— Ace I might have added in the headline -- it was also, implicitly, anti-cancer-survivor, too. The writer has always had, she said, and "unappealing and didactic" hostility to people with too strong a "will to live."
Also, apparently, an unappealing hostility to look up the definition and usage of the word "didactic," as commenters noted two days ago.
So, Tablet's comment on this article is We hear you, and we're happy to have provided some lively debate, and so you're welcome.
IÂ’m used to our pieces eliciting strong emotions. But the reactions to Anna BreslawÂ’s article have been exceptional. For some readers, her piece explored the consequences of growing up in one specific family touched by an enormous Jewish tragedy, and publishing it asserted the message that young people neednÂ’t express only safely held conventional wisdoms to be involved and engaged with Jewish life.
Which readers were those? Which readers wrote, "Kudos, I've been meaning to say Holocaust and cancer survivors have had it too good for too long but never had the guts"?
But others saw in it a blanket condemnation of all Holocaust survivors—an impression that caused many to wonder why Tablet published it.
Yes. In some languages, "others" means "everyone."
....
What does the intense response to this piece say about what the rules here should be, about what precisely the red lines are in Jewish communal discourse?
The rule should be, "Don't publish people who have more psychotropic medication prescriptions than published articles."
Jeffrey Goldberg says that won't be enough:
Breslaw clearly needs help. Tablet needs to ask itself why it would publish such a horror. It also needs to provide evidence to back-up Breslaw's insinuation that Elie Wiesel has manufactured incidents of betrayal. If Tablet can't do this, then it needs to apologize to Wiesel. While Tablet is at it, it should apologize to those victims of the Nazis who remain alive today -- those "race-conniving, indestructible, taking and taking" Jews of Breslaw's demented imagination.
She does need help. From what I can tell, she is a narcissistic hysteric who is butthurt about her relations with her father and grandparents, and so began spinning some Greater Narrative of Historical Import to explain, essentially, why she doesn't get invited to Pessach any longer. She thought maybe Hitler victimized her (hey, he's important!) not by killing millions of people, but by making her Dad an asshole.
Thus does she trace the history of the twentieth century in the lumps and striations of her doodie.

Personally, let her vomit her screed and let Tablet publish it and screw asking them for an apology. They won't mean it, it won't suffice, and no one's opinion will change.
Let their vile and repulsive writing and editorial choices serve as the signpost to avoid them for the rest of their sad, miserable little lives.

Individualistic cultures use guilt as the main control mechanism (to assure that people act appropriately when no one else is around or can find out). This is because guilt is a totally individualistic and private notion. I feel guilt from what I know I've done - no one else needs to know my actions for me to feel guilt about them. And I cannot feel guilt for something that someone else has done. It is private and individualistic in this way (and very, very powerful as a controlling emotion) and is the perfect control mechanism for an individualistic culture. The antidote for guilt is atonement - making good for what you have done and suffering the appropriate punishment for your actions. Think of Poe's "Tell Tale Heart".
Tribalistic, collectivist cultures, on the other hand, use public shame as their main control mechanism. Shame, as opposed to guilt, is not private (you cannot be shamed unless someone else knows what you've done) and is not within the control of the individual - you can be publicly shamed by someone else's actions that you had no part in. The antidote for shame is revenge.
This is the main difference between the West and the rest of the world. I used to write about this often:
Individualism/Guilt/Atonement versus Tribalism/Shame/Revenge
When a weak personality is taught the normal guilt response, they can't control the guilt as a normal person. Their imagination generates guilt all on its own and the weak personality is flooded with guilt that seems to come from nowhere. This turns the personality into a self-hater who looks to atone and relieve this sense of guilt. But, as the weak personality sees the guilt coming from everywhere (and nowhere) they turn the sense of atonement to the whole of society - i.e. EVERYONE in my culture must atone for the guilt that invades my mind constantly. They are all guilty ... of something. This makes self-haters, as the Western left is, to a tee.
On the other hand, these same weak personalities in tribalistic cultures become overridden with a disembodied sense of shame. The antidote to relieve their shame is to kill everyone ELSE, as that is the prescription in tribalistic cultures. So they want to kill everyone in every other culture. There is no "Western style left" in the islamic world. Nothing even close. Their weka personalities are all homicidal maniacs aiming at those they believe are the source of their disembodied shame. In that, they find common cause with the self-hating Western left.
I skipped a few pieces, but that's the essence of it.

Why do you say that? I very clearly laid out the foundations of self-haters (i.e. the left) in individualistic societies and why different subcultures generate different levels and percentages of leftist self-haters (related to how intensely they use guilt as their control mechanism). If you think about it, it's all pretty clear and obvious.

There is individual shame and collectivist shame. They are very different. Obviously I'm speaking about collectivist shame, there, not our sense of being ashamed as an individual. That is different, though the word is the same. I didn't think I needed to explain this.

Posted by: tasker at July 19, 2012 09:05 PM (r2PLg)
Oy. I was only addressing the foundation of the culture, not every single rule and social more and the other emotions used to regulate them. Our individualistic cultures tend to use guilt as the most powerful control mechanism. Yes ... we still have other concepts we use at other levels, but at the deepest it is individualistic guilt that controls our cultures. It is powerful and serves to create the most productive, dynamic and creative cultures - as the West has been. But, it has the downside that the weak individuals can't deal with this basic foundation and turn into self-haters for the reasons I cited.
What's the big deal? I would think that you could look around you and see how obvious this all is. And if you knew islamic/arab cultures you would be well aware of what lies at their foundations and why Westerners CANNOT empathize with them. Their personalities are structured totally differently from ours. They just react the same way as we do because their culture is that different and is based on a totally different (and non-individualistic) mechanism. We project individualism onto everyone and depend on their guilt to control their behavior (and their "shame" at being stupid or lying or whatever, but that relates to the guilt we imagine they should feel from tho9se actions). Of course, this doesn't work with people raised in islamic cultures, for instance, because they don't feel anything along the lines of the individualistic guilt that we do. It's not part of the culture.

Well, this is my opinion. If the problem doesn't get to the public then nothing will happen to fix the problem. And why can't there be a serious investigation while the public is informed at the same time. May I remind you of Fast and Furious.

"...that's a serious problem, and one best served by NOT having publicity-seeking congresscritters releasing information before an investigation has been properly conducted. "
Correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't Bachmann the one trying to get an investigation started on the vetting and security procedures regarding the Muslim Brotherhood? Didn't she and others send letters to Inspectors General for this purpose? And just who "released information" before an investigation could be conducted? Do you mean "leaked information"? Because everything I've seen to date "released" by "Congresscritters" has been in the public domain for months or years.
Don't you think Keith Ellison might be a better candidate for the title of "publicity-seeking congresscritter" in this event? I do.
"...no matter what else John McCain might be, he has never been one to take national security issues lightly..."
You mean National Security issues like our porous border with Mexico? Well, I guess you could say he was dead serious about that, but dead wrong, too. Taking something seriously doesn't always mean having a clue about it. And whatever else John McCain may be, he has never been one to pass up an opportunity to jump across the aisle and wag his finger at his own party.
