— Ace Always an excuse. Always a scapegoat.
Now they're blaming Bill Clinton for giving them bad political advice.
Which they took. Which they decided was the best advice available to them.
But it's Clinton's fault.
How Bill Clinton May Have Hurt the Obama Campaignby Matt Bai
...
[T]here is one crucial way in which the 42nd president may not have served the 44th quite as well. In these final weeks before the election, Mr. Clinton’s expert advice about how to beat Mitt Romney is starting to look suspect. You may recall that last spring, just after Mr. Romney locked up the Republican nomination, Mr. Obama’s team abruptly switched its strategy for how to define him. Up to then, the White House had been portraying Mr. Romney much as George W. Bush had gone after John Kerry in 2004 – as inauthentic and inconstant, a soulless climber who would say anything to get the job.
But it was Mr. Clinton who forcefully argued to Mr. Obama’s aides that the campaign had it wrong. The best way to go after Mr. Romney, the former president said, was to publicly grant that he was the “severe conservative” he claimed to be, and then hang that unpopular ideology around his neck.
Matt Bai excuses Team Obama for taking this advice:
...It’s not hard to understand why Mr. Obama and his advisers took Mr. Clinton’s advice to heart; to disregard it would be like telling Derek Jeter, “Hey man, appreciate the input, but I think I know how to make that flip play from the hole just fine on my own.”
It's difficult to find the words. There is just something deeply pathological about Obama and his minions. They can always find an excuse and a scapegoat. Their decisions and their mistakes are never their own-- it's always someone else's fault.
This is clearly intended to absolve the anonymous Obama aides for making a decision that they — and the president — must have signed off on before it was implemented. Bai goes to great lengths to take them off the hook, and even compares their position to a ballplayer who would reject advice from Derek Jeter. In other words Bai is saying that anyone, even really smart political operatives like those working in Obama’s Chicago headquarters, or the top guys themselves like David Axelrod or David Plouffe, had no choice but to bow to the 42nd president’s wisdom....
[T]he idea that it was only Clinton that advocated this strategy or that without his influence the geniuses running the Obama campaign would not have made this mistake is so patently self-serving on the part of his sources that itÂ’s a wonder that a generally savvy observer like Bai doesnÂ’t point this out.
There was some debate over which strategy Obama would pursue, flip-flopper or extremist ideologue. Ramesh Ponuru argued that Obama would obviously pursue the latter -- the former makes him sound too much like a moderate/centrist/independent voter, who tend to be up in the air about policy questions too.
Clinton may have argued for that strategy, but it was approved in Chicago.
And now they want to claim they were just victims, victims yet again.

Should have left it at staffers I guess since McCain's shit came from the top. Also, criticizing Clinton here is a lot like criticizing Palin in '08. Absolutely real conversation from earlier this week:
Liberal acquaintance: "Wow! This is great! Chris Rock just totally schooled Romney on Twitter. Rock said that listening to Romney trying to explain his policy is like listening to a Best Buy salesman try to sell you something when he has no idea how it works. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!"
Me: "Which specific policy of Romney's are you referring to?"
Liberal acquaintance: "---------------------------------------"
He had no answer. Because, you see, for liberal voters, that's what this comes down to. Not policy specifics, about which they're abysmally ignorant, but about Hollyweird limousine-liberal celebrities making flat jokes on Twitter.
Here's the takeaway: this guy has already voted. Locked in. Straight ticket Democratic. His wife has already voted. Straight ticket Democratic. His parents have already voted. Straight ticket Democratic. His sister has already voted. Straight ticket Democratic. I suspect that his dog has already voted straight ticket Democratic.
These people are utter imbeciles, but there are a metric fuckton of them, and THEY HAVE ALREADY VOTED to re-elect Barky. Having Barky lose is NOT a foregone conclusion.
What have you done today to help offset that? If you can vote early, have you? How many friends, family and co-workers have you encouraged to vote? Have you donated? Phone banked? Precinct walked? Helped seniors with their ballots? If you haven't done any of these things, get on it. Now!

Axelfuhrer et. Co. problem was not one of strategy. Romney revealed himself as the candidate who appeared more presidential at a time when the nation is hungry for leadership. However Bubba counseled them, he could not fix the visuals of an angry, petulant manchild opposite Romney during the debates.

