SUPER TUESDAY RESULTS THREAD
— CAC

I decided Drew needed a break, so he put on some concrete shoes per my advice and took a dip in the AoSHQ swimming pool.

Results:
GA@7PM *Newt Projected to win @ 19:00*
VT@7PM *CAC calling VT for Romney @ 19:21*
VA@7PM *CAC calling VA for Romney @ 19:17*
OH@730PM *CAC re-projecting for Romney at 2330**
MA@8PM *CAC calling MA for Romney @ 20:00*
OK@8PM *CAC calling OK for Santorum @ 20:00*
TN@8PM *CAC calling TN for Santorum @ 20:25*
ND@10PM **Called for SANTORUM**
IDAHO @11PM *CALLED for Romney.
ALASKA@1230AM *Called for Romney*

My predictions: OH to Romney by 3, TN to Santorum by 1, everything else is pretty obvious. Gingrich will win Georgia, Santorum will win Oklahoma, Romney carries everything else.

Unnecessary oldie-but-goodie conservative porn below.

UPDATE- @freddoso RT @Redistrict: #OH09 There you have it, folks. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D) becomes first House incumbent to lose reelection in 2012. Will return to home planet in January. h/t to Miss80sBaby.
UPDATE #2-- Looks like I blew ND but hardly enough polling there. Also blew margins in two states but still called correctly. Ohio saw a turnout (with votes still to be counted) of over 1.2 million, meaning there was a 10% jump in turnout over 2008. Some hay has been made over where Romney won. The Santorum areas are not going to go to Obama. The Romney areas will. That Romney got the turnout needed in Dem-dominated areas bodes well if he is the nominee in November, though he badly needs to shore up support with the Republican base to ensure turnout does not drop in the rural parts of the state. One more thought. A lot of snark today about how Romney only barely won OH after spending oodles of cash against the not-Mitts. Romney, for the whole primary thus far spare the last four days, always polled behind here. Sometimes by large double digit margins (in the case of Gingrich and Santorum, he polled -16 against each of them). That he still squeeked it out can be taken in a hundred ways, but let's not pretend it was his to lose all along.

I know a lot of this depressing nightmare that has been the Republican primary has worn us all down. Let us remember that in November, we have the opportunity to hear the wailing sound of the aforementioned hippies, far and wide.

What we can say is that the networks are apparently out to lunch on this.  Dave Weigel is on Twitter pointing out that not only is Romney utterly destroying Paul in the exit polling 63%-37%, he ALSO would have led a hypothetical ballot test with Santorum and Gingrich on the ballot with a whopping 44%.  Weigel tweeted: "CALL IT ALREADY NETWORKS."

So either the exits are totally screwy, or this is false drama on the part of the networks.

115 >>>Srsly? I talked to my extremely conservative brother in Georgia today and he told me he voted for Romney.

So did a lot of other people apparently, especially in the Atlanta suburbs.  It's terrible news for Santorum because according to the exit polling not only did Romney finish in 2nd place (pushing Santorum down to third), the unexpected strength of Romney's showing pushed Santorum below 20% of the vote, which means he doesn't qualify for ANY delegates from the state.

168 "Chicago chief: No blanket surveillance of Muslims," by Hugh Dellios for Associated Press, March 5 (thanks to all who sent this in): CHICAGO — For the first time in public, Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy promised his department will never conduct blanket surveillance of Muslims like the New York Police Department did in Newark, N.J., when he was chief there. McCarthy addressed hundreds of Muslims on Saturday at the annual banquet of the Council on American-Muslim Relations-Chicago, a civil rights organization. He said police would follow leads in criminal cases, but the department "does not and will not conduct blanket surveillance and profiling of any community in the city of Chicago." Chicago Mayor, Rahm Emanuel during a news conference Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, in Chicago. Emanuel says Chicago would not conduct activities like the NYPD operation that spied on Muslims in Newark, N.J., when Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy was chief there. (AP Photo/Charles Rex Arbogast) "We are deeply committed to respecting the civil rights of all Chicagoans," McCarthy said. McCarthy and Mayor Rahm Emanuel have tried to reassure Chicago-area Muslims since The Associated Press revealed the NYPD's spying in Newark.

