh?

Ohio isn't that bad. I've been to roughly half of the states, and I'd place Ohio roughly in the middle. Of course, in mid-February, when I'm so sick of winter I want to kill myself, then I might have a different opinion. But even taking winter into consideration, that would make Ohio better than any state further north than Ohio, in my opinion.

But I also get a bit tired of the whiny blue-collar BS crap that goes on here. The successful people tend to leave Ohio (because they have to), while those left behind whine because there are no longer any factory jobs. Then learn a skill, you dumbass, instead of lamenting the fact that you can no longer get paid a union-mandated $40 an hour to tighten bolts all day (plus excellent benefits).

I may move out of Ohio one day, but if I do it will probably be North or South Carolina. I rather like California, but I'd only move there if about 2/3 of the current population left. Which might actually happen in my lifetime.

I'd be happy if there was only the one debate.  Mitt couldn't do any better and Barry couldn't do any worse.

I fear this next one Mitt's going to be assaulting a heavily-fortified position.  Barry without the press is an empty-headed boy-whore for wealthy Pakistanis.  Barry with the press is the Sun King who can do no wrong.  They (the press) got caught flat-footed last time - Lehrer didn't challenge Mitt enough and actually let there be a somewhat-debate.   That won't happen again.  The debate will be carefully controlled to benefit Barry.

via WeaselZippers:

President ObamaÂ’s distaste for debate preparation may be mitigated by the location his current tutorial, the fabulous Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg Virginia, featuring stunning scenery, deluxe accommodations, and three championship golf courses.

A portion of the tab for this luxury is of course being picked up by taxpayers, who largely footed the bill to fly Obama down there aboard Air Force One and house his White House retinue in Williamsburg for three nights. Presumably many of his aides, including a large security detail, are at the hotel itself.

Exactly why Obama needed to be training for his debate at the Kingsmill Resort instead of the White House or Camp David is unclear.

Romney wins Wisconsin.   Put it in the bank.  Paul Ryan is wildly popular here, Scott Walker won election as Governor (twice), Tommy Thompson will win the Senate seat easiliy, and Wisconsin Republicans are probably the most motivated partisan Republicans in the nation.   Romney will win Wisconsin, period.

That being the case, if you assume that Romney wins Florida, NC, CO and VA (for which the current polling looks very good), Wisconsin gets us to 267 in the EC.   Then we need one of Nevada, Iowa, New Hampshire, or Ohio.

I think Romney is more likely to win Iowa or NH than Ohio at this stage, but that will be enough.   If he wins Ohio too, great, that's gravy.

What I'm really hoping for, as we all are, is that the Romney surge continues (call it a preference cascade or a massive Gestalt moment or an Emperor Has No Clothes epiphany or whatever), and he wins Nevada, Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, NH, VA, NC, and FL.

437 Just got back from the Ryan rally.

I was disappointed in the size of the crowd.  Then again, in '04 I was seeing BOOOSH in a convention center and stadium, and Palin at a VA rally 15,000 strong.  This was... um, intimate.  (And if there's any of the 4 candidates I'd like to be intimate with, it's Dreamy the Math Witch.)

Still, not too bad for noon on a Monday.  It was well organized.  Plane landed, he talked about 10 minutes, worked the rope lines, got back on the plane.  Then they fed us BBQ

There was clear and close attention to optics-- placement of a huge flag, banner, and the plane, which made me happy.  Couple people passing out sample R ballots.  Lots of emphasis on early voting.

And LOTS of pictures from my spot 10 yards away.  The whole crowd in my section helped maneuver an elderly lady to a good spot on the rope line.  She came away saying, "He looks just like he does on TV!  His eyes really are that blue!"

444 So Dem MSM was saying that "undecided" at the town hall at Hofstra University in Nassau county would be fine because- "Nassau is a Republican county". 2008 Presidential Results Nassau County Obama-- 53% McCain-- 46% ____________ Lat debate IIRC not many questions were taken. If the moderator gets to follow up like last time Obama and the moderator get to decide which issue is talked about for most of the time. It was filibuster central from Obama last ton hall who --with the aide of the moderator deciding follow up--only something like six questions from the public were addressed. I think the best Romney can do is a draw in this environment. Remember it is undecided voters determined by Gallup from the area of Nassau county and environs. Again,Nassau county went for Obama despite the Dem MSM labeling it--"Republican". Also the audience is determined by lottery and the tickets for the lottery are given to student and faculty.

