Shhhh....Mitt Romney Is An Awesome Guy But Don't Tell Anyone
— DrewM

Let's just kept this between us ok? Whatever you do, don't tell any swing voters about this. And for God's sake, don't let the women folk know about this stuff.

[Former Romney deputy chief of staff Renee] Fry said, "From the personal side, after government, in 2008, I had a massive (noncancerous) brain tumor and nearly died. I can tell you one of the first phone calls I got was from Governor Romney."

"I was a little medicated at the time and I was telling him, it just wasn't fair. In his very reassuring voice, he said, 'Whatever I can do to help, I will be there for you,' " she said.

Lindstrom, who had young children when she served with Romney, said the governor told her: "Family comes first."

"To have a boss say, 'We'll have mistakes but they'll be our mistakes,' was very empowering," she said.

Herzfelder said: "I see this man up there that I know has this great strength, this great warmth. His actions really speak to the kind of man he is."

Gillespie recalled how Romney called her every night, for 10 straight nights, when her father was in a coma after heart surgery.

And she told one more story. The day she moved to Massachusetts, the moving company didn't get all her furniture inside the house. The governor called and asked her how things were going. She said furniture was still on the driveway.

"I'll get the boys," Romney told her.

It's great that these women are doing interviews and all but I have one question....WHERE THE HELL ARE THE DAMN ADS?

I keep hearing about all this money and the big blitz. What the hell are we waiting for?

Modesty is a commendable trait...most of the time. You don't have to be Obama and insert your imagined awesomeness into every sentence but it seems there are a few stops along the way between Mitt's let's not talk about this and Obama's narcissism.

You know what annoys me?   That this pandering is even necessary.   I hate that there are stupid women out there who need to be told, "See?  Romney's not a bad guy.  He's not a big, angry misogynist armed with a     bloody    wire coat hanger    who wipes his ass with the 19th amendment after shitting on     a copy of     Roe vs. Wade."

WAKE UP, women!   Quit acting like spoiled little princesses in your ivory tower      who must be coddled and catered to    like Daisy-fucking-Buchanan!     Actually start thinking for yourselves for a change.     Some of us have already done it, and guess what?   I'm still alive!

And something on the world spinning out of control while the White House perfects furiously spinning outrageous talking points.  Clearly spiking the football on Bin Laden was premature.  Suddenly we've got al Qaeda countries and numerous branches suspected of killing Americans.  But the Obamoids just can't stop mentioning the video.  It's too easy and neat and they fundamentally don't care about sacrificing some people and our most fundamental freedom to a howling mob.

Worst of all, that only makes it worse and increases the demands of the Islamists, clerics, and jihadis.  To advertise like the State Department did in Pakistan could be viewed, by someone with knowledge of the region, religion, and culture, as an attempt to fan the flames through provocatively displayed weakness.  Just the exact wrong thing to do.  At what point can we ascribe malice when it's the same exact mistake over and over?

Posted by: Buzzsaw at September 24, 2012 08:57 AM (tf9Ne)

62 Can't stand SCFoaMF, so...

Top Ten Reasons To Dislike Mitt Romney:

1. Drop-dead, collar-ad handsome with gracious, statesmanlike aura. Looks like every central casting's #1 choice for Commander-in-Chief.

2. Been married to ONE woman his entire life, and has been faithful to her, including through her bouts with breast cancer and MS.

3. No scandals or skeletons in his closet. (How boring is that?)

4. Can't speak in a fake, southern, "black preacher voice" when necessary.

5. Highly intelligent. Graduated cum laude from both Harvard   Law   School  and  Harvard  Business  School ...and by the way, his academic records are NOT sealed.

6. Doesn't smoke or drink alcohol, and has never done drugs, not even in the counter-culture age when he went to college. Too square for today's America ?

7. Represents an America  of "yesterday", where people believed in God, went to Church, didn't screw around, worked hard, and became a SUCCESS!

8. Has a family of five great sons....and none of them have police records or are in drug rehab. But of course, they were raised by a stay-at-home mom, and that "choice" deserves  America 's scorn.

9. Oh yes.....he's a MORMON. We need to be very afraid of that very strange religion that teaches its members to be clean-living, patriotic, fiscally conservative, charitable, self-reliant, and honest.

