Team Obama: Keep Calm Even If You Hear Republicans Are Winning
— Ace

This is actually good advice for Republicans -- remember in 2000, all the networks, even Fox, called Florida before polls there were even closed.

The Republican-heavy Panhandle could vote until 8 PM Eastern, but the genius networks didn't know that, and insisted the polls shut down at 7 PM Eastern-- telling Republican voters in a densely-populated area of the state to not vote.

And then they compounded that by calling the state for Gore.

Telling Republicans the polls were closed when they were still open for another hour was one of the biggest dirty tricks played in the history of politics, and probably turned Florida from a clean Bush win into a very, very narrow, intensely disputed one.

In addition, claiming Bush had lost the election by 7 PM eastern undoubtedly poisoned the spirits of Republicans in more westerly states. And remember, that year, New Mexico was lost by Bush by something like a thousand total votes.

Wisconsin was also not called until the day after the election. People forget that. I did. I only know this because I spent last night reviewing the coverage of Election Night 2000.

While this is good advice, I have to wonder why Obama is offering it. Does he worry that early election day voting is going to go badly against him?

n a conference call this afternoon, President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign had one central message for their supporters when Election Day arrives tomorrow: They should “keep calm,” even if they hear snippets of information favoring Republican Mitt Romney.

“My warning, we need to stay calm for much of the day,” Stephanie Cutter, Mr. Obama’s deputy campaign manager, said, touting thousands of early ballots already submitted by voters. “We’ve already banked a pretty big portion of our vote.”

The fear, she explained, was early numbers leaking before voters have finished going to the polls, creating unnecessary panic and pessimism among Democrats.

By the way, I just got back from making calls for Romney. The place was packed with volunteers. And the people I called were enthusiastic about voting.

It's still not too late to get in touch with a Romney campaign office tomorrow-- they need people poll watching and working the strike lists and making sure that our voters get to the polls.

As I said earlier, I think the plan is to have people at the polls marking each Republican who votes, and then relaying these lists back to HQ, where volunteers will viciously harass gently remind voters that they really have to get off their couches and take a simple action in defense of the nation.

This may depend on the local call center, but even if you can only devote an hour or two to the cause, they probably need it.

Plus, it's kind of fun.

The Sixth of November

Remember, remember, this sixth of November,

The radicalsÂ’ treasonous plot.

I know of no reason the radicalsÂ’ treason

Should eÂ’er be forgivÂ’n or forgot.

The Sixties were waning, and Leftists were claiming

That radical changes were due.

Their Marxist solution was armed revolution:

The Weathermen made their debut.

The radicals raged on the national stage, and

Horrific explosions ensued.

Their bombs were dramatic, but also erratic;

They sometimes killed radicals, too.

The Leftists grew older, the underground, colder,

And so they came in from the cold.

“Subvert from within – in the long run, we’ll win,” said

The Leftists, determined and bold.

And thus it began – this nefarious plan – and

The radicals slowly took charge:

Complete infiltration of all education;

The long institutional march.

The journalist schools would produce useful fools, for

The Left would need media shills.

And Hollywood, too, would assist in the coup, with

Its slick propagandizing skills.

“Community action” would build a new faction;

Â’Twould organize proles on the street.

A smooth politician would front for the mission,

And run for the presidentÂ’s seat.

The radicalsÂ’ goal, which they proudly extol, is

A communist U.S. of A.

Collectivist schemes lead to brutal regimes, and

For this do the radicals pray.

But JeffersonÂ’s aim, with the charters he framed, was

To guard individual rights.

And “redistribution” was not a solution,

But one of the evils to fight.

So let us remember, this sixth of November,

Just what is at stake on this date.

Will JeffersonÂ’s dream, or the radicalsÂ’ scheme, now

Determine AmericaÂ’s fate?

If you're calling and not asking that question, I'm not sure what the hell data you're trying to collect.

