Rubio's Statement on Obama's Power Grab
— Ace

Not a fan.

There is broad support for the idea that we should figure out a way to help kids who are undocumented through no fault of their own, but there is also broad consensus that it should be done in a way that does not encourage illegal immigration in the future. This is a difficult balance to strike, one that this new policy, imposed by executive order, will make harder to achieve in the long run.

TodayÂ’s announcement will be welcome news for many of these kids desperate for an answer, but it is a short term answer to a long term problem. And by once again ignoring the Constitution and going around Congress, this short term policy will make it harder to find a balanced and responsible long term one.

On Brett Baier, Stephen Hayes advanced these facts: Rubio's about to release a book next week and will be all over the media, and Rubio's been working with Congressmen on some sort of a measure to deal with the children of illegals. Further, Obama has actually instructed his party to not deal with Rubio on the matter.

His conclusion is that Obama did this for fear that Rubio could actually put together some kind of a deal, and he couldn't have that.

So he violated his oath to defend the Constitution. Same shit, different day.

1) Obama needs to dangle amnesty in order to get Hispanic turnout.  He doesn't actually want it before the election.
2) It's possible that there are a number of Dems threatening to jump on whatever reform the Republicans push through in order to protect themselves.  Especially Dems representing blue collar voters that Obama seems to have abandoned.

Posted by: someguy at June 15, 2012 03:22 PM (sEXZ/)

28 Rubio really needed to take a hard line against this usurpation. Any *good* that it arguably does for any party is completely irrelevant to the damage it does to a free society governed by law. Rubio needs to use tougher words in decrying the Presidents action here; I know impeachment is off the table, but common get tough.

And though trampling on the Constitution impeachment remains off the table because the American people will not make Senators pay with their job for failing to support impeachment. It comes down to the fact that there are too few Americans left who would hold a left of center politician accountable to the rule of law, so left of center pols no longer have to respect the law.

For those on the far left, whatever ends are necessary including flagrantly disregarding the Constitution, is okay, as a matter of fact encouraged.

For those in the middle, they don't support anything that looks too "extreme". So they will sit by as the country is destroyed by a tyrant completely disregarding the limits placed on him by the law of the land. Because they just want to believe that things are always going to be OK so long as no one upsets the apple cart; And bold action is NEVER necessary to solve a problem, just calm slow caving to whatever the left wants.

That leaves only us on the right. Far from what is needed to compel action in a legislature sympathetic to the President.

The problem again is the will of the American people being so close to lost that we are ripe for rule by a tyrant.

I got that, but I think there's something else here.  Obama is pandering, sure, but he's also realized that he will lose unless he makes Romney make mistakes.  That's what this is about.

Romney had the right response.  The condemned the action as illegal and he will not let IT stand.  Obama wants to make it about individuals so he can pull at the heartstrings of the LI voters.  It won't work. Romney won't let Obama call the tune for him.

That's stupid.  Money is physical property that belongs to someone else.  Amnesty doesn't take citizenship away from someone else, and no one is entitled to a job.

When you are a parent, and you do something illegal, it not only affects you, it affects your children as well.

43 You folks out in Texas have a rep that isn't afraid to stand up. Last week, he spoke up about SWATting, today, Obama:

Dear Friends,

The Obama Administration announced today it will stop deporting illegal immigrants who are currently under the age of 30 and came to the United States as children, and will instead grant them work permits. The decision by President Obama to circumvent Congress and the legislative process to implement amnesty by administrative fiat is appalling. Rather than work with Congress to pass common-sense border security enhancement and immigration reform, the President has reverted to political pandering to pacify his base. This decision is short-sighted, reckless, and unnecessarily confrontational. Furthermore, this decision will likely have significant repercussions for Americans and legal immigrants looking for work, as this order makes approximately 800,000 illegal immigrants eligible to apply for work authorization.