I flung the door open and greeted them heartily, said I was a Catholic and thus already had a religion, but I was enthusiastically supporting Mitt Romney.  They got these huge smiles on their faces.  I told them the should work the neighborhood hard for Romney.  Sheepishly, they said they couldn't get into politics.

Sure.  I'm thinking its a master stroke.  They're GOTV without the politics. I'll bet every missionary for LDS is on the streets of the US for the next three weeks.

463 Ohio keeps me up at night, and I agree that Romney would be wise to make a play for PA or MI.  The money would go a lot further since these states have basically been left uncontested by both candidates.  Couldn't Romney just make a "personal loan" of $30 million to devote to one or both of those states?  If the race is uncontested, but within the margin of error, money on one side can REALLY move the needle quickly.  Both states have Republican Governors with lopsided Republican legislatures, why is it so hard to believe Romney can't win those states?

I think both sides know Colorado will go Romney, and Iowa is a coin toss.  Gay marriage has to be hurting Obama in Iowa, and I suspect you'll see a silent majority arrive at the polls.  Nevada looks like it leans Obama, but it does have an enormous LDS population, and it is a state that is traditionally Republican with the highest unemployment in the nation.  It's very winnable.

473 Someone once said that 'willing suspension of disbelief' was something that a writer could achieve by creating human interest and a semblance of truth to a fantastic (in today's vernacular we would use the word fantasy) story. That the reader would suspend judgment concerning the implausibility of the narrative. Today we have nearly half the population that engages in this fantasy. They believe the implausible narrative that if we only find the near infinite number of wealthy in this country and tax the living hell out of them that all of societies problems will magically disappear and their lives will be magically improved. The 'writers' of the fantasy narrative are liberal politicians as the actors who create a semblance of truth while keeping a straight face, banking on the premise that their target audience will suspend any judgement as to the plausibility of the politicians fantastic claims. Somehow, I hope that Romney can smack Obama in the face, sometime during the debates, and hit him with some numbers that slay this magic dragon the liberals have created. Not on my behalf, but so that my children and grandchildren can have a future where their achievements are rewarded, and not punished with onerous levels of taxation.

479 I'm thinking its a master stroke. They're GOTV without the politics. I'll bet every missionary for LDS is on the streets of the US for the next three weeks. Not talking politics, of course. Of course. Posted by: Derak at October 15, 2012 03:23 PM (lkjWK) ---------------------------------- The LDS Church has changed the rules for serving on a mission and hopes to expand the Missionary Ranks by 40,000 over the next few years. Not in time for the election, but just think about that.

480 Iowa has Same Sex Marriage on the ballot, again, in the form of elections to get rid of more of the "justices" who imposed SSM on Iowa.  In 2010 all the justices on the ballot lost by 10%+.  You really think people are going to go to teh ballot to vote out those judges, then turn around and vote for the guy who wants to appoint US Supreme Court Justices who will do the same thing to the entire country?

Iowa is going for Romney.

483 Not only do I think he can do it, I think he will do it and in fact have a little bet with some friends about electoral votes. I said 278, which would be him losing Ohio and Iowa while picking up Colorado, NH, and Wisconsin (and the one vote from Maine). I do think Wisconsin has now moved further to the right than Ohio over the last couple of years.

485 Bush won Iowa in 2004. It's Reagan Democrat country, ripe for Romney. I think he wins it with the same razor thin margin Bush did.

And that right there is why you don't write stories like this, i'll never understand what anybody thinks they'll gain with these kind of articles, it depresses the base of whoever the articles written about and energizes the other side, and for what? Some pointless speculation that ultimately means nothing.

Posted by: booger at October 15, 2012 11:59 AM (HI6wa)

489 So, the point is that he's lost Ohio?  I thought the election was November 6.  Do you have a crystal ball, or the Oracle of Delphi stashed away in your man cave?  This is a depressing, pointless article that does nothing but demotivate those on the right who read this blog.  You should be doing just the opposite of this.

490 Only a handfull of BO signs along the interstate . All the back roads have multiple sins for R & R. That said I live in SW Ohio and don't know what is going on with the folks up north. They bussed a lot in there in 2008.

I wish this election was about splitting up the States to form two new countries. Whoever your state voted for would decide which country you would belong to.

I bet those Union workers in Ohio would not vote to join a new country that hates the military and big business.  The government would be their new employer.

Of course they would realize that since they wouldn't have the Conservative business owners ,taxpayers and consumers to support the fuck ups of their union system, they would soon see their beloved present day unions dissovled by a leftist government.

