Well Obama says if you read the transcript of the first debate, he beat Romney. So I'm guessing that ego is still pretty inflated.

Legendary Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter died in his home Sunday morning from complications of non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, according to a statement released by his family. He was 82.
Specter, 82, announced in 2005 that he had Hodgkin's disease, for which he underwent chemotherapy. He was treated again in 2008, after the disease returned. He was again hospitalized in August to deal with the disease.
Specter rose to prominence in the 1960s as an aggressive Philadelphia district attorney and as an assistant counsel to the Warren Commission, developing the single-bullet theory that posited just one bullet struck both President Kennedy and Texas Gov. John Connally — an assumption critical to the argument that presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. The theory remains controversial and was the focus of Oliver Stone's 1991 movie "JFK."

This is why the jump matters: getting astronauts back onto Earth is damn dangerous. This jump shows it is possible to get astronauts from space onto Earth without all that surrounding crap.
So I'm thinking - don't land the next Shuttle or manned probe or lunar-lander. Put it into dock in a low-orbit space-station. And then just - kick them out.
It should be cheaper and safer, and if there is a mistake (G-d forbid) it doesn't kill over seven people at one time.

None of this "don't speak ill of the dead" crap. Hell, that's the best time cause they can't sue you from the grave.
Arlen Spector this was your life and you were pretty much a big fucking asshole during most of it. (at least your public persona that I am aware of). maybe you were nice to your dogs and kids. (maybe not, he named one of his boys Shanin. (gheeeyyy)
This is for all the times you pontificated and lorded it over others who knew better than you but you had the seniority. This is for the fucking single bullet theory, which enshrined you in the dumbass hall of fame.
This is for all the times you shafted your supposed fellow Republicans. This is for your last minute flip to Democrat so you could keep your seat and your perks.
I'm not GLAD your dead but I'm not SAD your dead.
Say Hello to Fat Teddy while you're waiting in line for your turn on the end of Satan's barbed cock.

Next flight they're going to take along a celebrity of Germanic descent to make...yep, a Germanic Descent. The Hoff...
The Hoff won't even know they're on the edge of space til Felix depressurizes the capsule, and boots the Hoff out the door. A pressure-crumpled Budweiser tallboy will be all that's left of the Hoff on camera when the Hoff makes his descent.
Sadly for the Hoff, he will have allowed Kid Rock and the Kardashians to pack his chute and do his equipment checks. His chute will turn out to be a wrinkled leather mini-skirt and his O2 supply will be pressurized helium. His high pitched death scream will be comedy gold.
The closing scene will be his impacting a the roof of a car in LA, taking Lindsay Lohan out with his landing.
Must see TV...

It worked out better this way anyway, as Joe Kittinger, who held the record from his jump from around 102,000 feet in 1960, was helping this mission and thus was able to keep one record for the longest freefall.

Freefall == weightlessness, in terms of the effects on an object. So the freefall record belongs to whatever that Russian guy's name was who got stuck in Mir for longest. (I think)

Slower/restricted motion and visibility in that clumsy suit. If there's a problem, you want time to deal with it.
That 9-cell elliptical that looked kinda small (even if it was ZP) has me baffled. You can put those into a spin on opening with small errors in body position. 7-cells rectangular is almost failsafe.
Posted by: @PurpAv at October 14, 2012 11:05 AM (U6/KF)
166 I am wondering why he opened so high. Standard opening height is 3000 feet, & he opened at 6-7000. That's about 20 secs of freefall he lost, and so he didn't break the longest freefall record.
Posted by: West at October 14, 2012 03:00 PM (5pHWa)

Arlen Specter was the consumate shameless deal-maker.
Reagan campaigned for him...lending him some valuable credibility, since Reagan had also switched from Democrat to Republican.
But then, like a worm...Specter stabbed Reagan in the back, by voting against Robert Bork.

Small motions with your hands, legs, hips can induce spins, rolls, back/front flips. All that shit that's attached to a torso acts like control surfaces on an airplane.
Even something as minor as clenching one fist and opening the other palm flat fingers spread will impart a low rotation spin.

We have all mail in voting here in Washington. They just manufacture votes until they win. People in King County vote to raise gasoline and sales taxes on a regular basis. They are worse than California. See 2004 Rossi Vs. Gregoire. My county is nearly 1/3 of the state's vote and votes 70-30 Communist. The rest of the state is either tied or a Red state. We will probably be the first state to pass gay marriage and pot initiatives by popular voting here. If China nukes us, please start with Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia.

Not a big deal unless the rotation rate is so fast you blackout. If I heard correctly, there was some sort of accelerometer that would have fired a drogue out if that happened.
Once you get down to where there's a few more air molecules, your control naturally returns.
The first F-104 Starfighters that did high altitude tests experienced the same thing - the engine could punch them up there, but the control surfaces were ineffective and they tumbled for a while on the way back down. After a bit, we fitted those experimental F-104's with RCS maneuver jets like the Shuttle had and the pilot could aim them at altitude with the RCS system.
The F-104 wasn't a particularly pilot friendly design when it was tumbling and spinning. The recovery procedure was to eject and recovery your body and forget the plane. It was getting expensive splattering them all over the desert.

