Sat. Nite Chess Thread 04-21-2012: Dog Eat Dog Edition [OregonMuse]
— Code Red

Woof woof. Welcome back once again to the legendary Saturday Nite AoSHQ Chess Thread, which ace apparently doesn't know about. So everybody keep quiet and don't tell him.

In keeping with the AoSHQ meme of the week, I wanted to show an opening or variation with some dog reference attached to it, but didn't come up with much. This saddens me. There's no Schnauzer Gambit or Samoyed Opening. And why is it named the "Fried Liver Attack"? It seems to me that it could just have easily been called the "Fried Poodle Attack".

What I actually found was something called the Mad Dog Attack, which is a variation of the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit. It goes like this:

1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.f3 exf3 5.Nxf3 g6 6.Bc4 Bg7 7.h4

I guess that pawn push is supposed to strike terror in Black's heart. Perhaps it does. It might be more effective if you were foaming at the mouth while playing it. Arf.

This week's famous chess game is Steinitz-Von Bardeleben, which earned the brilliancy prize at Hastings, 1895. It's fun to see Steinitz's rook attach itself to the Black king like a Yorky with an old shoe -- and Black can't do anything except run like a whipped cur.

Here is the game score:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. c3 Nf6 5. d4 exd4 6. cxd4 Bb4+ 7. Nc3 d5 8.
exd5 Nxd5 9. O-O Be6 10. Bg5 Be7 11. Bxd5 Bxd5 12. Nxd5 Qxd5 13. Bxe7 Nxe7 14. Re1 f6 15. Qe2 Qd7 16. Rac1 c6 17. d5 cxd5 18. Nd4 Kf7 19. Ne6 Rhc8 20. Qg4 g6 21. Ng5+ Ke8 22. Rxe7+ Kf8 (22... Qxe7 23. Rxc8+ Rxc8 24. Qxc8+) (22... Kxe7 23. Re1+ Kd6 24. Qb4+ Kc7 25. Ne6+ Kb8 26. Qf4+ {and White wins}) 23. Rf7+ Kg8 24. Rg7+ 1-0

This game was also notable for a craptacular display of bad sportsmanship by Von Bardeleben, who, instead of nutting up and resigning like a man when he realized his position was lost, started to hump Steinitz's leg in frustration. No, actually, what he did instead was stomp out of the playing hall in a huff. Steinitz technically won the game on time. But everyone knew that he had, you know, beaten Von Bardeleben like a dog.

Losing at chess is hard. I think we all know this. But some take it a lot harder than others.

On an administrative note, I may be switching the chess thread to Sunday night. It depends on when they're going to be scheduling the new gaming thread, which I think is going to be a monster hit with the morons. So if they're going to put it up on Sat. night, I'm afraid my meager little chess thread is going to get all squished. So Sun. nite may be better. We'll see.

Thanks to those of you who have sent me tips for this thread. They may be sent to me at

26 Clocks had been used for some time already by the time of the Hastings 1895 tournament but many players thought it unsportsmanlike to win on time - the purpose of the clock was to prevent players from abusing the lack of a time limit:  there were some who would take an hour for a move (Louis Paulsen was known for this in his youth, although he was at least sincerely thinking, others just tried to tire their opponents out).

The legend is that as von Bardeleben's flag fell, Steinitz announced a forced mate in 11 or 12 moves, in keeping with the old custom, so that the game would be reproduced as ending with "and White announced mate in x" instead of a time forfeit.

How about appending the weekly thread with some elementary chess stuff for the uninitiated? Knight forks and der like.

Or explain what you're supposed to be doing in the first few moves. I've never understood what one should be doing tactically. Most people like me just stagger the pawns but we're not sure what to do after that.

It wasn't his becoming a Christian that was the crime.  It was going after Ellsberg, a hero of the left.  Everything in the Pentagon papers was damaging to lying sack of shit Johnson and that scumbag McNamara.  Nixon should have left it alone.  It's interesting to note that LBJ, who supposedly did so much to help the black citizens of this country arranged for so many of young black draftees to be killed in his war.

62 51 Truman North: I learned as a teenager, almost 40 years ago. I was pretty serious about it for a few years. I studied books, joined a local club, and played in a few tournaments. But eventually I realized that I just wasn't as good as I hoped I was. I walked away from it at 18 and have only played sporadically since. I was about a 1300 player back then, but that was a lot of dead brain cells ago. Probably my favorite book was "Ny System" by Aron Nimzovich. It was published in the 1920s and is regarded as a classic. These chess threads are starting to rekindle my interest, too.

