— Ace Karl argues he should at Hot Air, suggesting that the GOP might have to illustrate to the public how massive our spending is by actually ratcheting up taxes to finance all this spending.
At the moment, the public is not actually confronted with the cost of the expanding government because we're currently borrowing from China to pay for it (and will do so, until China realizes we can't cover our debts, in which case we're going to try some hyperinflation (which, of course, has always worked in the past)).

That's how things have been going for a while, I think. I saw some number showing that the Fed owned an absurdly high percentage of all duration on our outstanding bonds.

As to China, they don't buy our debt any more, the Fed thinks it's clever by monetizing monthly issuance. The problem (aside from inflation) is there's $16 trillion of paper already floating around that could depreciate in a hurry and beyond the Fed's influence.

China quit loaning us money 2 years ago and started selling our bonds when we started monetizing the debt. Currently the treasury issues bonds and the fed buys them. IOW we are simply printing money.

I just love this Heinlein quote:
“Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded -- here and there, now and then -- are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as 'bad luck.'”

105...I think we had only 1 ACE blogger that actually predicted a JEF win, the rest, Romney, hands down. (I do not mean commenters, the offical ACE blog/co-blogger tally, along with the supporting data). Was it Gabriel? Or, Maetenloch? that was correct.
It was Gabriel.
None of us knew how bad the situation was.
Some of us were dismayed at the way Romney wasn't fighting against Barky's Lies.
But we were hopeful that he would win anyway.
I pretty much kept my mouth shut about it and hoped for the best.
Again, look a the chart I linked in the last post. And, do read the Coulter piece, for the stats, alone.
And, finally, listen to Michelle:
Michelle Malkin: The right needs to stop navel gazing and start fighting the leftist radicalization of America
http://tinyurl.com/cgugp8z
The charts and graphs will be replaced with other charts and graphs later.
Bottom line...it was a clusterfuck.
Romney brought a silk hanky to a knife fight.
Coulter and Malkin were a part of the clusterfuck that happened in the primaries...by not screaming about the absurdity of having so many dumbass debates.
They each had their own agenda....and were not very helpful.

In the context of maintaining current spending levels, he's right.
Good luck convincing voters of that though. They'll continue to believe that we only need to tax the rich more, because that's what they want to believe.

Here's one idea. Can we stop calling them the GOP? I'm guilty of it myself, but it's a moniker that has always, ALWAYS annoyed me. "Grand Ole Party?" By whose reckoning? It gives them an air of inevitability, as if to say, "We've been here a long time, sonny, and we're not going anywhere anytime soon." Fuck that.
How about DOP? "Dead Ole Party."

No more kid-glove, Queensbury, hand-wringing, white spats, limp-wristed, piss-stained, mewling, squishy shoes, mincing, church mouse, wall flower, hail fellow, Harvard rules, genteel, loser shit.
IF the GOP doesn't beg, borrow, or steal some gonads, they deserve to be a footnote.

Christina Hendricks talks about whiskey and her preferences
D: I have to ask, what would Joan's Johnnie Walker drink of choice be?
C: I think she would have a Manhattan. First of all, she lives in Manhattan. She's very spirited, very patriotic. So I think she would probably have a Manhattan. She'd probably like the presentation, as well.
D: What impression would you get from a man who orders Johnnie Walker at the bar?
C: It's sexy, and it's confident, and it's also very classic. Like I said, I like the way it looks. I like the caramel color. I like the smell. I just like that it is what it is — you're not necessarily mixing it with a bunch of other things to change the flavor. You are really just enjoying the flavor of the drink, and I think that is a confident choice.
D: And tell me, who would your favourite Moron be?
C: Well that's easy! It has to be EC. Even just his alias on the blog tells me that he's a simple, straightforward kind of man. It's just two letters, and not an alias that's vague or obtuse or trying to look like he's an intellectual. I just like that about him. I think I want to have his children too.

And really that says it all, doesn't it? I try to explain this to people all the time, that the Democrat party thinks people are too stupid to do anything for themselves. Somehow, I am reminded of that scene in "Gone With the Wind", where Scarlett and Mammy are in Atlanta and in the background are some free blacks and white men telling them how to vote. If they vote like "their friends" vote, they will be awarded "forty acres and a mule". And that's how blacks have stayed on the plantation.

