Romney's Victory Speech In Illinois
— Ace

I think Laura Ingraham remarked this was his best speech yet.

For some time I've intended to note that Romney has to speak thematically more. He has to connect policy ideas to grander, deeper themes.

He does a bit of that here.

My other suggestion (which he doesn't do) is that he he has to improve tonally. Look, conservatives are angry. They want to see a candidate show some of that anger. Not just to validate their own emotional state, but also to convince them that the candidate "gets it" where it counts, in the gut.

I know Romney does not want to appear angry and believes, with a fair amount of history to back him, that Angry Candidates do not win, and Happy Warriors do.

That's true, but there is a usefulness to anger.

I have suggested, and I will re-suggest, that Romney give a speech in which he treats the nation, and Obama, as if it is a failing company (and its parvenu CEO) he's been hired to right as a consultant.

Examine each and every failure and channel some emotion over the waste of capital and the waste of precious human resources. And keep saying, "This is unacceptable!," or a similar word. Something with some bite.

I know Romney does not believe in displays of emotion but let me suggest to him his business career should have taught him: The customers are always right. And, in this case, I think they're on to something.

You cannot ask a country to boot out the current occupant of the Oval Office if his performance is merely worth some tut-tutting and laugh lines. To justify such a large change, the CEO of America, Inc. has to be guilty of real incompetence and malfeasance.

And incompetence and malfeasance are worth getting hot about.

It really would help, not hurt, Romney if he backed his intellectual level claims with emotional level conviction. If Obama really has failed so badly the country needs a course correction -- how come we don't hear that in your voice?

His actual speech is decent. Needs work. He needs to improve if he's going to really win the primary, as opposed to gimping over the finish line, spent. And he'll need to improve to defeat a sitting president.

He should give a tough anti-Obama speech on a subject that everyone can kind of agree on.

Perhaps Fast and Furious, the continued funding of UNESCO even after the recognized Palestine, our current spending, Solyndra and other failed investments, or gas prices.

There are other topics, but these would be a good way of appearing to appeal to the right, while actually appealing to most Americans. He could attack Obama, not on a personal level, but on a policy level.

Romney's problem isn't style, it's substance. He himself admitted that he was a "prgoressive Republican". He admitted he didn't really like Reagan, or even the first Bush. He is not a conservative, his family is not conservative, and he doesn't have a conservative bone in his body. He is personally responsible for the abomination known as Obamacare.

His entire campaign is based on massive spending and lying about his record. In the general election, Romney won't have a massive spending advantage, and the MFM will constantly be pointing out his lies.

Delusions aside, I hope Ace will actually attempt to make a positive case for Romney sometime before he loses in November. I'd be very interested to read it.

40 We don't want "angry". Did Reagan ever do "angry"? Even when he called to "tear down this wall"? No, it was DETERMINATION, forcefully communicated, but not ANGER. Anger turns people off, unless it's in the context of some imminent threat. Most folks don't see political discussions in that light. That said, Romney certainly COULD be more forceful and determined than he is now. A lot less of the "he's a nice guy, but . . . " and a lot more of "he's led us down the wrong path, and we're better than that".

46 That's true, but there is a usefulness to anger.[i/]

Using anger, or at least faking anger, is one of the best tools a speaker has for engaging an audience.  If you have to have good judgment about when it will work.  When I'm working with a jury its one of my best tricks.

Mittens seems to be scared shitless that he might offend someone.  He needs to get over that.  Given what the SCoaMF has done to this country, anger is in order and will resonate with most people who aren't kool-aid drinking leftards.

Alas, I see to much Juan McCain in Romney for this to happen.

62 John McCain did use anger to his benefit when he said "I am not George Bush, if you wanted to run against George Bush you should have done it four years ago [2004]". Problem was that it was too late for that.

Also, most of us here on the Right-o-sphere knew it was codswallop. If anything, it was Bush who absorbed McCain's 2000 platform.

