Recently I've been drinking coffee black from a roaster Doof recommended.  When I went to reorder they were down for maintenance so I went to the grocery store where I buy whatever is on sale.  Welp it was Starbucks so I bought a pound of Italian roast that was so fucking bitter I added cream and a bit of sugar.  I finished it up today and have a fresh pound from Kensington so I plan on drinking it straight going forward.

Harris Teeter (a Kroger owned subsidiary apparently) has a house brand of Southern Pecan (ground is all that I have seen) which has become my go-to coffee. Throw in a dash of cinnamon and presto, you have your own "house" brand!

Posted by: Commissar Hrothgar at April 17, 2021 09:14 AM (hOUT3)

33 I will now have to wear sackcloth and ashes and beat my breast repeatedly, because I actually went to Starbucks today and got some thing with brown sugar flavoring and almond milk because it tasted good and because they heat the milk so that it doesn't get cold while I'm drinking it, I'm talking a morning walk with Fen Spouse and I would have had to go out of way way to purchase something where they don't heat up the milk..

It's drizzling here, so no car washing.  I'm hanging out with the cats; going to call Miss Linda in a bit, and we may go over to Tar-zhay for a few things, and maybe a coffee and croissant stop later in the morning.   Possibly I might drive over to the wheel-and-tires shop and inspect some polished rims for the Buick.  Dunno yet.

50 Jr. needed a metal can with a plastic lid for storing something. He bought a can of throwaway coffee. Might have been Shaw's Signature Brand generic coffee. He started to chuck the coffee and I intercepted it on the way to the trash can. I tried it in my faux Keurig cup with little paper filter. It is literally the best I've had. Even beats the local Dunkin brew.

93 After the Supreme Court declared Texas had NO STANDING in its dispute with the fraudulent Pennsylvania election outcome Texas should have pointed out that the entire Federal government, to include the Supreme Court, is a creation of the states and that ruling rendered that court illegitimate, insubordinate, and defunct and has NO STANDING IN THE STATE OF TEXAS.
Any disagreement between the states, whether about election law, constitutionality, or even how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, must be adjudicated by the Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court will not perform this function it is dysfunctional, malfunctioning and not functioning and makes itself a Constitutional nullity.

109 That's like whenever I get the urge of attraction to someone, I step back and take my heart out and slap it around and then stomp on it and then leave town cause I can't bear to be in the same town with the person who's broke my heart.
Then I come back and go on my way having taken a short cut.
Not their fault and maybe not mine. It just works out that way. I've tried to have different endings but to no avail.
And that's okay. I'm used to it by now. Well almost. I wonder what it would be like to have someone around for years. I mean close not casual.

It noted that he was the leader of the Ace of Spades Squadron in WWII as a Marine dive bomber.  If I remember rightly, he took the spot when Henderson went down at Guadacanal, and kept it through Midway and beyond.   104 missions. A fine man. Stayed in the Marines through 1969, then retired back to my home town, so I got to know him pretty well.

I was a witness in a traffic case years ago. While I was in the courtroom waiting for my particular case to come up, the judge was dealing with a clearly long-time customer whom was suppose to take action on previous events. He was becoming visibly agitated with him. When he asked the miscreant "Why didn't you do (whatever) - I got you three chances? The guy said "I forgot."

The judge said in reply: "You'll remember next time - 90 days!!"

151 This is probably the very definition of a first world problem, but there's a lot of bourbon/whiskey drinkers here, so:
Last night, I tried Clyde May’s Alabama Style Whiskey Special Reserve 110 Proof.  Years ago I'd tried their original CM Alabama style Whiskey when it first came out at a more typical proof.  Originally, CM whiskey had a pretty little story attached to it that was apparently 99.9999991% baloney.  The salient point being that CM was a bootlegger who finished his whiskey by throwing a bunch of oven-dried apples in the barrel and letting them do their thing to give his brew a better flavor and more smoothness.
But, that's not what CM does these days it "finishes" their whiskey with "apple essence" which could be anything from a glug of concentrated apple juice to a handful of Jolly Rancher Sour Apple candies thrown in the keg.
Anywho, the earlier iteration was okay.  Fairly, appley but not overwhelmingly so with a bottom level Jim Beam thing going on.  The Special Reserve however was quite good.  Apple dialed down but still a smooth fruit bomb.  Very much an idiot's delight whiskey.  One where you can fill a glass with or without a cube and sit in your rocker or watching TV or stare at your glass and go "duhhhhhhhhhhhh" cuz nothing's going to bother you or challenge you from the glass.  Just relax with your eager puppy whiskey that's trying to please you.  It tastes like it'd make a good mixer ass well.
My problem comes in cause I hate flavored bourbons/whiskeys as a general proposition.  Some are okay but nothing I really want to buy.  And while I really like the idea of barrel finishing with oven-dried apples, I'm not so hot on the Jolly Rancher scenario.  Basically, CM wants a premium price for a flavored bottle of booze.  I'm not inclined to buy.
So, thinking about what you like in bourbons/whiskeys, am I being too persnickety or upholding standards against the joe Biden of Whiskeys - all hype and artificially enhanced with additives.
   Your call, morons!

The only downside I recently discovered is that they don't allow payment by Arch Card (the McD's gift card).  My preference would be to use the card in the app, rather than one of my credit cards (this is what I do with the Dunkin Donuts app).

