Team Obama Buys a Week of Ads in... Michigan
— Ace

In play.

This is an ad purchase aimed at securing Michigan; it is not aimed at crossing into Ohio or any other state. DetroitÂ’s radio market runs into Monroe County which borders the Buckeye State, but it does not cross over, as some metropolitan media markets do.

And Geraghty adds that it's an expensive ad market. You don't play there for fun.

The only thing I can think of is that their voters are so dispirited they're desperate to increase turnout.

75 So what about all those polls out there still plaintively trying to sell their 2008 turnout model of D+7? I feel sorry for them. Almost. Here's what happens to their D+7 fantasy weighting of their polls if this is indeed a R+1 or greater turnout this election. That IBD/TIPP poll that finds Obama holding a 1 pt lead? Here's what that would look like with R+1 turnout on Nov. 6: D+7 = 1 pt Obama lead D+6 = TIE D+5 = 1 pt Romney lead D+4 = 2 pt Romney lead D+3 = 3 pt Romney lead D+2 = 4 pt Romney lead D+1 = 5 pt Romney lead D+0/R+0 = 6 pt Romney lead R+1 = 7 pt Romney lead. Oh hey look, I'm where Gallup has had Romney for more than 2 weeks, with a +/- 3.5 pt margin of error: Somewhere between a 4 pt and a 7 pt lead over Obama. The DMC knows if this turnout on Nov. 6 isn't AT LEAST D+5 Obama is toast. Their OWN POLLS ARE TELLING THEM THIS. A D+5 or greater turnout for Democrats predicted and they STILL can't get Obama above a 1 pt lead or a tie with Romney. But watch Liberals across the fruited plain sail on in blissful unawareness, still thinking Obama's got this in the bag somehow when he's actually trailing right now by 4 points or more. Obama must have it in the bag somehow because NATE SILVER SAYS SO!

Finally googled the maps and found an obscure one in the southern part of the county....the wait was still 30 minutes. The peeps in line were excited, friendly, talking, etc. Keep in mind, this is safe Red Texas!! I remember in 2008, everyone was pensive and gloomy...very little excitement. If this is a hint from a safe red state, I can only imagine the adrenaline flowing in OH, PA, and the others! Super praying for repeat LANDSLIDE of 1980. I'm guessing the Obama campaign is looking over their internals right about now and giving each other lots of meaningful glances. They're looking at--if not a Reagan/Mondale blowout--then an inverse of the Obama/McCain numbers of 2008. They're desperate. They've blown most of their money and are spending what's left in states they thought they'd never have to defend. If there's an October Surprise coming--a real election-bending October Surprise and not some Allred-like idiocy--they would've played it by now, a week before the election.

I don't know about any of you but the idea of these people being desperate and frantic has me worried. These are the same people, after all, who are responsible for Fast and Furious and the Benghazi coverup. The American far-Left has spent years, decades, clawing their way to power, and I simply don't believe they're willing to give up that power as the result of a free and fair election.

Say you're David Axelrod and President Obama calls you into the Oval Office. He says he wants a game-changing idea and he wants it now. Let's posit you aren't tied down by the constraints of conventional morality or antiquated notions of fair play. Let's go even farther and stipulate that you would do absolutely anything to win this thing. What do you do? What's your recommendation?

For starters, I fix Oregon. All mail voting with signatures on file. Send them off to a printer. "Lose" ballots during the "signature verification" step for known Republicans.

Push for New York et al to get "more time". Hit print there too.

Do the same in Washington and California. Check the other states for anywhere with easy mail-in or absentee ballots. Even losing the electoral college, this should end up with a significant chunk of people. Enough to make a crushing popular victory.

And then stir the pot hard.

160 If, by the Amazing Grace of Almighty God, the side of Liberty, ours, wins then we have an awesome task ahead of us.
The quick and dirty would be just to do unto them as they would do unto us, but we're better than that.
Starve them of our money. A paradigm for this strategy might be Planned Parenthood. They should get exactly zero $ from any public treasury. If we do our part, they will still probably have enough money to jet every baby-killing mama to Paris (where non-Muslim pregnancies will soon face mandatory abortion) for a 10-day abortion-and-shopping vacation. You accept an Planned Parenthood abortion? Sorry, we pull your Section-8, your welfare, your food stamps, your government healthcare, your subway tokens, your cab-ride vouchers, etc.
Similarly, for weak-minded local school districts, you want that Federal bribe to teach same-sex "marriage"? Sorry, buy your own shoulder pads for your football program.
Highways? So effed up, we should just eliminate the gas tax. Mobility, like safety, is its own reward. Those concerned should pony-up.