Just got back from the grocery store. I was behind a little girl (9 years old or so) who was buying potato chips and soda with a food stamp EBT card. Pisses me off--even when I was a grocery checker (and a liberal at that time), I'd make the kid go get a parent. Back then, it was a scam--you could get change for less than a dollar, so the adult would send the kid in several times to buy like one piece of Brach's candy with a dollar food stamp until they had enough cash for liquor or cigarettes. Don't know what the current scam is with the EBT cards, but I saw the adults in the parking lot take the loot from the kid and send her back for more.
If we have to give food subsidies to people, it should be like WIC--you only get to get certain kinds of food, and they're real food. Oppressive? Yes. If you want more government, don't be surprised when you get a lot of it.

That is why I hate early voting. It gives the democrats too much time to commit fraud. The state implemented last year I believe a confirmation that your ballot was received and tabulated, but I wish that they would tell you what you voted for.
We did away will polling places to "save money" so that we could spend it on illegal aliens and welfare queens. You know how well that always works out. We now have around a 3 billion dollar deficit and the teachers are complaining that they won't get a cost of living increase of 3% this year or last or whatever. They still have platinum health coverage and other benefits. Government workers in this state are entitled asshole dickfaces.

They got the idea from Oregon, we started it in the 90s. I hate it. I loved going to the voting booth in person, it made me feel patriotic and part of the nation. Fraud isn't just the half of it; imagine living in a house with some psychotic radical leftist. We already have read news stories of a woman who threw her husband's absentee ballot away because he was voting Republican (federal crime but whatever). Imagine a house with some super leftist parent demanding everyone vote the "correct way" or filling out ballots. A house with a college kid who destroys everyone's ballot who votes the wrong way. The problems are overwhelming, not the least of which the cost of a stamp to vote.
Its a Democrat dream, and ever since its happened, Oregon has lost Republicans in office to the point less than a dozen in the state legislature are anything but Democrats. We haven't had a Republican governor for decades, and the state used to be more GOP than not.
Every time a Republican comes close to winning they count the Portland metro area votes and get just enough to tip it over into a Democrat win. Its happened twice in the governor's election.
They don't even have to go find ballots in car trunks and hotel rooms with this system.

From the Examiner:
Today the confusion only worsened yet again when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters that her agency was not the source of misinformation concerning the attacks, charging instead that the White House was the source of the false mantra that the murders were spurred by an anti-Muslim film made in the United States.
Clinton told reporters that when Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, made her rounds on every Sunday morning news show to claim the film motivated the attacks, the information had been fed to her by the White House and not the intelligence community in the State Department or the CIA.

Major midwestern state college campuses are the only places Ogabe can draw people. They are pretty much captive audiences. If there isn't a football game happening, the only other thing they have to do is cow-tipping.
...and if the rally is in the afternoon, they're not drunk enough yet to bother the bovine, so they may as well try to cop a feel of the ass in front of them while pressed in a crowd

watching the video, too, it appears felix went in to a pretty severe spin/tumble mode...he recovered very well, but it (to me) looked pretty dicey for a bit...(not that i know anything other then being a flight test engineer for a long time...) watch the reaction of the visitors....felix kind of lost it in the "no air" environ....tbe, i say.... but he recovered and came home with style!

I don't take crowd estimates very seriously unless they have a wide shot or overhead view of the event. They stated that another Wisconsin event had over 18,000 people there in an arena that holds only 5,000 people. I looked at the pictures there and there was ROOM TO SPARE for the Obama event.
I found that the media was getting their estimates from Tom FREAKING Barret who ran against Walker for Governor in the recall.

I saw a segment on some news show about how states are cleaning up the voter rolls and it made me wonder where my card was. I found it and everything's kosher, but it wouldn't hurt to make sure our side is prepared.
Also, anyone see Chris Wallace interviewing Axeldorf? He got pretty worked up, pissed when Axe said we should calm down and wait for the investigation, etc. I have to hand it to Axe though, he's pretty smooth. Full of BS, but he was prepared with answers for all of Chris's questions, some of which were pretty pointed.
I'm glad to see the press applying some pressure, hopefully the story in all its ugliness will break through enough for some tough questions directed at O in this week's debate. Best of all would be if a town hall citizen shows through their questions and body language that they're not buying O's lies.

So...no matter what the Questions are, Barky is going to attack Mitt about Bain Capital?
Heh.
I hope he does.
Romney can easily parlay that into talking about Jobs, Jobs, Jobs....and how Barky has been demonizing the Job Creators.
If Barky mentions "shipping jobs overseas"...
I hope Mitt brings up how Jeffry Imelt, Barky's Jobs Czar, has been shipping thousands of jobs to China.....*while* acting as Jobs Czar.