86 AllenG writes: "57 I don't know that he needs to be "angry," in the most common sense of the word. Perhaps "righteously indignant" might be a better term- though they're really saying the same thing." I don't think it is the same thing. Read what Maddog writes. I'm not at all saying his anger isn't justified, but it IS spittle-at-the-mouth rage. And I totally get that. Really, I do. But unless you're one of the people who ALREADY get that, seeing someone spitting mad isn't going to convince you to vote for them, it's going to make you wonder if they're unstable. Because YOU'RE not spitting mad, by definition--or you'd already be in the Maddog camp, right? Clearly, Romney needs to put more power into his statements, to convey that they really DO matter, that they affect the very vitality of the nation and the American experiment (clearly still going on), and that he will FIGHT for the win. He has not done enough of that, and I think some of the Maddog type demands for more anger are a reflection of that. But we want the public to the non-Obama to be offering a reasoned, not fanatical, solution to the Obama problem. Americans are not, and never have been, comfortable with fanatics. They got conned into the current one.

87 Just in case you forgot that Santorum is a radical, the Washington Post tells us:

"By [2007], Santorum had come to embrace a version of Catholicism far removed from the one he knew in the early 1970s, when church rituals were relaxing, when Catholic kids were being taught to see moral complexity, and when Santorum, a young teenager then, developed a rapport with a freewheeling Franciscan priest who spoke of Catholicism in terms of moral shades of gray."

Before I catch up with the comments...

I think Romney could win over some of us more reluctant supporters if he were to do that.  It's not just that we want him to identify some policy positions we would like, we'd also like somebody who simply "champions" our side!

I would argue that the case against the "angry" candidate is overplayed, precisely because Romney doesn't have the same history as some of those alleged too-angry guys: i.e. Goldwater, Nixon and to the extent  they were forced away from it, Dole and McCain.

An easy case could be made as to how each of those guys either won or lost, not because of voter perception of them being angry guys, but because of other more obvious factors.

Romney's problem right now is that he's demonstrated that he'll go after opponents in his party, so it would be a welcome sight to see him turn that on Obama and the Dems.

127 March 21, 2012 2:48pm 36 Comments WH: Ryan 'aggressively and deliberately ignorant' byJoel Gehrke Commentary Staff Writer Follow on Twitter: White House Press Secretary Jay Carney didn't pull any punches in his attack on Paul Ryan's budget, as he declared that supporters of the budget -- and by extension, Ryan himself -- are "aggressively and deliberately ignorant" about the need for green energy and other programs slated for cuts. "You have to be aggressively and deliberately ignorant of the world economy not to know and understand that clean energy technologies are going to play a huge role in the 21st century," Carney said after decrying the clean energy spending cuts in Ryan's plan. "You have to have severely diminished capacity to understand what drives economic growth in industrialized countries in this century if you do not understand that education is the key that unlocks the door to prosperity," he added. Carney concluded that "the budget proposed by Chairman Ryan and supported overwhelmingly already by Republicans suggests that those problems" -- aggressive ignorance and diminished comprehension -- "exist in the minds of the supporters of that plan." And now you misread what I wrote. I didn't say he needs a 'platform of anger' so don't bother with the strawman, sparky.

I said that he needs to show some emotion, show somehow that things are in bad shape and getting worse under the Obama administration. This is going to involve some righteous indignation (sound familiar?).

175 "More than half of them WERE the Hate Left."

And the Right wouldn't be able to reach that more-than-half-of-more-than-half (.52 squared is, what, 27%?) if we sent them all free hookers every Kwanzaa and Valtrex every spring. It wouldn't matter how angry Romney got or how nicely Scott Brown asked. They're lost to the Right.

This is how it works:
- turd sandwiches for us. Sorry, guys, we're voting Team Red whatever.  As long as the party and Romney don't go out of the way to insult us, like McCain did half the time, we at least can promise ourselves to brush our teeth after voting.
- dismiss the Left calmly, with the occasional reference to how unseemly their Free Stuff!1 addiction is. They're going to be taking their own sandwiches from their own candidates.
- don't scare the soccer moms with massive ugly fist-pumping displays.

Romney can do this.

179 I still claim the etch-a-sketch is going nowhere, it won't have legs. I offer a bet to you, AllenG, that the phrase won't get a single mention in any televised MSM news broadcast in the 14 days immediately preceding the election. Winner gets their choice of adult beverage (or winner's choice of substitute), at the losers expense, not to exceed $10.

