"OK, Mr. President, I'm ready to have a national conversation on guns. You go first."
Good morning morons and moronettes and welcome to this week's locked, loaded, and primed Sunday Morning Book Thread.
Blah, blah, blah
In the wake of the Newtown murders, acting President Obama has announced that he wants to have a "national conversation on guns." I don't know about you, but I really love these "national conversations". Of course, we all know that when a liberal says he wants to have a "conversation", it means he wants those who disagree with him (i.e. us) to shut up and listen to a lecture by him consisting of roughly equal parts of contempt, ridicule, insults, and threats.
This is what the left thinks is a "conversation."
But I'm serious when I say I welcome a national conversation on guns - for the simple reason that this is a debate that conservatives win pretty much every time. This seems to be the one area of American life that the progressive left has not been able to impose its worldview on. I'm not sure why this is; perhaps it's because gun owners are so numerous or so well-organized (the left bitterly complains about the NRA and the "gun lobby"), or maybe it's because the tradition of private gun ownership in America is so deep and pervasive that any attempt to transform it into a more European model (i.e. hardly any private gun ownership) simply has no chance of success. But whatever the reason, every time this subject comes up, the result is the same: we win, they lose. More or less.

All of the left's counterarguments are weak tea, mostly appeals based on emotion and empty rhetoric. And then there's this book here, which claimed to be a scientific study on the origins of American "gun culture." This book was greeted with loud hosannas and shouts of joy and praise from the liberal left, who were in a state of near-religious ecstasy because they thought that finally, FINALLY they had some solid evidence they could use against those mouth-breathing, troglodyte gun owners and that pesky 2nd Amendment. This rapturous joy soon evaporated, however, when subsequent investigations revealed that the author basically made shit up wholecloth to support his bogus thesis. His scholarship was so transparently dishonest that they revoked his Bancroft Book Award prize and he also lost his job at the university where he was teaching. Given that the book is completely fraudulent, I'm surprised it's even still in print.
But everybody knows it's crap. And the left has still got nothing.
In The New Yorker, a novelist describes his best seller as a work about free will written from a Catholic perspective — but the novelist is Anthony Burgess, dead almost 20 years, and his essay (about “A Clockwork Orange”) is a lecture exhumed from 1973.
This, in short, is how Christian belief figures into literary fiction in our place and time: as something between a dead language and a hangover. Forgive me if I exaggerate. But if any patch of our culture can be said to be post-Christian, it is literature.
Warning: link is to the NY Times. I think the article is kind of meh, but it does have a number of references to modern books and stories that may be worth looking into.
From the Mailbag
Moron author Raymond Fiore informs me that there will be a 100% off sale on the Kindle editions of his books on Christmas Day. That's right, morons, he's giving them away for free for one day. How cool is that? Info on titles available here.
Long-time moronette commenter Tammy al-Thor recommends the works of Celia 'Sgt. Mom' Hayes. Sgt. Mom spoke of her own books in a comment on last week's book thread:
To Truckee's Trail is about the first wagon train to make it over the Sierra Nevada with their wagons in the dead of winter, The Adelsverein Trilogy is about the German settlements in Texas (Yes, there was an extensive effort to plant a large colony of German settlers in Texas in the 1840s which hardly anyone outside of Texas has ever heard of) and Daughter of Texas and Deep in the Heart are about the early days in Texas, the war for independence, and the raucous days of the Republic of Texas... again, lots of interesting shenanigans going on, like an international dispute between the Republic and France over an innkeeper's wandering pigs.
Me, I'd buy it just to find out what happened with those pigs.
[Update: ] It looks like a number of you moron authors have books coming out soon (I'm looking at YOU Oldsailors Poet, and YOU Sabrina Chase!). You should e-mail me the pertinent details, and I'll announce it in an upcoming book thread.
So that's all for this week. As always, book thread tips, suggestions, rumors, and insults may be sent to aoshqbookthread@gmail.com.
So what have you all been reading this week?

Here's a quote that I probably found here on the HQ at some point, I really don't remember where I found it. I've tried to track down the source (i.e., it what context Judge Kosinski wrote it), but have not found it yet.
The Second Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed for those
exceptionally rare circumstances where all other rights have failed -
where the government refuses to stand for reelection and silences
those who protest; where courts have lost the courage to oppose, or
can find no one to enforce their decrees. However improbable these
contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a
free people get to make only once.

