Saturday Home Improvement & DIY Thread - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

Good afternoon and welcome to the second edition of the HI/DIY thread.

I should note in this post and will do so in all the posts which follow, that the mention of any specific tool/product, or brand of tool/product, in no way constitutes an endorsement of the product by myself or the proprietor of this blog.

The highlighting of any specific tool/product is purely for the sake of informing readers that such a product exists and in no way suggests, unless specifically noted, that I have ever personally interacted with the tool/product.

Please make your tool/product purchases wisely and do not rely upon the inane scribblings of some chick who rents her home for guidance.

There. I feel better now.

On with the show!

Here at the HQ there are certain themes that are a given and are understood by all as being paramount to life as a Moron or Moronette: booze, bacon, and boobs are the most recognized of these but, might I suggest, that another natural element fit in beside them. A byproduct of the need for nourishment, it has served well throughout all of mankind. It has provided shelter and clothing, it has allowed us to tame the beasts and, most importantly, it holds up your trousers each day. The wonderful, aromatic, versatile-as-all-get-out material to which I refer is leather.

It is my opinion that leather has gotten short shrift around these parts and I am about to remedy that forthwith. Here are a few suggestions as to how even the lowliest DIYer can incorporate leather into their home:

Okay, so those aren't exactly the manliest uses of leather, but it's a start. You don't think John Wayne came out of the womb wearing chaps do you?

I searched for a list of cool new power tools for 2014 and found this list from Tools of the Trade. I also stumbled across this little gadget and I think it looks quite cool. There may be other brands producing the same type of products, so perform your research accordingly.

You're sending your kid off to college and, of course, there's an Ikea just down the road from the university. How can you take that off-the-rack cheapo furniture and make it into something special? Well, there are websites dedicated to the task. A simple 'Bing' search for "Ikea hacks" will yield millions of results. The Ikea Hackers site has ideas and how-to's for virtually any product they make and shows the type of creative thought that, frankly, I don't possess.

So, now the kids are off to college with their Ikea hacks and their closet full of hoodies and you're thinking it might be time to downsize. Do you really need that 2,600 sq ft split-level ranch in the burbs? Wouldn't it be nice to live more efficiently? And, oh how you'd love to travel.

Sure, they have wheels, but don't dare call them trailers. (Pshaw!) As we already know, only hillbillies and rednecks live in trailers.

These, my dears, are concise, upscale living in a mobile design and, for just a meager $48k, you too can own this 232 sq ft gem on wheels:

Not to your liking, well there are tiny homes of all shapes and sizes to be had at TinyHouseListings.com. Some are so cute that they are actually tempting. Then, of course, I remember that I have a full bedroom dedicated to a dressing area and I snap back to reality.

Duct Tape: What can't it do? (There's even a use that might suit Scott Brown's fancy.)

Although, this may be my favorite non-traditional use for the product:

This, however, may be yours:

And for the Moronettes:

11 An old friend of mine from my h.s. days lives in and builds tiny houses. She's got that pervasive allergy syndrome (allergic to almost everything), so I think that's how she got started on it. Needed to be able to control every thing that went into/onto her abode.

12 I read an effusive article today about a woman who lives in a 'Tiny Home'. 84 square feet. I'm pretty sure some prison cells are larger than that. The walk-in closet of our 50 year old is that large. The only thing that can be said for it, is that it is a safe, warm place to sleep. I do not begrudge her that, but it is a fashion statement akin to driving a Smart Car, though I regard a Smart Car as more practical than an 85 sq. ft. home.

19 Ok, So I imagine this more home improvement than gardening. The landscapers (wait, you'll see) came out and fixed the rain damage to the drainage system they installed. Should be better now. We added even more dirt to the low areas (1 cu yard to be exact, on top of whatever remained from the original 1/2 yard that mostly got washed away.) The hope is this will keep the water away from the house enough that I don't have to install window wells (and water stops getting in my basement.) If so, we can finally start using that corner. (We've found as long as we keep the water in front of the AC unit, it seems to be OK and not in my basement.) Wife an I are busy looking at whatever other projects we can do to the house that a) don't cost much and b) are easy for idiots. (So far we've focused on hanging cheap shoplights in the basement to make it less eerie to be down there.)

Re: the furniture refinishing

I just got done refinishing my banister top using the Rust-Oleum furniture refinishing kit and it turned out really well. It's a cheap, $100.00 to cover 100 sf, and easy, if time consuming, project that really does leave a nice fininsh.

