Saturday Evening Open Thread

As the Mega Storm of Doom (Frankenstorm is a terrible name), closes in on the east coast, it's simply to terrifying to think up any more content.

One thing I will say, I've heard about the terrible leg injury South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore suffered today. My goal is to simply avoid seeing pictures or video of it.

12 storm coverage in ny is ridiculous. hours of pointless nonsense. I heard a reporter ask if someone could average the various predicted paths of the storm. sounded confuded when bloomberg explained averaging would not likely be useful in that manner. oddly, I never hear reporters asking for poll averages.

Here on the East Coast of MA people are wigging out about the hurricane. The Bahstahn teevee stations are pushing the "Storm of DOOM" claptrap for all it's worth.

One "meteorologist" was heard to say winds from the storm might be as high as 40 mph on Monday night/Tuesday morning. I expect him to lose is job as that doesn't even move the hype-O-meter.

Now that I'm on the record as saying this will fizzle, I expect we'll get flattened by Sandy the "Frankenstorm."

Airlifted is not good. She is probably going to children's hospital in Orlando (Arnold Palmer). My prayers for her and Senator Rubio's family. Hopefully this was to be safe, as there are hospitals closer by but without major trauma units for children.

It weakened to barely Cat 1 by the time it made landfall. It continued northwards, weakening further to a tropical storm. Then it hit Vermont, and fucked them up royally. Flash floods washed out dozens of roads and bridges, and several towns were completely cut off from the outside world and had to be resupplied by helicopter. The lesson is: Categories aren't everything.

"She was airlifted to Miami Children's hospital. She is in stable condition," his office said in a statement. "Sen. Rubio was notified of the accident after coming off stage while campaigning with Governor Romney in Kissimmee, Florida. He is enroute to Miami."

She is in stable condition.

57 I called Boy BFF because he's in Philly which is looking like it's going to get hammered.  I suggested they head for his parents up in NEPA but they're looking at a few feet, yes, feet of snow.  They decided to hole up down there and were out getting provisions.  He said the grocery stores were picked over nearly completely and there was at least one fist fight in Home Depot over a generator.

76 Close friend of mine lives on the east shore of Chesapeake bay - at the North end of the bay.  Last I saw, the storm track literally goes right over his house.  His hatches are battened, liquor cabinet topped off, boat pulled, generator gassed up, etc.  So long as the storm surge stays within forecast, he should be OK.

In addition to what others have said, this storm is huge and it's going to impact a population of at least 67 million.  The cloud deck reaches from the Gulf of Mexico to Quebec.  The tropical storm-force winds reach out 400 or so miles from the center.  Plus the blocking (particularly a high pressure area over Newfoundland) is causing a left hook back into the coast that is practically unheard of, and the storm is meeting up with a cold front from the west.  As mentioned by AtC, areas on the west side of the storm such as western PA and most of WV are going to get snow, so we'll have a hurricane on one side of the storm and a blizzard on the other.

Sure, is the media freaking out?  Yep.  But for some areas this could be really ugly.

