Second Producer Quietly Fired in NBC's EditGate
— Ace

Supposedly this was all an accident.

And yet the same identical false edits were created both at NBC/NY HQ (for the Today show) and down at the NBC Miami affiliate.

An unnamed source at NBC6/Miami indicates that NBC really isn't sorry at all:

“The network is very sensitive about the whole Al Sharpton/MSNBC issue, so when the right-wing bloggers started hammering, they needed to throw them fresh meat,” said the station source, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the controversy. “It’s not at all clear how this happened. Obviously, there was miscommunication.”

So NBC didn't fire anyone because they thought they committed a firable offense -- they just wanted to appease "right-wing bloggers" with some "fresh meat" due to their being "sensitive" about the "Al Sharpton/MSNBC issue."

Meanwhile, Reuters begins to correct the egregiously misreported story of George Zimmerman.

Based on extensive interviews with relatives, friends, neighbors, schoolmates and co-workers of Zimmerman in two states, law enforcement officials, and reviews of court documents and police reports, the story sheds new light on the man at the center of one of the most controversial homicide cases in America.

The 28-year-old insurance-fraud investigator comes from a deeply Catholic background and was taught in his early years to do right by those less fortunate. He was raised in a racially integrated household and himself has black roots through an Afro-Peruvian great-grandfather – the father of the maternal grandmother who helped raise him.

A criminal justice student who aspired to become a judge, Zimmerman also concerned himself with the safety of his neighbors after a series of break-ins committed by young African-American men.

Though civil rights demonstrators have argued Zimmerman should not have prejudged Martin, one black neighbor of the Zimmermans said recent history should be taken into account.

“Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. I’m black, OK?” the woman said, declining to be identified because she anticipated backlash due to her race. She leaned in to look a reporter directly in the eyes. “There were black boys robbing houses in this neighborhood,” she said. “That’s why George was suspicious of Trayvon Martin.”

Duh.

Anyway, so now Zimmerman might be okay because he's partly black himself? This continues the disgusting pattern of determining guilt or innocence based on Racial Status. I'm glad for Zimmerman that this bit of genetic inheritance might help him -- but is this what America is now? Essentially deciding guilt or innocence by a racial mitichlorian count?

Over at the American Spectator, John Hayward recapitulates the egregious lynch-mob "reporting" here.

Why did the media push a story so completely at variance with the picture Reuters paints of Zimmerman in this extensive profile? My guess is a combination of the hunger for sensationalism, a political agenda, and pure laziness. There was a time when such a major story would have called for more shoe leather, and less reliance upon press releases from interested parties.

Oh, let me offer a couple of more reasons:

Despite the fact that the media claims to be above the blogs, they do in fact consume and trust blogs -- Leftwing blogs. Although we on the right think we've done something awesome when we push a true story into the MSM, leftwing blogs have far, far more influence on the media. After all-- they can get false stories into the MSM.

And cowardice. You know the "elephant in the room" that black woman mentioned? Yeah, the media -- brave and dauntless in its pursuit of truth -- is too cowardly to mention slightly discomforting facts, like the pattern of robberies committed by teenaged black boys in the neighborhood.

3 The MFM template for the Martin/Zimmerman story was "Innocent Black Schoolboy Gunned Down By Trigger-Happy White Racist." The only word that turned out to be true was the word "Black." And that's the only word they haven't had to revise or retract.

6 Zimmerman really should sue for defamation.  And, if the charges get tossed by the judge (as that Dershowitz fellow (sorry, I just know he's some famous lawyer) thinks should and will happen), he should turn around and sue the State of Florida for false prosecution.

Once we realized Zimmerman was a f*%&ing white Hispanic, we had to double down. "Coons!" we shouted. Then everyone reminded us that this isn't 1967. We only had one more option. We had to get creative with...well, you know. I'm sure you realize that we had to do it. There was a story here! A poor black child was killed by a gun happy racist. Almost as sad as Zimmerman's total railroading by the media is his black neighbor's fear of coming forward in his defense because she fears reprisal.    I guess "Snitches get stitches" isn't just for     protecting     gang members anymore.

“There were black boys robbing houses in this neighborhood,” she said. “That’s why George was suspicious of Trayvon Martin.”

