the point the author makes is the tired trope that men are afraid of smart women, and talks about this real brainiac who had all these men friends and no one would romance, and it was because she was just so very smart. She's a historical figure, and I had a hunch right away about why men REALLY didn't want to romance her, and looking up her photo, my hunch was right, and I bet you can guess it.

Men will go after any hot woman, smart dumb or in between. What they will not go after is a woman who is ugly, smart dumb or in between. But feminists trot out this crap regularly.

Remember when the USSR collapsed? The world didn't know it was going to happen.  It was a shock. We knew they were in some trouble, but not that much trouble.

'''

We have been told for a couple of years that the EU is in a lot of trouble, and may fall apart. Will we be caught by surprise again? The effect on us will be major, how has the govt prepared? Can they prepare? Should the candidates be talking about their plans in the event of a EU collapse? Or should they keep quiet to avoid bringing about a collapse?

''''

It's almost time to go set up for tonight's gig, and this will give me something to think about as I carry equipment.

54 So I think I just learned a little computer repair trick.  This really nice fairly high-end laptop that came with a one-year parts & labor warranty has worked perfectly since I bought it...just over a year ago.

Now, two and a half weeks after the warranty expired, the fan on the power supply died and this bitch was about to overheat and probably kill the hard drive.  So for a couple days I've been using it for a half hour at a time then turning it off before it overheated.

Today I took a big box fan that I use to cool myself down after working outside in the heat all day and directed it to blow right on the cpu so the breeze blows into the fan vents.  Amazingly my last ditch effort to run this computer before taking it in for service (I've built and fixed a lot of desktop computers but never a laptop) seems to be working!!!  The temp is staying constant and low enough that I don't feel like I have to turn it off.

I think I'll buy myself a drink or three!

76 Speaking of feminists and blow jobs (because, going through 60 comments, that's by far the most interesting topic), I think the modern feminists would tell you blow jobs are fine. Except when you do it to please your man. In other words, if you have the right frame of mind, that you CHOOSE to perform oral sex on a man, if and only if YOU enjoy doing it, then nobody can tell you not to. But if you do it to please him? You're being raped. Or something. Honestly, I think feminists are their own punishment. Just enjoy the sex, for pete's sake. You don't have to analyze everything to determine whether or not you're being exploited, because really, if you aren't part of an exclusive, long-term relationship? You probably are. And so what. You're exploiting too.

99 between the battery going dead and the air conditioning not blowing cold air?

Possibly,
If your charging system isn't 100% then the extra load of AC compressor clutch plus radiator fans plus interior fan can be draining the battery.  Car batteries will do thousands of starts but very few full discharge cycles before they're done.

Get a Voltmeter, put it on batt should be IIRC 13.6?, start car, should climb to 14.4 and hold it up there even if you turn on everything full blast.

100 61 Anyone know anything about cars? Is there any correlation between the battery going dead and the air conditioning not blowing cold air? Posted by: Jaynie59 at June 23, 2012 05:01 PM (4zKCA) Diagnosing electrical problems in cars has always been a nightmare. I assume they checked for error codes and tested / replaced relevant relays? A 2000 model car has OBD2 diagnostics and probably extra factory stuff. They may have to (if they are competent) have the car for a little while and leave a tester on logging things while it's driven and parked, at least several times over a day or two. It *might* be coincidence but it might also be something the AC is doing wrong causing "abuse of battery" while you're driving. It doesn't sound like the sort of thing that can be answered "over the phone" unless it's a common problem with the Focus. If I were testing it I'd monitor *actual* voltage with a meter while driving with the AC on, to start. I did a quick check and it looks like others have similar problems. Order of culptits: 1) Serpentine belt / idler pulley 2) Alternator 3) AC electronics (relays) 4) Other electrical problem 5) AC compressor clutch

Who's up for a Tom Clacy thriller:

Bashir Assad of Syria, a snivelling puppet of Iran Russia and China, is massacring his own people to avoid the fate of Quadaffi and Mubarak.

The US and the West does not much at all in reply because we're too shagged out pitching into Islamic nuthouses that dont want or accept our help.

Meanwhile, Putin of Russia is sending helicopters and beefing up their Cold War Syrian Med port of Tartus, a strategic nugget I think no Russian leader would ever allow out of his hands.