Sure, maybe Team O can hope and pray that things will get better for them, and a few more days means more hope. But why do you think there's been such an all-out (unprecedented) push for "early voting"? I think Team O knew a Romney surge was likely to grow. And especially: they know that news of Benghazi is just going to keep spreading and spreading. They needed as many Obama voters as possible to be locked down and vote *yesterday*. Giving voters yet more days to decide on their vote-- that's more likely to hurt Obama than to help him. (Their only hope is a "Sandy" surge for Obama, but that seems a slim hope to me.)

Radio and TV stations deal with political campaigns by making them pay cash in advance. Enough radio and TV stations have been burned by candidates not paying, that they make sure the check clears before the ads start.

At least that was what we had to do back when I was in radio, and I am sure there are some radio stations that don't care if Obama stiffs them.

180 173 Ha. What if this Hell Night, what's left of Detroit gets leveled? Money wasted

It's called "Devils Night."

And if Detroit gets leveled, will anyone notice? I don't think so.

In fact, there are so many abandoned crack houses, I think many see this as an "opportunity" to get rid of the houses the city won't. Because they're busy.... doing I don't know what. But not helping anyone who lives there.

So burn away. We're all OK with it here.

Just as long as they leave the theater district alone.

Can EBT cards be used for toilet paper and paper towels? My neighbor used his EBT at a local strip club? Is this for real?

EBT cards can be used for anything.  They've been tracked at casinos and cruise ships.  Even if the gubamint cracks down on where they can be used, people sell them on the street for less than their dollar value.  Our local news did an expose of this.  People take the cash and go buy drugs or booze.

190 Let's go even farther and stipulate that you would do absolutely anything to win this thing. What do you do? What's your recommendation?

Mass Republican boycott. Let Obama win with an absurd 80% of the vote and negligible turnout in Red States. Local races elect Tea Party types with that turnout.

Prove that Obama isn't the enemy; it's the entire DC machine that's the occupying force.

Here in the People's Soviet Socialist Republic of Commiefornia, EBT cards don't work in strip clubs any longer.

That was turned off by Arnie der Groppenfuhrer, in one of the handful of meritorious public policy actions he undertook as Governator.

213 FUCKERS!!!!! Over the weekend, Facebook took down a message by the Special Operations Speaks PAC (SOS) which highlighted the fact that Obama denied backup to the forces being overrun in Benghazi. The message was contained in a meme which demonstrated how Obama had relied on the SEALS when he was ready to let them get Osama bin Laden, and how he had turned around and denied them when they called for backup on Sept 11. I spoke with Larry Ward, president of Political Media, Inc -- the media company that handles SOS postings and media production. Ward was the one who personally put the Navy SEAL meme up, and the one who received the warning from Facebook and an eventual 24 hour suspension from Facebook because Ward put the meme back up after Facebook told him to take it down. Ward said Facebook pulled the re-posted meme down within 7 or 8 hours and suspended the SOS account for 24 hours. http://goo.gl/TGVIT

Since Arbitron's radio markets and tv markets are pretty closely aligned, they use them as a guide as to what radio stations to buy. If you want to buy CBS, NBC, etc, you have to buy the local stations, you cannot be on "The Voice" or "Dancing With The Stars" by buying cable, and you can't get local by buying satellite. Local cable will get you on ESPN and Lifetime, but unless it is a "big event" show, your local network stations deliver the most bang.

239 In the Twin Cities Metro of Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN, we actually have Socialism. The Met Council (google them) metastasized from the original Seven County Metropolitan Mosquito Control District to the point where now they even have their own police force, the so-called Transit Police. Being mostly Norwegian, I blame it on the Swedes (they were, after all, "neutral" in WW II; and they may still be gland-less), but Swedes aren't that smart. Beautiful, lithe (in large part) good skiers, lotsa blondes, inventors of that marvelous rifle cartridge, the 6.5 x 55mm), but they are nonetheless Swedes. This here s**t looks more like a very slightly technocratic Jonestown. And there is lots of Obama bin Biden swag apparent. Not that they have hetero sex, or anything, that would make the "prestige" real, but it's related to which trails you ski, and what cars you drive, and the ineffable seat-rank in the wonderful buffets put on by the Morlocks for these beautiful Eloi.
Except for our area's natural beauty, the non-Swedes, and the fact that I still live here, it would be a natural A-bomb target for the cottage-industry A-bomb targeters of the world. "You want gravad lax with that suitcase bomb?"