86 There was a book I was looking at on Amazon a couple weeks ago which sounds good: "How to Reassess Your Chess" by Jeremy Silman. The reviewers were foaming at the mouth over it. It has an ingenious structure, where the book is divided into sections showing you what you need to know based on your skill level. http://www.amazon.com/How-Reassess-Your-Chess-Fourth /dp/1890085138/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t

173 Wolverine, you should come over to the "Overnight Open Thread" just above this one.  It's where the action is . . .

174 It might be the wine talking, but... why couldn't the black king take the white rook near the end there, when it was dogging *ahem* across the board? At a couple points, the king could have taken it without any repercussion I could see - the black pawns were blocking the white knight and queen, so why...?

179 And that's what I get for responding to the OP, instead of the comments - hello, Wolverine! Your heroics convinced me to stop lurking and join in the scrum.  Greetings from a fellow n00b!

The white queen had to take the black queen with check, because otherwise black could have played Rxc1++.

So far as playing on line chess, my favorite free program is Babas chess. Download the software, pick your time & opponent rating, save your games, & analyze your games with the "crafty" free chess engine. I've tried Yahoo (too long a wait) & Chesscube  (good, but limited # of free games). I play as smokedaddy at Babas for anyone who's interested. I'm not big on 2 or 5 minute blitz, but find 15 min games good training.

187 What strikes me the most about this game is how the mover by Black that threw away a strong position with high probability of winning is simply glossed over.
Unless I'm completely missing something...
So what happens if on move #22 after white RxN black responds with KxR? (Sorry, I am old school, never have taken to new chess notation.)

It is hard for me to find a winning option for white from there especially as black is always one unforced move away from mate and black has decimated the White attack sufficiently to simply park behind the Queen and dare White to miss a beat in its now desperate defense.

188 A couple more thoughts on this post. And please forgive my post for obvious errors in typing or grammar. I'm very sick, fever of 103 right now. So ... what ever, I forget.

1) I use to play chess a lot. I taught myself the game when my aunt gave me a board in jr High School. I went on to become my high school champion, followed by Air Force Training Command Champion and Air Force Communications Command Champion. I quit playing when it got so that no one I knew would play anymore, or those that would were using computer programs. I was rated in the 1800's by someone while I was in the Air force. I don't know where they got that number from though so as far as I know it is just as valid as my street address would have been.

2) The Chess thread has rekindled my interest in the game, though I still have a hard time finding anyone to play. I don't much like playing on line because I find it hard to read the board. Could be my eyesight since I'm getting older. Or it could just be my getting older. When I tried playing on line my rating popped from 1400 to 900 to 1200 to 1000 to 1300 to.... Meh what evers. I lost a lot of games due to not seeing a simple threat of by letting myself get distracted.

3) Those of you who are not interested in the Chess thread: Howabout you simply piss off and go haunt a different post. Seriously, not every post on Ace of Spades needs to be of interest to you. And though there have been many flattering tales about the comments here, you are obviously *NOT* the people that those flattering tales were referring about.

4) Did you know!?! There are major colleges that offer scholarships for Chess? I wish to hell I had been given that opportunity when I was young and dumb, but far better than I am now.

189 I realized some time ago that I enjoy the idea of chess a hell of a lot more than I enjoy playing chess. Nonetheless, I welcome and applaud the Chess Thread.

190 189 TSgt Ciz: According to the notes in the original post, (22... Kxe7 23. Re1+ Kd6 24. Qb4+ Kc7 25. Ne6+ Kb8 26. Qf4+ {and White wins}). I wondered about 23...Kd8 instead of Kd6, and got 24. Ne6+ Ke8 (or e7) 25. Nc5+, which wins the Black queen. As soon as White plays Re1, Black's mating threat is off the table. No matter how I look at it, Black is in a world of trouble after KxR. (I'm old school too, but I forced myself to learn the newfangled notation.)

@rickl supports

Thanks for the reply. Tell you what, I'll gladdly play out the game as Black if you take white from move#22 where Black responds to RxN with KxR.

Not trying to me smarmy, just want to see what I'm missing.

Are you in the Ace of Spades HQ II group on Facebook? That would be a great place to play it out. I'm an admin there. So if you ask to join, I'll be the guy most likely to frisk you for sock-puppeting or Paultardism.

Posted by: TSgt Ciz at April 23, 2012 09:14 AM (yGLxV)

192 Or we can play it out here. Either way, I'm game for a game...

Posted by: TSgt Ciz at April 23, 2012 09:31 AM (yGLxV)

193 Well, I'm not on Facebook at all, but I'd be happy to do it here. But I'm just using the moves given in the variation in the original post. I don't have any better ideas of my own. I assume you'd prefer to use descriptive notation, so: 23. R-K1ch