Meanwhile, Arab autocrats fearing not just an Iranian bomb but also the same fate as recent dictators, are sending arms and intel to loosely grouped Syrian rebels. Not freedom fighters mind you , but anti-Assad regime people.

Meanwhile Syria shoots down a Turkish F-4. Although both pilots survived ejection, the Turks are hopping-mad, and between you me and the devil, nobody likes a hopping-mad Turk.

Meanwhile, the USA and whats left of its Atlantic alliance sit goofing around in funky sunglasses doing nothing.

Meanwhile China does what it does: sit its big giant dragon ass down in the tall global jungle and watches...you knows its an all-around-you menace, but you only ever see its face and teeth.

In my average-citizen view, Russia and China could probably care less about Assad himself and would be happy to see him deposed in a fake democratic coup that placates western media but leaves the dictator generals in practical control.

Escalation-towards-nightmare scenarios follow as easily as football follows baseball. Bada-beep. Bada boop. Bada Bang.

107 Is there any correlation between the battery going dead and the air conditioning not blowing cold air?

Other than the switch/fan motor, which needs juice to run, and the electrically activated clutch (when you turn the A/C on) not much connection between them.

Why is the battery dying?  Is it just worn out, bad connections limiting its ability to recharg? or has the alternator failed, or is a belt slipping?

Normally, there are two common failure modes for alternators.  Trashed bearings which are loud, or the a diode in the diode pack goes bad, which is quiet.  The diodes are what convert AC to DC.

Had the same problem....with one of our older trucks [a '97].....it turned out to be two separate problems:

Legally? Not unless you've got an EPA auto A/C service certification and all the refrigerant reclamation equipment to pull the old shit out and not have it vent to the atmosphere.

As a practical matter? maybe.  It would be VERY NICE to have a vacuum pump so you can evacuate the system to test for leaks and such prior to recharging.  Atmospheric water vapor that gets into the lines plays hell with the system pressures and causes problems with the lubricants that are flowing around in the refrigerant.

A leak detector that senses halogen gases is good to have.  With the vac pump you can pull deep vacuums then wait around and see if they maintain.  If the pressure rises, then its leaking.  Then charge with refrigerant and test again this time for halogen leaks with positive pressure in the system.  If you wanted to be pedantic about it, you could pressurise and test with nitrogen too.  Nitrogen is a smaller molecule than the R134 stuff, so it will leak faster and through smaller holes -- but won't set off a halogen detector.

For any of you who didn't catch "The Five" yesterday, there was a brief part of it that was really remarkable. They had Juan Williams as part of the panel, and they were discussing F&F stuff.

At one point, I caught the always-reserved Dana Perino with this look on her face after Juan said some stuff that just screamed out loud, "What the hell is wrong with you!?!" Yeah, it was THAT stupid and ignorant.

A little later Juan said something almost as stupid - saying nobody's given any reasons why Holder should be held in contempt (or something like that) - after they had just discussed a plethora of reasons for five minutes. This let another co-host to give almost as extreme a look as what Dana had given him, and then asked, "Do you even watch this show?"

172 >>Posted by: Infidel at home at June 23, 2012 06:07 PM Yep, still here. Yesterday the entire valley was filled with smoke. We could barely see the Wasatch Mtns and we're living on the bench. The fire is on some other mtns on the other side of Utah Lake. They're having trouble because the wind picked up. Been hot and breezy all day today. One of my friend's daughter (and her family) was evacuated. One good thing: no deaths, one minor injury, and no structures lost yet. Also, the evac figures were wrong. Only 600 houses evac'd, not the couple of thousand they'd said yesterday. They were counting based on county figures of housing lots, not actual units. I'm sad for Mia Love, mayor over there, b/c last night was a fundraiser for her featuring Paul Ryan, but she didn't go. She needs the money.

irongrampa - I use a pellet stove and have a forced air gas furnace for back up.  Works for me.  Even when I have to shovel a path to the pellets.

Not sure how you would heat air for something different. Hot water heat seems pretty expensive and solar, well you need sun.  That doesn't work when we have an inversion in the valley.

"So in this vein,is it viable then to heat houses in the winter?"

Well, let's check out your options. If the heat is supplied by a coal plant, No.

Nuclear Power Plant, No.

Dam Power plant, Ok.

Using wood from the forest, No.

I'm sure the Sierra Club will help you in any other assistance.

