— Ace A speech which actually gets better with a fresh reading. There were gems I just plain missed the first time around.
Like I missed the shout-out to "Julia," Obama's Entitlement Gal, in this passage:
College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms, staring up at fading Obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life. Everyone who feels stuck in the Obama economy is right to focus on the here and now. And I hope you understand this too, if you’re feeling left out or passed by: You have not failed, your leaders have failed you. None of us have to settle for the best this administration offers – a dull, adventureless journey from one entitlement to the next, a government-planned life, a country where everything is free but us. Listen to the way we’re spoken to already, as if everyone is stuck in some class or station in life, victims of circumstances beyond our control, with government there to help us cope with our fate. It’s the exact opposite of everything I learned growing up in Wisconsin, or at college in Ohio. When I was waiting tables, washing dishes, or mowing lawns for money, I never thought of myself as stuck in some station in life. I was on my own path, my own journey, an American journey where I could think for myself, decide for myself, define happiness for myself. That’s what we do in this country. That’s the American Dream. That’s freedom, and I’ll take it any day over the supervision and sanctimony of the central planners.
Highlights (though it was all highlights) here, plus video.
It's pure dynamite. I called it "devastating;" minutes later Brit Hume used the same word (as well as a "lethal shot" at the Obama reelection campaign).
I know I'll catch hell for this, but the election is over. This week Romney/Ryan will move ahead in the polls and they will not relinquish that lead, save for the occasional outlier. Polls will tighten and widen; but from this moment forward, the preference cascade begins.
In a way, Ryan shouldn't be over-praised because he had so damn much material to work with. But he worked with that abundance of riches masterfully. Watch him gracefully segue from the stimulus to ObamaCare, and from ObamaCare to Medicare. He's talking about discreet economic policies, but he knits them together so you barely even realize he's shifted topics.
His poise was enormous. He delivered a Mortal Kombat fatality on the Obama presidency and he did it with "aw, shucks, ma'am" earnestness and goodwill. He seemed like such a nice boy as he spoke, and each and every word he said was deadly.
It doesn't matter what Romney says tomorrow. I suppose we should all hope, of course, for the Speech of His Life. Perhaps he'll deliver; one thing about Romney is that he is intensely competitive.
But unless he says something remarkably stupid -- something I'm pretty sure he won't -- the media coverage on him will be "safe and solid as usual, but nothing like the power of Paul Ryan's address."
Which is just fine, because Ryan eviscerated the Obama Presidency tonight. Romney doesn't need to do bonus damage to it. It's done.
Ann Romney's speech on Tuesday night was one for the political record books-- the best speech ever given by a would-be First Lady. And the most effective in achieving core strategic goals (humanizing Mitt, reassuring women, reassuring voters generally that her husband was up the job).
And even her speech -- which was tremendous -- was not up to Ryan's.
Romney can't top Ryan's speech because it can't be topped. So his mission will be to simply close the deal, and as Romney has been the architect of this deal, I don't think he'll blow the final pitch. It might be a little unspectacular, but it will provide, for those millions of Americans who have softly decided that the president should be replaced, but are still unsure of the alternative, the reassurance necessary for the full change of mind to support Romney.
Someone on Twitter noted something I'd said before: For millions of Americans, non-newsjunkies, non-conservatives, this convention will have been among the very first sustained criticisms of the Obama presidency they've ever seen.
Think about what they usually see -- a few snippets on the news, almost entirely protective of the Naked Emperor.
I have to imagine their brains are buzzing after Ryan's speech. He really laid Obama open.
I believe speculation stuff about replacing Biden is going to hit a fever pitch this weekend. I'm not saying it'll happen... though it might. I'm saying that Ryan's speech shook them, and you're going to see some panic.
Here's another prediction: I think Ryan's appeal to young voters... is going to work. Not taking a lead, maybe, but turning it into a 46-52 type proposition.
They thought Ryan would be bad. They were wrong. He was worse than they imagined, and then some.
Another Vote For "Devastating:" Some called it "awe-inspiring."
RyanÂ’s 36-minute address did everything he needed to do: offer a devastating indictment of President ObamaÂ’s economic record, with a few memorable barbs about the presidentÂ’s legendary self-importance; offer enough personal background so that viewers feel they know a little about Ryan; and most of all, convince voters that he and Mitt Romney will devote all their energy to jobs, the economy, and debt.Ryan got it all done.

