Hi there, folks...

As usual, there's plenty going on in the NHL today, and lots to catch up on from the week. So let's get started... we've got five Game 5s today, so let's look at a few stories from around the water cooler... Raffi Torres Suspended 25 Games

Well, Brendan Shanahan finally swung the ShanaBanHammer for real. For those of you who didn't see it (and there's video at the above link), Phoenix's Raffi Torres (who has a history of suspensions for hits) destroyed Chicago's Marian Hossa with a shoulder-to-head hit.

I have mixed emotions about this- Torres has been (for my take) a dirty player for a few years, but there have been other intent-to-injure situations in these playoffs that have been penalized much less severely. I think, given his history, this is a fair punishment for Torres, but the other punishments handed down for more egregious attempts to injure (Weber, Neal, Backstrom, et cetera) have been pretty weak by comparison.

Roberto Luongo On His Way Out In Vancouver?

This piece in the Toronto Globe & Mail explores that possibility, but I think that'd be a very odd move by any of the franchises listed (obviously listing Toronto as a possible destination.

Luongo, at age 33, is still under contract for ten more years (!) at $5.33M per year, and I can't imagine what franchise would willingly take that contract on. Nonetheless, from Vancouver's perspective, they got a win from having Cory Schneider in net. Over the last two games, he's given up two goals, and the Canucks are going to wind up getting off of one of these two guys.

So Where Are The Islanders Going To Land?

The Islanders are hemorrhaging money in the Nassau Coliseum right now, and the voters voted down a $400M referendum for a new arena. Their lease expires in 2015, and there has been some discussion of the Isles playing in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The only problem is that apparently, for hockey, that arena would only seat about 14,500.

Bettman did say that they don't intend for the team to leave the New York area. They're having enough problems as it is with the New Jersey Devils and Newark Mayor Cory Booker having their own lovers' quarrel... the Devils are having financial issues of their own.

And A Brief Moment From The NBA

Okay, you're likely asking, WTF, TMI? OMG! GTFO! Well, the Deadspin link above takes us to video of the reaction to someone ripping a fart on the Miami Heat bench. I was crying with laughter watching this.

And, finally, my own take...

One Preds Fan's Salute To The Red Wings

It goes without saying that the Red Wings have been arguably the best team and organization in hockey for the last twenty years. They've been a model franchise not only in hockey, but in professional sports, and have had in their ranks some of the best and classiest players to ever grace the game with their presence.

The Nashville Predators have made no secret of the fact that they regard the Red Wings as their big brother franchise, and have made no secret of their desire to emulate the Red Wings on and off the ice.

The conclusion of the series last night doesn't indicate anything other than a good, close series going Nashville's way. Detroit never rebuilds; they just reload, and I expect that to be the case in this offseason.

6 Now I'll put in another plug for the excellence of the Norfolk Admirals. Last night they beat the Manchester Monarchs in their first AHL playoff game to win an amazing 29 in a row (23 of them non shootout, IIRC, for the purists) --building on their record for North American pro hockey at all levels.

This relates to the tribute above: Stevie Yzerman, GM of the Lightning, has helped build a winner in the Admirals (the Lightning AHL affiliate), including jiggering call-ups and send-downs to help the streak --but more important;ly by bring that Red Wings ethic to the Lightning, and it seems to the Lightning farm system as well.

8 Thank you for this! I have been enjoying the playoffs so much. This is my 3rd year of being fairly interested in hockey. I've always liked it, but never followed it enough to know players, etc.

11 Y'know, that's something I'd meant to do a post about- updates on minor hockey- and totally spaced on. The Memorial Cup Finals are coming up, too. I worked in the ECHL and CHL for a total of about ten years as an off-ice official, and got to see folks like Jesse Boulerice and Gordie Dwyer make it to the bigs. That was a lot of fun. The real drag was finally having to pay to see a game when we lived in NHL markets.

12 Cool about the Admirals, logprof.

We've been pretty happy in Cleveland since the Lake Erie Monsters (Avalanche farm club) took the ice. Their predecessors, the Cleveland Barons (Sharks farm team), were a shame: not least for sullying the name of the "seventh best hockey team in the world" (an appellation dating back to six-team NHL days).

AHL hockey is good hockey, good entertainment, and great value for the money. Minor-league hockey and minor-league baseball have both improved a lot in sports marketing.

15 Tammy, delighted to do it. Drew and I tried doing a pure hockey blog off-site, and we got no traffic doing that. So, why fight it? And to any newcomers- if you've got questions about the game, please ask... one of the things that we really emphasized when I played at the college level and worked in the minors was that we needed to help attract people to the game. Part of that is by being able to explain the rules... once you can do that, our magnificent sport sells itself.

--Since they're the Jets' AHL affiliate, I'm also a fan of the St. John's IceCaps. They were as happy to have an AHL team again as we in Winnipeg were to have the NHL back. Their mascot is the hilarious Buddy the Puffin.

31 Tammy, it depends on where in AR you're going to be, but the Mississippi River Kings are actually in Memphis, and they play in the CHL. If you're on the west side of the state, the Tulsa Oilers are also in the CHL, and you'll be more or less equidistant between the Blues and Predators in the NHL. I used to work for the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in the CHL, but they won the championship last year and promptly folded... that was heartbreaking.

we kept seats warm for >12 years. the echl was fun , and very affordable. team ceased operations,and the last ones here, were in the sphl. kinda like watching the saturday afternoon beer league, but it was hockey. they have also left. for quite a few years, our rivals were the admirals. good times. and it is heartbreaking.

53 AJ, they were having cash flow problems for a couple of years... the CenturyTel Center was a wonderful barn (and we occasionally put 12,000 in there), but the promotions side of the team went into the crapper something major when John Madden sold them, and they only hung on for a couple of years longer after that. The CHL is having its own problems as well.

97 Holy crap, I just watched the vid linked on Hossa's hit (which I inadvertently saw at the bar the other night and thought was pretty horrifying). Fuckin' NHL, man, they only showed the hit about 4,000 times in that video condemning it, followed by a montage of Hossa's previous egregious actions. Nice to know the NHL is milking this for all it's worth.

If I were the NHL I'd keep subsidizing teams in the US. It takes decades to build a permanent fan-base for a new sport.

I'd also put a team in Houston. Sure, in the short term you get more money in a small Canadian city ... but the long term rewards are so much bigger in a large US city with 10x the population.

It's largely a "keeping up with the Jones'" type of thing. The networks love a brand new, half billion dollar facility because it looks good on TV.

It has nothing to do with the game itself, the accomodations for the players and fans nor the concessions. It's all about television contracts.

The Stars used to be the Minnesota North Stars, right? Into whom were merged the unlamented NHL Cleveland Barons (which were formerly the California Golden Seals, I think) after two uninspired seasons of mostly empty seats at the old Richfield Coliseum (the Colossus of the Cornfields) back in the 1970s. I saw one game, back in high school. Didn't really get into hockey until the last 4-5 years, though.

265 The best comeback game I ever saw, speaking of wheels in wheels, was Cleveland/Mariners game, back when Mannie was still an Indian. 97 maybe?

Anyway, Cleveland was down 15 to nothing. They came back in the 9th and won it 16/15.

It may possibly have been over the 8th and 9th innings, but they were for sure still down in the 9th.