It'd be a little hard for the winner to collect- since we don't actually know eachother.  And I'm not that sure of my own precognitive abilities.  That said- I don't think it would need to be "mention[ed] in any televised MSM news broadcast in the 14 days immediately preceding the election."  The damage could be done long before that.

Indeed, the problem with this- over and above John F'n Kerry's "I was for it before I was against it" is that Kerry's was "just" a flip-flop.  He'd held one position, then he changed his mind.  This is saying that Romney's team was lying to voters.  That the entirety of his campaign was "say whatever it takes in the Primary, and then run a completely different set of messages in the General."

Unlike Democrats, Republicans still don't like getting lied to.  If it gets any significant play in the beginning of the campaign, it will completely turn off any in the middle, or those less-tuned-in Republicans, and they'll never listen to him again.

202 Ranginess writes: "155 120, Reagan often displayed emotion. It was not over the top yelling or crying or anything like that. It was calm determination. He was a good actor. When he want to show passion or urgency or anything, he could convey it well. Romney is not a gifted orator. And he comes across as two dimensional. Reagan had good speeches, but the delivery was better than the words. Romney just doesn't have the gift." I think you hit it straight on. I was lucky enough to hear a Reagan speech in person, back in the mid-1980s when I was in college. It wasn't a speech on anything very important--probably some mid-term vote, I mostly recall him talking about the local polls. But he made is sound compelling, nevertheless. Can Romney do that? Apparently not. Can I do it. No. Can you do it (the "royal" you), mostly no. We can't hang our hat on that standard. Who is going to do the least damage to the Constitutional America most of us grew up loving? Romney or Obama? Sure, Romney might get suckered by the liberals now and then and do something stupid. But does ANYBODY believe he has America's demise as his goal? I think not. For Obama, it's his MISSION. Like rescuing the woman was the mission in Act of Valor, "fundamentally restructuring America" is Obama's mission, his goal in life, what will allow him, in his own mind, to live a fully complete and glorified life. It would be nice if we could bring back Reagan to fight him, but we can't. What we are going to have to fight him is Romney. For all the complaints I've heard for months from Conservatives complaining about Romney attacking other Republicans in the primary, it's remarkable that they can't help themselves from attacking Romney himself, when they're candidates are clearly lost. Yeah, that's how the founding fathers would have done things. Why, look at all the times they simply dug their heels in and refused to compromise, even though it meant losing a nation. Good thing they all drew a line in the sand and said, no more, I'd sooner lose the country than compromise with your sorry, non-Reagan ass. Oh, wait, they didn't refuse to compromise, did they. Even though many of them HATED each other, some to such a degree that the killed each other in duels. No, they didn't refuse to compromise, in the best long-term interests of the nation, because they weren't stupid.

More of looking into the futureÂ…

“Timing?  ThatÂ’s what made this Ace guy so big?” I was struggling to make conversation but also oddly curious at his admiration.

Rasmus cocked his head slightly and adjusted his top hat.  He had found the hat years before when a franchise chimney sweep company went bankrupt after fireplaces were outlawed due to global warming fears.  He seemed almost regal sitting there among the discarded condoms and Val-U-Rite bottles that littered what used to be the famous AoSHQ.

“People thought Mohammed Ali had timing, but that was nuthin compared to Ace” Rasmus reminisced. “I remember when he would keep ‘em waiting all morning, just to build the suspense, then BANG, six posts in a row.  It was a damn beautiful piece of work”.  Rasmus was just getting wound up, so I simply nodded in agreement.  “All the others paced their posts, but AceÂ… hell, he knew better.  Now, most of ‘em is down here with me while Ace is uptown with beautiful people.”

“All because he was independent with his timing and didnÂ’t follow the crowd?”  By now I was a bit skeptical.  “DidnÂ’t the writing, the cobloggers or anything else help him achieve his success?”

Rasmus smiled and gave a slight shake of his head in disbelief that anyone couldnÂ’t see the truth when laid out before them.  “Boy, all you need is timing.”

Both Reagan and Clinton "ran on" being aware of voter anger.  Both beat incumbent Presidents who seemed out of touch with said voters.

Not a coincidence.

Did Reagan display anger?  Sure, but he was nice about it.  Clinton however, went right at Bush Sr. jugular, and whether you want to credit him for it or not, Perot's campaign was pure anger at Bush.  Between them  he and Clinton garnered something like 62% of the vote.