10. And one more point.....pundits say because of his wealth, he can't relate to ordinary Americans. I guess that's because he made that money HIMSELF.....as opposed to marrying it or inheriting it from Dad.

Apparently, he didn't understand that actually working at a job and earning your own money made you un-relatable to Americans.

My goodness, it's a bizzaro world, isn't it?

81 64 Yep, haven't seen a single ad in Texas that wasn't nationally run. One of the (million) things that I love about Texas is that it's simple to tell party affiliation on the campaign signs posted everywhere. 'Republican' is mentioned once or more on every GOP candidate's signs. 'Democrat' is NEVER listed on their opponent's signs. Posted by: Countrysquire at September 24, 2012 12:59 PM (QB3JR) Same here. Democrats dont say they are democrats. Not listed anywhere... not on signs, websites or ads. Always the same... " I will work with both parties.. I am so... moderately moderate...."

91 Television ads are kind of 20th century, Drew. Do they work? Yes, but they are expensive and not as effective as personal, one-on-one contact. When you go to your GOP headquarters, you will see people making telephone calls. They are using poll-tested and personally tailored messages to each individual gettable voters, based on deep data mining. Tremendously cost-effective and tremendously effective. Ad buys serve to lend legitimacy to a campaign. They are the digital equivalent of people standing at the corner holding candidate signs. They do not turn out the vote. In other words, don't worry about it!

110 Daily Caller, September 24: President Barack Obama has quietly cancelled a politically risky plan to meet this week with Egypt’s new Islamist president. The plan was cancelled amid a wave of riots and attacks in Arab countries that have damaged Obama’s campaign-trail claim to foreign policy competence. In 2011, Obama had “bilateral” meetings with 13 Arab and world leaders during the annual U.S. summit. This year, amid the foreign policy meltdown, his schedule shows no so-called bilats” with any foreign leaders. The cancelled visit with Morsi was mentioned in a Sept. 23 New York Times article about Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, an Islamist who now governs the Arab region’s most important country. Despite critical 2011 support from Obama for the revolt that removed Hosni Mubarak, Morsi is now demanding restrictions on U.S. free speech that is critical of Islam, demanding more U.S. support for the anti-Israeli Islamist governments in Gaza and the West Bank, and more financial aid to help the cash-strapped Egyptian government buy food and fuel for its population of 82 million people....

114 I think he's keeping this on the DL for two reasons.

The first, as Drew alludes, is modesty. For "mainstream" Christians (so I'll assume it's the same with Mormons) being a good person is not something to be bragged about.  You're just supposed to do it and expect no recognition.

The second, though, is that Mitt Romney wants this election to be about The Economy, not with which guy you'd rather have a beer.  So rather than bringing this stuff up, he keeps hammering on The Economy.

In a way, folks like Drew (yes, Drew, you're one of them) are just looking for something to gripe about.  If he were talking about this stuff, they'd be saying, "We don't care how good a guy he is, we want to know how he'll fix the economy!"

Yet as usual here comes the usual conservative questions...WHERE ARE THE DAMN ADS???  Well send some money Drew and help out instead of complaining.  I am sick and tired of this non-stop assault on Mitt no matter what he does!! God put up or shut up!!  So many people here do not give ONE DIME in money yet have an unlimited idea on what others should do with theirs...Sounds like Conservative Liberalism to me!

If you live in a swing state you will see ads and in certain areas...if you do not you will not!! And just because you do not see them does not mean they are not running!! Here in Central Florida the ads are non-stop with many from Romney and Superpacs....

135 Aside from that, I have been thinking lately about the influence (or lack thereof) of hearing personal stories about candidates from people I know or slightly know. For example, Truman North clearly loathes Bielat. I'm sure he has his reasons, but it's so personal sounding at this point that I just discount it. (Nothing against TN, that's just where I'm at about it.) A couple of weeks ago I had a several hour long conversation with a trial lawyer who is pretty rich and powerful and hangs with lots of famous people and pols. He related various stories about people, including McCain whom he hated on a personal level. And he wound up voting for Obama. So here's a smart guy, a guy who is going to vote for Romney this time, who let his hatred for McCain steer him into a dumb vote last time. I've had several people from around here who know Romney and his family well give me testimonials about him. None of those testimonials change my opinion about him -- they also don't change how I plan to vote (for Romney, obviously). So I guess to me I just don't see the value in cutting an ad about this sort of thing. I mean, I think it had its place in the convention and can help motivate the base to feel better about voting for him (and maybe working for him and giving to his campaign), but I just wonder who votes based on this sort of thing.

