Rubio Abandons Support for SOPA
— Ace

As Wikipedia and other sites go dark (and I join them in protest, by going late), Rubio retracts his support of the measure.

Eh, good. I don't even follow the issue but I like this strange new innovation that citizen input plays some role in democratic processes. Let's give this a spin, see how it plays out.

1 I blame the SOPA protests. Our navigation screens went black early in solidarity. Luckily I left my Garmin in the bar and I found it, but it fell into a lifeboat by accident. So we're good, si?

2 Jeez, I didn't even realize he was a co-sponsor of the bill in the Senate in the first place.  Bad move, Marco.

Yuk it up, but how come we have sooo many willing to start from the more oppressive solution  ...and this from a good guy.  Enough. Is. Enough.

GOOD.  Good Rubio.  Way to actually pay attention to the will of the electorate.  If you wouldnt mind passing that bit of advice on to your fellow Senators and House Representatives, I'd be grateful.

Now don't do it again, or we're sending the Ewok to fuck your garbage some more.

21 Of course we blasted Santorum for voting the way his district wanted with Right to Work.  Either way, glad to see Rubio come around.  Having a co-sponsor fall off, one who is named Rubio, will hopefully doom this.  I don't even know much about the bill.  I just know that the federal government usually makes things worse, not better.  So my default position is to not want the federal government to do anything about a problem.

26 Rubio is no longer a cosponsor of PIPA. Also, Rep. Benjamin Quayle, who is on the House Judiciary Committee, withdrew his support for SOPA yesterday.

29 Can someone tell me who is in favor of this?

My lib/dem, last election uber obama supporter friend (has been very quiet this election cycle so far) sent each of their friends an email this morning with a phone number that you could click on and it would lead you to some woman at their representatives office.  Said friend instructed you to say "please tell congressman/senator so and so that I am completely against SOPA/PIPA and I will surely remember his/her vote on this issue in the future"....

kid you not.  So who wants this if everyone seems to be against it?

35 Chris Christie was on morning joe today.  Oh, seeing him so early in the morning made my day, I just love that guy.

Anyway, I keep seeing reports about his tax plan and the MSM seems to leave out the fact that he has earned income credits for the very poor which gives them money back.

On another note, my friend who is looking for a house in Rockland county (cause that is what they can afford) heard both Andy's ideas and christie's ideas and they decided to look in Jersey now (cause of the tax benefits).

And they reasoned they won't be alone as "up there it's easy to jump over to New Jersey and they imagined the uber wealthy just might do that to get Andy's mitts off of their hard earned cash.

39 Did the facepalm after learning BOTH my senators -- BOTH R's -- were co-sponsors of PIPA. Just sent e-mails telling 'em to cut that crap out. Can't take my eyes of either of 'em for a minute... (Isakson says it's OK because PIPA only goes after 'foreign' websites. Sure...)

40 When I wrote Patty Murray, I used Kathy Shaidle's line, telling her she's not smart enough to tell me how to live or to run the internet.  It's hardly news though.

Posted by: Tonestaple at January 18, 2012 09:53 AM (V+wqJ)

41 Can someone tell me who is in favor of this?

Hollywood, mostly.  Political-wise Lamar Smith is the big cheese behind SOPA in the House, and Al Franken's driving PIPA in the Senate.  Hollywood's hired Chris "Waitress Sandwich" Dodd to lobby for it, which tells you all you need to know.

Posted by: Ian S. at January 18, 2012 09:56 AM (tqwMN)

42

And Maria Cantwell says she favors the goals of PIPA but not the means.  She's touting and sponsoring something called the OPEN Act, S 2029, which doesn't sound a whole hell of a lot better:

"The OPEN Act recognizes that the Internet has created new opportunities for foreign products to reach the U.S. market and that there is little difference between downloading a pirated movie from a foreign website and importing a counterfeit movie DVD from a foreign company. For those foreign web sites that are determined after an investigation to be primarily and willfully infringing, the International Trade Commission will issue a "Cease and Desist" order. The "Cease and Desist" order may also be served on financial intermediaries that provide services to that foreign web site, compelling financial payment processors and online advertising providers to cease doing business with the foreign site in question.  This would cut off financial incentives for this illegal activity and deter these unfair imports from reaching the U.S. market.

43 Rubio Abandons Support for SOPA

This, and Ace gets a warm-fuzzy feeling when ever Rubio is around.

Can we haz him for preznit now?

Red State did a whole e-mail/phone campaign to Rubio's office on this. Glad to see he takes his constituants advice seriously. Often times I always suspect pols don't know enough about a particular subject or legislature to vote responsibly, the new interweb thingy has worked wonders.

No one can read that. It's intentionally obscure. They go by what their staff or their colleagues tell them about the bill, and/or what they are liable to get for supporting it.

At least by ObamaCare supporters' logic.

Posted by: Anony at January 18, 2012 11:53 AM (Yigvc)

49 Fucking SOPA. Seriously? Has anyone actually read it? If the DOJ suspects a website of violating copyright laws...which by the way is a Constitutional duty of the USG, to protect interstate and international trade...they can get a court order to shut you down, and you get a trial. It's a non-issue fer fucksakes, it's not like they're busting your door in on a no-knock warrant served up at midnight over some potted Japanese maple trees or something.
Honest to god, some of the people on "my" side need to take the f'n anti-government blinders off once in a while. There are some things the USG is SUPPOSED to do, and interstate/international trade is one of those things.

50 Rubio seems a little indecisive and irresolute by changing his mind on this. I sure hope that this is not an independent streak that we are seeing in him.