91 For anyone still worried about the election: Take heart, my right-of-center (and beyond) friends! Think for a bit... did you ever imagine would we ever be this tantalizingly close? Everything the Left could think of to depress us into believing Obama's reelection was inevitable has been a flop. Romney was supposed to be DOA the moment he won the primaries. "This guy lost to John McCain last time! How's he gonna be the guy that beat the guy that beat him 4 years ago? Plus, he's so godawfully awkward and robotic. Completely unable to relate to the 'common man'." Romney was supposed to be toast because of Obama's strong ad blitz that sought to define Romney was a 'severe' conservative and heartless Mr. Burns type. But Romney held his own, even with his subdued access to funding until after the convention. Speaking of the conventions... Romney barely got a boost from his. And Obama got a significant one. That was supposed to the death blow, right there. Obama soared well beyond 5 points ahead of Romney. No making up from that 2 months away! But it didn't last more than a week or so. Then Romney REALLY stepped into it, bit criticizing the White House's response to the terrorist attacks in Cairo. Oh, the media had a field day with that one. Romney should've quit right then, because he was going to start losing it in the polls. But neither of those things turned out to be true. Then the truly true end to his campaign came with the tape revealing his 47 percent remark. My God. There's just no way past this one. He's writing off nearly half the country? How heartless! He said they think themselves to be victims and just want freebies, so he shouldn't count on their votes? Devastating. But it didn't move the needle at all. And Obama continues to hover right around 47 percent in nearly all of the polls. Then the first debate was coming up. There was no way on God's green earth that Romney was going to even be able to hold his own with Obama. Just no freaking way. ... I don't think I have to explain what happened here, but here's a video game reference I will use as a metaphor: It's like Mario Kart race. Obama had been out front for the longest time waaaay too early. And Romney got his hand on the spikey blue shell of doom and tossed it right up Obama's hind-quarters. And Obama's kart has been bouncing around in place ever since. And, of course, that momentum was supposed to be reversing as Obama/Biden DOMINATED the last of the debates, but that certainly hasn't happened. For such a loser, Romney sure is good at coming out smelling like a rose. So, let's keep at it! If you're worried about the election, volunteer to help! And don't fret so much... if you could choose to be in either Romney or Obama's position right now (in regards to how the election looks to be shaping up), honestly, which would you rather be? The guy that's 3-5 points out nationally and really only needs to take one or two more states to cinch this thing, or the incumbent who can't break 50 percent almost anywhere, and is only doing well in many Ohio polls where the internals look FANTASTIC for his opponent when you take off the D skew? Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to get that off of my chest.

I was mildly freaked out, since it came to my regular email address with my real name, not the one anonymous (ha!) one that I usually use when dealing with political matters. I think that they must have gotten hold of some addresses from a political mailing list, since I do get ads at that email account since I once signed a petition...

Since they were declaring their intention to handcuff any policemen who tried to arrest protestors, I was tempted to email back and point out that if they tried any of their usual crap around here, the police would be the least of their worries, but decided that I would just be calling attention to myself.

144 A competitor of ours stole some copyrighted IP of ours.  Blatantly, willfully, stupidly.  So I have our IP attorney send a cease and desist-and-oh-by-the-way-you-owe-us-money letter.  Competitor calls my lawyer and cries on the phone on and off for an hour, pleading that he is broke, and sick, and whatever.  Then tfg (lower case) drives 2 hours to my lawyer's firm, calls the lawyer from the lobby, and asks to see him.  For reasons I can't imagine, my lawyer says yes.  tfg spends an hour in his office crying and begging for mercy.

So my lawyer is buying the bullshit and feeling all kinds of sympathy for tfg.  He calls me and is urging a more merciful course than the letter presented.  Every time I deal with opposing counsel, I get the full, flaming, rabid legal fucking asshole.  And my lawyer is Mr Sensitive Pants Can't We All Get Along Sniffity Sniff Sniff.

So firstly, no litigation for this lawyer on my dime.  Secondly, spine injections begin Monday.  tfg stole from us.  tfg must pay.  End of fucking story.

Unless you live in a hellhole with zero drainage capability, this storm's rain shouldn't be an issue. Now, if it gets up in the mountains/northern cold and starts dumping snow, that's obv a different story. Hurricane Bob was in 1992.  My kid was 4 and he thought it was the coolest thing evah!  We sat on paint buckets in our neighbor's garage and drank beer, every once in awhile I would grab the kid and run outside into the wind and he'd pretend he was an airplane.

Also, the guy who went low for his leg? should be barred from the game for life. Was it technically allowable? I don't know, but if that kind of hit isn't illegal -- front tackle directly at the knee to break it backwards -- it ought to be. It only takes 40 lbs. of pressure to break a leg like that (says the self-defense instructor).

During his press con today, Napoleon Bloomberg kept referring to "hurricane irene last year" as if it had BEEN one. What a tool.

336 Here on the East Coast of MA people are wigging out about the hurricane. The Bahstahn teevee stations are pushing the "Storm of DOOM" claptrap for all it's worth.

Back in the early 80's some spent hurricane hit MA and rolled through Boston with about 60pmh winds.  We went down to the harbor and from a safe vantage watched glass panes pop out of apartment and office buildings and come down like monster guillotine blades.  It was great fun.
