— Ace I'll let you read the article.
Now you'd think the guys announcing this decision must be pretty smart. I mean, if you're going to lay down this kind of smack, you'd better be buttoned-up and squared away as far as your own brainpower.
Right?
Except while reading this I came across this--
Nonetheless, there is reason to believe that strict right-wing ideology might appeal to those who have trouble grasping the complexity of the world.
Obviously any ideology is an attempt to deal with complexity and unknowns -- ideology provides a rough guess or rule of thumb in new situations.
And obviously the leftwing has all sorts of simplistic bromides precisely like this.
Did they test to see how leftwing dummies might cling to simplistic pablum?
Nope!
But there are other possible explanations that fit the data. For example, Nosek said, a study of left-wing liberals with stereotypically naïve views like "every kid is a genius in his or her own way," might find that people who hold these attitudes are also less bright. In other words, it might not be a particular ideology that is linked to stupidity, but extremist views in general."My speculation is that it's not as simple as their model presents it," Nosek said. "I think that lower cognitive capacity can lead to multiple simple ways to represent the world, and one of those can be embodied in a right-wing ideology where 'People I don't know are threats' and 'The world is a dangerous place'. ... Another simple way would be to just assume everybody is wonderful."
Speculation.
Let's not bother testing that. Let's get out the door with the conclusion that rightwingers are dummies.
Oh, and, by the way: Let's define "conservative beliefs" as "racism" and "support for near-fascism."
Because you know all those freedom loving liberals would never, ever support a government that intrudes into people's personal choices and dictates the legally-permissible choices.

From the article: Social conservatives were defined as people who agreed with a laundry list of statements such as "Family life suffers if mum is working full-time," and "Schools should teach children to obey authority."
Well, why is it untrue that family life suffers without a parent at home during the day?
Why is it wrong that schools should teach children to obey authority?

LOL. History has given this test before. Many times.
The whole "people I don't know are threats" thing is beyond ridiculous. What they mean to say is "I like my culture and prefer it to others ... otherwise I would just adopt the one I liked better" combined with knowledge that the whole world is not like the West, but with just different names. (And even the West has moved to kill itself a couple of times in the last 100 years)

Remember that "study" which said kids watching Spongebob made them stupid? We all laughed, because it was done by some whackjob with a mission, and it had no credibility as a scientific study.
Well nowadays I hear people quoting it like Spongebob (the actual show, not what it represents) is causing stupid kids!
The point is, these people have figured out that science doesn't have to get bogged down with all that sciency stuff like controlling for variables and statistical analysis that is actually supported by the data... or even real data at all! Heck, it's the new superstitious rubbish, meaning we've come full circle.
Oh well, I'm sure my opinion here is just another indication that I'm a conservative simpleton.

Let's not forget how these people define cognitive ability. It's usually with testing, which is focused on regurgitation of data. They seldom measure actual intelligence - the ability to comprehend and use information.
Further, they forget that the academic apparatus baises the results. The "smart" kids who go to college have their heads filled with foolish Liberalism. The "dumb" kids are not exposed to the same amount of leftist pap, so they are often left with the teachings of parents and pastors - actual wisdom as opposed to Leftist ideological BS.

The Soviet Union is responsible for this, with the CPUSA singing the doo-wops here.
The logic was that anyone who opposed communism (as practiced by the extant regime in the USSR) was by definition a right-winger.
Note that they call each other right-wingers when they have a purge. Was Trotsky a right-winger? In the real world, not so much. But according to Joe Stalin, you betcha.

This git is apparently part of a complete lab chock full of bleeding hearts:
Lab of Intergroup Processes (BLIP)
We have broad interests in prejudice generally, whether toward immigrants, foreigners, homosexuals, the obese, Americans, Muslims, women. We are even interested in fictitious groups and attitudes toward non-human animals.
Where a group or "other" exists, you can bet that someone expresses a negative attitude toward that group, or a positive stereotype that can nonetheless oppress that group. We seek to discover as much as we can about these processes, and are actively working on ways to circumvent and/or reduce negative intergroup relations.
Discrimination against fictitious groups?