Both Clintons understand this. Back during the Dem primaries, I recall Krauthammer making this point. When asked to pick between Obama and Hilary, he picked Hilary, explaining (essentially): "I trust Hilary to occasionally do the right thing, albeit reluctantly, because politics require it. With Obama he'll consistently do the wrong thing, politics be damned, because he is an ideologue."

Allen G - That is what I have been saying all along. Just like there was no way we were going to win in 2008. The facts on the ground matter a lot more than anything else. At the end of the day, you have a President who has presided over a lousy 4 years, who's signature piece of legistration is hugely unpopular, who has basically lost every election in which he has thrown his support (including in NJ). In the end, he just wasn't going to win.

Just because Crom lives in the earth doesn't mean he can't walk in the air. It would be entirely natural for the seat of Crom's power, his literal throne, to be a mountain.

Three weeks ago or so, everyone thought Romney's campaign was dead, and the strategy had worked. Much of Obama's lead was, in fact, attributed to Clinton's convention speech (not that I necessarily buy that). Even so, the election was Obama's to lose.
It was not Clinton's fault that Obama blew the first debate and revived Romney's hopes. Of course the debate was also the opportunity for Romney to disprove the extremist case against him...and he seized it. Even so, a strategy is not a plan to win every moment of a campaign but only to create the best opportunity to win the election.
Obama has also undermined the strategy himself by running to his left and trying to energize his own base.
Given Obama's four-year performance, painting Romney as a flip-flopper would not have been enough to defeat him. Too many voters might have reasoned as Scott Adams has.
This was a good strategy; if team Obama loses, it will be because of poor execution, not choosing the wrong game plan.

Obama's problem is that he demands credit for everything, and then when whatever it is goes wrong, he feels he must shift the blame back onto someone else. Usually it works, because no one wants to find fault with the lightbringer. But he forgets that Bill Clinton is still (incoherently) popular with the Democrat base; more popular than Obama himself. Shifting the blame back on Bubba makes Obama look like a spoiled child. It hurts Bubba not at all, and hurts Barack a LOT.

I think it is a myth to merely state that Obama blew the first debate. All Mitt had to do was appear competant. That's it. A very low bar actually. That he did better than that is pure gravy. But Obama will not lose this election on one debate. That's as wrong as saying McCain lost the election due to Palin.
Posted by: SH at October 25, 2012 11:41 AM (gmeXX)
So to quote Mr. Obama. Bullshit.
I am convinced the Clinton's see themselves as some type of Party saviors (no not that kind of party nitwit). In the sense that Obama's ways of running things will tar Democrats forever and cost them dearly in trust (which I believe is true). It will destroy something bigger for years- their Party.
This is one of the reasons winning this election is so imperative. It will give us an incredible amount of goodwill with which to work. Democrats will rightly remain pariahs for the roughshod way they overrode voters since 2008 and the egregious pursuit of political goals that is obvious to almost every voter.

My opinion of why Romney is not up by 10 points right now is I unfortunately think some of this class warfare nonsense has worked specifically because Romney is so wealthy. Romney being rich and successful tends to draw on the natural human emotion of jealousy and envy.
If Mitt Romney had the same background and net worth as say Tim Pawlenty or Chris Christie, this race wouldn't even be a contest.
I do unfortunately though think social conservatives have hurt the Republican brand at the margins with women by putting their foot in their mouth on some strange issues like contraception and abortion, and Romney has had to work extra hard to woo that group.

3 I have heard your the party of women, while reducing them to a vagina and an abortion
4 I had thought you were concerned about constitutional rights and free speech and now you ignore Americans being put on assassination lists
5 I had thought you cared about the children until you decided full term abortion was acceptable.
6 I had believed you were concerned about the over-reach of the govt in your life, while now you accept them being the decision makers over your wombs and final days.
7 I have watched you threaten businessmen and the rich with death for your guy, for gooodies for yourselves, while those that have money in your party refuse to donate to the irs.
8 i had thought you were squeamish at religiosity in our govt, yet you made a man your messiah.