40 I've spent the last two weekends pounding the pavement AND sitting in call centers doing GOTV in Virginia (everywhere from Northern Virginia to Hampton Roads to Newport News).  Spirits were incredibly high (and I was doing the same stuff for McCain in 2008 in Indiana -- I know the difference), bonhomie was the order of the day, and whatever target lists we were working from were dynamite because I personally (and many of the people working around me) were hitting the sweet spot of Romney-leaners who weren't super-committed just yet but were amenable to that extra little push.

Virginia is going to be tight, tight as a tick.  But we're going to take it.  At the end of the day it isn't even going to be the upsurge of GOP votes in coal country that put us over the top so much as it will be crossover votes from moderate Dems/independents/swing voters in Northern Virginia.  (Incidentally, that means you should look for George Allen to run behind Romney -- the Romney/Kaine voter is a very real thing in NoVA.)

Either way, I'm glad it'll all be over tomorrow.  Enough!  End! END!

52 One, this headline is good advice. It drives me crazy how people can't be bothered to vote once every 2 years because the media are saying something, which may or may not be true. Anyone who bases their voting franchise on the last ABC broadcast needs a slap upside the head. Whatever the hell they're reporting -- on any topic -- chances are they'll change it in 3 days anyway. Two, I predicted a narrow Romney win a few days ago, with a larger Romney win or narrow Obama win both possible. Then, due to the effects of Sandy, and seeing the polls sliding for Romney, I reluctantly came to predict a narrow Obama win with a narrow Romney win possible. However, contra my prediction, Rasmussen's daily tracking poll upticked not downticked for Romney, which was a reverse of course, albeit definitely MOE. Further, Gallup still has Romney up a point nationally. While the Dems have some advantages in the battleground state, and have had 4 years under Obama and Holder to lay the groundwork for their usual margin-of-cheating advantage, Romney has the hopeful message and Obama the flailing one. Therefore, in light of the new data showing Romney's slide has at least stabilized, possibly reversed, possibly as last-minute deciders get serious about their choice and not just take into account Obama's passing Sandy performance, I conclude that this race is very close to jump ball. But I give the edge to Romney at the closing stretch. So I'm looking for a narrower popular vote victory than I would have expected 10 days ago, but a Romney electoral vote victory as well. But tight. Not a blowout. Krauthammer more or less agrees, although I don't think he'd be surprised by a larger win. http://goo.gl/Hbnid

62 By the way, as part of my pre-mortem, I really do want to say one thing: win or lose (and I expect him to win, very much so), Mitt Romney turned out to be so much more than I think most of us here hoped as a candidate, a campaigner, and a standard-bearer.  Remember this, people, no matter what happens.

From promoting Paul Ryan to presumptive leader of the GOP (in the event of either a loss OR a win), to organizing an ultra-competent campaign, to wiping the floor with Obama in the do-or-die first debate, to his inspirational close where he actually made this campaign about The Big Things instead of Obama's small-bore bullshit....Mitt Romney has been a guy who actually deserved our nomination, earned it, and has done us proud.  It's all the more impressive given how much he was viewed with hatred and suspicion on many quarters of the Right for so long.

I tip my cap.

69 I have to admit to sympathies on both sides in the great sick-of-phone-calls debate. Yes of course it's important. If you want to get depressed about the whole human adventure, just mope around about how the greatest culture in history chooses its leadership via pep rallies, half-minute gotcha spots, and those damned calls. It really is degrading to the idea of the republic. Happy warriors my ass, even if the right side wins, this is stupid. How did we get here?

Used to be, the "goo-goo" types could look down their long, pince-nez'd noses at that kind of campaign, until the candidate debates got degraded, too. You can't go to the bar, if you have to drive home -- and if you do, nobody discusses issues since the talking point was invented. Even for those who want to work through platform ideas on a site like this, it's all "die in a fire." Yeah, it's what we've got, and we're lucky not to have worse, but the whole process is nothing to be proud of.  GTG, working the polls right on the Lake Erie shore and have to be there by 0530.

You got Pat Boone? I did better with Clint Eastwood.

I've had 6-8 calls a day for the past few days. Three since dinner tonight. The O-bots must have my number though, because they don't bother here.