217 This is going to be very interesting. Romney is not going to directly attack Obama's character and leave all of that to the SuperPACs. He is hoping to get the benefit of appearing moderate yet having all of the 'red meat' arguments out there. Obama is going to assail Romney's character in a direct way. They are going for the 'no core', and they are pretty confident it will stick. They are planning to hammer that narrative, and they are just waiting for Romney to come to the center in the general. It still looks about 60/40 to 50/50 to me. Romney's strategy could very well work, but it is going to be difficult. He is such an easy target, and I think the longer primary has made his strategy harder and Obama's easier.

244 AllenG writes: "Indeed, the problem with this- over and above John F'n Kerry's "I was for it before I was against it" is that Kerry's was "just" a flip-flop. He'd held one position, then he changed his mind. This is saying that Romney's team was lying to voters. That the entirety of his campaign was "say whatever it takes in the Primary, and then run a completely different set of messages in the General." I disagree, in large part because it was KERRY who made the statement you reference, but it was NOT Romney who made the etch-a-sketch statement. In any case, regarding the bet, of course we do not know each other personally. But I have no doubt, based on your posts, that you would make good if you lost, and I assure you I would do the same. If men of good spirit can not trust each other to even that degree, the cause is lost, no? Perhaps my constraints on the bet were too narrow, in limiting it to one week before the election. Do you have a counter proposal? Two weeks? Six weeks? Certainly, we heard the Kerry "I voted for it before I voted against it" all the way right up to the election, as I recall. If it hasn't come across, I'm a great admirer of your posts.

226.......If the MSM could pick our nominee, it would be someone like Bachmann, Newt or Santorum who could be relied upon to make frequent gaffes and stir up controversy by saying something stupid. Not a boring, white-bread, disciplined candidate like Romney.

All of the candidates have made 'gaffes', Hollowpoint. .....But Romney's gaffes are being stockpiled, and saved for when he becomes the nominee.

He is also the candidate who is the embodiment of the narrative that team Barky has worked the hardest to establish: "the evil rich 1%-ers".

I'm not saying that the MSM wouldn't have a field day with Santorum, Newt or Paul.....but Romney has enjoyed some noticeably favorable treatment, throughout the primary process.

275 Don't get the fuss over "etch-a-sketch".

Obviously, those who dislike Romney will seize on it to reassert the usual anti-Romney memes. In that sense it's an unfortunate metaphor.

But to me it just sounds like uncontroversial statement about the transition from a primary to a general campaign. Of course you're starting over, it's a new game: a new type of game (a two man game, a two party game), a new playing field (cleared of the previous players and the previous games' scorecards), a new opponent (who's now your only opponent), a new audience. It's a new chapter: and a new set of MSM narratives begin (which will require a corresponding set of counternarratives to counteract the MFM).

Of course in that sense things are "reset". The dominant themes and memes that came up in McCain vs. his 2008 primary opponents, or Obama vs. Hillary, faded away into irrelevance when the match was McCain vs. Obama.

Those who take the "reset" to mean a reset of policy and ideology and platform, are obviously choosing the most damaging interpretation to Romney. What a surprise. But to me the more plausible, obvious interpretation is: it's a reset in terms of political strategy and tactics. E.g. media strategy, TV appearances, speeches, interviews, tones and themes and memes and motifs. The general election involves a new (now the only) opponent-- Obama-- who will be launching the specifically anti-Romney Obama/ Dem/ MSM attacks and Obama 2012 WTF memes and narratives. Obviously Romney will have to tailor his defenses and offenses to fight a new team in a new game! What's controversial about that?

Those using this occasion to repeat the same tired "Romney's a liar/ panderer/ inauthentic/ " memes would seize any pretext to do so.

300 225, don't count on it.  We disagree on issue positions, but I'm a rational, reasonable person.  And I can see Romney's flaws.  But he's not entirely flawed.  The key to the election is how the American people feel about Obama.  Right now, more approve of his job performance than disapprove.  And the economy is improving slowly.  And Romney isn't the kind of guy who is going to turn a lot of people with  his charisma.  I think that points to an Obama reelection, but there are a lot of variables here.