From what we've learned of Trayvon thus far -- which isn't much, given that his family is intent on preserving his image as a saintly little angel -- is there any reason to believe that Zimmerman wasn't justified in suspecting him?  Is there any reason to believe that Trayvon HADN'T been one of the black youths breaking into homes in the neighborhood?   That doesn't mean that he deserved to be shot    and killed, and we won't know whether that was justified until after all the evidence comes out.    But it DOES mean that,      far from     going after Trayvon solely because he was black, Zimmerman was watching Martin because he fit the description of known malfeasants in the neighborhood.   Race may be a factor in that description, but it is not the     SOLE factor.

So TWO MONTHS after this alleged "crime" happened, and Reuters is just now bothering to do what they should have done before running with the story.

NBC and the rest of the MSM need to understand that when they are forced to retract their stories that "right-wing bloggers" aren't "forcing" them to do anything other than THE JOB THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

But a guilty black yute doesn't fit their narrative of the noble minority, and they (the MSM) don't have the moral fortitude to stand up and tell their peers that they are responsible for reporting the facts, however uncomfortable they might be.

49 Subject: The Sanders Strategy [redacted], please join with Senator Bernie Sanders, and help change the conversation about deficits in Washington, DC, by co-signing his progressive budget proposal. Click here to add your name. Imagine if Democrats in Congress made opening bids that were not already compromises. For example, what if the Democratic leadership had started the health care fight by proposing a single-payer plan instead of a public option? Bernie Sanders actually did start the health care fight by proposing a single-payer plan. He stuck to it for a long time, and only agreed to support the final bill after $10 billion in additional funding for non-profit, community health centers was included. Because of his shrewdness, these community health centers now provide affordable primary care to tens of millions more low-income Americans than they did before the Affordable Care Act. Now, as the fight over the federal budget moves to the Senate, Sanders is once again coming out with a strong opening bid. He is introducing a budget that reduces the deficit by making big corporations and the very wealthy pay their fair share, by reducing defense spending, by strengthening Social Security and Medicare, and by creating good paying jobs. It's a truly progressive alternative to the horrifying Republican budget, and who knows what we can accomplish if we make it our opening bid. Please join with Senator Bernie Sanders, and help change the conversation about deficits in Washington, DC, by co-signing his progressive budget proposal. Keep fighting, Chris Cocksucker Bowers, Daily Kos

This was more than just a 'distraction'....I think.

The Breitbart tapes were released, showing Barky's obsession with Critical Race Theory. ......Barky was getting mocked and ridiculed for being  neurotically obsessed with an outdated predilection to seeing racial prejudices in everything.

He had to do something....fast....to show that racism against black people was alive and well.

So this story, that was already over....was resurrected, and whipped into a big National Outrage. ....So, while yes, it served as a big distraction....it was also a distraction that was designed to give credence to Barky's racial outlook.

And NBC....being Barky's main propaganda arm, had to doctor the 911 tapes to forward the meme that they were given to promote. ....They were following the directive that they were given.

61 It's kind of amusing, how practically every part of the establishment is so skeptical of blogs in general, or claim to be.   Just the way they say the word "blogs...(eww ick)" cracks me up. In my life, that's the GOP, the state Bar, the talking heads on TV.   They can't even discern between a blog post, a blog comment, or a comment to a news story. It's always so-and-so "made a blog" and got in trouble for what he said blah blah.   And they think someone like Insty is "anonymous" even when they're not.

79 I honestly thought the family attorney Crump knew who George Zimmerman was when he started pushing this story a month after it happened. Nobody on the family/media side knew until after it went national?

I feel they buried who he was so they could inflame racial tensions and then once inflamed, release his picture and tell everyone he was a "white hispanic". A bunch of outlets even whitened his picture.

And cowardice. You know the "elephant in the room" that black woman mentioned? Yeah, the media -- brave and dauntless in its pursuit of truth -- is too cowardly to mention slightly discomforting facts, like the pattern of robberies committed by teenaged black boys in the neighborhood.<<<<

I disagree. I don't think it's cowardice at all.  I think it's a carefully considered decision to exclude mitigating factors because if that was mentioned, then you might think the wrong thoughts.

Namely, that Zimmerman, or ANYONE, may have been justified in both A) being understandably suspicious of an unknown black male in a neighborhood preyed upon by black males, and B) using a firearm to defend himself.

The first is an automatic sin. There will be no discussion of race outside of the media-approved format of Blacks as victims and Whites as oppressors.

The second is also axiomatic:  citizens cannot be trusted with firearms and should not be allowed to own them. Showing that, in fact, they are tools that in this instance and many others, SAVE lives, runs counter to the liberal orthodoxy.