240 @28 "Remember in 2008 the JEF won states no one expected and that saw little campaigning. Which ones for Romney this time? I say NM, MI, PA and WI. On top of VA, FL, NC, OH, CO, NV and NH." - RoyalOil I'd look at the states that have large white populations, even if they're traditionally Democratic (e.g., Iowa, NH, MN, WI). Less at a state like PA, which people might normally think of as more purpleish. The reason is that O is probably going to get crushed by something like 65-35% w/ the White Vote. This fits because if these states haven't gone R in a while no R has won the white vote by at least 60% since 1984...Reagan only lost MN then because Mondale was from there and Reagan didn't campaign there...didn't want to humiliate him. O has no one to blame but himself. Morality aside his (or his supporters') campaign to demonize the GOP as the Party of "old white men" was politically insane. Since young White men are going to be old White men someday, and white women are going to have sons and husbands who are...effectively the Ds were attacking what's likely to be 75% of the voting electorate. Just crazy. Also was effectively breaking a campaign promise to "get us beyond Black and White, Red and Blue". Not wise when you're attempting to paint Romney as two-faced and whatnot. I still say the best part of this other than the change in the top slot, is going to be the personal and professional destruction of Nate Silver. He'll become the modern version of "Dewey beats Truman". You can't have that happen to you as a pundit and survive. And it couldn't happen to a nicer geek. Actually, he seems OK, I just can't stand the people who quote him. Most of them had never heard of SABRmetrics before him, and for those of us who know it's ridiculous, their talking it up is sickening. The rest of the Ds (most of them) will take precisely the wrong lesson from the defeat, and continue the race-carding, or even increase it. But what states? I don't see it so much of a landslide, as surprisingly decisive...that'll give it the feel of a landslide. NH, Iowa, MN, WI, CO, OH, FL, VA, NC. Romney will lose close races, though, in places you might suspect he'd win, like NV. Popular Vote margin will be something like 2.5%-5%...Romney, of course.

The Dems don't make ad buys to payoff contributors. I actually worked in radio for a big Dem contributor and he used to get pissed that he didn't get their ad buys. There are some broadcasters though that didn't mind getting stiffed by the Dems for running their advertising. They usually would get helped by the state or other government by getting ad buys from the lottery or some other government advertising.

246 #117: The Detroit market covers about 3,000,000 people - most of whom do not live in Detroit. Ann Arbor is another head-case, however...

Tell me about it...

248 They aren't deleting them but they are not allowing their algorithm to "trend" #Benghazi

252 I'd add Iowa to the trend R column.  When all six major fishwraps in the Hawkeye endorsed Flip, game over.

253 I still don't feel certain about the election, but then I'm a natural pessimist.

If I'm lucky my car will be repaired and I'll get back to my state to vote on Tuesday.  Shoulda voted early, I know.  I regret not doing so.

246 - Reagan DID campaign in Minnesota - scheduled a last-minute trip into Rochester (Mayo Clinic) on November 4, 1984...He didn't view it as "humiliating" Mondale, he saw it as "when I look at a map of our country, I don't see a state we can't win".  I wish Romney would adopt the same attitude - and it would help him govern.

255 Re: Obama doing ads for Senatorial candidates...

Here in Massachusetts, Elizabeth Warren has two ads currently running that speak to this question:

- In the first, it's all about President Obama calling Elizabeth Warren a tireless warrior for the middle class, or some such.

- In the second, it's all about how if Scott Brown wins reelection, he could be the vote that hands the Senate to the Republicans -- allowing them to confirm a Supreme Court nominee who would overturn Roe v Wade.

No one seems to have commented on the fact that the second ad seems to assume that President Romney will be nominating Supreme Court justices for the next several years.

257 After the first debate I thought three or four states people hadn't talked about might be in play before it was over- Minnesota, Maine, Oregon and New Mexico.

Why these four?  None have especially large urban black populations who will go 95% for Obama.  All of them have people hit hard by gas prices because there is  no alternative to cars for most residents plus Maine & MN lead the nation in gas powered toys like snowmobiles and boats respectively.  New Mexico was a battleground state in 2000 and 2004.   In both NM and OR there is a sizable block of Mormons who are not only likely to vote in mass for Romney but many are busy working GOTV operations for the Republicans.   New Mexico is also about 40% Catholic while Maine and Minnesota are about 25% Catholic.  Oregon is less socially conservative but are the many libertarians there really going to vote 3rd party if that means four more years of Obama?

This is probably a dead thread but I'll post anyway. Our local FM stations die out somewhere near Toledo but we have a few AM stations that can be heard almost halfway into Ohio. Upthread people wondered why things were expensive in Michigan. One word: Unions. Food is relatively cheap but everything else costs more than many states.

259 If you need to get the welfare queen vote out to save the state, that is the place to do it. I can't believe that that market doesn't reach down into Toledo, OH as well.