If you're looking to make your old stuff look better I do recommend the product.

25 The person I know that is always pasting those cute "Tiny houses" on FB and saying "oh this would be perfect" has never so much as gone on a long camping trip living in only a travel trailer.   I see those itty bitty 'houses' and go -oh I know how much 'fun' it is when trailer camping and it rains and there is limited space to hang coats to dry and so on.   That is tolerable for a camping trip with lots of time spent enjoying the great outdoors but for a permanent house --no way Jose.

26 Let me share something that ha been on my mind for a couple of days now. It has managed, in some odd way, to twist my mind around a bit. My neighbor from across the street is replacing a sewer line. He started out by digging the trench by hand with the help of just one friend. The house sits on a corner lot and a good distance back from the corner itself. The sewer line ran from the back of the house at about a 45 deg angle towards the nearest road, about 20' away. However, as they neared what they thought would be the sewer connection, the pipe made a sudden dog leg and headed off towards the very longest stretch of yard toward the farthest street corner. Damn! Yesterday they gave in and rented a little backhoe and have been digging steadily all morning. This is the thing. The man who is helping my neighbor has only one leg. And, when I say only one leg I mean he has no prosthetic, just a pair of crutches. Yet, that man stayed in the ditch with his friend all day on Thursday, pushing and scooping dirt like a madman. Now think about that. You have a dirty, grueling, time-consuming job to do, and who shows up to help? Your one-legged friend. I'd bet money that man served in our military.

33 Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at April 12, 2014 03:16 PM (DmNpO) Jeebus. I dunno whether they're lucky they can do it themselves (it's against city ordnances to do that here) or if I should feel bad for them. (FWIW, our city requires us to chip in some money on our property taxes to fund a sew lateral insurance. Which is..meh I guess, all the sewer laterals around here are clay so they're at the end of their lives. When the time comes which will be soon for me, the city picks up 80%.)

38 Speaking of leather, my favorite comfy chair in which I am almost always sitting is a nice leather club chair and ottoman. Love it love it love it. But it is starting to show those little tiny crackly lines that worn leather gets over time. I use leather conditioner from Wilson leather goods, but is there something better? It really doesn't seem to condition it as much as I would like.

Posted by: grammie winger at April 12, 2014 11:24 AM (oMKp3)

39 speaking of hacks. The wife and I have a patio set that has 2 chairs, a chat table, a love seat and 2 ottomans. The ottomans are weird because you really can't put them anywhere and have the chairs be close to the chat table. So we figured we're going to get some cheap shelf wood (1X6 or 1X and some U brackets and bolt some wood to the top of the ottomans to make little end tables. They're just about the right size to go next to the chairs. This allows us to reorg the patio (which is only 10X10) to get less cluttered by the door and step off it.

Posted by: tsrblke, PhD(c) (No Really!) [/b] [/i] [/s] at April 12, 2014 11:25 AM (HDwDg)

40 Exactly Hammer, and if one had allergy issues like Y-not's friend, or we were back in the pioneer days and the trade-off to having some space was having to work like mule to collect enough wood to keep the place warm it might make sense to squeeze into a tiny space.  But *I* am quite grateful to live in a place and age where space is not a luxury that only folks rich enough to hire scads of servants can afford to have.

I've got some stain left from staining the deck so I might use that to add some color. We're debating if we want to leave the cushions on so they don't get lost or put them in the basement (but then we'll have nothing but the frame and the straps showing.) I wanted something reversible (rather than just gluing the wood to the frame) so that we could use them again if we get more patio space.

47 We use a covered litter box, similar to this: http://www.petco.com/assets/product_images/0/029695223686C.jpg A large liner, which we put in, then put the cover on, then turn up a cuff, all of the way around. Works pretty well to contain everything. The box stays in the guest bedroom bathroom (tiled), unless there are guests, in which case it is moved to our small laundry room. The great thing about the guest bathroom is that it has a remote (thus quiet) vent fan. It has stayed on constantly for 7 years. Don't know how long it will last, but so far, so good.

49 I've almost completed my weekend project - I'm finishing my gate. I built a fence last summer using 6x6 posts, 2x6s & homegrown bamboo for the actual fence. Everyone that sees it loves it. I never built the gate, just threw some plywood on the frame. Well, today, I have the gate 99% done - just need to make a handle. I'm pretty happy with it, too. A rarity, since I can usually find plenty wrong with stuff after I'm done with a project.