Defending our nationÂ’s homeland is of the upmost importance and it ought not to be tainted by administrative decrees that make a mockery of the rule of law. I will work with my House colleagues to fully investigate the PresidentÂ’s decision and get answers regarding the national security implications as well as the massive fraud this action will invite into our immigration system.

I am honored to represent the 24th District of Texas, and I appreciate your interest in my e-newsletter.  Please contact my District or DC office with any further questions you may have or visit my website at marchant.house.gov

Sincerely,

Congressman Kenny Marchant

What was it exactly....that Rick Perry said, that got people's panties in a bunch?

"If you don't want to help these children of illegals, then...you don't have a heart."

Was that it?

It was something like that.

And it was a loser....politically, for him to say such a thing.

And it was over the policy of just giving children of illegals, the ability to pay the in-state price for tuition.

So, how is it a winning thing now, for Rubio to be bringing up an even more elaborate plan....to 'help the children of illegals'...?

From what Rubio has been saying about this....he wants to give them a long list of things, not just paying the in-state price for tuition.

*shakes head*

I don't get it.

50 "Constrained by Congress? Like today?" Today Congress cannot constrain Barack Obama, because the United States Senate is controlled by the Democrat Party. But after November 2012, the Congress will no longer be controlled by the Democrat Party. I would rather have Barack Obama in the White House, constrained by a Republican Congress, than to have Mitt Romney in the White House reaching across the aisle to continue Barack Obama's policies. It's clear that Romney will NOT reverse this amnesty, and that he doesn't really care about working Americans (obviously, he's out of touch because he's so rich). If he is unable to commit to reversing this policy, which is wrong on at least 3 different levels, including Constitutionally, then why should I vote for him? Romney has NOT SAID that he would reverse this amnesty. I am left to conclude that he would not and supports the amnesty. That Mitt Romney believes as Barack Obama believes that hard-working Americans - 23 million of them - are to be placed BEHIND the millions of illegal aliens who were given permission today to seek jobs in the United States. If the Republican Party cannot bring itself to side with hard-working, taxpaying Americans who are fucking desperate for work in this country then I for one have no further use of this political party and will work to eliminate it from within in favor of Tea Party candidates who actually possess backbones and principles.

83 The real reason illegals get carte blanche while legals get red tape is that it's really about importing an underclass. 86 Alex, amnesty does take citizenship away from the people who are in line, waiting to obtain legal citizenship. No, I don't believe we need to punish the children because their parents did something illegal. If the family is here illegally, they all need to leave. They can consider their children's education, and other benefits as a parting gift. The children should not be rewarded because their parents brought them here illegally. Children that were born in the U.S. to illegal parents are another matter. Let them stay with a foster family, but the parents are breaking the law and need to be deported.

My second comment of the morning was exactly the Stephen Hayes point.  The Democrats regard the Hispanic vote as theirs.  This was a desperate maneuver to stay ahead of the GOP.

I'm not going to disparage Rubio on this.  It's a real problem and it needs a real answer and there's a lot of voters who will not put up with a solution that sounds like it's going to have the kids marched out of some fourth-grade classroom in Fresno onto buses headed for the border.

I don't care about buzzwords.  I'm tired of the guys on our side deciding that Step 9 needs to be Step 1.  And that is what Rubio did a few weeks back with his pimping of a DREAM Act.  It should not even be on our radar because of everything else about illegal immigration that should be handled first.  So fuck Rubio for this bullshit.  And fuck Romney for backing it too.

And I'm still voting for him just because I know there is at least a chance we can tell them to sit down and shut up with their pandering to criminals and there's no chance of that happening with Obama.  But don't expect me to act like I'm happy about the crap they're saying just because Obama is much much worse on it.