I couldn't make it through the NYT article.
I think part of the problem is not pluralism (as he seems to be claiming) but the fact that after some what 1800 years or so, of Chirstan writing, the various themes have becoem tropes, and cliched.
This is not a knock against religion, more of an observation that there are only so many ways you can tie the themes of Christianity together into engaging fiction before you're just copying someone else's work. I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing per se. If our world is doomed because not enough people got their morality from a fiction book, our world was already doomed because people needed to get morality from a fiction book!
Having said that "A Canticle for Liebowitz" by Watler Miller Jr. Is a great piece of Catholic Post-Apocolyptic Sci-Fi (from the 1960s if memory serves).

I read all the AP yearbooks, that ran from '64 to '77. Found all of them really cheap, some less than the cost of shipping. It's an interesting time capsule, including the fact that you could see where the AP stopped trying to be unbiased (about the same time Watergate was wrapping up, and Jimmah was being foisted on us).

More correctly, there *could* be a good guy with a gun at the school ...
This fact is very conveniently overlooked in any discussion about guns. To the Left, every gun owner is a rabid, out-of-control merchant of death. It's the same tactic they employed against the Tea Party. This is why the public never hears of those times when a massacre is prevented by the presence of a good guy (or gal) with a firearm. This is a conversation I want to have.
That there are conscientious, responsible gun owners who practice safe handling and are aware of the law is totally lost on them.

We all knew where it was going when Obama started his appearances after Sandy Hook with words for the victims, and then changed to a lecturing tone about how "we" must do better and "we" must change. Of course, we knew it wasn't about rational people having a give and take dialogue in good faith about a number of potential solutions. It was always going to be gun control, and it was always going to be "us" that would have to accept gun control, and "them" who would dictate the terms. That there would be no presumption by the left of any good faith on our part, or any acknowledgement that we hate what happened as much as anyone. Or that we might just possibly hold honest differences of opinions backed up by research.
No, we always knew it was headed to us being on the receiving end of the nasty emotional venting of the "WE" care more then you gun nuts, you caused this, don't you DARE propose ANYTHING, just shut up" variety.
And who should Obama appoint to head this national "conversation"? Why none other than that champion of bi-partisan give and take with the always calming, rational, and knowledgeable demeanor. That mediator of mediators - Joe Biden.
As a fellow Delawarean I was ashamed of Joe Biden's condescending, hectoring, interrupting, and demagogic performance at the recent VP debate with Paul Ryan.
Obama's selecting one of the most partisan and strident liberals to head this "national conversation" on gun control is a demonstration of bad faith and ensures that it will have all the nasty characteristics we knew were coming.
I have never owned a gun personally, but the left's loathsome politicization of this incident has hardened my position incredibly.

Liberalism is a mental disease. I like to call it narcissistic projection. What they fear, everyone must fear, what they plan to do, everyone must do, etc etc.
Basically, because they are bumbling idiots who would probably shoot their own dick off if they had to use a gun to defend themselves, then everyone out there must be a bumbling idiot who would shoot their own dick off. if they had to use a gun to defend themselves. They accused Bush of being a wannabe dictator, because they were afraid of Bush cutting in on their plans of installing a dictator.
Projection is their language.

Moving forward from my rant above on gun control, I'm starting to dig into "Back To Blood", Tom Wolfe's Miami opus. So far, so good.
My wife felt is was pretty good, but not up to the "Bonfire of the Vanities" or "A Man In Full" level previously established by Wolfe.
Interestingly (to me), I've postponed starting it in part because it's in hardback and not on my Kindle. Guess I've become a convert.
Probably going to get a new Kindle "White paper(/?)" for the built in light, but some reviews complain about the light's quality. Any thoughyts from here?

