— Ace I was in the supermarket and heard this song for the first time in twenty years, and then became obsessed with it.
Yet another song Michael McDonald sings back-up on. I might have mentioned this, but Michael McDonald is part of a lot of songs. For example, here's one you couldn't possibly know about, unless, like me, you endeavored one night to search Wikipedia to find out just how important Michael McDonald was to 70s/80s pop music:
McDonald co-wrote Van Halen's Top 20 hit "I'll Wait", from their landmark 1984 album.
There's no way you knew that.

My favorite piece of '80s chick-rock trivia is this one: The "Booker T. Boffin" who was recruited into Def Leppard to make them sound famous (so they could get famous...and it worked) was a pseudonymous Thomas "She Blinded Me With" Dolby. He, as much as Mutt Lange, made their rock songs into pop songs. With Lange and without Dolby (on, e.g., "Hysteria"), I thought they sounded like a strangely Duran Duran-influenced country band. Ick.
Dolby's one hit is still a dumb novelty song, but the album it's on is pretty amazing. "The Golden Age of Wireless." Buy now. It's like a one-man-sythesizer-band XTC record (a band he wanted to join and got rebuffed).

McDonald may have been OK, but he should've stayed behind the scenes. preferably in Steely Dan. And yes, he thoroughly ruined the Doobie Brothers.
I've been on a Todd Rundgren kick lately. Apparently he's spent the past few years recreating some of his older material from the early '70's such as Todd, the very first Utopia album and A Wizard, a True Star live with a really good backup band including many surviving members of Utopia like drummer Kevin Ellman and bassist John Seigler. Seems he'd gotten them together for a fundraiser for keyboardist Moogy Klingman (who had replaced Barry Manilow as music director in Bette Midler's band), who had cancer.
Here's one to get y'all started. The original lineup of Utopia (sorta):http://tinyurl.com/chjhdlq

Dolby founded a company that did ringtones and crap for a while (beatnik) - his new album is pretty good and comes close - (but no cigar) to his first 4. He recorded it in his studio which is a converted boat or something.
Before his first album, he was with Bruce Wooley along with Downes and Horn - who did the (superior IMO) version of Video Killed the Radio Star, before Buggles (Downes and Horn) did their own version with the actual video that got all the airplay. Seek out the Bruce Wooley album English Garden, it rocks.
Dolby also had a crush on Lene Lovich, and gave her "New Toy" which was one of her hits.
Talk to me about new wave anything.
Next trivia: David Foster.

Look for Golden Age of Wireless. It's a bit of a cheat, actually. That was the American release of what was on 2 albums of stuff originally. It's like a bunch of singles all compiled on one disk - and is fantastic. The ones that didn't make the cut are good too. IMO, the American version has some better mixes than the Brit version - which last I saw is what made it to CD.
Problem with Dolby is he was always high concept - and that sort of killed him too. He got into American culture by disk 3 Aliens Ate My Buick.
Check out some of his latest:

182 Anyone seen the commercial for Ballroom jeans?
Yup.
I had already bought three pair for my hubby before they started advertising them...he loves them.
They're like the 'karate jeans' that have a diamon-shaped gusset in the crotch, which allows for extra movement.

Update to update: I need to remember that "AoS Headlines" IS the flippin' sidebar. Also, I need to drink more.

Go with a little Green Onions to start.
Follow it up with Sleepwalk by the Ventures - the one with jeff Baxter on slide guitar. After that, follow your mood and keep going. A little something on the rocks may help too...

I used to be a fan of Shonen Knife, but then I discovered Supersnazz, and it turned out there's only room for one J-punk girl band in my heart.

I do! Tight dresses, big hair, hairspray everywhere. What's not to love? Not to mention it was the Age of Reagan. The 80's were wonderful.

Ace, you admittedly like the music, films, television of the 80s. Do you find women with big hair and the clothes styles of Miami Vice attractive?
Posted by: Walkers! at November 30, 2012 06:19 PM (lus8g)
She wasn't in Miami Vice, but Night Court-era Markie Post was my favorite large-haired babe.

227 Someone mentioned it earlier, wth is Ya Mo Be There supposed to mean anyway?
A contraction for..."Yeah, I'm going to be there"?
If not that, then, no idea.