69 artisanal. For most people a cheap one will do. If you are more into adventure then most you may consider upgrading. I find more people have trouble mounting things when a stud is not available. And the possibilities of hardware is huge. For the normal uses a studfinder is used, ect hanging pictures and such, it really does not matter much. But if you like to remodel and cut holes and things like that, a better model might come in useful.

Now, the home I am renting has Ikea cabinets and I must say that I love them. That's what is so odd about Ikea: One product can be complete crap and the next the best bargain you ever made.

I found this one funny, but will pass it on to my my hubby: Freshen Up Your Work Boots At the end of the day, before I retire my work boots to the hall closet, I fill them with cedar chips. (Actually I slide in an old sock that's filled with cedar chips.) I've tried several store-bought products but cedar chips seem to work the best at absorbing moisture and eliminating odors. Can't do that here either.  We became a "code county" about 5 years ago.  It requires all such construction to be performed by a licensed plumber and a permit (i.e. a tax)  The whole thing was an excuse to hire a crony as a code inspector and to staff up the plumbers.

The guy who does the code inspections is an electrician.  He doesn't know shit about plumbing.

85 My friend used to have a used furniture store. It was quite a racket. Here's how it works: People who were moving or selling their house would call and ask him to come over and give a price to buy and get rid of the furniture they didn't want. My friend would go to the house and say this: Look, there are only a couple of things here that I can sell. I'll take it all away for nothing. So he'd end up with a couple of good pieces he could sell, sometimes he'd make out, sometimes he'd break even. The key to having a used furniture store is i) low overhead, and ii) plenty of space, and iii) of course, location. Plus, and most importantly, you have to be a great salesman.

(My parents roamed the country for years like that.) The concern with the tiny house is where to put it? Land is hard to come by, and expensive. Many communities would block it, as they do pre-fab houses, etc. And, size limitations. I suspect you'ld have to live pretty rural to find a lot to stick it on. Unless you already own some land of course. Might be a good guest/family home on the property.

Traffic has stopped on the interstate, honking in support of Bundy. David Knight says there are “soldiers” hiding behind cars with AR-15s. 169 Due to budget cuts the feds had to kill all the desert turtles in the rehab program. I guess they had PETA as a consultant on that. The new solar plant west of there is frying birds in the air when they fly by. The towers are 400 feet tall and there are 3 of them so they have good coverage in bird knockdown. The average american can be expected to pay a huge fine for killing a raptor, but if you operate a wind farm or solar farm and kill many hawks and eagles you are forgiven. But if you are an indian wanting to kill an eagle for tribal and religious purposes, well then fuck you. Pay a fine. I grew up in Barstow, I know the desert, It's full of snakes.

171 That BB article has some wrong stuff and is missing some stuff.

First off that was never federal land that they were "allowing" him to run cattle on.  It was State land that Bundy had a contract to run cattle on.  The feds came up with that BS turtle story and took the land from the State.  Since dirty harry is the chief pol in the State they didn't argue about it. The damn turtle has been doing fine wit the cattle since 1870 and I would trust an EPA turtle counter father than I could toss him.  The EPA has been amking massive illegal takings and power grabs for a while now.  In fact a federal judge just told their lawyers off in court.  Why he didn't jail them for contempt I don't know.  Once again the only people punished were the taxpayers.

And that pissed off the BLM, so they confiscated his cattle.

I've been reading so many different accounts of this, it's hard to know what is true and what isn't.

NDH is right about the Bundys needing a good spokesman.

They really do.

BLM has said they're going to release what's left of his cattle...

They protesters are standing by to see if that happens.

It belongs to the state of Nevada.

This stuff all goes back to the days of the 'Open Range'...back in the 1800's.

When these Western States became states, there was an agreement put in place...whereby the Feds would 'manage' the so-called Open Range.

This was because of all the 'range wars' that had been going on.

European elitists had come in and created big cattle ranches.

They put up fences on the Open Range areas, claiming exclusive grazing rights to parts of it.

This pissed off the small ranchers.

All out wars broke out...and the Feds sent in troops to keep the peace.

But now, IMHO, it's time for these vast areas of land to be turned back over to the states.

This would keep the Feds out of it.

In the case of Alaska, there is a certain merit to the idea of what the feds own because rights were purchased from Russia using Federal dollars.  So, taxpayers all over the U.S. put up the bucks.  (Not that Russia had a valid claim in the first place.  Brutality = ownership.)

Same holds true for the Louisiana Purchase.

