18 I'm going to be on pins and needles for these last two debates.  Intellectually, I know Romney will do great.  What I saw during the first debate is the same guy I've seen talking in a number of venues over the years.

But the stakes are so high.  This is why I don't gamble, I can't take the stress.

Probably a lot more .30 than 1.30 too.  But if you bought a lot of books through Amazon it could add up.

I have bought a lot of mine through Baen who was a lot cheaper than other publishers and who have no DRM on their books.

Hopefully once the "settlement" is approved the price on all Amazon books will drop to somewhere about liker Baen's prices.

Price fixing (which was obvious).  Here is the e-mail:

Dear Kindle Customer,
<br/ > We have good news. You are entitled to a credit for some of your past e-book purchases as a result of legal settlements between several major e-book publishers and the Attorneys General of most U.S. states and territories, including yours. You do not need to do anything to receive this credit. We will contact you when the credit is applied to your Amazon.com account if the Court approves the settlements in February 2013.
<br/ > Hachette, Harper Collins, and Simon & Schuster have settled an antitrust lawsuit about e-book prices. Under the proposed settlements, the publishers will provide funds for a credit that will be applied directly to your Amazon.com account. If the Court approves the settlements, the account credit will appear automatically and can be used to purchase Kindle books or print books. While we will not know the amount of your credit until the Court approves the settlements, the Attorneys General estimate that it will range from $0.30 to $1.32 for every eligible Kindle book that you purchased between April 2010 and May 2012. Alternatively, you may request a check in the amount of your credit by following the instructions included in the formal notice of the settlements, set forth below. You can learn more about the settlements here:

http://is.gd/lkZEG1

<br/ > In addition to the account credit, the settlements impose limitations on the publishersÂ’ ability to set e-book prices. We think these settlements are a big win for customers and look forward to lowering prices on more Kindle books in the future.

I read a book yesterday, took me almost 2 minutes. Granted, it was a largely pictures and geared for the "pleeeeaze-read-it-to-me" literary set, but it was pretty good. "Toto the Tornado Kitten", by Jonathan Hall. Last year a tornado hit Brimfield, MA, killing one person, injuring others, destroying homes and businesses, the whole deal. Anyway, after the storm a tiny kitten (by the looks of the pic, just 3 or 4 weeks old) was found trapped at the top of a huge tree. A bunch of cops, firefighters, tree guys, etc. got together and managed to get the kitten down, and he now serves as a bit of a feel-good mascot for the town that was hit. (The theory is that Toto was blown up there during the storm as he was way too young to climb).

Anyway, if you need to get a little kid a book, and you're an animal person (proceeds go to various Animal rescue facilities), you might want to check it out. Attempt at link in name.

98 Almost no one changes his mind during an election campaign.  Campaigns are about reinforcing existing tendencies and activating potential 'weak' D and R leaners who will vote if encouraged.

Bidet was trying to re-reinforce those already committed to voting D.  He did that, but also reinforced a lot of people to vote R.

You remind people of where their interests are, and how those interested are served by voting for you.  Those opposed to you can be ignored--Bidet knew this, but there are 'weak Dems' and 'weak Rs' out there who he probably alienated.  Alienated weak voters usually don't vote, or vote against whoever pisses them off the most.

130 My source is "The American Voter", first published in the 50s and revised several times.  If you're a Poli Sci Guy, it's the heftiest part of the Canon.

( not the artillery cannon; the other one )

Visualize voters as being on a line going from 100 % Demo to 100% Repub.  As you go from the left end ( D ) to the right end  ( R ) of the line, towards the middle, voter info and certainty grows weaker and weaker.  They take longer and longer to make up their mind, and are increasingly likely to not vote.

Good campaigns are about activating your potential voters and then reinforcing their voter decision.  Ignore the other side, as they will not vote for you--they just won't.  If you do a good job activating potential Republicans, more and more Dems won't vote.

In politics, you always preach to the choir...

156 I got my calculator out to go through the numbers CAC provided in the previous PPP thread. Unless I misunderstood him, here's what I came up with: Using the most Democratic County as a conservative baseline, approx. 13.5% of people who have requested ballots have turned them in. That is approx. 2.5% of all registered voters in that county. In addition, another approx. 1% of registered voters have voted in person. That means a total of approx. 3.5% of all registered voters have voted, and that is using a Dem county for the model so one assumes it's even less. Because more Dems vote early than Republicans, to come up 19% have already voted, PPP must have overwhelmingly polled Dems. The other option is that lots of people lied. Where did I go wrong? By the way, morning ya'll.

Early Mormons were capable of violence against those who they deemed a threat (the Mountain Meadows massacre). But the Mormons successfully integrated themselves into American society, abandoned polygamy, and from all accounts tend to be decent, upstanding people today. Some Muslims are too, but they tend to be the ones who don't take their religion too seriously.

Sharia Law is what most immigrant Muslims come to America to GET AWAY FROM.

They are, however, smart enough to know not to open their yaps about it.

Joffen, just let your supposedly Christian friend in on the fact that if he doesn't vote for Romney, he is actively supporting the re election of Barak Obama. A non vote is endorsing the status quo of Barry. Ask him if he has the guts to admite he is ok with 4 more years of the TOTUS.

226 @137 Mormons were driven from the NE to Ohio to Missouri to Illinois to Iowa to Utah over the course of about 15 years. In the meantime their founder and his brother were murdered by in a jail by mobsters after years of persecution. After they were in Utah, which was not yet a state the US considered declaring war on them and sent troops to Ft. Bridger Wyoming which is about 90 miles from Salt Lake City. The two sides managed to negotiate an uneasy peace, although the Mormons were ready to fight . It was close to this time that the MMM occurred, and those actions have been denounced by the church.
