Sources: Gingrich To Suspend Campaign Next Tuesday
— Ace

Sources suggested Gingrich might drop out if he failed to win or come in a close second in Delaware. He didn't (56% Romney, 27% Gingrich), so now sources say he's going to exit.

The former House speaker will "more than likely" endorse Mitt Romney when he makes his announcement to either suspend or end the campaign, a source said.

This seems gratuitous:

Gingrich's exit is a stark turnaround from his public posture just a few months back, when in December he confidently declared following his rise in national polls that he's "going to be the nominee."

That's like saying Tom Brady lied when he said he'd win the Super Bowl. "This score represents a stark flip-flop from Tom Brady's previous 'I intend to win the game' position."

Tom Brady

He lies like The Devil.

7 I'm back to feeling pity for Gingrich.  He has torched himself to the ground by continuing in a futile campaign.  Now he's broke, with millions in debt and none of his old gigs (consulting, Fox) to fall back on.

Then I remember the Bain Capital attacks from South Carolina and Florida, and I think "fuck him."

But eh, time to let bygones be bygones.

Posted by: Jeff B. at April 25, 2012 08:22 AM (irCrF)

8 That's like saying Tom Brady lied when he said he'd win the Super Bowl.

It is a little different, in that Gingrich was asked specifically about staying in even if he wasn't gaining traction and he'd said yes.  Now he's saying, "well... no."  So it is a reversal.

It's a completely rational and expected reversal- but still a reversal.

I do agree it's gratuitous, though: I'm trying to figure out what the point of that statement is, other than just another dig at Gingrich.

Um...no he won't.  Have you been keeping up at the mini-war Newt has waged against Fox during the waning stages of his campaign?  Roger Ailes literally said in public that Newt wasn't going to be getting his old gig back.

And seriously, who is going to give a crap about Newt's book now?  He has done massive damage to his public standing with the GOP folks who used to think of him as an interesting public intellectual.

Newt's not stupid, so I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that, three years from now, he's managed to climb his way back up above ground.  But he's starting from behind after this campaign.

So someone better versed in party politics explain this to me.  If Newt endorses Romney, do his 150 or so delegates get transferred accordingly?

Secondly, if we can get Santorium to endorse would that push enough delegates to Romney to force Ron Paul out of his "delegate hunting" craziness?

70 -

I'm going to guess (and it's only a guess) there are enough delegates that haven't yet been allocated that if it's essentially Mitt running unopposed (my time on the RP bandwagon, so short) he'll gather enough between now and convention time that he won't need anybody else's.

I think that's what they meant when they suggested it was darned near impossible to have a brokered convention.

Posted by: BurtTC at April 25, 2012 09:02 AM (TOk1P)

70 @70 Normallly the delegates are permanently fixed to the candidates even if they dropped out. At the convention, the delegates are not obligated anymore to stick with their candidate so thus they are released to choose who they want. That's the way I heard it.

I supsect as much too, I'd just like to change "air of inevitablity" to "Over" at this point (officially).  Then I don't have to listen to Ron Paul anymore. (I'm fine with much of his domestic stuff, but his foreign policy is wack, and he doesn't actually have any plans to accomplish most of it.  "End the Fed" sounds awesome, but I want to see a freaken plan for it.)

Posted by: tsrblke at April 25, 2012 09:05 AM (22rSN)

Ron Paul appeals to the college age demo that Barky O'DogEater is going after with his free college loans BS.  Get behind some of Paul's good ideas, such as bashing the fed, and give that demo a reason to pay attention to Mitt.

Posted by: Boots at April 25, 2012 09:06 AM (neKzn)

73

@Kaitian

My understanding (and I may be wrong) is that the canidates themselves can unbind delegates and/or bind them to someone else pre-convention.  Also various states/localities differ on the binding (and how many rounds of voting such binding holds.)

74

Posted by: Boots at April 25, 2012 01:06 PM (neKzn)

I don't think the college demographic likes "End the fed" as much as they like "legalize drugs" and "End the wars" (which Obama ran on, won and then abandoned, which is why they're flocking to the only canidate embracing the end the war position.)