" As loathsome as I find Obama, I have no doubt he could roll out a similar set of stories about how wonderful he is."

Note sure I actually agree there.  The press greeted O as the second coming, they are begging for stories as banal as, 'I lifted the end of this coffee table so the hostess could retrieve her earring...'.  We'd be hearing about his heavy lifting as though it required personal sacrifice and an extension of time, money and energy.  But there's nothing.  Just vague sort of, 'He seems like a good father..." stuff.

160 You guys are slightly missing the tactic with the ads... 1) Obama is mismanaging his cash and blowing it too fast, Romney is going at an even keel of 1m per day. 2) Romneys internals likely show that Obama is wrecking himself with the recent foreign policy disaster. It's important to stop and realize how the last 10 days of newspaper headlines have gone. Each morning a bunch of swing voters (who statistically subscribe to the daily newspaper, but at a rate of 4-1 actively distrust the media) have now heard about Obama mismanagement of this thing. No spin in the world convinces people (4-1 again) that this is about an Internet video. 3) the debates haven't yet taken place.

Posted by: Hopeless at September 24, 2012 09:24 AM (cRzgp)

161 I have to go with "Romney's strategy is to keep it close until the end of the Third Quarter, and then go full out."  The Fourth Quarter begins with the first debate.  Internet, cable TV and social media have telescoped (compressed?) The campaign to the point where the September of 2008 is the October of 2012.

Romney knows what he is doing.  He really does.  Except, maybe the part about zero alcohol.  I'm supposed to watch Obama and Biden debate fully sober?  Come. On.  Everyone has their breaking point...

And if you're still going to vote for Romney, how many people have you talked to about the reasons in that choice.  This election is really more about how we, as individuals, spread the conservative message  as it is a candidate's ad buys.

173 >>>It's too bad, because we need people to know who he really is. But if he did it differently he wouldn't be who he is. Or something really deep like that.

His full Name is: Willard Mitt Romney He was Born: March 12, 1947 and is 65 years old.

His Father: George W. Romney, former Governor of the State of Michigan.

He was raised in  Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

He is Married to Ann Romney since 1969; they five children.

Education: B.A. from  Brigham Young University, J.D. and M.B.A. from  Harvard  University.

Religion: Mormon - The  Church  of  Jesus Christ  of the Latter-Day Saints.

Working Background: After high school, he spent 30 months in  France  as a Mormon missionary.

After going to both  Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School simultaneously, he passed the Michigan bar exam, but never worked as an attorney.

In 1984, he co-founded Bain Capital a private equity investment firm, one of the largest such firms in the United States .

In 1994, he ran for Senator of  Massachusetts and lost to Ted Kennedy.
*spit*

He was President and CEO of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

In 2002, he was elected Governor of the State of Massachusetts where he eliminated a 1.5 billion deficit.

Some Interesting Facts about Romney:

Bain Capital, starting with one small office supply store in  Massachusetts , turned it into Staples; now over 2,000 stores employing 90,000 people.

Bain Capital also worked to perform the same kinds of business miracles again and again, with companies like Domino's, Sealy, Brookstone, Weather Channel, Burger King, Warner Music Group, Dollarama, Home Depot Supply and many others.

He was an unpaid volunteer campaign worker for his dad's gubernatorial campaign 1 year.

He was an unpaid intern in his dad's governor's office for eight years.

He was an unpaid bishop and state president of his church for ten years.

He was an unpaid President of the Salt Lake Olympic Committee for three years.

He took no salary and was the unpaid Governor of Massachusetts for four years.

He gave his entire inheritance from his father to charity.

Mitt Romney is one of the wealthiest self-made men in our country but has given more back to its citizens in terms of money, service and time than most men.

And in 2011 Mitt Romney gave over $4 million to charity, almost 19% of his income.... Just for comparison purposes, Obama gave 1% and Joe Biden gave $300 or .0013%.

