Sunday Gaming Thread - SCOAMF Empty Chair Debate Version (David)
— Gang of Gaming Morons!

David here. Since Zakn is taking the weekend off, it falls to some of us second-stringers to bring the video game post. Unlike Zakn, I am not involved in EVE online. I prefer to waste my gaming time with Star Wars: The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2, although Borderlands 2 has been sucking up a lot of my disposable time. In any case, here is what has been going on recently in the gaming world.

Mists of Pandaria, the latest expansion to World of Warcraft, has sold at least 2.7 million copies in the first week, pushing the subscribed fanbase for the game back over 10 million worldwide. Blizzard claims that they have seen growth across all geographical areas and all demographic categories.

Star Wars: The Old Republic's lead designer has quit Bioware and is looking for work, at least according to a series of tweets that came to light last week on Twitter. This follows a lot of other high profile defections from Bioware in the wake of their acquisition a couple of years ago by Electronic Arts, continuing EAs perfect record of acquiring the world's most talented game developers and sucking the life from them, leaving their dried, desiccated corpses by the side of the road in the middle of the desert.

Unfinished Swan, the world's premiere "first person painting" (looks like first person paintball game, personally) will debut October 23 on Playstation 3. The game involves revealing the world around the player by throwing balls of paint at the empty landscape around them.

Despite the runaway success of Borderlands 2, Gearbox Games is not currently developing Borderlands 3. The good news is that their development efforts are currently focused on more Borderlands 2 content, so we may see a lot more stuff over the coming months, rather than having to wait 2 or 3 years for more Pandora-y goodness. However, Gearbox also promised that Borderlands 3 development should start up by the beginning of 2013.

Resident Evil 6 shipped 4.5 million copies in its initial shipments, according to publisher Capcom. If true, this would be the highest number of units shipped for any Capcom game ever. However, the numbers provided by Capcom include units shipped to retailers and don't actually indicate the amount of sell-through to individual consumers.

In other "Electronics Arts is the devil and must DIE DIE DIE DIE" news, Skyrim publisher Bethesda Softworks has opened a new studio in Austin headed by former BioWarer Rich Vogel. The new studio, named Battlecry Studios, joins Arkane Studios, run by Bethesda parent Zenimax, as being based in Austin, giving this media group quite a presence in this area.

7 Fuck WOW.  That game sucks too much of your life away.

Go Cold Turkey now and live again.

Think of all the things you could do and all the porn you could watch if you had that 4 hours a night (or in the case of most wow players 8 hours) and more than half of your weekend back.

Go Outside, live life, lose some weight, get some sun, and maybe pussy, or dick if you are into that.

WOW is Evil.

Run while you can and never look back.

9 I have to admit that I am really enjoying trying to catch rare pets on WoW. My in-law's computer was never intended for gaming and between how slowly it responds and the extremely weird graphic effects it's great to have something in the game that doesn't involve processing speed or the ability to see much of what's going on.

11 Over 1000 hours in Skyrim now.  Currently running a very stable mix of over 75 mods that turns the game into gorgeous visual treat.  Finished most of the main quests now, including all the Dawnguard content, except the Assassins, Civil War, Archmage, and finishing off the main quest.

I've started doing the Daedric quests, which I hadn't bothered with on my previous play throughs.

I'm also slowing making my way through a Mass Effect 1,2 and 3 play through with a new character.  Finishing up the last of the side quests before taking on the completion of the main quest.

GOP outs opponent's Orc alter ego.

Maine Republicans have spent the week attacking
Democrat Senate hopeful Colleen Lachowicz not
because of what she's done but because of what she
pretends to do. The GOP in Maine has launched an entire
website dedicated to outing Santiaga, her orc rogue alter
ego (a level 85 orc, even Â… and, no, we don't know
what that means) in the online game "World of Warcraft."
According to them, Lachowicz's "bizarre double life" makes
her unfit for office, and they're sending out fliers to the entire
district to point that out. "I think it's weird that I'm being
targeted for playing online games," Lachowicz said.
"What's really weird is that [they] are going after my hobbies
instead of talking about their record."

