Sweet Fancy Moses: Administration Still Trying to Refine Libyan Attack Messaging

From "terrorist attack, maybe partly planned" to "well yeah, it was a terrorist attack but there wasn't any significant planning."

And of course this is after the facts debunked the "spontaneous reaction to a mean movie", which Obama was puttin out last night on Letterman.

Keep chokin that chicken.

Ambassador Chris Stevens and three aides "were killed in the course of a terrorist attack," [head of the U.S. National Counter-Terrorism Center Matt] Olsen told the committee.
But "what we don't have, at this point, is specific intelligence that there was significant advanced planning or coordination for this attack," he said. "The best information we have now, the facts that we have now, indicate that this was an opportunistic attack."
Still, he said, investigators are looking for any sign that the attack was planned.

More dissembling, "specific intelligence, significant advanced planning" (how about any advanced planning? Anything that would indicate it was, uhm, not a spontaneous response to a stupid film?)

Here are some signs Matt. Hundreds of attackers, pre-positioned mortars and RPG teams. Zoned in on the "safe house". Warnings that came days in advance. Oh, and also, 9/11, hello.

It almost seems as if, as events overrun each narrative hauled up the flagpole, you get this begrudging acknowledgement in phases, just to lessen the negative impact of the whole damned thing.

O/T, but

I've had four people approach me this week asking advice about purchasing a weapon for personal protection at home, since they know I'm a lifetime NRA member and shooter. My response:

1. Unless you're committed to learning how to use a weapon safely and to practice frequently to become proficient, DON'T. You're as likely to kill a family member as an intruder.

2. Store your weapon properly. A gun on the bedside table is a recipe for disaster. People have been killed answering the phone in the middle of the night because they groggily grabbed the handgun instead of the handset.

3. For home defense, firepower doesnÂ’t matter. In enclosed spaces such as a bedroom or hallway, a 9MM slug can go completely through an assailant and still kill you 4 year old sleeping in the next room.

4. My suggestion? A 20-gauge pump-action shotgun with a pistol grip. The 20 gauge will stop an intruder. YouÂ’ll need to repaint, but you wonÂ’t bury a child. The pistol grip will allow you to maneuver in hallways. Finally, thereÂ’s nothing like the sound of racking a pump action shotgun. That alone should send them running.

As far as I'm concerned, countries who simply look the other way while our embassies are attacked and our citizens are killed shouldn't get a penny more of your tax dollars.

That's why, just last week, I introduced legislation to stop U.S. taxpayer handouts to Egypt, Libya, and Pakistan.

And I'm prepared to use every procedural trick possible to force a vote - even if it means SHUTTING DOWN the Senate.

Right now, U.S. taxpayers dole out more than $4 BILLION per year to Egypt, Libya, and Pakistan alone.

And what you and I receive in return can hardly be called "friendship."

**     In Egypt, the news reported their government was fully aware of the angry mob descending on our embassy - and even called to alert our officials of the danger - but refused to offer any military or police protection;

**     In Libya, the thugs who killed four American citizens - in the worst of the riots - have not yet been brought to justice;

**     In Pakistan, government officials have imprisoned Dr. Shakil Afridi as "punishment" for tipping the U.S. Government off to the location of Osama bin Laden.

This is unacceptable.

Fellow Conservative, let me be clear: I oppose most foreign aid.

The old tongue-in-check saying describes American foreign aid as a system that steals from the poor in rich countries to give to the rich in poor countries.

That's because even in the most well-intentioned of cases, dictators just steal our money and use it to enrich themselves.

Even the most spendthrift of my colleagues in Congress should see that our foreign aid system is broken.

Not only that, but we're over $16 TRILLION in debt!

And a whopping 71% of the American people agree we simply cannot afford to continue the madness.

I've proposed cutting all $4 billion in aid to Egypt, Libya, and Pakistan and using that money, instead, for deficit reduction and a veterans job bill to help American troops returning home from overseas.

It did not look like that to me. I have never seen anything like that in my life. I lived in Turkey for 2 years, and saw car accidents there, and I never saw shouting and celebration like that. And after they pull the body through the door the video stops and is still shots. The videographer obviously edited the film. He is a 22 year old "student" no one knows much about. Somebody needs to scour Al Jezeera web site for complete footage. It looked really bad to me. It did NOT look like they were helping. It looked and sounded like they were celebrating, with his dead body. I am sure the rest of the video will show up on a jihadi website. Hopefully the folks at the Jawa Report are on it. God knows our government is not.

He said that no demonstrations like that happen without government approval. Also, Pannetta is there and sort of took a neutral position on the dispute, which had Hadley really pissed off because the Japanese have had those islands since the 1880's. He said China has no legal claim and he is very concerned about how this is being handled.

Hadley sounded more angry than I have ever heard any Bush administration person. There was also a correspondent for a paper (didn't catch who) and he backed up Hadley.