Mitt Romney is Trustworthy:

He will show us his birth certificate.

He will show us his high school and college transcripts.

He will show us his social security card.

He will show us his law degree.

He will show us his draft notice.

He will show us his medical records.

He will show us he has nothing to hide.

Mitt Romney's background, experience and trustworthiness show him to be a great leader and an excellent citizen for President of the  United States .

You may think that Romney may not be the best representative the Republicans could have selected.

At least I know what religion he is, and that he won't desecrate the flag, bow down to foreign powers, or practice fiscal irresponsibility.

I know he has the ability to turn this financial debacle that the current regime has gotten us into. We won't like all the things necessary to recover from this debt, but someone with Romney's background can do it.

But, on the minus side, he never was a "Community Organizer", never took drugs or smoked pot, never got drunk, did not associate with communists or terrorists, nor did he attend a church whose pastor called for God to damn the US .

They could lie. He doesn't need to do it because (1) our side has conceded that he is a "good husband and father" and (2) the press is carrying his water. I think Obama is a horrible excuse for a human being. I think everything he is done is motivated out of self-promotion and manipulation. But to folks on the receiving end of his nice gestures, it feels good and they would praise him for it. Moreover, I think Romney has/does do things out of good intentions and Christian charity. I don't doubt that. But we are down to limited bandwidth right now. Ads about acts of kindness performed by Mitt, particularly when they involve people from his inner circle or community, strike me as weak because they can be excused as self-serving. Better to let his wife convey that aspect of Mitt's character and let Mitt focus on how he is going to govern effectively. Just my two cents.

A few weeks ago, the topic of Mitt Romney somehow erupted in my "guild" chat in an online game I play (FFXIV).  One of the people there made the charge that Romney was just a rich a$$hole.  That pretty much sums up one of the issues that Romney has to deal with in the election - too many people think that he's a rich, out of touch guy who would probably wash his hands after coming within ten feet of someone who only had a five digit salary.  The cure for that sort of thing is to get out the stories of Romney that illustrate just how charitable the guy is, both with his money, and with his personal time.

I understand why Romney doesn't like to talk about them (it's a cultural thing, and I'm part of the same culture), but the news media has managed to get his charitable donations out in the open with the stories about Romney's just-released tax returns.  I'm actually surprised that one of the PACs hasn't made a warm-fuzzy ad that interviews someone that Romney personally helped.  Romney may not like to talk about it, but that doesn't mean that someone else can't do it.  It would also make a hilarious SNL skit - vote for Romney, and he'll personally show up on your doorstep with his five sons to help you move your stuff.  It would be better than the recent skit they had the featured Romney accidentally insulting an armless man.  I guess SNL forgot that was Biden's schtick (iirc, four years ago Biden told a guy in a wheelchair to stand up).

212 I live in Columbus and we are being overwhelmed with ads. Mostly Obama ads, though. Every Mitt ad has 2 O ads following. Our news talking heads are all slobbery when O comes to town, but we hear maybe a minute of Romney in the state. I'm thinking O is really scared because we are seeing so many of his ads. My father is an 86 yr old WWII vet and he is fired up to vote for Mitt. He swears at the tv when O shows up.

That's it.  It's those d*mn Mormons and their devilish ways telling Mitt Romney to... um... be a really good guy, in point of fact.

How dare he... um... give 30% of his income to charitable organizations?
How dare he... um... be a generally decent guy and support his employees far beyond what normal employers do.

That Devil Worshiper!

Go get your shine-box, Nazi Apologist troll.

215 >>So I don't understand this chiding I'm seeing from some folks when some of us point out we think their should be more ad buys. How many more? In Colorado springs, for example, Romney has more than doubled the number of ads McCain had in '08 over the same time period. Should he do 5 times as much? The intertubes are full of myths including the statement that Romney isn't putting out a shit load of ads.

217 He's become the background noise in everyone's life. People aren't paying attention to his ads. ------ Tuning out ads about the incumbent is one thing. Forming an impression of the challenger through his ads, especially when the challenger is getting beaten up in the press, is another. I think Mitt can wait too long to become a known, comfortable quantity to swing voters.