15 This was pretty funny: Maine Dem’s Questionable WoW Alter Ego Comments http://freebeacon.com/maine-dems-questionable-wow-alter-ego-comments/ Blizzard is usually pretty good about cleaning up stuff like this. I wonder if they have even heard about it. excerpt: A Democratic state senate candidate in Maine has come under fire for her online alter ego, a level 85 orc named Santiaga who stalks the ashen lands of Azeroth. Colleen Lachowicz is a World of Warcraft (WoW) enthusiast and Democratic politician who has, via Santiaga, expressed her fondness for pwning (WoW speak for “the act of dominating an opponent”). Maine Republicans have created a website, colleensworld.com, to highlight the candidate’s most controversial comments made in her “online fantasy world,” ABC News reported: It turns out that Santiaga has said some not-so-nice things about Republicans, including conservative tax icon and promoter of the “Taxpayer Protection Pledge” Grover Norquist. Santiaga commented that she “may have to go and hunt down Grover Norquist and drown him in my bath tub.” Republicans in the state maintain that their criticism of Lachowicz is not about the fact that she plays the game, rather it’s based on the comments made by her alter-ego. “This is not about her playing video games, this is about the comments she made while gaming,” David Sorenson, communications director for the Maine Republican party, told ABC News, referring to the comments about Norquist, as well as things said about other Republicans. “These are all things that are unbecoming to a state Senator.” Lachowicz has also expressed pleasure as being able to “kill stuff without going to jail.” It is not immediately clear from the context whether she is talking about WoW or IRL (gamer code for “in real life”). Perhaps most damningly, the candidate wrote in 2005 that her “productivity has never been the same … since I starting checking dkos at work,” a reference to the Daily Kos, a left-wing blog of middling quality whose founder, Markos Moulitsas, blamed Sarah Palin for the shooting tragedy in Tucson, Ariz. Leeroy Jenkins could not be reached for comment.

Not too surprising that there's more to the story than the original report, although the GOP should have expected that.  I have to admit that  I find   slaughtering virtual enemies to be a great stress reliever that helps me not take out frustration and anxiety on those around me. At the same time, I don't think I've ever fantasized doing anything more violent  than slapping  to a political person I disagreed with.

----------

I've not seen The Guild. Mrs. Chronda is a big fan and bought the whole series on DVD at the last Blizzcon (I hid in the hotel building the LEGO Hogwart's Express; I'm not good with crowds), but then immediately whisked the whole set away into her mysterious wench cave (like a man cave, only pink and fluffy) before I could get a look at them.

My Pandaria collector's edition arrived. When I installed it on the Windows box I use for running Kerbal Space Program, I didn't have to download anything. Implication being that yes, it will run on my trusty HP Mini 210 netbook, as it's what I've actually been running since the most recent patch. Apparently they just have to throw some switch in the software to turn the non-Pandaria client into a Pandaria client, similar to that old IBM mainframe that could be upgraded to a faster processor by simply moving a jumper.

Been another busy week, so not much time for gaming (taking Latin and Russian simultaneously at the local community college has really put a dent in my game time), but I have managed to get Bill Kerman out to Eve, another of the new planets in Kerbal Space Program 0.17:

69 Polliwogette: the battlepet trainer for alliance is in Stormwind up by the lake with the portals, on the southwest side, not on the island. The horde battlepet trainer is on the plateau with the flight path in Orgrimmar, near the tower that has the tirisfall glades blimp.
I made a horde character on the server you suggested but I couldn't ever find anyone on in the guild and now I don't recall its name.

The guild's not up and running yet, since Polliwogette has not yet managed to get all the required signatures. You'll need to look for one of her characters so you can get together and do the guild charter signing bit.

71 I lurk here a lot, but I thought I would ask if anyone plays Borderlands on XBox, and if so, if they would be interested in playing some team-up games, please leave their Gamertags, and I will be happy to add them to my roster. If not, I understand, too. I just figured that folks at this site would be of a higher caliber in terms of gaming than the usual XBox Live gamers.