That's odd, because he brought a garrote to the primaries. That stunt his supporters pulled in Virginia is what won the primary for him.
Apparently the vicious stuff is only used on his conservative opponents.

If you have some sort of magic beans that can get the electorate to stop voting for free goodies that doesn't involve a serious dose of reality I'm all ears. If we keep fighting the same way we have been the last 100 years, we are going to continue to lose the same way, little by little, until we have lost everything. We can die a death of a thousand lashes... that is an option. I'd rather go the other route.

I feel for ya dude, but the problem is, we all share the same money. It is the money that is going to burn, so it won't make any difference which state it is in when it starts.
It's been smoldering for several years now. Haven't you noticed the rising prices of everything?

144 I noticed Boehner's purge of conservative chairman, and DeMint quitting.
That's interesting, because there weren't any Chairmen purged, just three freshmen.
Gotta keep beating that strawman, I guess.

Farms deal in commodities. The money fluctuates with the CPI.
I'm in the oil business, inflation doesn't hurt nearly as much.

The people have spoken.
They want higher taxes, but only on people richer than themselves.
They also want lower spending, but only if there's no chance of affecting them personally. And don't dare touch their sacred cows of education, the EPA, NASA, welfare, food stamps, agriculture subsidies, green energy funding, Medicare, or Social Security.
Foreign aid. That's the ticket. Just cut that, tax the rich more, and all our problems are solved.

percentage of gdp is a dumb way to measure the amount of taxes we pay. pretty much (90% or better) all federal taxes are taxes on income one way or another. the estate tax isnt, but income, payroll, and even excise taxes hit income by directly taking from income or by inflating prices on things income is used to buy.
IIRC, the aggregate adjusted gross income of the us -- the actual money people earned to spwnd on things they wanted -- was about $6 trillion in 2010. the federal govt taxed away over a third of that.
they spent about 60% of it. that's your problem right there.

Factually inaccurate. Rhetorically, it may or may not be worth the distinction. But China is all done with our debt.
These days we lend money to ourselves. Shit you not - we lend ourselves money on paper.
Posted by: entropy at December 06, 2012 12:12 PM (TULs6)
Somewhere between 70-90% of all new debt is being bought by the Fed. Privately held US debt, which includes countries like China, is around $11 trillion. The other $5 trillion is held by 'intragovernment agencies'. It is this last category which is growing by leaps and bounds.
The bottom 10% of 'taxpayers' pay a negative 13.4% tax rate. The next from bottom 10% of 'taxpayers' pay a negative 5.4% rate. This is due, of course, to the EIC.
I can provide links to any of these facts, if anyone actually gives a shit.

Looks like Gov. Snyder and the GOP legislature are poised to make Michigan a Right To Work state.
THIS is how it's done.
That's the GOP legislature in MI. Snyder is 'going along' because at the moment he's tied up and gagged and 3 people are sitting on him.
If there was absolutely anything he could do to stop them (without blowing any chance of reelection ever) he would.

Okay, I'm getting so sicjk of this that I could scream. You know who else has $500,00 in "wealth"? Widows with 4 kids whose husbands tried to make sure they woukdn't be a burden to the rest of society, that's who.
I'm not 40 yet and that damn money was supposed to last my entire life with some left over for the kids. Well, between TFG's destruction of investment options, the sky-rocketing tax on dividends and inflation that is increasing prices that's already not going to happen, but I'm getting very sick of people on "my" side encouraging the government to turn their greedy eyes towards my only chance at reasonable self-sufficiency. Honestly, I figure it's only a matter of time until a wealth tax happens anyway, but I'd appreciate it if so-called conservatives weren't volunteereing to give them *my* money.

Exactly. The money meant to support me for the next 40 years will run out in 15-20 at current inflationary rates and it's not going to be any easier for a 55 year old woman to find a job then than it is for a 38 year old to find one now. I realize that a lot of this is inevitable, but would really appreciate it if those trying to send the financial wolfpack my way weren't so damn smug about theri reasonableness in doing so.
