Romney is a methodical, numbers and results-driven guy.  He's spent 6+ years and hundreds of millions of dollars to formulate a plan to win this thing. 

I'm confident that they have game-planned an almost-incomprehensible number of scenarios for the last 50 days.  Columnists, TV news, and bloggers have to fill content every day or readers and ad dollars leave. This leads to some of the most counter-factual and stupid crap being written and called "analysis."  Grain of salt is an understatement of how you need to regard most of it.

I saw that PA poll last Friday. The Stinquirer also has Zero up in NJ by 14. I couldn't find the partisan splits anywhere.

I was on the "Finally, this is the year for PA!!" bandwagon. I still think Romney can pull it out depending on the voter ID ruling by the PA Supremes. But I got a bad vibe from the hearing last week.

There isn't nearly as much enthusiasm for Zero in the city as in 2008, but I can't get a gauge on what, if any, support Romney has. Those of us who are going to vote for him don't dare put bumper stickers or window signs up (most of us in the city don't have front yards). I haven't been out to the 'burbs in awhile so I don't know how it looks out there. I hardly watch network TV so I don't see any commercials by either side. I'm still getting fundraising phone calls (on my cell, no less) from the Romney people, if that means anything.

i can tell a man raised by a woman and a man raised by a father (who was raised by men) just by the sound of his voice, and his speech patterns... I had not realized this bugged me, until my Marine and i hooked up. He would apologize for how rough he sounded and i couldn't help but laugh... I liked listening to a man talk like a (little bit rough) man better.

The ex working in Hollywood, and all the idiom that went with it was so brittle, whiny and counterfit, even when they were swearing, that the marine barking every once in a while at least sounded manly and honest.

This has been a discussion around my house for the last ten years, although from a slightly different point of view.

I grew up on a farm, I'm an engineer (BSME, MSIE, not a sanitation engineer), and I'm  former military (USN Submarines, Engineer Qualified).  I look at how hard engineers work and compare it to how hard my friends in finance work vs. how much each group gets paid.  The math simply doesn't work!

I don't necessarily consider unemployment benefits to be a taker.  That is insurance paid for by your employer on your behalf.  Now if you are one of those that refuses to take employment because its not up to your standards and believe the length of time for benefits should pratically be unlimited, then yes you're a taker.

About 10 years ago a friend and I said something to a drunk kid in his 20's that he aparently didn't like.  He stormed off, drunkenly muttering, then reappeared 10 minutes later with his angry girlfriend in tow.  She proceeded to harangue us about being bad people, tell us what a wonderful, sensitive guy he is, and generally bitch-shame us into submission.  It took both of us a week to stop laughing.  That's the modern male response ?  I'm going to go get my girlfriend ?

 

One other observation - notice how many "kick-ass-chick" movies we've seen since the 1990's ?   Starting with the "Buffy" movie, then we get TV shows, the Ultraviolets, Dominos,  Resident Evils, Sucker Punch - I can't begin to list them all. 

 

I think it has a lot to do with single-mommy households and weak (or absent) father figures.  Women are the "strong horses" of the last few generations.

The problem is not women voting, but that single parenthood has made so many dependent on Uncle Sam. Dependent people vote democrat and single mothers fit that bill.

I don't know about the causes but I saw an end of the world as we know it special on some network, Discovery I think it was.  They interview people as to how they would survive after a global or even national catasrophe.  There were the ususal I will move into the hinterlands and grow my own food, build a cabin, etc. types.  There were also those who admitted they were clueless as to any abilities to do this, so they would use violence and steal what they needed, sell it,  and kill off the others.  Yes, they actually admitted this, which they rationalized as," survival of the fittest baby," to quote one of the idiots. When it was pointed out that sooner or later there would be nothing left to steal, they were surprised and didn't know what to do.

233 I'm a suburbanite Gen-Xer who grew up with Atari and Apple-IIe. But I'm now a parent, and the new video games totally leave me cold. Of course my kids like playing Wii or DS, but we're trying to keep them involved in the real world too. My 12YO spent the weekend at Girl Scout camp learning to tie knots and hiking with her friends. And I spent the weekend trying to fix my car. The damned power window failed with the window down! But the part is only $100, and I can do the work, so why not? Sure, I killed half of our landscaping this summer through neglect. And I'd probably starve to death if I were forced to grow my own food. But there are other things that I can do. And I'm a cheap enough bastard to try to do them. No car payments since '02! I've fixed some of my kids' stuff too, so hopefully they are absorbing the fact that you don't always have to just throw it away and buy a new one.

The idea of the emasculated American reminds me of something I have noticed (or at least has drawn my attention the last few years).  It seems much more common for a young man to be in the passenger seat of a car with a woman driving.  "Back in my day"...I know.  But really, about the only excuse for this would have been the guy was too drunk, injured, or otherwise incapacitated, and so the girl had to drive.  Anybody have any stats to back this up?

 

The guy has become the pampered, ornamental feature of the modern relationship, in which the girl brings the money, car, and any shred of responsibility.  While this might seem superficially attractive to the guy, it's eventually ennervating.  There's only so much X-box you can play before you realize, if you have this much time for video games and music, then you really aren't that essential to anything real.  Just another symptom of the death of the culture of the West.

Well in fairness I know a few young guys who let their wives or girl friends drive for many reasons...they can drink, they can be on their cells/blackberries/etc., or like my kid who is on the road for work so he likes the break.

It is "Cougaring" of our young men. A friend of MrsCaniac decided a few years ago that the "Cougar" lifestyle was going to be for her. She gets her "Cub", and off they go. I've been thinking about this subject for a while.  Earlier this year I had some time to do some genealogy.  Looking at census report after census report, I was struck by how many people had to actually work - physical labor - in the 1800's.  Most of my ancestors arrived here before the Revolutionary War, yet they were still farmers, sailors, fishermen, sailmakers, grocers, laborers, etc in the 19th century.  It seems kind of obvious now, but I was astounded to think about their lives and realize how physically hard my ancestors had to work virtually all their lives.

I think we've lost something when we fail to provide opportunities for hard work to boys and men today.

My car, though a "standard" four-door sedan, is a little too small for the family of four.  Sure, it can get us where we need to go if needed, but the family as a whole prefers Mrs. Reason's assigned vehicle, the Suburban.

 

As it is Mrs. Reason's assigned vehicle, Mrs. Reason usually drives it, even when I am one of the passengers.

 

I am OK with this,  because it means that the Passenger -> Driver Correction Chatter is reduced to near-zero.

 

My father-in-law is, by all accounts, a man's man.  Dude knows how to fix everything in, on, and under the house, and the only thing that stops him from building everything he needs is sheer age.  He is a man's man, and a guy that I look up to literally as a second father.    Whenever he and his wife go anywhere, he lets her drive too.  And he openly admits that it is for  precisely the same reason that I  give above.

 

Part of being a man is problem-solving.   Sometimes the best solution to a problem  is simply to remove yourself  from an unnecessary  spotlight.