Congratulations, Gregory. Making money from writing must be thrilling.
And OSP, I know you'll tell us when your book is up, and I promise to buy. Congratulations!
I finished "In the Garden of Beasts" in the car this week. Learned still more reasons why FDR was a nasty piece of work, not that I needed any more, and that Martha Dodd had "issues." And that Ambassador Dodd was a decent man who tried.
I just started a mystery called "Shame" but the author named the main character "Maryelizabeth" which is just annoying somehow. Plus it's about a serial killer and I'm so tired of that. It's by Alan Russell who someone here recommended but I couldn't find the book that was recommended at the library so I got this one. We shall see.
I have four books on dog traning to read as my dog is leash-aggressive. She also gets cranky at the dog park if she gets crowded by anyone but her best friend, but fortunately she does come when called.
And most important, I got a book called "The Process of Forgiveness" by a Cistercian priest named Meninger. I really need to read this one but, knowing me, will put it off as long as possible. Sometimes, wounds are like a comforting blanket that you just need to keep yourself wrapped in.

The other reason the public doesn't here about a lunatic stopped by an armed citizen is because there is no massacre. It got stopped after a couple shots so there is no news worthy of national broadcast. The only times murders get national press is if a) there are a lot of them and they can use it to push an anti-gun agenda or b) the victim is really hot/young.

The comment about citizen/colonists being able to resist the English soldiers goes to the heart of our problems today.
Just think, if all the colonists had been disarmed in the 1700s, the United Colonies of America would have attained the same political/socialist state of grace that today's United Kingdom has achieved, but far sooner than we progressives will be able to do. But I comfort myself with the vast number of liberties we have already been able to take away from an unsuspecting populace even though they are (currently) able to bear arms.

From the way you frame the question, I assume you are a novice firearms owner. A semi-auto is not necessarily any less reliable than a revolver but a semi-auto pistol does require a bit more to think about (like are you strong enough to rack the slide?)
Frankly, I don't think you can go wrong with a .38 Special snubnose revolver. It is small enough to fairly easy concealed carry and packs a decent punch in a small package. It's not the best cartridge out there but is generally adequate and does not have too much recoil for a novice. There are plenty of good brands out there: Taurus makes a decent one if you're on a budget.
One thing I would suggest is get some practice with a .22 first. You will build your markmanship skills and be less likely to develop bad habits (like flinching in anticipation of the recoil). Most indoor pistol ranges will have handguns you can rent. Since not all handguns will fit your hand the same way, that will let you sample some different firearms with a relatively small investment.

I read "Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter." I did not enjoy it as much as I thought I would and found myself skimming a bit.
Just for a hoot, I'm re-reading this Phyllis Whitney book from my youth, "The Winter People." It's one of those books that I remember very vividly for some reason. I actually think it would make a fun, Gothic-y B movie if they filmed it as a late 60s period piece.
Hard to read this week with all the holiday prep, just on the train commute, pretty much.
I bought some drawing books for my son, and a book for my daughter by the person that does the webcomic "Homestuck" which she loves.
I bought "In Fifty Years We'll All Be Chicks" by Adam Carolla for Mr. Gem. Kind of a light year for book gifts this year.

Read one review lately that lamented so much juvenile sci fi is dystopian. Writers extrapolate from current trends. If people perceive and label the result to be dystopian, it would be nice if they would give more thought to what they are voting for in the present.

On a pistol or revolver, buy what feels good to you and you will trust. Then practice. It should be like picking up any other tool you own and are familiar with. Be safe!

Such as weather. Unless the author specifically said what kind of day it was, there is no discernible weather. Just an empty sky with no sun or moon and nary breeze. Minor unnamed character are actually faceless.
In the first book Thursday believe her experiences in 'Jane Eyre' are fairly unique, with the reality within the book having been created by an invention of her scientist uncle. Yet the reason she enters the novel is to prevent the villain from altering the story and retroactively altering every copy in existence. (It soon becomes apparent that Thursday's world is not ours but is very similar. For instance, Thursday is a veteran of a Crimean War that continued for over a century and was her world's Vietnam.)
By the second book it becomes apparent that each book is a reality unto itself, although dependent on readership for its survival. It's somewhat like the interpretation of gods that fade away for lack of followers. Travel between these realities is easily done once you know how and a government with a police force exists to maintain order, such as keeping military stories from launching invasions to conquer chick lit outposts.
This volume is different in that the narrator is not Thursday Next. At least, not the Thursday Next. Instead, it is the woman holding the lead role of Thursday in the fictionalized version of her famous adventures. She has reason to believe the real Thursday has gone missing and sets out to investigate, despite being an actress by profession and having little of the skills and experience of the real Thursday Next.
If this sounds strange, it is. And only a tiny hint of cascade of strange ideas that erupt from Jasper Fforde's head. For example, Thursday's father doesn't exist and never did. He was a Time Cop who was believed to have gone rogue and was retroactively erased. Yet he continues to put in appearances and managed to father Thursday and her siblings. That is just one small subplot in the series.