Ryan lived up to everything I saw when I tried to get Romney's play with his gambit.
This *is* the hill to die on.

You are largely right especially with your:
"But the thing is, Barky's not a deep thinker, either. He's a faculty lounge liberal. He's very bright, but his thinking is entirely limited to two streams: anti-capitalism and anti-colonialism. If you've read "Empire" or Howard Zinn, you know everything you need to know about Barky. In fact you know everything Barky thinks he knows. "
Ogabe is not a genius he is a glib gleaner. His main thrust is a weird blend of Marx/Chomsky/Zinn with a whisper of Chutch. Romney is his perfect nemesis by the way because he is NOT a hyper conservative but has more depth at breakfast than Barack manages in a whole term.
Romney can increase our coalition size and Ryan can remind them what reagan taught the American people beginning with his lecture on healthcare not being served by nationalization.

You left one out of that list, and just as important as the four you mention: Smith. And Mitt Romney KNOWS his Adam Smith. His Fredrick Hayek, too.
Mitt Romney, it is clear to me, is very personally Socially Conservative. Growing up in Michigan, and then governing in Massachusetts, he almost certainly learned a lesson a lot of social conservatives need to learn- there are fights for today, and fights for tomorrow. For the foreseeable future, the fight for today will be one of Fiscal conservatism. And I think that Mitt Romney is as good as anyone on that fight.
Do I wish he seemed like that was rooted more deeply into an individualistic, Federalist approach to the question? Certainly. Do I think he has autocratic tendencies? Absolutely.
But I have absolutely no reservations that he is Conservative at heart, even if he believes his calling is one of Fiscal Conservatism on policy, and Social Conservatism only in personal preference.
I'll take that any day over Huckabee's sanctimonious preening.
No, he's not Ronald Reagan; he's not Margaret Thatcher. He is, however, at this very moment, the best shot we're going to have if we don't want our children or our grandchildren to live as slaves to their government.

After Ryan's address, local talk show host was inundated by crazy panicked donks. The main themes: BOOSH's fault...Condi was a token Negro. One guy offered the original idea that Ryan might be as good a speaker as preazy, but teh won is a better orator than Romney.
That's all they got. Surprised that not one brought up the war on wimmenz. I guess that doesn't play well even with the koolaid crowd.
I like the way Ryan's speech was framed between the assertion of We Can Do This, right at the start, and then repeating the same confident reassurance at the end. He gave the American people inspiration, hope and a true way forward, This is what the country so desperately needs today.

The last time that happened was when GW said to the Iraqi's "your enemy isn't surrounding your country..."

Paul Ryan, check your garbage. You might find a furry Ewok defiling it in lewd and unexpected ways.
But I 100% agree, ace. This was awesome. And you make a point that I've been trying to make for a while: Paul Ryan is YOUNG. He's less than a decade older than me, and he looks a helluva lot younger. Young people can look at him, and then look at the senile old fart Joe Biden, and say, "My God, is EVERYONE in the democratic party an old man?" And the answer is YES. Even the women are senile old men. They're relics of the 60s, Boomers who are dying off and being replaced by insane ultra-leftist whackjobs. A lot of young people respond to that ultraleftist crap, but as they get a little older they start to realize, "Hey, I kind of want a job that doesn't involve chaining myself to a redwood."
I think you're REALLY going to see a swing of the youth vote in coming years. Maybe not tremendously so this election, but very much so as time moves forward. And this year is when it's going to start.