I understand that some cultures are downright evil and deserved to get stomped out of existence, like the Mayans and alot of the other blood cults. And why can't THEY understand my culture, that lefties are sub-human since they signed away their humanity to worship human sacrifice, animals and trees. I'm quite sure the animals and trees are ashamed to be associated with such people.
Frank Herbert had one thing right. There's people and then there's humans. And not all people are human, they've decided not to be and that's the real shame of it all.

I thought someone here said it came from the french. Their legislature was divided, and the socialist/commies were put on the left. When fascists started arriving, they more or less arbitrarily put them on the right, thus making the right-wingers.
It does come from the French, specifically the seating of the National Assembly. The republicans sat on the left, the monarchists and clericalists on the right. (No fascists - fascism only came into being in 1922, with Mussolini.)

Ignore the fact that "NAZI" is short for National Socialist Workers Party and that Hitler just didn't think that International Socialism was racist enough
The National Socialist Workers Party really *was* socialist. Its plank was solidly so, and Hitler himself in Mein Kampf railed against international finance, capitalism, and the stock market. (In fact, that was one driver of his anti-Semitism.)
Take out the racial bits, and the NSDAP agenda would be hard to distinguish from the OWSers.
The Night of the Long Knives took place because the hard-core socialist part of the NSDAP (Roehm and the SA) were agitating to implement hard-left policies. That scared the industrialists into withholding support from Hitler, while the SA's bid to supplant the Army scared the military into doing the same.
Solution? Whack Roehm and the SA leadership, right in the middle of a homosexual orgy in Munich. (Most of the SA top-brass were homosexual.) Problem solved.

Yep. Mussolini was a Marxist at one time, and a highly regarded one who (IIRC) met and was respected by Lenin (pre-USSR) for his intellectual prowess.
But during WWI, Mussolini noticed that Italian working class soldiers evinced more allegiance to Italy and the Italian officer class than they did to the Austrian working class soldiers they were fighting. He decided that nationality trumped social class, contra Marxist theology, and decided to build socialism not within the working class across nations (i.e., horizontally), but within a nation and across social classes (vertically). Socialism within a nation - national socialism.

They didn't. Pre-WWII governments were socialist, one headed by Leon Blum, but pre-war France was politically unstable, with governments falling all the time. French fascism only really came out after defeat by the Germans. Part of it was expediency (go with the winners), and part of it was the appeal of a doctrine that had converted two prostrate countries - Germany and Italy - into powerhouses. Some Frenchmen looked at those examples, and decided France could/should do the same. Hell, some *Americans* drew the same conclusion about here. I readily admit, whenever I hear of something foul in this world (as opposed to fowl), I always figure if the french didn't invent it, they probably went a long way toward perfecting it. The French invented bureaucracy. No comment necessary.

Um...
Word is that 97% of one race in particular voted along racial lines in the last presidential election - a percentage higher than you see in military dictatorships, where one take a real person risk by not voting for who you're supposed to.
But that fairly blatant racist action was in support of a LIBERAL. Hmmm...
One could also point out that the same race does significantly worse than the all other races on IQ tests and even the SATs. The result is so painful to liberals that they are in denial about it, claiming that there must be some sort of bias. Being scientific sorts, they hypothesise that all ethnics groups MUST necessarily have the same average IQ, - even though there is no physiological reason for such a thing and there are an abundance of other traits that vary widely among these groups (hair color, eye color, height, blood types, susceptability to various diseases - it's endless). Gee, it's almost as if they think a person's IQ and a person's worth are one-and-the-same (not that they're intellectual snobs, or anything...) Anyway, let's "scientifically" ignore the fact that other ethnic groups that have been in this country for a few centuries less time do just fine.
So - to be blunt - the people at the low end of the IQ curve in this country are predominently liberals. The study is obviously a load of politically-motivated crapola.
This is like that recent Newsweek cover. It's like they're 5 years old, and are calling people who don't approve of their antics "Stupidhead".
Oh, and who was that again that let a group of people off the hook for voter intimidation because of their race? You know, the "civil rights aren't for white people" guy? Oh, wait - that was a liberal, so I guess it doesn't count.
Come to think of it, my argument actually supports the racism/low-IQ connection - it's just that they're LIBERALS.