138 129 Cold Days is the Dresden pinnacle. Prior books always seemed geared toward a PG crowd. Cold Days is R.
I see what you mean. I suspect it's driven more by the plot situation than by a deliberate shift in style, though.

Personally, I was as depressed as anyone to see the SCOAMF re-elected.
But, I also said two things at the time.
First, that so much bad shit will happen shortly that victory this year was a poisoned chalice. Even Barky with his legendarily narcissistic self-regard is going to have many sobering moments where he wishes he were retired in Hawaii.
And second, that genuine conservatives would have been horribly disappointed with a Romney victory. It would look like Massachusetts. Technocratic tinkering around the edges of the welfare-warfare state. No willingness to confront, clinically describe or make fun of the foibles of Fedzilla, as Reagan so regularly did.
Plus, Romney would probably have signed an assault weapons ban had one been put on his desk. He did it before. The guy is a wet squish on that issue and always has been. (I can't be the only one who remembers Romney in the '08 primaries confidently talking up his "lifetime membership in the NRA" while the ink was still runny on the certificate.)

Everything RBC said is sound advice. However, if he offers to give you any coaching at the range, remember, at no time should both his hands be on your shoulders as he coaches you from behind.
Just sayin'. It's a range safety thing.

A tragedy for the left, is a time to evoke emotion based talking points, while holding dead children up as a human shield from reasoned conservative logic.
The sickness is that so many find these fascist ideals rational, and find using dead children for THEIR politics reasonable.

If it has DRM you will not be able to do it, but you can have the computer tell Amazon to send it to your android and not the computer.
If it doesn't have DRM then you can move it about at will. e-books from Baen have no DRM. Some of the Daw and Tor books have no DRM.
Books you download from Guttenberg have no DRM.

The word "conversation" went out the window for me years ago when Hillary Clinton described her relationship with Bill Clinton as a conversation that began when they met.
Fellow citizens, if what Bill and Hillary have is a "conversation" and not an arrangement, and Bill wants a reset on the verb "to be" from time to time, then we have (another) insight on their Progressive minds and have again had the basis of their public and private duplicity displayed.

Apparently only Amazon books are immediately available on the phone but only if you buy them from Amazon using your phone. However there is a work around.
Here's how you do it Android users: connect the phone as a media device to your computer, open the android files and find the Kindle folder, drag and drop the kindle version of the book from your computer to the Kindle folder on your phone. Now you can open it in the kindle app.
So I now have an epub version of the book in addition to the kindle version. Maybe I can get an ereader program for my computer, but for the time being I'm glad they still make paper books.
Now I'm off to find Christopher Taylor's books to download. I have a feeling I'll be spending lots of money in the near future.
Vic, I was aware of Baens offerings, and now they are available through Amazon I think.

You should be able to copy any DRM free ebook to the Kindle folder on your android directly using the computer.
That is how I get the Kindle version from Baen to my Kindle. I never go through Amazon at all.

It's been a while since I checked but Baen's prices at their site were better than Amazon's for the same books.

Yes, you just have to plug it into your computer and drop it into the phone's Kindle folder. If you download it directly into the phone it has to be through Amazon or it won't open.
Of course my boy now has my phone, talking to his little girly friend, which is why I got my stupidphone in the first place, so he could have the old flip phone...but he won't get it till Christmas morn. I'm going to make him call her first thing so she has his number instead of mine.

"Is anyone else actually reading any books this week?"
Finished G.K. Chesterton's "The Man Who Knew Too Much". I thought it was going to be the basis for the Hitchcock movie, but instead is a series of short stories with nothing to do with the movies. There was a lot of stuff about "Jewish financier's" dragging England into a war as well as a lot of pro-socialism (but not government socialists, interestingly enough) that I didn't see in the Father Brown series. I's need to check wiki, but I *really* hope these stories were written before the Father Brown ones and that those things were things Chesterton grew out of.