Been watching the series (all 7 seasons on Netflix) of Dog the Bounty Hunter. Its a little boring and repetetive, but had to laugh at one part. As they're driving through a trailer park dog notices that some of the trailers have flags flying out front and says "I hope the guy doesn't have a flag. Where theres a flag, there's a  guy with a gun."

Kind of a street rule I'd never noticed I guess.

It's pretty simple, repetitive and very picky.  Thinking in DB transactions, closure, rollback, etc.  is different than regular programming.  And the Relational Calculus to do complex queries can make your eyeballs turn inside out.  There's plenty of tools and startup dbs.

I like the 'idea' of wind and solar....and I think we should continue to explore the viability of them.

But the technology so far, isn't there yet.

The newer Helix designs in wind generators.....seem to have promise.

Way more than these old antiquated prop-swinger designs that are being forced on us.

Because GE has heavily invested in the old prop-swingers, that is a big reason why those have proliferated.

The Helix designs are mostly vertical.

And they don't generate the vibrations that cause the destruction to the whole mechanism.

They are multi-directional, and can accept wind from any direction.

So they don't explode in severe cross-winds.

And since they are seen as a 'solid' by birds....they don't kill eagles, or other birds....the birds fly around them.

Funny thing that. Ever notice that water is THE main supply of power? If not a dam to run the water by the generators to power them, then it takes a coal/or nuc Plant to heat the water to run the generators.

But it's still water.

Wind may have worked for the Dutch to drain the water out of their re-captured land, and it might work in wells, but no, it cannot supply energy on any kind of large scale.

267 NC Ref, I don't have that kind of influence over the 'ettes. If I did, I would use it for myself.

268 Weirdest thing today. I got a fundraising letter from Mittens today that had a bumper sticker in it. Thought, WTF, and decided to put it on the hooptie. MrsCaniac and I head out to lunch and errands, at almost every stoplight a car next to us rolls down their window and gives us the thumbs up and tells us that we need to get rid of the JEF. Never in 25 years of putting political bumper stickers have I ever seen this. Plus everyone wanted to know where I got it and when I told them, they said they were going home to see if they got one.

269 Icehouse.  Not my first or even third choice for flavor but I do get two beers for the price of one.  Plus it's a Miller product so I'm ok with that.  Summer is my slow work period and I'm trying to make those saved nickels and dimes last till fall.  Well, mid-August anyways.

Mr. Caniac what do you think about Karmanos' trade for a second Stahl brother?  I'm excited about it!

270 MrCaniac - Sweet.  Do you live in a libtard area? I need that sticker. Been kinda waiting for the VP pick before I get a bumper sticker.

271 NCRef, holy shit, I had no idea that had happened. The Mrs and I have been running around all day. It's a great deal though, since Brind'amour retired, they have missed a dominant face off man and defensive centerman. You cannot have too many quality centermen.

272 MrCaniac logprof clued me into that deal.  Really looking forward to next season.  Hopefully I'll have some extra cash lying around that I can blow on tickets.

273 Infidel.

It's about 50-50. The city of Roanoke is about 60-40 Dem, the surrounding counties about 55-45 GOP. McCain the valley by a slim margin receving the same number of votes that Bush did 4 years earlier while Obama got about 10K more votes than Kerry did 4 years earlier. This was one of those places that got some Obama fever 4 years ago.

274 Thanks to DaveA, merovign, Barak Obama, and wheatie for your answers about my Ford Focus problem.  I moved to Florida about a year ago and had the AC fixed in MA before I moved.  I took it to a local place that specializes in car AC and they fixed it for about $400.  They did dye test or something that took a couple of days and found leaks in a couple of places and refilled the coolant or something.  When the battery died a few months ago here in Florida it was not a surprise.  Believe it or not it was the original battery (not bad for 11 years).  When I picked it up and the AC wasn't blowing cold I didn't think much of it.  I drove the thing for years in Massachusetts with no AC but down here you really can't drive without it.  So I took it back to the Ford dealer and had them fix it right.  The total bill was about $900.  It was worth it to me because even though it's an old car, it's in good condition and has low mileage for it's age.  Plus, I don't have the money for a new car.  Anyway, when it happened again yesterday with a brand new battery and a "fixed" AC system I just can't help thinking the two are connected somehow.  The guy told me there was nothing wrong with the battery and I must have left a door open or something.  I can't prove I didn't.  Anyway, I'll take it in next week and have them fix the air again.  Hopefully it's still under warranty from the work they did on it.  Thanks