This is one of those things that irritates me about "The Walking Dead." I love the show, but I can't be alone in wanting to grab a hacksaw and chop off about two feet of Lori's hair. The world's come to an end and she's lugging around a head of (admittedly gorgeous) hair that's just BEGGING to become infested with lice before being grabbed by a hungry zombie who will then proceed to eat her face off as she struggles to get away. And all of this during a hot Georgia summer dripping with humidity. Good grief, if it was me I'd have cut my hair as short as possible the first time I found a pair of scissors and never looked back.
...
That was a tangent, wasn't it? Sorry, it's almost quittin' time and my mind is wandering.

You are so brave. I mean really. It has to be so hard supporting a candidate that has all but given up and acts like he doesn't want to be President anymore. You must feel abandoned after all the support you've given. Don't worry, it's ok to cry, when you are so totally let down by someone you believed in. The sooner you get through the bargaining and accept that Obama just really doesn't want to win, you will be so much better off. But don't rush it too much. Go at your own pace, spout a little bile here if it helps.

Muslims crushed Christians in Lebanon. America did nothing. If you're a Muslim and convert to Christianity in Afghanistan, you can be killed, under the constitution American soldiers defend. In Iraq, again, Muslims destroyed Christians and America did not even protest. In Egypt, the Arab Spring has been nothing but bad for Christians; apparently that's fine with America.
American foreign policy is run by people who don't even like Christians, much less care about Christian interests.

THIS THIS THIS!! ARRRGH! This drives me crazy! I actually sent that question to The Talking Dead this past week because it drives me nuts! Just what is the difference between being actively bitten or scratched by a zombie, which apparently leads to certain zombification, and being passively infected (or re-infected if you will) by ingesting zombie blood, or getting zombie blood in a cut on your hand, or eating food that's been killed with zombie-blooded weapons, etc, etc. It makes no sense! The group gets zombie blood and gore spattered all over them on a daily basis, rarely have a chance to do laundry or bathe properly, yet none of them suffer any ill effects.
You'd think with all the knives and machetes and other bladed weapons they use to kill zombies they'd all have cuts and slices all over their hands that would make it easy for the Zombie Disease to just set up in their blood and turn them without ever being attacked outright.
ARRRGH!

His debates were a masterstroke of discipline: he knew exactly what he was doing, aimed every one of his debates at getting undecided voters and neither let Obama bait him or gave the right red meat that might turn off the Luntz's Dunces he needed. It isn't an accident he got a bounce from every single debate. I am tired of Akin's on our side who don't or won't understand you have to WIN first if you want to change policy.

1. Infectious dose: a lot of times is bigger than 1 virus. You may have some ability to fight of the disease at initial infection. Your body does this 1000X a day and you never know it. Particularly with staph.
2. Infection path. Changing the path into the body changes the infectious dose or in some cases completely eliminates the chance of infection. Ingesting is a terrible path that most viruses will not survive thanks to stomach acid. Additionally inhalation though a bit easier is still a tough path and may not be adequate.
3. Survival outside a host. Some viruses cannot live for very long at all outside an active host. So tainted materials may not be tainted for very long.

OT, but this headline from the sidebar is hilarious:
Actual Headline: "Despite recent killings, Lamoine (Maine) still ‘a great place to live,’ say selectmen"
I don't know why on earth the Bangor Daily News would use that as a headline. That's not even the crux of the article, which is about a young man who killed his father and grandfather earlier this week, then was killed himself by the police. I mean, if this were something that had been happening regularly in itty bitty Lamoine (Population: 1,600), then I could see the point of making your headline "Lamoine is still a great place to live!" (Of course, if this had been happening regularly in itty bitty Lamoine I doubt there'd be anyone left alive in town to read about it.) But one unhinged Mainer tragically murdering two members of his own family and then being killed himself does not an endemic culture of murder make.
It's almost like poor little Maine wanted to say, "Look! Look! We're gritty, too! Bad things happen here, tooooo!"
*pats Maine on the head and gives it a cookie* You're so cute!

Obama's gonna cry "racism" 'cause he won't get re-elected and WilliJeff did.
Then again, internationally, instead of destroying the entire Balkan region as Obama has destroyed the Arab region propagandizing "Spring", Bill Clinton involved us in one illegal war which didn't lose to terrorists our US Embassies complete with Ambassadors and diplomatic entourage in either Sarajevo or Pristina.

