4 I have been catching up on the S.M. Stirling change novels.  I got the last two from the library.  I had stopped buying them because I was becoming tired of the series.  He has become inflicted with the Robert Jordan (RIP) sympton of too many sub-characters and plots and a never ending plot. 


Not counting the original trilogy, which I thought was good (except I hated the ending), he is on the sixth book in the follow-up series. IÂ’ll see how it goes after I finish these two on whether they are even worth getting free from the library.

My wife got me the first two of your books in that series.  I tried twice to read the first book and gave up both times after less than 1/4 of the book. I gave both of those books to our local library never having cracked the second one.

In short, your books sucked.

I finished "The Obamas" by Jodi Kantor.  Talk about slobbering love affairs.  Kantor really seems to be more in love with the Mrs. than the Mr., but she really can find no fault in either one.  It's an awesome piece of self-delusion and, in case you didn't know, Republicans are just mean, M-E-A-N, mean.

 

Having just finished a book about the Green River Killer, I am re-reading "The Only Living Witness" about Ted Bundy.  It's really one of the best true-crime books I've ever read.  The authors decided to ask Bundy to "speculate" about how the murders were done in order to get past Bundy's ridiculous insistence on his innocence, so it's nothing short of fascinating.

 

I'm also reading "Bitter is the New Black" by Jen Lancaster.   It's the first in her series of memoirs and it's funny and a lot of fun to imagine being as brazen as she is.  I've read another of her books and enjoyed it.

18 I've been listening to Escape Pod for years. They put out all the Hugo short-story nominees once a year, too, in addition to a smattering of classics now and then if they can get permission (All You Zombies was supposed to be their 200th episode, but it didn't get posted until after ep 220). The quality has diminished some since the founder Steve Eley left, but it's still pretty good.

I forgot:  in the car, I am listening to "Hitman" by Howie Carr, the tale of some guy named Johnny Martarano who was a, wait for it, hitman for Whitey Bulger's outfit.

 

I've never read non-fiction about mobsters so this is quite the revelation.  These guys are stupid and classless and repulsive and, of course, amoral.  They are low and disgusting human beings and I don't understand how anyone would voluntarily choose to live like this.  I guess it's easier if you're already stupid and classless and repulsive and amoral.  But, jeez, they're just horrible.

 

The most redeeming thing about the book is, it's read by the deliciously-voiced Keith Szarabajka.

These guys all suffer badly from inflation, their books get bigger each sequel and they lose the focus and character that made their initial book interesting and likeable.

36 No, the Wheel of Time pretty much sets the bar for overwritten series which completely lose the plot. But they all seem to fall prey to this problem: its a moneymaker and they keep getting bigger and more complex and longer and lose nearly everything you originally liked about them.
They need to look back at Fritz Lieber's work. His Fafhard and Gray Mouser books were quick, to the point, entertaining, consistent, and interesting. He didn't feel the need to create this gargantuan world of epic events that each book is even more cataclysmic. Even Lord of the Rings was pretty character focused and tight, for its grand scope.

I liked the Patriot Games movie, even though they severely altered the story. It kept enough of the original elements and worked pretty well as a film of its own. The book is a lot better.
I still say they should reboot the series and film them as historical set pieces. Start with Without Remorse set in the early 70s and go from there, through time as the books came out. Cardinal of the Kremlin, all of them.
Unfortunately, they aren't. They have Chris Pine playing a prequel to The Hunt For The Red October that Clancy didn't even write.

Rush made a point the other day...many of us cannot believe that the vote is this close and we get upset that Mitt is not further ahead or such.  We know 99 percent of the polls are slanted to Obama one way or the other...but Rush made a great point....turn that question around...why is Obama not 20 points ahead of Romney?  Think about it.  Rush said with all the non-stop hit pieces, the slanted stories, the MSM bias, the daily claims of Romney gaffes, Obama spending nearly 100 million more than Mitt in June, July and Aug against Mitt and the MSM hides information on the economy, jobs, money and more why is Obama not up by 20 points?  Why is Romney still tied?  Why was Romney not taken out in June?

Yup. This is the first book of John Christopher's "Tripods" trilogy. The other two are "The City of Gold and Lead" and "The Pool of Fire".

Yes, they would make great movies. There was a  BBC miniseries in the early 1980s, but it never completed.

Coward. Early on the book alternates between Owens' early days as a SEAL, actual missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, and his rise to DEVGRU. And it ends with the mission that took out bin Laden. The author was clear to state that the reason he wrote the book was to get the story reported correctly, since everyone from the JEF on down to the clown car media had butchered it. The majority of the profits go to veteran organizations.

Another issue on polls...we all like Ras....but be aware Ras is also oversampling females.....that is why you may see some weird numbers from him.  He is not manipulating age groups like NBC, Survey USA, PPP and others are doing but he has the female vote up 2 percent more in election.  All the others are increasing youth vote to numbers that are nowhere near possible..some instances 10 percent more than 2008....yet youth enthusiasm is way down and registrations for youth is not up!

Inthat my commute is abour 2.5 hours per day and I'm getting burned-out on talk radio (can't take Levine's yelling any more) I've been listening to audio books. I downloaded an app for the Andriod called "Audiobooks" that has a whole lot of public domain books read by volunteers from something called the Libre Vox project. All of the downloads are free as is the app. The quality of the readers varies somewhat but what do you want for nothing? There's a bunch of apps with various books, try out a couple in that they're free or cheap.

I've used the app to listen to the first three John Carter of Mars books as well as the first Tarzan. Next up is Tom Sawyer then Treasure Island.

I found that this works well when I sync my android up to my car stereo via Bluetooth. I picked up a Bluetooth compatible stereo for less than $200 from Crutchfield. I can also connect via a USB cable. The stereo also has a Pandora button and has HD and satellite radio. When I connected the USB cable it automatically went into my phone and started playing music from my music folder. Amazing stuff.