I've had 2 of those.
I turned down the option to conference call with Paul Ryan.
Wife asked me why, and I told her I had absolutely zero questions or disagreements with him, and didn't want to waste his time.  The only thing I would have been interested in was how many deer he'd scored with a bow, and what his technique was.

O-bots quit bothering me about 10 days ago.
I've had 4 door-to-door types with clipboards because my name is on the "unaffiliated" list.
I pointed out all the neighbors who are Obama, and who are toss-ups, and gave anecdotal data for the neighborhood and surrounding area, and made suggestions on where to try next (new residents, etc).

Ace can blow me if he thinks I don't care about this country.

96 #54 I see where you are going with that comment, "they know something we don't" but hacks like Cutter and Donna Brazille (from the Gore days), they didn't get the job by being Chess thinkers, they are efficient little bureaucrats. It points to the fact that they know the exit polls are going to reflect the reality, a Romney win. They must deny, deny, deny the reality up until the closing moments. Look at the comments of Axelrod the days before the 2010 midterm elections. On a practical level they don't want their voters to give up and not show at the polls after the exits leak out but the fact that they already know the exits will be bad for Obama is very telling indeed.

Traffic, parking, and lines to get in were a huge, happy mess, but the energy and enthusiasm was awesome. Mitt was simply fantastic - fresh, funny, and friendly. Remember this, people, no matter what happens. Absolutely. The only thing I disagree with Romney about, was not making the case more frequently on Benghazi, so to force the major media to cover it. I understand his reasoning on not doing so, and also how he shied away from it after that kerfuffle in the second debate with Crowley's unprofessional and dishonest side-taking, but I still think he ought to have kept on that. Never stopped.

You know, just watching CNN and CBC here and there during the day and FoxNews later at night, I really think Romney's going to win big. Maybe it's the anger coming out of President Dumbass, the enthusiasm that's showing up for Romney in the crowds, the Obama crowds appearing almost as if they were bused in, reports on CBC interviewing many Obama people from 2008 who are now voting for Romney, MFM reporters seeming kind of nervous or maybe it's just the beer I bought for tomorrow that I've started killing now.

What does scare me is how an election in America with someone like Obama, after 4 years of the suffering he's inflicted on America, the bungling, the anti American-exceptionalism, the debt - how the hell is this even close?

If anything, I think tomorrow's results will show percentage wise, just how polluted, stupid, corrupt, socialist, whatever America has become. Those will be Obama voters. There is no compromise anymore. Metaphorically (?), they want to kill 2 babies, we want to kill none. How do you compromise with that?

But for now, I'm going to save beer for tomorrow. I want to find an MSNBC election stream and hopefully see some 'journalists' off themselves on-air. And if Hollywood were to film a chunk of 'celebrities' doing the same, I'll pay for the DVD.

167 One interesting thing.  I've heard a lot of people who are phone banking saying everyone is happy to get the calls and very enthusiastic.

I was phone banking in 2004 and everyone was irritated about being called yet again.  I go lots of "can't you get me off the list, I'm tired of the phone ringing".

And 2004 was the best turnout that the GOP has ever had.

169 Interesting that Stephanie Cutter on a conference call urged Obama supporters to "stay calm" in the face of exit polls and early numbers.
--

Awhile back I read some article quoting Cutter as saying after the campaign she wanted to return home, go back into private industry I think.  I don't remember exactly how it was worded, but I got the impression she might be fed up with having to non-stop lie and spin for Obama.  For about a half a second I almost had sympathy for her.

Maybe underneath the layers of Obama slime, a semi rational person lurks.  She was actually caught telling the truth once, admitting to something the campaign was desperately trying to spin away.  The "keep calm" thing seems similar, perhaps a little honesty leaking out.