Stop at a movie channel Enviro-propaganda flick The Day after tomorrow, move on.

.

.

up a couple channels and hesitate too long. 30 Rock comes on. Dude spritzing his indoor garden, move on.

.

Go up a couple more channels and I'm watching Dance Moms.

.

I accidentally hesitated to long on The Rosie Show.  I swear it was an accident.  I punched the controller as fast as I could but the f**king system moves so slow I saw that beached whale's' horrific countenance.  Why in hell  am I spending this much money with the cable company

Posted by: Meremortal at March 06, 2012 08:08 PM (Usk3+)

It's really no big deal.  Jews have magic underwear too, called Tzi-tzit.  Honestly.  They're undershirts that are specially made so that they have the fringes at the corners, as spoken of in the Torah.  Those of us who don't wear tzi-tzit in daily life still put on a talit when we're in synagogue, which is the same thing with the Biblical fringes.

I have no problem with general clothing rites like these and I'm surprised anyone does.

381 Think of evangelicals as the dim bulbs(generally) of Christendom.

It's all very easy to the evangelical. Say a prayer, you're in the club. No messy examinations, rules or liturgies.

They talk a lot about sports teams in their sermons. They tend to talk very quickly and in the vernacular. They tend to have 'praise bands' and sometimes dance numbers. Their church services can look a lot like night-club acts. Dark lighting, the 'pastor' sitting up there on a tall stool, in jeans and beard stubble. Folks drinking coffee in the service, maybe munching a bagel. Remember, this description is 'in general'.

Tis a very broad road, my son.

Calvinists split back in [checks] 1600s. Many of the faiths that originated in Calvinism are today Evangelical in nature even if they no longer hold Calvin's beliefs. Basically every Christian not Orthodox or Roman Catholic, is either Lutheran, or Calvinist. Your two main Calvinist factions Methodist, and Baptist, are the faiths that eventually make up the majority of the Evangelical movement.

414 Just what is an "evangelical" Christian as opposed to a non-evangelical one, anyway? What denominations are we talking?

I've been in evangelical circles since pre-birth, so I'll give you my answer, altho I am only speaking for myself and from my experience.

Evangelical churches are often but not always those churches that are called Bible Churches, Non-Denominational Churches, or Free Churches. They typically have no hierarchy of clergy. They also include many associations of various Baptist churches and Missionary type churches.  They typically have a statement of faith that goes something like this:

Belief in the Bible as the inspired Word of God, without error in its original writings, and meant to be a guide for daily life.

Belief in all the traditional doctrines of the Church, including the Trinity, the Virgin Birth, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection.

Belief in Jesus Christ as Saviour and the only means of salvation is faith in His sacrifice on the cross for our sins.

Belief that Jesus Christ will come again , redeem his people and reign for all eternity. Belief that His return is imminent, meaning at any time, and that we are to be found faithful at His return.

Belief in Heaven and Hell, and a sincere desire to share the gospel of Christ with those in our lives.

Emphasis is on the Bible as the central teaching of our life, faith in Christ as the only means to salvation, and the importance of sharing the Gospel.  Evangelical itself means "to proclaim".
We proclaim Christ.  When necessary, we use words.

Actually the word better translates to workers/ employers.  In fact, in many Christian churches of the day, the servant was in a superior position to his employer within the church family.  For instance, a servant could be appointed teacher in that church and his master could be a general member of the congregation, and subject to the servants' instruction within the worship community.  Hence the Scriptures that talks about in Christ, there is no longer slave or free.

However I can see that you haven't put much study into this area and may not be aware that at the time, pretty much every civilization was structured with servant classes, and the Church was giving instruction as to how servants could best show Christian character to a master who was perhaps an unbeliever.  They should be respectful and prove themselves good and valuable workers who didn't make trouble. Christians were not to be troublemakers.

You may want to disregard all this and just go for the easy shot.  But I have faith in you that you truly want to do better than that.

That's not true at all.  You haven't been paying attention to the polls over the past couple weeks.