Debbie Downer here. Is that not the same way people felt after Sarah Palin's speech in '08? Oh, well. Maybe it would have turned out better if McCain hadn't been the nominee. Who knows.

This.
They wanted time for people to get home, and get settled back in. Remember that Romney went on a world tour during the Olympics, so he would have needed to get back home and get stuff finalized. Including picking a VP Candidate.
And I think it is traditional that the current president's party's convention is the second one, yes? So they can "respond" to other party? Or am I misremembering that?

This. I texted my sister-in-law last night how excited I was by the speech. And then that these people were just so much *nicer* than the ones we have now. I know, that's a racist dog whistle, but I was including Ryan versus Biden in that. Because Biden goes on and slurs around like a race-baiting demagogue with "they gonna put y'all back in chains," whereas Ryan uses the Democrats actual vision against them. (Is it any coincidence that Julia is the heroine of 1984?)
And this is really why people like Matthews are so burned up. Ryan is attacking their damn religion and their saints. The justification for part of that religion is a none-too-subtle sense of the White Man's Burden, barely dressed up as limousine liberalism. Or read CS Lewis's "Abolition of Man" sometime; that column in the NY Times the other day defending Bloomberg about how, thanks to evolution, we can't be trusted to make our choices and now the smart ones among us make them for us, that's right out of Lewis's essay.
Likewise, compare Ann Romney and Moochelle. Whereas she may be rich and a "corporate wife," the first has suffered multiple illnesses and continues to deal with them every day. The other has risen much farther in life than she ever should have on her own merit. Yet who is the bitter, resentful one who cannot be proud of her country until her husband is elected President?
This year, the GOP is represented by the happier people. If America is still an optimistic country, we are going to win.

Not only this, Romney is an excellent executive and doesn't have to outdo Ryan's speech. This gets missed so many times by the donks who get all wowie zowie at how fucking smart the JEF (lol) and Slick are that they lose sight of the simple fact that that's not what's required to run the fucking show. A good executive knows how to delegate things intelligently to the really fucking smart people and then uses their advice for the benefit of the country. Putting together a first rate cabinet and turning them loose is what is needed and I'm 100% confident that Romney will do that.

Yes. At the very least, they'll be hearing highlights and snippets, but many of them will have seen it on their very own television sets.
The Conventions are watched by a national audience, and they're newsworthy enough that not even ABC, CBS, and NBC will try to ignore them (though they'll certainly try to downplay the Republican convention as much as possible).

1. McCain 2008 was not as good a candidate as Romney 2012.
2. That ticket faced an almost impossible headwind, whereas this campaign we have to keep asking ourselves, why are the polls so close?
3. Palin's speech was really the first I'd ever seen her more than snippets. I didn't know she would have such a hard time capitalizing on it over the next couple of weeks. Ryan I've backed for Romney's running mate from the beginning. I've followed him and seen him comport himself in interviews and policy discussions. This speech he can do again and again.
I've not taken Winston Wolfe out back and given him any Mel Gibson orders just yet as Ace has, but I think the Romney-Ryan express is firing on all cylinders. The Democrats know they are in a fight much more challenging than the Big 0 has ever had to contend with before.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits was unchanged last week, pointing to a labor market that was treading water.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits were a seasonally adjusted 374,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. The prior week's figure was revised up to show 2,000 more applications than previously reported.
Jobless claims have risen by 10,000 in August, suggesting some moderation in the pace of job growth this month after payrolls increased 163,000 in July from 64,000 in June.
MFM: Ryan lied!!! Jobless claims going up = moderation in the pace of job growth. And your chocolate ratio will be increased.