Hillary as VP wonÂ’t win the election.  People just donÂ’t vote for VP.  It would be like McCain/Palin, in that no matter how popular she was, she just couldnÂ’t drag that piece of moderate dead meat over the finish line.

If Obama is the democrat candidate, he will lose in a landslide.  Every piece of historical data points to a Carter-like loss.  If Hillary is the candidate, it will be tight.

WeÂ’ll see after the republican convention.  TheyÂ’ll give the polling (the real polling, not the bullshit you see in the papers) a few weeks to settle and if Obama is trailing by 8 or 10 points, his ego will either let him continue or heÂ’ll take the money and run.

Yeah?

333 BurtTC writes: "I did. The point is, Romney has a reputation for going after opponents in his own party. What he doesn't have, is any indication he will do it to the Dems. He has run against them as well, and generally has fared poorly when he has. He needs to SHOW that he can go after Obama. Or lose. His choice." What campaign has he run poorly in? His Senate run against Kennedy? Who else dared run against Kennedy? Nobody! I'd say that shows guts. His run for President last time around? Who were all those other great Republican candidates who did better than him? McCain? Again, no Romney fan--Perry was my guy--but a lot of these shots against Romney are lame. He ran against Kennedy and lost, he ran for the Presidency in a historic Democrat-winning year, and lost (side-stepped by "it's my turn" McCain"). He ran for Governor, and won. I don't ever recall him running for re-election and losing by 18 points (Santorum). Or limiting his entire political career to non-executive positions that never demand one be the person who makes THE decision (Gingrich and Paul). Shees, even with Obama as the opponent, some alleged Republicans will still sh*t all over our nominee. Great, guys, that'll move things forward.

Of course, the SCOAMF will still get 41-42% of the vote from his core. That isn't going to be enough this time. He has lost a hell of a lot more support than you even realize. Where has he gained? 370 Granted, Reagan did his service time in Hollywood making movies (and credit to him). Is that what you had in mind in terms of "military service"? Reagan was a great leader despite never having been in mind of an enemy's bullet (until the left tried to assassinate him, of course). Military service provides a definite presumption of faith to country. Lack of military service does NOT do the opposite. Lots of us couldn't do military service, it doesn't mean we don't love our country. And, by the way, it's not like 0.0% of veterans voted for Obama.

"We need a candidate who shows he gets it. Like Perry."

The more sure it becomes that there will be a brokered convention, the more posts like this one will come to fruition.  A brokered convention if romney "fails to get a thousand" as per newt today on hannity, gives the republican party an opportunity to re coup, to re assess to have a conversation with the nation, rather than just die which it surely will if romney gets the nomination and loses, which is a distinct possibility as BO is the sitting president and romney has all the charisma of well, an etch a sketch.  Romney also likes the president, has said more than once that BO is a nice guy and as the father of obamacare, they share the obamnycare bond.  Romney can spend his fortune devastating the republican field for his friend, BO and then, at the last minute, endorse BO, in a similar way that mcshame endorsed him.  What could the republicans do?  It would be over for them again.  But, this time, the republican party would take more of a hit, the idea of a third party with new blood and new faces would become a reality.

Thosd pushing the meme of santorum wanting to control your sex life instead of realizing that Santorum sees the destruction of the family, are hurting the country to position their guy mittens.  Those pushing the meme that women would never vote for newt and that he's got crazy ideas and can't win, are hurting the nation.  Yes, Ron Paul has some off the wall foreign policy ideas, but some sound dollar ideas, but you all go ahead and poison the water for him and the rest to make sure you position your boy romney, cause in your small minds he's the only electable one.  Hope it doesn't come back and bite you in the butt.  Although, the way most of you behave, unthinking, I'll be laughing while you gnash your teeth and cry your crocodile tears.

382 Oh and for the person who thought that saying I had a child out of wedlock or some such nonsense and they thought it was a horrible insult, sure showed your true colors....judgmental bigot ...I got it right, didn't I?

why not have a look at bristol's blog post, it's good, it's very good, to the point actually:  "Mr. President, When Should I Expect Your Call?"  http://tinyurl.com/6m4zvu3

383 I liked the speech. The only problem I have is that it was given by Ned Flanders. I want Patton! I want him to be as pissed off as me. Everything you said is correct, Ace.