Okay." Further ... Here's what Mitt Romney has to say to get my vote: * Barack Obama today put illegal aliens ahead of real American job hunters. And that's wrong. It's one thing to decide not to deport these kids. It's quite another thing to hand them job cards when American kids cannot find jobs. * Barack Obama defied the will of the people of the United States - as expressed through their Congressional appointees - in imposing this amnesty in defiance of the will of the people. * 23 million Americans cannot today find the full-time job they need to keep their homes, to feed their children, and to live out the American Dream. Until such time as those people can find those jobs, then we should not be granting work permits to low-wage imported labor from Mexico. * The President of the United States is not a king. He is not a Dictator. The President of the United States is required to enforce our laws until such time as he can marshal the political support to change those laws. * Imposing these sorts of mandates by Presidential Degree is wrong ... it is unconstitutional ... and I will rescind this executive order if you will elect me to be the President. If Mitt Romney cannot say these things, then I have no reason to vote for him. I won't vote for Obama Lite.

Posted by: someguy at June 15, 2012 03:54 PM (sEXZ/)

114 Further, even IF Romney wins, and even IF the GOP takes the Senate, the odds they'll get 60 seats in support of enhanced immigration enforcement are vanishingly thin.  Even if you got a filibuster-proof majority of 'Pub senators you're going to lose some of those who get ag money when it comes to immigration.

If there's going to be immigration law changes - say, employer verification, taking money away from states and localities with 'sanctuary' ordinances or otherwise resist enforcement, etc - you're going to need some Democrats.  And you're going to need to throw a few of 'em a bone.  And you could do far worse than Rubio in figuring that out.

119 Remittances are Mexico's second largest source of foreign exchange. Exactly. They've farmed out their underclass to the US, both those here and those back in Mexico supported by them. Mexico is relieved of the burden of their poverty, leaving their ruling class richer and more powerful and their society under less pressure to reform. So it continues, corrupt and backward, enriched by oil wealth and unburdened of an underclass it refuses to deal with.

"At the same time that unskilled workers are able to come here illegally, we do not grant enough visas to high-skill job creators and innovators seeking to come here legally. The system requires us to send away the great majority of the over 300,000 foreign students who are earning advanced degrees at U.S. universities. And it is too difficult for businesses to secure visas for foreign workers to make up for labor shortages and gaps in skills."

Above lies brought to you by the visa brokers who capitalize on visa fraud who donated HUGE amounts to Romney.

When real unemployment drops back below 6 % , we start talking about more visas.

Mitt Romney opposes all “magnets” that entice illegal immigrants to come to our country illegally and stay here. He will establish a tamper-proof employment verification system like E-Verify that will enable employers to hire only those legally permitted to work and deny jobs to those here illegally. This will turn off the jobs magnet that attracts so many unskilled workers to cross the border illegally or overstay their visas.

Mitt also opposes all other magnets. As governor, he vetoed in-state tuition benefits for illegal immigrants and opposed driverÂ’s licenses for illegal immigrants.

Mitt Romney believes in the rule of law and will fully enforce federal immigration law. As governor, he authorized state police to assist the federal government in immigration enforcement.

196 I agree with mama winger: it's smart, prudent of Romney to cool it, not let himself to pressured to precipitately or definitively give an extended comment on something that just happened, that hasn't been fully digested by him or anyone else. Right now, Obama should be on the hot seat over this, not Romney. Also, in politics, as they say, timing is everything. News cycle-wise too. Let Romney choose the time and place, occasion and context in which to address this. We have an election to win here, folks. Can't go off half-cocked.

It's been one of the Romney campaign's guiding rules from the start not to let itself get flustered, redirected or "distracted" by any of the many stunts Obama has pulled and will pull in the future. Like gay marriage, and this. That's falling for the Obama/ MSM trap. That's letting Obama define the MSM conversation, letting Obama sic the MSM on Romney, to interrogate Romney instead of Obama over something *Obama* has just done. Romney handled the gay marriage thing calmly and deftly, and it didn't get him offtrack his message or campaign discipline. I'd expect the same in this case too.

After all, Obama did this *now* to distract from the big fat fail of yesterday's supposedly "reframing" speech on the economy and jobs, which is what Romney wants the election to focus on and Obama does not.

"Just out of curiosity, are you THE someguy?"