In that case, I don't suppose we disagree.  I'll even agree that 'I'm nice in my personal life' ads would probably be pointless.  Libs think the only good deeds are those done by compulsion and government funding.  Still, I think having that info in the atmosphere generally is good--ie., being mentioned in articles and blogs and whatnot.  It knocks down some of the Evil Corporate Tycoon cartoon which might help with the squishy undecideds...who don't read articles or blogs...ugh.  I'm chasing my tail here.

But I really don't think Obama has any of those stories. (I know, I know, that's not your point.) If he had any (ANY) they'd be inflated like a Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade blimp.

I'm tired of talking about these so-called swing voters.  I  really do think that 90% of the people who are actually planning on voting already know who's going to get their vote.   All these suck-ass polls be damned.

225 I'm tired of talking about these so-called swing voters. I really do think that 90% of the people who are actually planning on voting already know who's going to get their vote. All these suck-ass polls be damned. Exactly. So if Romney was correct (he was) that Obama has 47% of the vote locked up by being the Dem and Romney gets about 46% for being the Rep, whats the point of putting out endless ads? Your chance of meeting an undecided voter at the water cooler are less than 10%. Targeting those people with direct touch is a hell of a lot more effective than running ad number 6,594,489,309.

226 This is why I've shifted from being a lukewarm Romney supporter to a nearly rabid Romney supporter. He is a good man.

Watching the cretins and moral imbeciles in the media attack him, on behalf of the vain, hateful, corrupt idiot in the White House, has engendered in me a tremendous wrath against the entire liberal/media gang of cowardly thugs.

If they manage to swing this election by their lies, their hateful mockery, and their vicious insults, I am giving up on democracy. American constitutional democracy will no longer exist. If they manage to turn America into a Zimbabwe writ large, under the thumb of a strongman and his party apparat, then I will feel justified in abandoning democracy myself.

It will be time to start attacking those media toadies, Democrat donors, and party hacks. Personal attacks, blackmail, photos of their kids leaving school, midnight phone calls. Show them that their evil, thoughtless actions have real consequences.

If they succeed in destroying a good man who is our last chance to save America, then we have to destroy them.

227 Re:  Yard signs.  Romney campaign isn't buying them in states they either know they have already won or lost.  Our signs here (Texas) were bought by the county GOP and local women's clubs.  They were contracted to the printer by the Texas GOP County Chairmen's association.  I would suggest asking your county chairman if there are any available locally.

228 I live in Westwood, CA -- a hotbed of liberals so maybe my observations don't count -- and CA doesn't really count.  But I remember in 2008 there were lots of lawn signs for Obama.  I have seen none this year -- none.  Also other than old fading 2008 bumper stickers, I see few 2012 ones.  Maybe this shows the lower enthusiasm of Dems this year.  And I have seen more Romney bumper stickers than I ever saw for McCain.

Desperation by TFG camp equals massive amounts of ad buys which equal massive amounts of MONEY.  I can see the Romney camp just waiting for the opportune moment to release the kraaken.  Just ask Newt.  He knows the kraaken.

He said in a hush tone reminiscient of Rosebud.

Billboards.

They are commericals that never end. People talk about them to each other if they are done well.  One billboard I'd have is a list of Obama quotes for the uninformed or to give a Democrat an excuse to vote for Romney.

235 FYI- to this thing called "Jon". I noticed yesterday at WZ that the trolls came out of the woodwork like cockroaches on the poll threads. It was not stop, "Looky! Looky!" and blah, blah. Most people by now notice the trends dude. It does not work. Just saying. Bonus- you are losing. LOL! You had better be sharpening your resume because after President Romney takes over, you will have to get a job, no more freebies! _______ As to the female voters needing to hear this story about Mitt, I think we got this during the RNC. While this story is great, the one about the Boy Scout, and the young baby, those were even better. GB interviewed several people who also has wonderful things to say about Mitt. It would be great if a PAC ran ads with these people to help the touchy-feely womenzy voters, but for the rest of the female voting blocks, it seems the Security Moms have left the Obama building. The same can be said for Econ, or Kitchen Table Moms. Anti-Obamacare Moms made up their minds long ago. So, I have no idea which female groups other than the 18-24 group who supports Dear Leader. Here is another thing, with our without ads touting "he cares about real people", just viewing the two candidates is a dead give away. There is no warmth coming from Evil Overlord. His body language with that tilting of the head, the nose up, and the inability to speak from his heart about our military says it all. People want to go on and on about how Mitt does not connect, but I disagree. Look at how he acts with Ann. Does Obama act that way with Mooch? I do not think so. Mitt was really touched by Paul Ryan's first outing after being named VP. Mitt does seem to connect with those coming out to hear him. Ads might help, they certainly could not hurt, but most of the womenzes here do not believe it is necessary. Of course we were ABO going way back to January of 2009. LOL!