That's got to be a sock. Or someone dropped a sarcasm tag.
Allen, I agree. Smith is just as important. He's not a "conservative" in the sense that the others are, though. If you know what I mean.
I actually disagree. The underpinning value in Smith's work, especially Wealth of Nations, is the concept of Private Property. As long as you hold dearly to that idea, Liberty will never fully die. It may take body blows; it may become very weak, but it will never die.
Again, would I like him to sound more like Reagan? Sure. But I have no reservations that he's the right one to fix the fiscal crisis.

Speeches like Mr. Ryan's inspire the team to do such. No one expects them to persuade the demographic groups you mention to abandon their alliances and interests.
Did you not see, for example, all the contributions that rolled into Romney's coffers immediately after he chose Ryan? What do you think went on last night and this morning?

You know the primary difference between two normally evenly matched teams? Which one has decided they're going to win.
I don't care what the venue- sports teams, academic competitions (from debate to Quiz teams to whatever), the team that says (and believes) "We've got this," wins the vast majority of the time. The team that says, "Well, we can win if we're good and lucky" loses the vast majority of the time.
We won this contest- this very important contest- last night. The only thing we have to do now is not implode.
If you're not on board with that, if you can't get behind that, if you can't stop second-guessing everything that Team MATH! does for the next 8 weeks, you're not on my team.
Yes, the Left and the Media (BIRM) are going to do everything they can do to defeat us, but the only weapons they have left are our own self-doubt and hand-wringing. Which means you, and the sentiments you represent are just giving them ammunition.
It's no secret I was no Romney fan during the Primaries. I thought he was a North Eastern Liberal RINO. I still think he is compared to my preferred Rick Perry. But he was up to the task of getting the nomination, and Rick Perry wasn't. He's up to the task of correcting our fiscal death spiral if anyone is.

Ryan is a freakishly awesome political beast right now. I think he's too savvy to get Palin-ized (not that I'm knocking Sarah). And I agree that Romney is going to beat the SCOAMF, and it won't be close enough to become another 2000 rerun.
So I'm looking down the road: Is it conceivable that Romney decides to be a one-term President? Say he gets the Nation's house in order, enacts a fair amount of the Conservative agenda, and is hailed for being the turn-around artist that he promised he would be. Would he want to spend another 4 years at that? Or is it possible he would pass the baton to Ryan? If Ryan plays key roles in the execution of this turn-around, I could see that happening. And I think it would set a welcome precedent.
What think you, morons?

I watched last night on C-SPAN. Ryan slugged a four-bagger. No doubt about it. I enjoyed how he poked fun at Romney and his choice of music, which he claimed to have heard in "hotel elevators around the country". And yes, he let the JEF have it with both barrels: not with hatred, but with a cold fury toward the this administration's greed and folly.
Still, I think Christie summed up this administration best when he said that the Democrats don't care that they're driving us off a cliff, as long as their hands are gripping the wheel as we descend into the abyss.

Yes, but the point is that private property assumes so much that is Conservative, and most people don't realize it. Why do you have a right to your own property? Because you are Equal before God (or in Nature) with every other human being. The two, Equality and Private Property, can never truly be separated. Everything else, freedom of speech and association, the right to bear arms, freedom of religion, sanctity of one's person, home, and affects- those all flow from those two conjoined ideas.

They completely abandoned Hillary in favor of the Next Big Thing back in 2008. It will be interesting to see what they do.
The unpleasantness? As so many people here have said, the death throes of this administration and its true believers will not be pretty. I expect Chris Matthews being aggressively drunk on air 24/7 is just a taste of what's to come.

I won't take a mere "yes," you must bow before my awesome brilliance!
Actually, I was responding to your point about Private Property not being the whole of conservatism (don't remember your exact quote, and I'm too lazy to look back up-thread). I don't think it's the "whole" of conservatism, but if Traditional Values are the heart and soul, Private Property is the brain.