I was going to ask the same thing-- someguy of "punching down" fame? That was an amusing/ annoying AOSHQ troll-baiting diversion.

Why would you want a fake card if you already got a fake birth certificate?  Most immigrant parents are good providers and ensure that their kids have as many birth certificates as they need.

Do you, like, go down to the SS office and stand in the three-block line to get a card?  Is this the card you wave at the cop when he stops you for making an illegal right turn your car is full of dope smoke, and your pupils are blotting out your irises?

Who do you need to be to get the card?  If you are a Republican, will they deny you?

'Cause it is not Feds that are doing all the possession or he's high arrests.  It is locals.  Town cops, state troopers, county deputies.

Will they honor my card?

The Rubio Plan? You people don't understand teh chess that Barack Obama is playing. Every time Republicans offer up some sort of compromise solution ... then Barack Obama implements that solution and continues working on his agenda. He gets some of what he wants and Republicans can't complain because ... after all ... they offered up the Rubio Plan. Then he's free to continue to chip away at his other demands. Stupid Republicans then offer up a new compromise plan dealing with the new demands, and Democrats implement that solution (taking only the parts they like). The first Rule Of Dumb Club is don't be fucking dumb.

238 @223

yes the costs have gone way up. The class of visa determines which agency( ies) handle the visa process, which in turn affects the price. DHS and State have increased filing fees , mostly due to the huge problems with visa fraud and the necessary efforts to combat it.

I know DHS expedited filing went from 1000 to about 1225 if that gives you any idea.

It is incredibly unfair to those who attempt to immigrate legally but the  potential pay off for running a successful visa scam is irresistible to those who would abuse the people and the system .

Legal immigrants are frequently FAR WORSE off than illegals. Sad but true.

266 That sonofabitch...

Friend --

Thanks to our president, this nation's immigration policy just became more fair and more just.

Effective immediately, the Department of Homeland Security is taking steps to ensure that young, undocumented immigrants who were brought here as children by their parents, and who have followed the law since then, will be able to request temporary relief from deportation proceedings -- and will be allowed to apply for authorization to work in this country.

They're a group that we've come to call the "Dreamers" -- and today, the country they love is telling them they should be able to dream as big as they want.

For years, the President has called on Congress to make common-sense fixes to our broken immigration system. They haven't. So he did.

I am so proud to stand with President Obama on this decision. Watch what he had to say today -- then join me by getting his back.

The hundreds of thousands of people who this policy might help are people who call the United States of America home. They study in our schools, play in our parks, and pledge allegiance to our flag. Some of them have served in our Armed Forces. They've started businesses; they've started families. They are Americans in every way but on paper.

Congress still has time to pass the DREAM Act. And if they do, policies like today's will no longer be necessary.

We are not giving up on this issue.

Stand up and support the President today -- and help send the message that this first big step must be followed by a real, permanent solution from Congress:

Thank you,

Katherine

National Political Director
Obama for America

278 CPU pins are delicate.  Generally you can't mis-align the chip because of shape, but you can easily bend pins.  Just recheck it.

It will have a clamping bar you pull up to release the chip, and use to tighten down when re-installed.

Dealing with visa brokers/attorneys are the wild wild west. You just don't know what you are going to get. More immigration regulation "fixes " just lead to more visa fraud and human trafficking loopholes.

I have seen people, truly the best and brightest, lose life savings attempting to "do it right" and seen others, including felons, live high on the hog as a non tax paying illegal.

That is what is SO offensive about amnesty. It rewards thieves and punishes law abiding citizens.

I hate the thought of EO as an immigration fix.

Most presidents...hell most Americans DO NOT know the difference between immigrants and nonimmigrants

The best way to stop the bleeding would be to link the number of non immigrant visas to the unemplyment rate.

Unfortunately, the visa fraudsters would scream to their Congressmen about "crops dying in the field" and that would end quickly .

I believe that what we are seeing here is the effect, the root cause is Mexico's unwillingness or inability to work to inprove their citizen's living standards.  Unless that happens, the problem obviously will worsen.