Bastards.  I tell ya, the Tea Party goes after fiscal responsibility and every single one of us disgusted with the media have to make them our next target and we can't let up until journalistic integrity is on the front burner, and that means we have to call out people BY NAME and BY PROGRAM and we can start with Steve Kroft and his producer, and CBS for not releasing until 2 days before an election the whole interview Kroft did with POTUS weeks ago on Benghazi.  Even after the second debate, they didn't release the edit that would have shown Romney was right for attacking POTUS, would have shown POTUS' lie, would have revealed Ms Crowley as a hack.  OF course, Kroft is a hack too.  Let's get 'em!  No democracy can survive with a media like this, people pretending to be hard news reporters.  Bastards.

Then, we get on the damn pollsters for being in bed with the media.

I think there's going to be some early internal exit polls and anecdotal evidence of the Landslide that will send some Dems into crisis mode. The brain can only maintain a delusion for so long and that time varies between individuals.

263 In Poland, no less. Were these American teachers? I would have been at the school so fast they wouldn't know what hit them....or as my kids always called it, "Uh oh....mom's goin' Sicilian on them." Posted by: Tami The American Community School-teachers were American. Majority of kids in the school Poles, with Koreans being the next highest demographic (there is a HUGE Korean population in Warsaw-go figure.) Americans are jumbled in with the remaining 30 percent from all over the world. We did go and complain, and were told it was just too bad. We did pull him out of one class where the teacher went apeshit about him, saying he was rude and disdainful, and was graded on how well he could get the Korean students to understand and analyze American literature. We asked the teacher if that was supposed to be our son's task, or his. Have you ever seen those cartoon characters whose eyes bug out when they are angry? It really looks like that in real life. Unfortunately, the experience really upset my kid, since the teachers also got the students to mess with him. I try to pray for them, but I admit it often comes out as a request for smiting. Now we are in the Florida Panhandle, and I can say our neck of the woods is Romney supportive, and voting like their lives depend on it.

Wow, I hope we pull this off:  This is the second time today I've heard Reince Priebus on Fox, this time on Great, telling people, quite confidently, that by "11pm, and 10 Central" you'll be able to hear Mitt Romney named your next President.

I can't help but recall the Bush-Gore thing and the Bush-Kerry thing, but by gosh, this Reince guy sure seems happy and confident.

I've heard vague references to the POTUS' rallies today, but no one said what his mood seemed like.  How about Romney today?(I stress today because I saw stuff on their moods yesterday, but every day these guys' pollsters do internals and as I read, they pay a lot more money to their pollsters to get exact info that guys like Rasmussen and Gallup just can't get.)

Mitt will be in Pittsburgh tomorrow, which reaches three states.

283 "Mitt has to be exhausted and is 15 years older than Obama, yet he is the Energizer Bunny of campaigners."

It is not a mystery.  Mitt is a successful man married to a lovely, warm, gracious woman, who is the love of his life.  They have 5 handsome sons, a gaggle of gorgeous grandkids, and faith.  He has it all.  Even if he does not win the Presidency, he still has it all.

Barack Obama is married to an ugly, awkward, gawky, angry, selfish, ill-mannered, shrewish woman.  In unguarded moments you can tell they barely tolerate each other.  They were scrubbed from the Internet, but, there used to be photos of him with Reggie Love sitting in the Presidential limo--Obama is leaning into Reggie and his face is glowing with love--maybe it was brotherly love.  But, if he was the first Gay President, he stayed deep in that closet.  He always looks awkward with his daughters--whom he called sons on more than one occasion.  He hides his true faith.

As for me, I had to leave because I downed an entire bottle of vodka the night before and was way too hung over to dance. It was so stupid to see that because when Bush won, it's not as if any of us were running around with champagne bottles and tshirts the following morning celebrating the win.

Longest month I ever spent was the Florida Recall.  It ruined Thanksgiving,  nearly ruined Christmas,  and I lost 10 pounds because I was so upset all I did was chain smoke and drink coffee!

On the plus side,  my grandson,  who was then 4 years old,  learned to read the word "Bush", as I had a bunper sticker on my car and kept my sign in my yard even as the snow fell!