Obama was rising until about mid-February when he was slightly positive in his approval ratings.  He's been inching downward ever since.  He was negative 3 and 9 just yesterday in the Gallup and Rasmussen tracking polls.

He does beat Romney in (almost) every poll and is certainly doing better than he was a couple months ago, head-to-head, but 1.) it's not handily, on average and 2.) Romney's also been improving in this area since mid-February.

645 @367 Just what is an "evangelical" Christian as opposed to a non-evangelical one, anyway? What denominations are we talking?

Here's one link on the difference b/t evangelicalism and fundamentalism, and here's the almighty Wikipedia.

The term "evangelical" was popularly used more back in the 80's and 90s, but it's fallen out of use particularly on the campuses - it's been replaced with terms like "Christ Follower."  In practice, many used it to mean "I'm a Bible Thumper but I don't have a stick too far up my butt".  You'll find evangelicals in most denominations (including Catholics).  In fact, I became a Believer in a Charismatic Evangelical Episcopal Church.

But in practice, I'd say the term refers mostly to Protestant denominations.  Within that group, the "more evangelical" ones IMO would probably be Baptist, some subgroups of Presbyterian (althoughsome are pretty left-wing and wishy-washy), the Holiness churches, Pentecostals, and Church of Christ.

And you go, Mama Winger.

Posted by: Berserker at March 06, 2012 05:55 PM (FMbng)

671 Why do people thrive off of negative attention? People thrive off negative attention for a couple reasons:

1.It's the only attention they know. If they have only ever got negative attention, then they think that is all there is to attention. They don't even know it's 'negative', to them it's just attention.

2.Negative attention is much more dramatic and animated. It's more fun. If you help someone, you get a small 'thanks'; but yell at someone and you can get a huge fight.

3.Often people feel they are 'bad' and don't deserve anything good, like positive attention, for example. They know they are bad and wrong so they want to be treated how they feel.

4.Negative attention often 'pushes another persons buttons' and some people like to manipulate other people. And negative is much easier then positive.

5.People would rather be praised then punished, but will take being punished over ignored. This works with attention too. Anything is better then being ignored.

676 Good the nomination will go on.

As I've said, I firmly believe Obama is unelectable.  I also think that Romney will win this, eventually.  My concern was Romney getting the nomination thinking he only had to make promises to the RINOs.  The longer this drags out, the more hard promises he has to give to secure the base.  For example, he started saying he would give 50 states Obamacare waivers, but has been pushed to commit to repealing it.  His "maintain current tax rates" has been force into a 20% across the board reduction.

The longer this goes, the further to the right Romney has to go.  He will face a lot of pressure to not flip flop on those promises.

712 Polli - This is why the RNC set up the primaries this way.  Contrary to all the "establishment" talk, they really wanted Republicans (not Conservatives mind you) to decide the nominee.  The longer the fight, the stronger the candidates get, because they have to fight for the voters, not the media accolades.  I think they learned well from the McCain debacle.

Do I wish it were a strong, on message Perry in this fight?  Yeah, but we got what we got, and all 4 of the remaining candidates are getting better as the fight goes on.

Obama's a perpetual grad student, Newt is the president of the high-school Young Republicans circa 1986, Santorum is an earnest Notre Dame freshman, and Big Ron's the world's oldest high school redneck stoner.

Mitt is an actual grownup with a functional family, he's had a real job and did it well, he's not running for President to get revenge on anybody or boost an inflated ego. He's doing it to fix the goddamned country.

Now all we need is for the Republican voters to stop acting like the world's worst middle-school clique and get behind him to kick Barack out of Washington.

Wow, Romney might barely beat a guy who he outspent 5:1 in attack ads...  The reality about Romney is that he always requires a massive resource advantage to win anything. He is so despised that even today 4 states voted against him even though he is inevitable.

The only reason that he'll be the nominee is that Gingrich is taking votes from Santorum. Without his massive resource advantage/establishment support, he'd be in single digits right now, as he fully deserves to be.

I thought it would be Palin myself, but in the end I'm not sure it even mattered who it was against Romney. It's just how the GOP rolls. I'll eat my imaginary hat if he doesn't ultimately take it.
