Sandra Fluke's Bait-And-Switch
— Ace

Good piece on her latest claims.

The central deceit here -- engaged in not just by Sandra Fluke, but the entire liberal movement -- is to constantly speak of "access."

Access to birth control, access to health care.

"Access" is usually taken to mean you're permitted it. But they are using the word in a novel way -- in order to have "access," they maintain, someone else must be picking up the check for it.

If you're required to pay for a thing out of your own funds, you do not have "access."

They constantly attempt to mislead people with rhetoric designed to imply that the question here is about outlawing contraception.

Of course it's not. You could find only one voter in ten willing to even consider such a proposition.

The question is whether third-parties will be dragooned by yet another government law to cover yet another personal expense.

This is what they call "access" -- their ability to compel you to pay for their wants.

They should be hounded on this deceptive word choice, every time they employ it (which is always). Anytime they're on a talking head Sunday show, the conservative must ask them to define "access," and ask them why they've chosen to use that irregular usage of the term, if not to mislead.

21 There was an article by Rob Long the other day - I think it was his review of Jonah Goldberg's latest book. His point was that we (the Right) need to question the premises of the Left, always. He says that is why Newt got popular, and I think he is right. So in the linked article the writer says: A student at a prestigious law school, who presumably is familiar with the legislation she writes about, Ms. Fluke should understand that her rhetoric amounts to a politically motivated scare tactic. Which I think gives too much credit to Ms. Fluke. Of course she understands that her rhetoric is a politically motivated scare tactic, that's why she does it. The underlying premise of this criticism is that a student at a prestigious law school would be about facts and stuff, not about politics. And that premise is laughable, and should be laughed at. Instead of saying that Ms. Fluke should understand, the ones that should understand that its a political scare tactic are those that are pointing to her as an authority. Attack the premise of the "prestigious law school student" - she is an activist, through and through, and she is busy activating. It is what she does. And hiding behind the charade of being "just a student" advances her cause. Attack the premise, expose the charade.

And you know that rotten skinflint there behind the tap --that sumbitch "denied me access" to a pint of that Yellow Tail unless I first paid  him $5 for the pint!

Now Ms. Fluke can come down to the pub with me (she's kinda cute when she's mad) and maybe we can both get "access" to several pints of that Yellow Tail.  Don't know about her attitude--which seems beyond adjustment--but mine would get adjusted alright.

How do we get "access" to all those freedoms that we've lost under this regime?

Posted by: wheatie

Those "inalienable rights"?  Sorry, but it's all pay to play now under the Regime of Barack Obama.  At some point, you have enough rights.

And now like the political cronyism in Chicago, everything everywhere  will be negotiable and fungible.  Your rights will be just a set of priviledges that  the government will permit you to exercise from time to time, just to give you the illusion of "freedom".

The future is Anna Wintour sneering at your quaint notions of rights, forever.  That;s fascism, modern Democrat style.

Well if you are footing the entirety of the bill for the premiums I guess you are just really really stupid for not choosing a policy that covers what you want. Oh that's right you want to be *lumped in* with a bunch of folks who have no need for BCPs so they have to pay for part of what yours cost. I find your argument that you not reproducing is a communal interest to be somewhat compelling; However I will have to stick with my principals on this one and say you have no right to compel someone to sponsor said contraception if they believe it to be immoral.

62 Had this same argument with my macroeconomic instructor.  We were talking about the "social" well being of different states and how that effected their economies, she put up an article showing the difference between California and Texas.  In the article it said that due to lack of "access" to education and health care there was a larger amount of people in Texas who didn't have a high school diploma and infant mortality rates were higher.  Argued with her that everyone had "access" to those things and that the article was just meant as justification for more government spending and higher taxes.  I could tell she didn't like what I was saying, but it seemed that some of the young kids in the class were paying attention to what I was saying.

Which was disastrously capped (in both the sense of completed and killed) by the JEF's "doin' fine" press conference. 90 It's pretty clear. Most people believe that freedom means the ability to do what you physically can and get what you can financially afford (or can earn through work). Liberals started by redefining freedom with respect to what one can do: they got the legislatures to buy into the idea that freedom required enabling people to do things they can't physically do. For example, because of legislation, someone can sue a bowling alley for damages if it doesn't install ramps for handicapped customers - even if it has no handicapped customers, and even if it offers to have its staff assist handicapped customers to move through its facilities should any ever show up. One you establish that every single person should have the access to do anything any other person can, it's a short step to insisting that every single person have access to consume or own anything that any other person has.

95 One you establish that every single person should have the access to do anything any other person can, it's a short step to insisting that every single person have access to consume or own anything that any other person has. Posted by: stuiec

Worked for Willy Brown when he led the California legislature.  They voted in a $48,000/year car allowance because he said, "My body is allergic to Plymouths."  He sported about in a Ferrarri.