However, at some point, when the government loses track that it is the instrument of the people, rather than the ruler of the people, all of these historic ownership issues diminish in importance when compared to "the King's deer" problems.

252 thunderb The inverse, Infowars to Breitbart News. Without Breitbart, now dead, his crew of reporters proved no different than any other neoconservative puppets interested in buttering their bread, and having stories "served" to them for watered down publication. Whereas, were AJones to be dissected from Infowars (miracle), it's the investigative journalists in the organization who deserve Kudos for being amongst the FINEST research teams in American independent news. "Memememememe, Nonononononono" - spare us. Were Jones unassociated with his organization, they and those who follow would no longer suffer his horrible outrages that match Hitler in stylistic mannerisms and irrational juxtapositions. For instance, logic does not simultaneously worship our Founding Fathers for their integrity in purpose and dedication in Spirit, Freedom and Genius, winning our Independence and organizing our tri-partite Constitutional Government; and then condemn Free Masonry as evil and satanic. Politically, were Jones truly devoted to Constitutional Governance in Texas and the USA, he would not have personally stabbed Debra Medina's Republican Party governor campaign in the back because she publicly allowed people to reach their own conclusions rather than submit to Alex Jones' dogma on X, Y or Z. That said, Paul Watson and the team of investigative reporters that contribute to the Infowar website have themselves earned the same categorization I give to James O'Keefe and Michael Yon, to people who stick their neck out to see what's REALLY going down rather than STFU, stay in the shell, and repeat what comes down through the pike. I don't frequent the site. But I have absolutely no problem reading an Infowars article linked from Drudge.

270 Just about any Federal Agency created grows into a nine headed hydra, swells with bureaucrats who then want to justify their job, and the agency then becomes an enemy of a free people. Once they have served their useful function, and no one wants to get rid of them, they turn into absolute dictatorial monsters. They make thousands of "laws" called regulations and now the Fed gov sees fit to militarize them. There is no way any of us are not in some way, violating some Fed. law at this point in time. Whether it is the EPA, HHS, the IRS, BLM, the Forest Service, the Park Service, etc. they have combined hundreds of thousands of regulations, any of which can be used to force you to do this or that if someone decides to use it as a weapon. States are going to have to have a convention. We have to find a way to cut back the Fed. behemoth.

No...they don't own it.

It goes back to the original agreements these States made with the Feds.

The Feds were to 'temporarily manage' these vast open areas...until the States were to the point that they could assume these duties.

So the Federal Government created the Bureau of Land Management to manage these areas.

Over time...the Feds began to claim 'ownership'.

And the States haven't contested this.

301 Having been watching live feed of Bundy rancher in  Nevada stand up for freedom.

Reported 130 cows died, many with calves, and two bulls shot. Very hot there. Cows stressed from being run down with helicopters.

Over 80 vehicles of armed land management, border patrol and others passed on convoy with one finger salute by those on bridge...who were threatened to be shot for standing up for Bundy earlier.

Many cowboys on horses driving cattle, freed now, back to grazing. I have to say I had a tear in my eye thinking of those Americans willing to die today until the government backed down as more supporters showed up...possibly due to story out of Reid and his son's solar deal with Chinese. It would have been a bloodbath, with armed government agents, in vests, facing Americans. Even with feed cut repeatedly and a no-fly zone overhead, Americans kept advancing.

While the media makes you believe this was all hunky-dory and Bundy did not pay grazing fees (which he did, to state and county), this battle for land by government has been going on for over 20 yrs (if interested, google this writer, who only stopped due to a massive stroke in 2004: J. Zane Walley). Oh, and those desert tortoise they are saying the cattle ran off with grazing? They are euthanizing due to not having funds: yet they can order a militia of over 80 vehicles and armed men vs a rancher?

American freedom won today. But it is probably just a temporary win. I do hope the story of Reid and the solar Chinese company goes viral (they tried to scrub it but, thanks to the Internet, it is saved and Drudge posted).

May God Bless America.

297...Do the courts recognize the Feds as the owners?

---------

You mean the Federal courts? ...The ones that make new laws from the bench?

What do you think?

It's not semantics.

The Feds don't own these lands...they've just been claiming ownership for so long that people just assume that's the case.

And the courts are no source of the 'truth' on this.

The original agreements with these Western States still exist...it's just that they haven't contested it.

And how could they contest it? ...Thru the courts?

The courts that the Feds control?

It's a mess.

