Report: Racist Paul Ryan Sexually Exploited & Then Discarded African-American Girl In College
Noting a CNN report of a 2005 Ryan statement, the black blog The Root (I think it's a black blog; not really sure) ponders what this says about Paul Ryan, and concludes he's probably a racist anyway.
Certainly, having a relationship with someone of a different race does not automatically make someone more racially sensitive and enlightened. Throughout his lifetime, Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina financially and emotionally supported the daughter he fathered with an underage black servant. In addition to paying for her education, he was also known to play the part of proud parent by visiting her college campus and make inquiries to faculty about her educational progress.Yet at the same time he was doing this in private, he was publicly advancing policies that would have rendered his daughter's education virtually useless. If those policies had succeeded, she and her children, with whom he also maintained a relationship, would have remained second-class citizens. Does this mean that Thurmond's relationship with his daughter was not genuine? From her recollections regarding the lengths he went to in order to remain a part of her life, I doubt it.
So then, how could he genuinely care for his black daughter and promote policies that would harm African Americans, and therefore harm her? Research has shown that those who hold stereotypes about a particular group of people are unlikely to have those stereotypes altered merely by encountering someone who defies that stereotype. Instead, they are likely to view the individual defying said stereotype as an exception. In other words, it is possible to have a black friend, Asian friend, Hispanic friend or Muslim friend or wife and still exhibit prejudice toward that group. The friend or wife is simply viewed as the exception who is not like the others.
For the record: No, I am not calling Ryan a racist. I am saying, however, that if you want to know where a politician's heart lies when it comes to a particular community, it may be best to look at that person's policies -- such as his or her record on civil rights -- rather than personal relationships.
I stumbled across Stormfront weighing in on the "issue."

I had a roommate in college who was a Jew from NYC. He actually managed to reinforce some stereotypes about Jews. Until then, I had assumed that the stereotypes were complete crap. The funny part (I guess) was where he told me that there was a concern among the Jewish community regarding how the Jewish boys couldn't stand the Jewish girls, and weren't marrying them. At the time, there was a "Jewish-American princess" stereotype, and apparently the Jewish boys were big believers in it.
This guy would always carry on about how he wouldn't carry on about Jews as if they were anything special - during lengthy lectures about Jews. I didn't really have any interest in the subject, one way or the other, but as Sheldon would say on "Big Bang", lectures on the subject "weren't optional."
In another odd adventure, he drove across the state with my girlfriend to visit his girlfriend (who was studying to be a doctor near where my girlfriend lived). On the way, he managed to WEAR OUT THE HORN in her car! It was a few blocks to the interstate, which took you to a point that was a few blocks from the destination. How do you wear out a horn over 300 miles of rural THRUWAY!?! Who even USES a horn on the thruway? The future wife said she didn't know what it sounded like, before that trip.
So the guy was kind of an a-hole, but still a nice guy, in an odd sort of way.

I began visiting the local synagogue years ago while doing some comparative religion studies. There is only one synagogue in our West Texas city, so the people that attend are everything from liberal/reform to orthodox (no ultra-orthodox that I am aware of).
I found them to be great people, if a bit wary of outsiders, due to some bad experiences. I don't blame them in that regard. I still receive holiday cards from some of the friends I made there.

You cannot translate left/rigth from Europe - where all the governments are part-oriented collectivist systems, to start with - to left/right in what used to be America. People do this too often and too frivolously. There is nothing like the American Constitutional system anywhere in Europe. They closest they come is with democracies that have no separations of powers, to speak of, and have Executive branches not only subservient to the Legistlative branches, but specifically not even formed until a controlling majority in the Legislature is attained - hence the "vote of confidence" in their systems that has no meaning in ours, whatsoever (except with respect to the Speaker of the House, who is the equivalent of the Eurotrash Prime Minister).
Fascism is on the left in America (what used to be America). Just because it's on the right in Europe is meaningless, since their systems are nothing like ours used to be. We are individualists. They are collectivists. We don't have political parties as Constitutional entities, even. They have political parties as the fundamental governmental entities. Etc ...

Oh, and if it hasn't been brought up already, I don't buy - for even a minute - the idea that dating, or marrying, a person of the opposite race automatically exempts you from being racist. I know at least two white guys who I strongly suspect of marrying black women, just to show the world their "superior virtue". In other words, they consider their spouse a "victim" that they are sacrificing themselves for in order to prove their selflessness - something I find to be racist in its own right.
In one case, the black woman specifically would not date black men, because they were generally criminals, broke, or just generally losers - she described moving out to the (white) suburbs to get away from a bad (black) neighborhood. In both cases they ended up divorced, not that one can draw any conclusions from that.
So it can all get very complicated.

I think this question can be applied to all Democrats: how can they genuinely care for their children and promote policies that would harm all Americans and therefore their own children as well?

I'm referring to my Democrat Talking Points Cheat Sheet, but it's not helping! I seem to be stuck in a vicious circular logic loop, ala the confused computer from War Games. Ryan is a racist for dating a black woman, yet he is also a racist if refused to date one! Arggghh, help please!