Of course, if you read Robert Conquest, you'd know that it was never really that popular, and the brown shirts just intimidated everyone else into compliance.
Yep, the other problem was, what was the alternative? The KPD (German Communist Party) was agitating to take over, and indeed had already seized power once in Munich and set up soviets there in the early 20s (i.e., a few years after Lenin had done the same thing in Russia).
People were terrified of the Communists, before which the other parties were helpless. Only the Nazis had the muscle to fight them in the streets, and to prevent the Communists from breaking up their meetings. (The SA was originally founded for just this purpose.)
So the choice before Germans was between Communists and Nazis, when the true nature of the latter was not really known, but that of the former was. The Germans were screwed either way.

It's also interesting that psychology, which is the simplest possible major and the one that people gravitate to when they can't handle the rigors of even the easiest humanities subject, is also the one that is almost exclusivly populated by liberals. @183 'I'm sure there are plenty of other problems with this paper, but a 30 second look of how they measured "conservatism" shows that the authors basically define it exactly the way a liberal making a strawman argument would.'
No doubt. Reminds me of when my kid brought home that study showing how "uninformed" Fox News watchers were. A pretty cursory look at the thing showed that that they listed a bunch of liberal beliefs and strawmen, and rated how "well informed" you were based on how much you deviated from the beliefs, or matched the strawman. In at least one case, they polled, essentially, whether you were a "birther", and related claims, even though not a single commentator, or broadcaster on Fox ever supported those claims. It appears you can be "misinformed" on Fox without them even giving you the misinformation.

Hey, I read about changing people's feelings in some book. It was boring, because it had no pictures. Anyway these people who knew what was best for everybody wanted this guy to like them. So they put this cage with a rat in it over his face. Changed his feelings about those people real fast, and he darned if he didn't start just loving them.

Sorry guys, the answers of political ideology vs. intelligence is "it's complicated". No seriously, that is the correct answer.
Want to know how I know this? I ran down both exit polls and census data with party affiliation for a couple decades t avoid a single cycle messing with my general data.
Democrats highest winning category is? HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUTS.
Democrats 2nd highest category is? PhD GRADUATES
No shit... Republicans tend to take the HS grads and BS/BA College grads.
So the party that has the lowest end of the spectrum educationally ALSO has the highest end of the spectrum educationally. And although it's not a perfect match, IQ to education level is generally pretty consistent, especially at the extremes...
So this study claiming it's not complicated and in fact really easy to explain? Bullshit, dead wrong, and poor science.
Oh, and racism is only on the right-wing? who put it there... ask a liberal and you've got a decent change it was the JOOOOS as they're the cause of all the evil in the world... or something.
But the left doesn't have any bigots; unlike the right who you know are stupid inbred bigots without even meeting any of them.. because they're all the same.
Like I said... that people who call themselves scientists do crap like this... it makes me cry a little inside.
Accept the real answer... it's too f***ing complicated to boil down to a short news story; and if you claim otherwise you're not a scientist, you're a biased bigoted retard.

No surprise. Liberals come mostly in two flavors:
1) Losers looking for a free handout and
2) Elitists, who feel entitled to a position of priviledge without having to do anything that is actually useful, and are generally narcissistic control-freaks who believe that THEY will be the ones who end up calling the shots. It is true Psych types were once required to study so fairly difficult math but that was being watered down by the 50s. Jerry Pournelle, who has his Doctorate in Psychology, has often discussed how his real career in Aerospace is owed to having a mentor who required his students to take the real Stat courses rather than the 'For Psych Students' version that already being offered then.
What he has also discussed publicly is that almost everything they were taught in Psych itself was later shown to be utter nonsense.
It is still being taught.