CALCULATION, not cowardice.  I fear mislabeling them encourages us to underestimate them.

Although we on the right think we've done something awesome when we push a true story into the MSM, leftwing blogs have far, far more influence on the media. After all-- they can get false stories into the MSM."

This is so true.  I browse leftwing blogs and both the Sandra Fluke and Trayvon Martin controversies were discussed a few days/week before they made it into the National media.  Pandagon and Feministe had them both, I think.

The takeaway is that the "narrative" and reporting angles ("this is about an intersection of race and white privilege) get formed in these echo chambers, and then are pre-packaged when they make National news.  I have no doubt that writers and editors are participants/commentators on these blogs.

Short version, Democrats will not grow up and face reality as long as Obama is in charge of their party.

This is the best behaved Republicans have been since 1994.  Paul Ryan is a selfless and brilliant guy and the republicans are willing to harm their parties image and strength to save the Social Safety net from ripping apart under the weight of the debt.

The democrats are the worst behaved, in my life time.  The nicest way to put it is they are still in the denial/blame stage of the collapse of their post FDR blue model under its own weight.  The "unintended" catastrophes of the welfare state are now a bigger then many of the problems it set out to solve, like the collapse of the black family or children graduating from a decade and half of constant education barely able to read or write, in spite of all time record spending into "educational" apparatus.

I don't think Democrats will grow up and face reality, or do anything but leverage even the Republicans Hail Marys to save the blue state model, leverage it against them for electoral advantage,   (DWS-Mediscare campaign etc..) as long as Obama is in charge of their party.  The bitchy left Wailed and gnashed  when Clinton and Gingrich reformed welfare and now that wing of the party is in total control.

That's another aspect to this case that  hasn't been  covered much. There are Florida laws that specifically  cover  members of a NW, and IIRC, little Trayvon (of the gang tats and gold grill) violated a couple of them.

That's what is so disgusting about this whole thing. We've  heard nearly everything except the truth. There is a reason why GZ wasn't charged immediately afterwards.  Do you think for one minute that with someone dead the city, county and state prosecutors  offices weren't notified?

160 @145 Is it time to have a serious discussion about the Stand Your Ground Laws?

You got it. The Florida stand-your-ground law is written to prohibit lawsuits against a defender unless he is arrested. Having achieved a certain quality of "arrest," GZ can now be swept off the stage as a massive insurance trial goes class-action, takes years to work its way up through the appeals processes, and becomes fair game for congressional pre-emption of state law.

We will all be standing around swiping each others' cards about how great it is that George walked, while the Cabal snickers quietly up its sleeve about the massive, tobacco-company-grade power grab in progress. They'll go after the NRA, gun makers, gun shops, gun owners, until you're genuinely pleased that all we lose is the defense laws.

As to your premise about how the left can get false stories into the MSM, there was one huge one here: The one about how neo-nazi groups were patrolling the town. Some leftie blog in FL threw that out there. Professor Jacobson makes a few phone calls and learns it's flat false. Meanwhile even Drudge is linking to the original story.

168 Trayvon was out of control at home and school, arrested by his hometown police. So Trayvon's mom dumped him on his dad, who dumped him on his girlfriend before leaving Trayvon, as did she. The dad's girlfriend's WTF first response when she got home met by police was to cover her ass crying "skittles". It's just too stupid.

Where's the supposed convenience store clerk statement or security tape recording establishing her fictional response, that Trayvon'd just been coming back from buying skittles 'n (alcoholic) tea to watch more tv with his dad who wasn't even at her apt. watching tv, she not being home either while Trayvon was out skulking.

Skittles and unicorns. Where's the bag of skittles -- no media photos from the scene showing skitttles and tea on the ground? Next, we'll be told that Trayvon scraped together all of his pennies to be able to afford the skittles and tea. And he was maliciously killed for having "felt he deserved" a treat after a long day of homework and chores, being an outstanding student achiever and responsible citizen by virtue of skin tone.

Justice for Trayvon requires exposing his record and life, not fabricating a fairy tale with unicorns and skittles.

Oh yeah....this has deffinitely served as a big distraction. ....But it's also a 2-fer, because it is designed to give credence to Barky's obsession with racism. He had to show that it 'still exists'.

And since it's an election year, it's really sort of a 3-fer:

2) show that racism is still 'rampant'

3) whip up enthusiasm for getting Barky reelected

Arrest and jail the prosecutor and her team of idiots for abuse of power.  They should all serve at least the amount of time they put Zimmerman in jeopardy of receiving.