Ryan is like the nuclear sub....uniquely powerful, submerged until needed and once unleased the ultimate death machine. Many liked Paul because they thought he was a policy wonk, conservative, intelligent and educated. But what we have seen is so much more....warm, engaging, sincere, funny, intuitive, classy and edgy!! Paul can deliver in that Reagan way where he never sounds nasty yet he is delivering lethal after lethal blow. It is like watching a poetic annihilation eating a candy bar or bowl of ice cream. You are witnessing a take down of epic portions and what are you saying.....more! more!...that is deadly and impressive. The younger GOP is Reagan across the board and I am loving it!
Mitt must be given credit for picking Paul. Mitt does make the decisions and lets face it...if he was so liberal as some here say, he would have picked Pawlenty or Portman. Give Mitt credit....a successfull businessman knows how to lead and bring in the best. And when you see them together..Mitt and Paul you can see a genuine like for the other and that comes across. I think Mitt loves Paul's passion and remember everyone Mitt has 5 sons....do not think for one minute that Mitt does not see part of his sons in Paul!! And Mitt is a big family man. Mitt singly made the decision for Paul, many of his advisors did not want Ryan, yet he went with his intuition and I applaud and thank Mitt. For all the naysayers, Mitt knows Paul will be the torch bearer in the future and if he was so liberal I am sure that is not what he would have wanted. Just remember Mitt's decision to choose Paul is why we are seeing the great Paul Ryan on the national stage!

You can assess the level of intellect, talent and human/political understanding behind R/R in part by the superb speech writing, especially compared to the speech writers for B.O., who are so tone deaf and clumsy, it sounds like B.O. himself.

Loved how ABC and NBC desperately tried to work in Bush into the coverage, by noting the dearth of speakers saying anything about Bush. That was another favorite part of Ryan's speech, slamming Obama for not taking responsibility and promising to do so.

The Obama love-fest did him no favors.
His fear of FoxNews did him no favors.

I can only wonder if Jon Stewart will do that "Julia call-out piece."

Who will replace him?
1: Who will want to have to go up against Ryan?
2: Of those who want the opportunity, who would the Obama Administration actually want?
3: Why would anyone competent want to join a losing team? I agree w/ you, Obama's going to hit a downward spiral. Who's going to want to come in, and be permanently tainted as "the closer who was brought in, to blow the game"?

Ryan-is the love child of Jack Kemp and Ayn Rand. I don't believe he could have done any better. The thing is he is only 42. His abilities will only gather steam and gravitas if he stays true. He is now enemy #1 to the media and the left, I repeat myself. If our movement is true I expect the gloves to come off very soon. Meaning Palin and the rest of the folks in wings will soon flood the media with defense of Ryan and the principals he put forth.
It was a great night because I sensed the Obama camp panic a bit.

Devastating, masterful speech. All those speeches were good! Immigrants, success, freedom! Next time a lib asks you where they dug up all those minorities, say "governors' offices, mayors' offices, academia, businesses."

My wife is as apolotical and uninterested in politics as anyone I know. She wouldn't know Paul Ryan if he wore a sign on his chest that said "Hi, I'm Paul Ryan". I made her watch his speech with me last night and then asked her opinion after he was done. She said "I tried really hard not to like it, but I thought it was great! I like this guy!"
That's all I needed to know, I think there are probably millions just like her that just became Ryan fans.

Obama is lost because he can't use his usual tricks to win here. He can't get some super secret court records released to make Mitt drop out of the race (give me your tax returns!!). He can't use his race to win (I have a funny sounding name!). He can't use his gift of BS to win, because people aren't buying it any more (which makes Mitt's campaign of "it's okay, you voted for him. Come inside and let's wash that off." perfect.)
Exactly Right.
The RR campaign is proving to be nimble, intelligent and pitch perfect in so many ways....not the least of which in picking Ryan. Even when they make risky decisions and some of us get nervous (even little things like "this convention is proving very boring") turn out to be perfectly calculated and correct. The medicare debate, the war on women, even Romney's supposed 'birhter' gaffe....they seem two steps ahead of the press and light years ahead of the obama campaign.