Because they were told to protect the desert tortoise from domestic terrorist cowboy, Bundy, wanting his 300 head of cattle back. In reality, the "desert tortoise" is Harry Reid and son and a billion dollar solar company from China wanting this land. Pity they did not scrub the information soon enough before screen shots and now plastered on Drudge. In a normal world, this, plus his use of his granddaughter's jewelry company to profit from gifts for his staff, would result in him being thrown out of office. Now? He will pout and rebuff any reporter who dares to question him and his "ethics."

The people on the overpass, watching the 80+ vehicles pass, most Land Mgmt, said some were border patrol. I was not there, but was watching it live and listening to those talk on overpass. I did see the large convoy, which stopped traffic both ways on an Interstate Hwy between Nevada and Utah, so they could effectively "get out of Dodge."

These armed government officials were facing American cowboys on horseback, who faced death today, as they were reportedly told there were "warrants" to shoot to kill if they did not go away (and they stood their ground).

There are still Americans who fight to the death for freedom. They were in the Nevada desert today. I stood with them in spirit.

The right to own property belongs only to individuals. Government has no rights and therefore cannot own anything. They may be entrusted to manage some resources on our behalf, but it is our right to disregard and negate their claims at any time of our choosing.

Further, no one in government does anything productive, so they have nothing to offer in exchange for property so any such claims are ill-gotten.

Constanza...I had never really thought about it, until I watched Jonathan Turley argue about it back in the 90's.

Turley said that the Feds base their ownership claim on a 'temporary management' agreement from the 1800's.

346 So the Left is pushing to reauthorize the Federal Land Transaction Facilitation Act. That was passed in 2000 (under Clinton) and expired in 2011. That allowed agencies like BLM to sell land and use the revenue to buy private land to add to their holdings. Mostly they sold BLM around Vegas as Vegas grew in population. Senate passed the reauthorization, but it's been stalled in the House. But now the new bill is called the Bipartisan SportsmenÂ’s Act of 2014. I'm confused if it's passed the House yet or not. Part of that bill included a reauthorization of the FLTFA. It's confusing. Probably on purpose.

351 How can you be responsible for the debts of relatives? Posted by: Boss Moss at April 12, 2014 06:27 PM (bitz6) Social Security is justifying this by saying that they overpaid SS benefits to people and they now want the overpayments back. If your mom got SS payments because your dad died and there were underage minors in the house benefiting from those payments(the payments would have been addressed to the minor children in care of the adult), then the overpayment needs to be returned. And since no one has yet figured out how to get money back out of someone's estate that closed thirty years ago, this new law allows the Feds, through the IRS, to remove a refund totaling that overpayment from the oldest decedent of the estate.

356 The time to worry is when the Feds own the Internet...which is their plan, no?

Over 1 million were watching the Infowars feed at the same time, waiting for the poor cattle...trapped in the hot desert sun after being corralled by helicopters...It is speculated the feds backed off due to Harry Reid's corruption of wanting the land to build a Chinese five billion dollar solar plant there with his son (keeping in mind ole Harry the Cross-eyed Opossum was not a millionaire until he became a Senator. hmmm).

Perhaps, as Fenelon said, even us peons who do not live in Nevada should call and question this story.

The feds backed away...for now. I have read they are regrouping. At least the cattle are free for now. But this land grab is not over. Bundy remains the only rancher in a very large county. Land was taken for less than it was worth, for "the desert tortoise."

Posted by: Jen at April 12, 2014 06:41 PM (Mt+Yq) I need to add...I believe the law originally stated that SS could only go back ten years to determine if an overpayment was made. That ten year limit was removed, and SS hired an outside auditing agency who is finding these "overpayments". Who has SS records from their deceased parents of 40 years ago? If you ever have had a loved one die in the past ten years or so, you will find that one of the very first things a funeral director does, as soon as he picks up your relative for care, is to contact SS to let them know the individual has died, as he is REQUIRED by law. You will be impressed at the speed of which SS will let you know that your relatives checks are stopped. 40 years ago, I don't believe this was a requirement of funeral homes, coroners, etc. and so checks would go out until a relative notified SS...Which would explain the overpayments.

But the Feds themselves cannot give proof as to how they came to 'own' these lands, Costanza.

All they can do, is point to the original agreements which gave them only the 'temporary management' of the lands.

And then...they point to court cases that they have won.

Because they control the courts.

It ultimately goes to States Rights.

And because States have not exercised their rights and contested it...the Feds have 'assumed' ownership.
