Samuel L. Jackson: Why, God, Did You Spare Tampa of Your Wrath?
— Ace

In the old times, we didn't hear from celebrities except when they went on talk shows to say the same three things: "I loved this script," "I always wanted to work with this director," and "My co-star was so giving."

Maybe that was for the best.

In related news: Cannibis, especially early and habitual use, reduces IQ.

I guess we always sort of knew that.

1 I wish celebrities would just shut the fuck up so I could enjoy their movies.

3 Yeah, back in the studio machine days you could love a movie star because they only showed us the lovable side. We didn't hear about how Rock Hudson was homosexual (that one still amazes me, he was all that is man in his movies) or what a political radical some other actor was. I don't know, I don't want to know, and it doesn't matter anyway.
What Ted Danson thinks about the oceans matters about as much as what the random guy on the barstool beside you thinks about the price of stamps.
Shut up and do your job. Mouth the lines someone else gave you and look pretty. Nobody gives a crap what you think about anything else.

58 Mitt Romney's not really human!

The Dems are so deep in their own narrative, that they've forgotten the first rule of political lies.  It has to be plausible!  Calling Mitt Romney all these absurd names is really hurting them because it exposes them for the lying hacks they've always been.  Mr. and Mrs. L.I. Voter can persuade themselves that they're all about helping the country when they're really all about helping themselves, but they need to be able to convince themselves of their good intentions first.  When the lies become so blatant, they can no longer do that.

I wonder why Sammy La Jackass didn't get pissed off at the computer models for being so ridiculously inaccurate and lying to him ... getting his hopes up for death and destruction to those who actually love America and Americanism.

Watching how the tracks of all the models are all over the place, spanning thousands of miles, and have all had to be "adjusted" several times, already ... I think I could be more accurate looking at tracks of old hurricanes and penciling in a track or two.

71General Motors is halting, for a month, the manufacture of its well-known but seldom-sold Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric car, according to trade publication Automotive News.

It would be the second interruption in production for the Volt, which can go 38 miles on battery power before needing a recharge from its gasoline engine or via a plug-in.

It's worth watching.  There are a few annoying parts but nothing that can't be pushed aside for the deeper content of it, which is great.  There is a bit of a foreign feel to its production (more British than American, as ace once noted) but as with the above minor issues, not a big deal given the whole package.  Very intense. It really is a shame they didn't cast someone other than Sammy La Jackass.

I pointed out I didn't have any political stuff up because our clients had a reasonable expectation to not be offended when they came to the office of someone they were paying. He finally got the point.

163 If you followed the NOAA updates (especially the Discussions) of Isaac as it moved across the Atlantic and into the Caribbean, you know that the NOAA forecasters utilize several different computer models in predicting storm tracks.

The models usually vary - as they did in this case.  Not surprisingly some of the models predicted the course Isaac actually took - some of the more reliable models, in fact.

But put yourself in a NOAA forecaster's shoes:  There were some models out there that showed Isaac threatening Tampa.  So - what does any good bureaucrat do?  Sure - go with the worst case scenario and look, maybe, a little silly when it goes way west of Tampa.  But consider if you predicted the Louisiana path, and - for some godforsaken reason - it actually turned toward the GOP-convention Tampa.  You're career as a NOAA functionary would be over.

Those earlier discussions are still archived at the NOAA site - check 'em out.  You'll find the same philosophy governs intensity forecasting as well - always forecast at the high end of the model-mix.  Then you'll be OK.  Try to get too accurate and - yes, you'll be right most of the time.  But it's that nasty little "one time" that gets you.

171 That cannabis story is sort of... weird. First, it only happens to kids. In the adult group, no marked decline. The test criteria is for habitual users ("habitual" = smoking 4 days a week, over 3 or more yrs between ages 18 and 3 . Then they used IQ test results from when the kids were 13. But the first year they ask about cannabis usage is age 18. How dumb did the kids get in the 5 years in between the first IQ test and the first cannabis smoking? No idea. THEIR IQ'S WEREN'T TESTED AT AGE 18. But when they were 38, they were tested again, and the fraction of people who WERE habitually smoking at 18 had lost an average of 8 IQ points, while those who started habitually smoking at age 20 or older showed no marked decline. It almost suggests that constantly doing drugs hurts developing cognitive skills or something...? The weirdest fucking thing is that kids who smoke a lot of weed get dumber... BUT NOT ADULTS.