105 See, I wanted access to the perqs and prestige of a Harvard Law School professor.  And the best way to get that access was to have access to the perqs and prestige of a woman of color.  And I figured that since my mom had told me a story in which I was descended from an Indian princess with high cheekbones, well, you know the rest.

Access.  It's what's for Liberals.

106 And it should be noted that damned near every one of the JEF's re-election schemes and ploys involves memes from the leftie blogs. More stimulus, do-nothing Congress, war on women, gay marriage, etc. These are all mainstays of leftie blogs. In 2008, that was an aid to them as it allowed them to keep ahead on the social pulse. But, they were running with a tailwind of 8 years of Bush bashing and no verifiable results for their policy assertions. It's easy to ride a wave of "out of Iraq, close Gitmo, regain respect around the world, be above-politics" and all that when there had been 8 years of media drumming that those were the prescriptions for an ailing Republic.

But now, the message is muddled and inconsistent: Bush was a gathering vessel, the face for all evil. They lack that unifying villain now. So they stutter and stumble about, casting here and abroad for something to rally around.

Which is also why he is crashing and burning: They are an echo chamber, chock full of self-selected sycophants each telling each other how great they are and repeating the same ideas over and over.

When the thing that motivated you to get on the web and start a blog or start commenting is hatred of Bush; when that is the thing that gave you the biggest thrill and satisfaction? Well, they've trapped their brains into a destructive loop where the only thing that gets the blood flowing is those one-hit wonders from yesteryear. They really have become the grey-haired hippies in the basement, smoking pot--still--, and playing the old 45's, and telling each other how the man ruined everything to any who will listen. All this in a mere 4 years. The world moved on, they haven't.

108 She is (was?) a law student, so here's a concept she can understand: I want access to the very best lawyers.  I am prevented such access.  So I want her and the rest of her lawyer friends to pay for my access to the very best of legal care.  I don't want any cheapo public defenders or cut rate lawyers, only the best for me!  And she has to pay for it.

Better yet, all lawyers should provide all of their services pro bono.  Why not?

110 Hey, there is a public park.  Since it is public, I am entitled to have access to it.  I guess I'll just pitch my tent here.

What?  You also want access to the spot where my tent is pitched?

The cognitive dissonance.  It hurts so bad.

111 Also note that the word "access" must be attached at all times to the word "right" as in "reproductive rights" because this then infers that any other state of being is denying someone their rights.

To put it using your definition, Ace, to deny a woman 'access' to pills (she claims) she can't afford is to deny that woman her reproductive rights.

116 Excellent point, your desire for the T-1. I have would have thought that pulling fiber optics to every trailer park, and every other place in the country, would have been mandated by the populace. But, no! And now, the fiber digging has all but ceased. We have a knack for settling for less than the best. It is going to come back to haunt us. Perhaps the reshaping of lifelong learning into a requirement rather than a luxury will help. Perhaps the need for everyone to "go" to college, like forever, will get your T-1, or at least a fraction of it, as a part of your tax bill. Sure, you are going to have to pay for the slugs to have the service too, but that is life here in communist east-west america.

121 What the hell do spinster lezzies give a shit about contraception anyway?

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at June 11, 2012 03:53 PM (MCDCp)

122

Another fundamental fraud perpetrated by Fluke is what she didn't say - that is, that law students are eligible for tens of thousands of loans during law school to cover living expenses.  When I was in lawschool, I received about $9,000.00 per semester for rent, food, gas, ammo, clothes and whiskey in no particular order.  I lived in an apartment in one of the most wealthy zip codes in the U.S. and I didn't want for much of anything.

Fluke and her cohorts therefore must be arguing that they can't even be asked to borrow money to pay for contraceptives.

123 Access is thorny. I want to access copyrighted material, all of the time. I want to learn it, not resell it. I don't want to pirate, but study. Should a patent prohibit my access to the information, or only prohibit and punish any attempt to profit from stealing it? Should you be allowed to look at your childs textbook, a copyrighted item, without paying "again" for that privilage of access? She better pull her act together. Access is a wide and deep topic and if we are not very, very careful it will be used as an excuse to build walls around information. I don't want textbooks, or similar "open" sources, sources that are developed principally while on the tax payer clock, to be treated in the current video game model of digital subscription fees. I want access.

125 IIRC she applied to her school under arguably false pretenses anyway. Planning to undermine their chosen policies / values and replace them with her out, without (at the time) stating so. Which is total leftist / Alinsky / subversion behavior. Life turns out to be 10% inspiration and 90% fighting against vandals, saboteurs and wreckers.

126 Reminds me of a bit from MANswers where they told the audience that one way of getting a hooker while avoiding a police sting was to ask the hooker if she'd do nude photography; an undercover police officer wouldn't agree to that and they can't bust you for taking nude photographs. That poster probably was just trying to get hookers that way (and turn himself into a little girl by wearing the skin of murdered women)...