"480 They've stopped polling there [FL, NC, VA] because he has them."

One guy made headlines for doing so, but I've heard other polls, for example, that say FL is within 1%.  The question is, does anybody have any supporting evidence for whether that guy knows what the hell he's talking about [crosses fingers]?  We really need FL.  There are other ways, if NC or VA are lost, if we pick up OH and/or PA.

494 If conservatives started engaging in voter fraud, the problem would be fixed overnight.

Imagine busloads of coal miners going precinct to precinct casting ballots or people trying to vote twice, registering people in the household that don't live there, trying to cast both an absentee ballot, vote early, etc.  If Republicans "pushed the envelope" there would be real bipartisan voter fraud reform in all 50 states, but as long as it continues to benefit Democrats, they're never going to do what's right for the sanctity of democracy.

I'm not saying it's right, but every election we go through this and every time it's swept under the rug.

For the record, I think we'll overcome these issues in Ohio, the fact that Obama barely won the state in 2008 doesn't speak well for his chances, especially since they now have a Voter ID law on the books and nearly 500k ineligible voters have been thrown off.  But could I see a scenario where Romney comfortably wins the popular vote but loses because of shennanigans in Ohio?  Yes.

Sounds very reassuring!  Except that last part, of course.

The Dems crack me up on their sanctimonious Voter ID crap.  They claim to be the defenders of minorities, but what they're literally doing is saying "blacks and other minorities are either too lazy or too incompetent to get a voter ID".  It does not speak well for those demographic sectors that they put up with being talked about that way.  If they had any self-respect, they'd kick somebody's ass for that.

It's really about milking the fraud, but they love to call themselves virtuous when they're committing their fascism.

499 I guess Ace just isn't happy unless he's found something, anything to worry about. This election WILL NOT BE CLOSE. Fuck "private data", the PUBLIC data shows Romney ahead. If you want something to worry about, worry about massive election fraud. That is Obama's only chance and I wouldn't put it past him.

503 I live in Southwest Ohio.  It is a very conservative area but in 2008 I saw Obama bumper stickers and yard signs everywhere.  Thisseason they're rare as hens teeth.  Romney is taking Ohio.  You can go to the bank on that.

504 Anecdotal evidence that CO is back in the RED column:

Here in Colorado, I've noticed the Obama yard signs are disappearing, and the bumper stickers are becoming few and far between. Meanwhile Romney BANNERS (10 ft. '+) are being seen more and more. This is in the suburban areas. Out in the rural parts of the state, the is Zero support for TFG.
Boulder and Denver will not carry the day for the SCOAMT.

505 Hey, I posted in the most recent thread that as long as Mitt wins CO, FL, NC, VA, if he loses OH he can win either by
1) WI and NH,

or

2) NV and IA.

These are the 2 other possible pathways. [or WI + NV] He does not need NH if he loses Ohio, or even 1 from Maine.

Losing OH gives Mitt a 23.7% chance of winning election according to 538.com, assuming he wins states noted above. If he wins Ohio and Colorado though, SCOAMF will be getting swept out the door.

506 "The Dems crack me up on their sanctimonious Voter ID crap. They claim to be the defenders of minorities, but what they're literally doing is saying 'blacks and other minorities are either too lazy or too incompetent to get a voter ID.'" The media participates in the Dem GOTV effort. Cuyahoga Co. has the largest OBAMAPHONE black population in the country. By trumpeting rumors that Republicans want to prevent blacks from voting for their president, voters who would be demoralized or apathetic are energized. Suddenly, they see a common cause and the election is not about the economy or the promises Obama failed to deliver on, but it's a civil rights issue where racist Republicans have tried to humiliate him and jeopardized the nation. I cannot tell you how much I loathe this divisive POS in the White House. But I came across this: Buoyed by Romney’s clear victory over Obama during their first debate in Denver earlier this month, Frost said people in suburban Cleveland, in Catholic communities like Parma — where Obama and McCain broke even — are passionate for Romney and reject Obama’s policies on energy, taxes and the economy. Republicans say an improved ground game from 2008 and growing support for the Romney-Ryan ticket will translate into enough votes from northeastern Ohio to push Romney over the top statewide. “Our goal, you can look on election night, if you see a quarter of a million (GOP) votes coming out of Cuyahoga County, Mitt Romney has won the state,” Frost said. “I’ll give you one benchmark you can look for: If it’s 225,000, Romney should be OK; if it’s under 200,000, he’s probably in trouble. “We set an aggressive goal because we want to deliver more votes than any other county.”