My grandchildren,  whom I watched for 10 years until they were old enough to stay by themselves,  are ALL conservatives!  Grandma wasn't above telling them the straight scoop!

We are going out to conquer Jaffa. We are going into one of the decisive battles for the independence of Israel. Know who is before you, and remember whom you are leaving behind you. Before you is a cruel enemy who has risen to destroy us. Behind you are parents, brothers, children. Smite the enemy hard. Aim true. Save your ammunition. In battle, show no more mercy to the enemy than he shows mercy to our people. But spare women and children. Whoever raises his hands in surrender has saved his life. You will not harm him. You will be led in the attack by Lieutenant Gideon. You have only one direction: forward!"

The internals in alot of these bogus polls assume a Dem+8 or higher turnout. Which, this will not happen. when you review the internals and apply the real voting bloc (Approx  R+5). Based on this it is at least a Romney+5 popular vote victory. Obama and his Commies will try up to the very end to suppress Republican turnout. Obama is a very disgusting creature that must be defeated.......

340 I love C-Span: The announcer says we are awaiting the final rallies tonight for Romney and Obama. Our approach tonight is that we will cover the rally of whichever candidate comes out first and you can watch the other one on our website. Apparently Bruce Springsteen is now the candidate because they are covering him singing live in Iowa. I remember in 2004 Springsteen was live in Ohio at 11pm, the next day Kerry lost Ohio.

341 I saw Romney Saturday evening in Colorado. He looked at ease, energized, and comfortable. And he's been poring over all the election data with his team. He's got this. Obama's on the stump sweating bullets talking about voting as a means of revenge. It's a crazy contrast. Romney/Ryan 2012

352 FYI, regarding the liberal media trying to manipulate the '00 election, the early call in Fla. not only cost Bush over 50,000 net votes out of the Panhandle, and would have eliminated the recount drama, it absolutely cost Bush New Mexico (a 366 vote margin for Gore) and Wisconsin (0.2%, 5,700 votes, for Gore). The other elephant in the room, surprisingly not mentioned in the main blog post, was the bogus "exit poll" out of PA in '04. The media tried to steal that election for Kerry with a crap survey that said Kerry was winning PA by by 20 points (he actually won it 51-49). That unquestionably took votes away from Bush in the Central, Mountain and Pacific Time Zones. Moral of the story: Ignore the media. Man up. Or woman up. And vote.

I'm new to this whole AoS thing, and I was not a particularly enthusiastic Romney supporter during the Spring and early Summer.  It was always anybody but  the socialist JEG.  Then, "Mittens" turned out to be so much more.

Besides being a winner! A#1, un-ashamed, Capitalist, I see his kids, I've seen the way he looks at Anne, and I've heard about what a Dudley-Do-Right HE REALLY IS (even when nobody's looking)! And, I am a huge fan of the Winter Olympic games.

I was thinking that Perry was gonna' be the deal. Epic Fail.  I love Newt, as a politician  -- but he's such a douche as a man.

Santorum? - the MFM would have made him in a puddle by now.

In the end, who do you really want on your "6"?

One of the other pretenders, The Current FG,  -- or the last-man-standing (BECAUSE he's the right-stuff) Eagle Scout!

So, yeah, I guess I am admitting to myself,  I do have a little man-crush on Willard and teh Ace.

Aren't there a lot of evangelicals in VA? I surely hope they turn out as people want them to.

Posted by: gayle from California at November 05, 2012 10:33 PM (wgmUB)

Yes there are. Jonathan Falwell, son of Jerry, and the Chancellor of Liberty University, has been a big backer of Mitt. Back in May he had Mitt deliver the graduation address at Liberty, and then put a picture of that on Liberty's "magazine" that is inserted into every Virginia newspaper. It was a not so subtle message to evangelicals that it is fine to vote for Mitt.

Plus Franklin Graham, son of Billy, has been a big backer. Again, that is a not so subtle message that they want evangelicals to vote for him.

The wife of our very conservative Presbyterian minister was very excited to talk about this election with us.

Evangelicals will vote for Mitt, and will come out strong for him.