We are a nation of immigrants.

NOT a nation of non immigrants. There is a huge difference which no one really discusses.

Immigrants strengthen our country.

Non immigrant visas outsource jobs to foreign workers which weakens our economy and encourages unemployment insurance abuse and fraud.

“I am for doing good to the poor, but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.”

370 This is ridiculous. While I really really do NOT support the separation of children from their parents during a deportation, I can not support granting work visas and tax payer funded government student loans to people that are NOT citizens. Sorry, but there should be some advantages to being a citizen. Period. How can Obama possibly think that this is a good idea when the unemployment and underemployment rate is through the roof in this country? Sure, he can pander to the Hispanic vote all he wants, but the truth is, they are having trouble getting jobs, too. Where is the impetus to come to the U.S.? There are no jobs, and many unskilled labour jobs are going to older workers that have been booted out of their jobs due to union reshuffling deals or good old fashioned age discrimination. So you mean to tell me that my Aunt Phyllis will have to now complete with an 18 year old non-citizen when it comes to securing that job at Walgreens? Give me a break. Screw this crap. If the Republicans didn't cater to the unscrupulous businesses that simply want the cheapest labour possible, and if the Democrats weren't pandering to the Hispanic vote, then perhaps we would be enforcing immigration laws that are already on the books. We have allowed this whole mess to happen in the first place, and if any one there reading this is employing an illegal immigrant, you are part of the problem. If you aren't willing to put your selfish money where your mouth is and SPONSOR this person for citizenship, then you are nothing more then an exploitative asshole. When your worker gets deported and his kids get sent to another country, or worse, put into foster care, it's YOUR fault!

382 Ok, at the moment the illegal thing is one serious, monster problem. In this economy, for example, is there really a job an American won't do? That I seriously doubt. However in many cases it's cheaper to hire illegals because of the minimum wage BS, the fact that you don't have to pay benefits or deal with all the government regulation involved with hiring citizens, etc. Ok, so you want to fix the illegal problem? Well it's going to require steps that aren't going to be fun or in many sectors popular. Step 1: Stop fucking around, and secure the border. The US Military should be deployed to do exactly that - because that is what the military is supposed to do, protect our border. We need to stop fucking around, build a big ass wall and patrol the thing. Step 2: Choke off the paychecks. Forget this mamby pamby bullshit. Make it abudantly clear to employers that if you get caught hiring and paying illegals under the table, you will get fined and/or imprisoned. Second offense, automatic jail time. If the illegals here can't make money, they will go home of their own accord. It's the only way it will happen. Step 3: Abolish the Minimum Wage. Ok, this one will take some time to sort itself out, but seriously one of the reason there is a market for illegals isn't because they do jobs American's won't, the fact is they can do those jobs cheaper because the government currently sets a minimum that an American can work for - and such minimums don't help American workers. They help illegals. Step 4: Establish a serious path to legalization - only available to those that start from and apply from Mexico. If your already here, fuck you. Go home and start over. But we do need to seriously look at having a reasonable number of people who can either be guest workers or on a path to citizenship legally. Step 5: No more benefits for non citizens. Period. A federal law that prohibits any tax payer funded benefits, including education, etc, for non-citizens who are not here on some sort of legal visa. If your not legal, you don't get shit. Get your ass back to your own country and if you want to come back, do it the right way. A few other odds and ends, but those are the biggies. Not much else will work I'm afraid, were too far gone for half measures and touch feelly bullshit.

414 Earning citizenship through military service is honorable and has been around for a very long time.

The problem is that (almost) all changes in immigrant or non immigrant status requires leaving the US before adjusting status.

Legal immigrants MUST "self deport" sometimes for YEARS in order to get a permanent resident card.

Illegals don't.  They just hang around.

These were not terrorists who he gets to pronounce death upon they were citizens minding their own business in their own country. Obama should release the transcripts or release his AG!

