— Ace Tough stuff for any parent.
Isabella was born with Trisomy 18, a rare genetic disorder. Most infants with this disorder donÂ’t live to see their first birthday.

Amazing that she has lived as long as she has - Trisomy 18 is a devastating diagnosis; the median lifespan for those who actually make it to birth is 5-15 days.
Prayers to the entire Santorum family....

#24 is not actually a troll. It's a commentary on Dan Savage's horrible, slanderous treatment of Rick Santorum. He's the gay writer/activist who created the campaign to successfully turn Santorum's last name into a disgusting anal sex term using Google-bombing, and has talked up the importance of "tolerance" while behaving like the most insanely intolerant POS on the planet about Santorum. He's really just a nasty unprincipled bully. Which is why #24 was written...under his name.
Maybe a bit harsh for this thread, but not an attack on Rick or his poor daughter at all. Quite the opposite, in fact.

They already have one and the left use it all the time They call it pro-choice. Normal people call it abortion. There would be no need to fix an error is the baby is not born and just try again for a better child. Cold but the left in a nut shell.
Posted by: Tjexcite at January 29, 2012 10:11 AM (sk1Ym)
Fair enough. Let's move on.
The report I read from Santorum's campaign seemed to indicate that this was more of a precautionary measure than anything (his daughter's health is quite fragile), and that he would be back out on the trail by tonight. Here's hoping.
By the way, Santorum's single most moving and memorable moment during the entire campaign was during one of the forums (I think it might have been a Huckabee forum?) where he talked about Bella, and his initial reaction to learning about her condition. It was the most disarmingly honest and naked confession of inadequacy and redemption I've seen from anyone in a major campaign. Anyone else know the exchange I'm talking about?

As exceedingly disgusted as I am by Savage's hatefeast (yes, I meant FEAST), using this particular thread clearly wasn't the place for such sentiment.
I apologize. Sincerely.

@33 & @40 - yes, sadly that is true. The pre-natal elective abortion rates for all of the Trisomy diagnoses are heart-wrenchingly high. T18 and T21 (Down syndrome) are the 2 most common trisomal conditions.
In most Communist countries, there IS no choice for parents - if a pre-natal diagnosis is made, the baby is aborted.
That's why Mr. Santorum's message is so very inspiring and necessary. Ask any family of a special-needs child if they can imagine their life without that ray of sunshine in it. They can't do it, and every last one of them will tell you that their lives have been changed for the better BECAUSE of that child.
Blessings to Bella and her family.

I spent an hour with my 4 year old daughter the other day just sitting there looking through a toy catalog when she was in full entertainment mode. It was one of the most loving hilarious entertaining best hours in my life.
Sometimes every minute does count. I'm sure Bella does that for her family.

"Last year one in five children under the age of 18 were sexually solicited on line."
What crap. There simply aren't enough child molesters in the country to solicit that many children if they were doing it 24 hours a day seven days a week.
Remember when there were 50,000 children being abducted every year? Only the real number turned out to be 800 and most of them were taken by a parent in a custody case.

Oh no. Oh no.
That is really not good news at all for her. That is precisely the sort of thing that can be extremely dangerous for a young child with her condition. I hope to god everything works out well. But now I'm genuinely worried.
Posted by: Jeff B. at January 29, 2012 10:48 AM (hIWe1)
Amazingly, a lot of parents when they find out about the trisomy, abandon the child in the hospital and never return.
This is a very tough situation because despite their good care, and they took very good care of her, the child is sure to die soon. It isn't just severe retardation several major organ systems were affected. And there were several close calls. I believe their child just made it to three, which was a minor miracle.
The weirdest and quite frankly incomprehensably horrible aspect were that several of their family and friends abandoned them after her birth. They would not go to their house or invite them over.
They didn't even go to her funeral when she died.
You'd think family and friends would rally around but nope.
I hope Santorum is surrounded by a better group then they were.
The happy ending to all of this is that the trisomy was a simple genetic accident, bad luck, and they had three perfectly normal children afterward.

@45 -- that's the first thing I thought of too -- life under ObamaCare, and it's not even here yet. It's as if your medical decisions are left to the Third Reich when you have a special needs child.
Fervent prayers for Bella and her parents.

Yes. Being the devoted eugenicists that they are, the first thing to go when medical resources are scarce will be the children they deem unfit to have been born in the first place.
Let he who has eyes to see, see.

Does he or his wife have some sort of inherited genetic problems?
I believe the other child they lost was due to an infection his wife got while she was pregnant that caused her to miscarry too early for the baby to survive long, so not really related to anything genetic.

I saw on Huffpo, where this was reported, a lot of jerks asserting that a "caring" person would have aborted this little girl, and so Santorum is a homophobic sadist for not making his wife have an abortion.
It's like they don't even read what they type.

Took a breather after losing some close friends suddenly this fall, and having a couple of best friends dealing with cancer. Literally closed the laptop and walked away (not even checking e-mails for weeks).
I'm okay now. The kid is in Afghanistan and we're hanging in there.

Rick and Karen— I know first hand the stress that you are going through. I know you are afraid as I was afraid and that you are doing everything in your power to make things better. I think that the power of your love for your daughter is far stronger than the dire predictions that you have heard. My son was expected to live only days when he was born and then weeks and then months and then a few years at best. then with lots of care and prayer and medical progress and will to live, he will be 57 years old in April. Never think negative and never give up. God bless you and your family."

May go help this young lady, and send Santorm back into the fray. After reviewing the SOTUS, and the debates, I've decided I'm for Santorm. The other two are idots.
And Mitt - Obamacare and Romneycare ARE worth getting upset about.