To be that far up, in such a tiny little capsule...then jumping.
Brass balls.

If Romney disproves the "He's an evil frightening religious nut who loves to fire people and is a greedy rich kid" image, he wins, no matter how the debate plays out.

I've had 3 parachute malfunctions and reserve rides over the years, all below 4,000'. When the SHTF, you gotta do everything right, and do it fast. That suit added a lot of complexity to his malfunction emergency procedures.
I would guess he also had what's called an AAD device hooked to the reserve. AAD's sense speed and altitude by sampling air pressures and attempt to deploy the reserve if you bust through a preset altitude going too fast (i.e. incapacitated and didn't get anything out, or had a high speed malfunction and didn't pull reserve).
I had an AAD, they were cheap insurance.

543 Maybe if it were me up in that suit jumping out I'd have a different perspective, but really, after a certain point the height is irrelevant. You're street pizza if your chute doesn't work at 1000 feet just like 100,000 feet.
Yeah, but when you're up that high...in a capsule that's headed towards the edge of the stratosphere...
Another concern is the door.
If the door doesn't open...you're headed for outer space.
No gravity.
No 911.
Say goodbye.

Things can/do go sideways in a hard vacuum though. Valves mysteriously stick, seals fail, metals can curiously weld themselves together at the molecular level. Real space is a nasty environment.

I would imagine that Felix was equipped with one of those?
One would hope.
What I'm marveling at, in this...is that everything went off without a hitch.
Sometimes a malfunction can happen, no matter how well everything was prepped and planned for.
And knowing that, this guy went for it anyway.

The capsule had a "cut-away" device...that cut it loose from the balloon automatically, at a certain altitude.
[The balloon kept going up, I guess.]
They mentioned this, on the vid above.

I should post some pics of the parachute I had on one of my reserve rides. On deployment, it literally blew to shreds. Every panel in the thing had ripped somewhere...even stabilizers and ribs.
I looked up and realized in about 1/2 sec that flapping mess of rags wasn't gonna get any better and went to Plan B.
Turned out the fabric mill made some processing change in the fabric the mfg used and didn't tell them. So chutes made with that batch of bad fabric were all ticking time bombs.
That cost me a bottle of good scotch. You always stroke the rigger who packed your reserve and saved your worthless ass with a bottle of scotch.

Kristoff is the guy...who interviewed Barky in March of 2007...
That was the interview where Barky recited the Shahada, from memory, in a "perfect Arabic accent".
And then went on to proclaim that "the prettiest sound in the world, is the muslim call to prayer".
Or he may have said that first...then recited the Shahada.
Either way...Kristoff is the guy who did that interview, and saw nothing wrong with that picture.

Well ... it might not have been "from memory". Barky might well have been reading the shahada off of his ring TOTUS
Heh. Good one, PrimOrd².
He probably had it on, too.
I still think that that interview was Barky's way of telegraphing to all those Imams out there..."I'm still one of you."
So that he wouldn't have to be worrying about some fatwah against him...since, you know, that's what they do when someone tries to leave.

There's no requirement that a tandem be done first, its just a way for people to get in the air with minimal training.
If you went straight to a static line or AFF program, there's usually a full days worth of ground school before the 1st jump.
The AFF progression has instructor(s) in the air right next to you, but you're not strapped to them. Static line is the old school way
Posted by: @PurpAv at October 14, 2012 02:53 PM (U6/KF)
No doubt. Remember who Barky gave his first Precedential TV interview to (studiously ignored by the MFM). Al Arabiya.
I'd forgotten about that.
Yeah. That was special, wasn't it.
Liberals seem to think that appeasement, butt-kissing and have a muslim-friendly president will keep us safe.
Wrong.
Muslims aren't squeamish about killing other muslims....they kill more other muslims than any other kind of people.
In fact...having someone they might consider 'one of them', is worse.
Because then they look at it as "If you're one of us, then you should be doing more for us!"

Not a survivable scenario. If you tangle with another jumper at low altitude like that you suck it up and ride that fucked up configuration down just the way it is if there's any fabric overhead at all.
If you had a couple hundred feet, you might consider tossing your reserve out too to get a little more fabric overhead. Two chutes out is usually a stable configuration...unless they downplane, which is bad

Has this been covered yet?
This jump was from 24 miles. The low point of an ISS orbit is 199 miles. The balloon was essentially geostationary. Low orbital velocity is over 15,000 MPH.
Other that that, Geronimo.

But yea, it happens. Entangling with other jumpers on landing approaches IS one of the first jump training points. The "book" response to flying towards an unpleasant object or another person, is just turn away, even if its on final approach. A cross/downwind landing is always preferable to hitting something.