Just like Nifong, it would be an offense against America to let these despicable, lying scumbag criminals go free (America chewed the pooch by not sailing Nifong - which was a must).  To let these asswipes continue to act on behalf of the State for prosecutions would be criminal, itself.

188 The prosecutor may have done the only "right" thing she could have.

If she had left it to the grand jury, they could have gone for manslaughter. Manslaughter in the hands of an unpredictable jury could lead to a conviction and a maximum sentence. GZ's life would be miserable for a lot longer that it will be under an acquittal.

If she had not filed charges, then the rioting and the attacks would have started immediately. GZ would not obtain any justice by that route.

As it stands, we have what amounts to a cooling off period. The cretins who are demanding Z's head were partially satisfied by the prosecutor charging Z.

200 ______________________________

Ace,

I'm afraid it's much worse and much simpler than all that. Not that the factors you and John Hayword listed are wrong. They're just secondary.

American culture suffers from two complementary ailments: White Guilt dovetailing with Non-White Grievance.

The result is a potent cultural fantasy that racism against non-whites is everywhere. According to this fantasy, the causative forces of widespread (and even institutional) white-racism go largely unseen. And yet the evidence that such insidious racism is having it's way is plentiful. Every single poor or misbehaving non-white person is proof positive of white-racism. Why else would their lives suck? The results are obvious. Clearly they have been held back and/or abused by racism. And such "results" are all the "proof" that the fantasists ever need to make sense of the world.

NBC isn't guilty of lazy reporting on the Zimmerman/Martin case. Rather, they reported it exactly as they saw it. Based on the "facts", racial profiling resulting in the death of a poor, defenseless black child is exactly what happened. That's their world.
And they likely worked very hard in reporting this very important story.

But the problem is, they have no clue how distorted their vision of the "facts" is by the cultural fantasy of endemic racial injustice.

Our horrible public schools have been especially effective in inculcating this narrative of paradigmatic racial injustice. It will take many generations before it is corrected. And the correction will be very painful and scary. It requires a massive wave of level-headed individuals stepping forward and calmly but firmly calling bullshit on the cultural fantasy.

And that means being shouted down and accused of racism.

There was a claimed "self defense" fatal shooting at a Taco Bell in Laveen AZ (outside Phoenix) earlier this month.  See if you can figure out why this case has not attracted any media attention or racial grievance industry demonstrations:

A man in his 20's was driving his car thru the drive-thru at the Taco Bell.  Another man walked in front of the car.  The driver and the walker had words, and the driver shot the walker from inside his car.  The driver claimed he had shot to defend his life, after the walker swung an iron pipe at him.  Witnesses said the walker had nothing in his hand but a dog leash (he had been walking his dog when shot), and police found no iron pipe or other weapon at the  scene.  The victim's family says he was mentally disabled, and had the mental capacity of a 12-year old.  The shooter was not arrested.

Why no outrage over this shooting?  The victim was white; the shooter was black.

212 I suppose it doesn't occur to anyone on the political left that perhaps Trayvon Martin DID receive justice - instantly and on the spot from the business end of Zimmerman's gun, IF events went down as I suspect from what I heard.

Trayvon Martin tells his girlfriend over the phone he's going to try to lose someone who's following him, takes a side path, and does lose Zimmerman.  Zimmerman heads back to his car, having lost track of Trayvon Martin.  Very speculatively, Martin may have felt dissed at having been followed in the first place and decides to turn predatory and hunt down his pursuer.  IF true, that course of action was totally unnecessary on his part, and turned out to be a fatal mistake.  But for whatever reason, it seems Martin could not leave well enough alone after losing his follower, and came up to him (maybe even from behind), and asked, "Hey, you got a f*ckin' problem?"  Upon hearing Zimmerman's answer of "No, I don't have a problem", Martin slugged him in the nose and growled, "Well you do now!" and attacked like a stereotypical predatory savage.  Apparently during the fight, Martin said something to the effect of "You're gonna die tonight!" and reached for Zimmerman's gun.  Zimmerman is able to use his gun to shoot his attacker and end the predatory war in an instant.

If that's indeed how events went down, it should be a dream case for the defense lawyer, and a bunch of lawsuits against the prosecutor (hopefully personally against him), personally against each media reporter who libeled him, and personally against the New Black Panthers who put a bounty on his head for false arrest, false imprisonment, and malicious prosecution should follow.