418 The POTUS and his administration do NOT get to decide which laws they enforce and abide by and which they do not.
This is an unconstitutional distraction from the Fast and Furious debacle. President Obama should want to get to the bottom of why and how two  American Border Patrol Agents and Mexicans were murdered by the hundreds in their own country with guns his Justice Dept supplied to drug cartels
The Mexican and American people want answers and can't be bought off by cheap tricks and distractions.
Mr Obama should tell his AG to comply with congressional oversight or fire him.

The GOP needs to figure out the illegal alien issue.  Hispanics are already the largest minority.  When the GOP went all hardball about illegals and welfare in Calif a couple decades ago vis-a-vis Pete Wilson, the GOP lost California, for 50 years, maybe more.  And I agreed with Pete Wilson, a principled, dedicated conservative, and he took the right moral stand.  So maybe the GOP can do that nationally?  See where that is going?  We have a problem in that we DID not control our border, both under GOP and DEMS.  We said crossing and staying was illegal (wink-wink).

So we need to excercise the art of compromise here, that is what Rove was trying to do, since he is a political scientist, he knows demographics will eventually overwhelm message.  That is why Bush tried to do amnesty, because the GOP must win a significant portion of Hispanics or become a forgotten party reigning in a few states.  I don't particularly like the choices, but we better do something like nominate Rubio, just to split the Hispanic vote and to prep the GOP to have a viable Presidential candidate by 2020.  As you should know the Dems will push a woman next, or a combo of a Hispanic and a woman.

Or a midget tatooed lesbian...whatever is the cultural flavor of the month.  Get off the hard ideoligical demands...you will win few battles, but lose the war.

436 When he realizes it helps him politically, Pres. Obama will deport the parents of these self-identified illegals. They won't be hard to identify with the work permit documentation. Then the work permits can be rescinded and the "children" will have family waiting for them in the home country. Problem solved. Pres. Obama is supposed to be brilliant. Would anyone be surprised if he throws them under the bus. Who would trust him either way? And if he doesn't maybe a later President will. This approach is an ill-thought out mess, like most liberal efforts. Just pathetic. Romney is right to remain calm.

That's the one area where the dems seem to outright admit that they send people to argue the merits of whatever candidate they are touting.

I wonder if the romney camp will organize people to do the same all over the internet for their benefit?

Romney raised 5 sons and they seem pretty normal so he's probably a kewl dad. He's been married to the same woman for waaaay long and he didn't leave her when she got sick, that's kewl.   Problem is, in the age where sports stars are lionized and their baby mamas are paid by the franchise, the virtues that romney exudes aren't appreciated.

In a way, romney has to literally re educate the country.  Many believe he is the rich, detached, power hungry candidate.  Somehow he has to show them the dad, the husband, the business man, the governor, the mormon, and make them appreciate who he is and why.

In this 8 dimensional chess game....you have to say a lot, but give away little information.  The dems are saying romney has no plan cause they want him to get so frustrated he releases the plan so they can follow it.  Maybe it's just as simple as romney saying "Look, mr. president, I take exception to you and your side always saying I don't have a plan.  Of course I have a plan, in fact I have back up plans to my back up plans. it's in my genes, I'm a romney and a mormon after all.    But, I expect my plan to work so well that I don't want to share it with you right now as it's delicate and complicated and needs the right people in place for it to work.  I just want the American people to look at my record as governor and know I've got their back"...

maybe not quite that way, but something on that order.  Problem is, he can't look like he doesn't want to save the country while BO is in office and he has to parse every word and think what will their response be to this word or that word.    Politics has turned into a game of "micro minutia".

438 Posted by: pooh at June 16, 2012 09:44 AM (oZfic) Liberals are immune to arguments. It's all about appeals to emotion ("What about the CHILDREN?") Well that will leave a mark. Arms Merchant, you probably are not aware that "pooh" has identified herself as an independent - not a conservative - who frequents this thread God only knows why. Many who post here have their theories, but you'd have to go back and do a search on the many nics "pooh" has used since she first started commenting as "curious".