236 BTW the Romney campaign is up with the stories of these women on the website and a blog.  They are going on the road to speak for Romney.  They will get earned media in local newscasts and newspapers, which will be better than TV ads that people turn off or skip on their DVR.

Posted by: rockmom at September 24, 2012 10:44 AM (NYnoe)

237 +1 to Rockmom I think that is the best idea. People all over tv saying they are fed up with the ads, and not wanting to hear them. The only place I might run a PAC ad with these women in them would be PA since they seem to be so up and down in these polls. Maybe CO as well.

It's axiomatic that the more you dig into a politician's life, the more dirt you dig up.  But as you dig into this guy's life, it just makes you look at your own life, and ask, "Why can't I be more like that?"

Maybe he's not really a politician, or something.

Seriously, dudes!  On the one hand, we have a president whose most remarkable characteristic is his lack of accomplishment.  Even the two book he wrote were ghost-written, and of his three major accomplishments in office two were riding Bush's coattails (Iraq, which involved his breaking a campaign promise, and OBL) and the other (ObamaCare) is such an unmitigated disaster that he doesn't exactly brag about it, and he lost the House over it.

On the other hand, the challenger has legendary accomplishments with business, non-profits, and government alike. A turnaround expert at the time we need one the most.  Plus, one hell of a human being.

Why is this even close?  It can only be the media, which is NOT BIASED.  It is WAY beyond bias - it is at full-blown propaganda mode, up to and including outright slander.

It is hard to get through the wall of lies that started right after 2008.  And much of it from our own side.  Much of it from Republicans, like Erick Ericksen and Michelle Malkin.

When "Republicans" aren't for Romney... the pundants, what do they think will happen?   The media campaign to drive up his negatives works.  The public isn't going to believe his enemies, but when his friends say the same or similar stuff... then they believe it all.

We are being beaten by our own side.  That undercover tape wasn't taken by a Democrat, and a Democrat didn't give it to Jimmy Carter's grandson.  Republican's did this to Romney.  One of the Anybody But Romney's who held a grudge...

I think Romney will win.  Because he is the best there is, the best human being that has ever run.

One article I read today pointed out that Romney has given at least 50 million dollars to charity over the past 20 years.

What kind of man gives money away like that?  This fact alone should make people think.

That 4 million isn't a one time thing.  It is a way of life.  It is the mark of a truly exceptional human being.  And he wants to use his skill fixing our government.

And he is met with anger from both sides.

240 ..but you see, this is the problem...mitt doesn't tell anyone about who he really is.. it's like he thinks he's being noble or something... instead, he's just nobley losing the election to a belicose wannabe imposter who is more then happy to brag brag and even make stuff up... but what does romney do? oh...nothing. he's fucking wimp who is going to lose this election for the good people of the u.s. out of some stupid middle class frat boy version of good manners...and taking the so-called "higher road" of not "dignifying" the lies with a response... it's ridiculous... and it is EXACTLY what i thought mitt would do...

...lose the election because he's too god damned flippin NICE... thanks, mitt, no really, thanks A LOT...on behalf of generations of young people that will have to suffer through the mess that is gong to be created by this psychopath in the white house...thanks...

241 27 Colorado, NV, VA, Iowa, NH report! Report!!

I went to the Pueblo ralley after my night shift.  Lots of folks, so many that I was worried if all the Republicans were here on a Monday morn, who was running Pueblo!?  Two protesters.  Spoke to one who said Romney was a robot and we need to get rid of corporations.  This is why I fear Obama winning, it means the majority of Americans can now participate in Special Olympics.

Mitt gives a good stump speech, better than McLame according to those who attended  McLame rallies in 08.