That's an excellent idea. I would suggest checking to see if there's a local repeater that carries NTS traffic, and leaving the radio tuned to those so you can hear the protocol and conventions for passing traffic. The FT-60r (or any HT) can be a perfectly usable base station for local repeaters, just add a power brick to get you off the battery, a handheld mic so you can transmit without having to hold the radio, and a magmount dual band car antenna so you can play around with placing the antenna and not have to worry about keeping the radio held just so.
The basics of net etiquette will be very familiar from IC procedure, I think. Most of the basic electronics and theory questions should be no problem for a nuke school graduate. The only stuff that you can't work out from a formula or common sense is the FCC regulation questions.

I went to a lovely service at a friendly evangelical church in PA last Sunday, but they did praise choruses none of which I recognized, but I guess younger churchgoers have no connection to older hymns and like having a band.

I got lucky when I quit smoking.  I got so sick from the actual no $hit flu that I couldn't breath for almost three weeks no matter what the doctor gave me.  Had to stop smoking because every time I lit one up it would send me into rib busting coughing fits and once it was over I never went back.

We started a series that so far has proven very entertaining.
"Bad Guys" on Netflix.
It a Korean series about a disgraced cop who gets called back when the regular cops can't catch a serial killer.  The cop forms a team of criminals (sort of a mini-Dirty Dozen) consisting of a hit man, a brutal thug, and a genius serial killer.
The stories play out as a kind of police procedural where al-l-l-l-l the hunted criminals get very satisfying beat downs as they are the most unsavory types of scumbags - serial killers, human traffickers, kidnappers, organ thieves.
The actors are all good.  Direction and action are good.
Check it out.

cdc says only 80 million people are fully vaccinated as of now.  We may ont get to the 40% level they say is needed and it's partly their fault for the pause in the J&J vaccine.  That put people who were on the fence about getting the shot firmly into the never going to get the shot side.

Poisonous and addictive both?  I'd say that's kind of harmful.  That said, pipe smoking *in moderation* is a lot better than ciggies.  Somebody who puffs a pipe all day every day is asking for lip or mouth cancer, yes, but a pipe once or twice a week is pleasant.  Seems to me I've read that the infamous Surgeon General's report of 1964 noted that pipe smokers seemed to have a longer lifespan than either cigarette smokers *or nonsmokers*.

Some people seem to have the idea that they won't bother with getting licensed because when TSHTF they'll just pull out the radio that they chose based on some web searches and start reading the manual, but it's a lot more complicated than that. Even in an environment where nobody's policing the bands, there's more to it than just tuning to a frequency and talking like we're used to from the GMRS and FRS radios that come two to a blister pack. Studying for the test, listening to traffic for a few weeks, and getting some transmit experience is the way to go, even if you pack the radio away and don't use it after that.

the French went early on believing that nicotine made one resistant to Covid. That became a thing for a few weeks a few months after this started, but it got quashed quickly for "reasons".  There was a point where the French stopped all nicotine patch exports. And they are big pharma people. i think the French are second only to us in big pharma.

Does CHIRP work here?

Posted by: Duncanthrax at April 17, 2021 10:29 AM (DMUuz)

I think CHIRP is a universal package that programs a whole array of radios, so long as you have the USB interface for that radio. You don't strictly need it, but it's a lot easier to program your local repeaters by looking at a table of frequencies and offsets and PL tones than it is to do it all on the radio itself, by a long shot.
That said, some radios do have hidden settings that can't be changed with the front-end interface but that CHIRP can see; I don't know if the ft-60r is one of them because I don't have one.
Glad to hear you're happy with HRO, I've bought quite a bit of stuff from them and never dealt with customer service (but then, never had to either).

Last spring there were reports from Europe that smokers were less susceptible to the 'rona, since their receptors are damaged from smoking and the virus doesn't attach so easily.

As you can imagine, that kind of information is not allowed to be disseminated.

I quit chewing tobacco many years ago, "cold turkey."  The concern with any nicotine replacement strategy is eventually you're going to have to quit the nicotine.  Whether it's all at once, or just that small amount, eventually you gotta get to zero, and your brain is going to rebel against it.

So good luck.  Anything more than zero is not good.

i appreciate the recco. i did buy some books by Scott Hahn years ago. i am a Presbyterian, the same religion as my parents. But our church was an outlier, it was conservative in a church that was nominally liberal but had little actual control over individual churches. Things have change now, just like the much of the country has changed. it is a time for discernment. I can't go back to something I no longer believe in. The problem is not me, it is them. yeah that sounds trite, but it is true. They changed and warped the church, i did not change.

don't worry about it, just do it your own way. something some don't get about tobacco, not the Horde mind you, is skin is porous. It doesn't matter if you spit, swallow, or inhale. our skin is porous. There is a reason cigar smokers who don't inhale can't give it up. There is a reason why dippers are super addicted, maybe more than some smokers. The stupid old wives tale about dip having glass in it proves the point. People don't understand how nicotine goes into our system. Whether you smoke cigs, cigars, dip, or even sniff snuff, the nicotine gets in. That is true to pipes as well.

i used to follow the tobacco companies for investment research purposes. They always had great fundamentals so if you followed the Buffet/ Ben Graham model, you had to end up with them.

Most dippers quit because their mates demand it. I am sure that it is a good thing, but it is also quantifiable. Most guys that get married, are forced to quit, enough said. That is a fact, the companies are well aware of this.

if you truly need it, go find it. There is always a way. I know there are times when things can't be done, I know people can go threw real hardship. But if it is feasible, and you need it, make it happen. It is Spring, you can find some sun I hope.

414 Tomorrow is supposed to be nice.  I think a drive to the Mesa with a brewsky and lunch and the little hole in the wall would be nice.