I'm sure TFG will get their endorsement, and I don't know what the text under the headlines says, but for anyone who glances at the page, it looks good for Romney. Megyn Kelly had it up on her show earlier today.

A few little bones to the Center, and he probably would have been comfortably reelected.
Like with ObamaCare, imagine if he just put a bit of tort reform on the extreme end of things, or allowed health insurance to be sold across state lines. Little things like that would have made a big difference.
I've never seen a Democrat make such a play for his left-wing base with no interest in triagulation, usually conservatives have problems because Democrats masquerade as pro-choice Republicans.

He's leaving his messes behind, like a big titty baby waiting for his diapers to get changed for him by a responsible adult.
Small wonder his leadership from behind is ruinous.
At least the Egyptians have taken out one Libyan suspect, el-Azizi.
(Reuters, Cairo, 7 hours ago)
A Libyan militant suspected by Egypt of involvement in last month's attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya has been killed during a raid by Egyptian security forces in Cairo, a security official said on Thursday. The Libyan was killed on Wednesday in a raid targeting him and other militants with suspected links to al Qaeda in Cairo's eastern district of Nasr City, the official said. Four Egyptian militants were detained in the operation, he added. The Libyan, identified as Karim Ahmed Essam el-Azizi, was killed by a bomb he had tried to use against the security forces during the raid, the security official said.

1. Infectious dose: a lot of times is bigger than 1 virus. You may have some ability to fight of the disease at initial infection. Your body does this 1000X a day and you never know it. Particularly with staph.
2.
Infection path. Changing the path into the body changes the infectious
dose or in some cases completely eliminates the chance of infection.
Ingesting is a terrible path that most viruses will not survive thanks
to stomach acid. Additionally inhalation though a bit easier is still a
tough path and may not be adequate.
I get that. But for instance, early in this past week's episode, a character was scratched by a zombie. Just scratched. Not even a very deep scratch at that. But the other characters were ready to write him off as incurably infected.
So then let's talk about bladed weapons again. If you use a knife regularly, you're probably going to cut yourself. It just happens. If you use a knife violently, you're even MORE likely to cut yourself. The preferred method of zombie killing in TWD is via up close and personal contact, usually involving a knife, axe or other sharp or heavy object shoved into the brain. So let's say that, in the process of killing a shitload of Walkers, you've cut yourself on the machete you like to use for killing shitloads of Walkers. Let's say it's a relatively superficial cut -- not much more than a deep papercut -- across the palm of your hand. As you continue killing zombies, the scratch on your hand gets doused repeatedly in gallons of zombie blood, brain matter, and goo.
How is the latter scenario markedly different from the former, where the character was simply scratched by a zombie?
3. Survival outside a host.
Some viruses cannot live for very long at all outside an active host. So
tainted materials may not be tainted for very long.
My only problem with this is that the hosts who are carrying this contagion are themselves dead. What would prevent the virus (is it a virus? Do we know that for sure? I forget) from simply hanging out in its blob of gore and viscera and waiting to be picked up by another host, be they living or dead? If the virus doesn't require a living host, then how does it know when it's been separated from its DEAD host?
Again, though, I think way too much. It's a show about dead people reanimating. It really doesn't deserve this much critical analysis. lol!

The problem with the strategy is that (1) Romney does not have a record, or even a platform, of "severe conservatism," (2) he has a clean background that makes personal attacks very difficult, (3) he picked an equally squeaky-clean and highly likable running mate, and (4) everyone except the most partisan, govt-teat types is mentally exhausted and looking for some hope that things can get better. All Romney and Ryan had to do is appear like reasonable, well-intentioned, competent politicians and Bill's whole argument was shot.
He would have been better off going after the windsock/Etch-a-Sketch attack, imho.

Not really, because the same can be said about Obama himself. In order to keep his own record out of bounds so people could forget, he really can't talk about issues himself. Plus as we've seen, he and his people can't keep a coherent line going themselves.
In the first debate, the people would have seen he's got convictions and earnestness, too. So that program would have been exploded just the same.
When an incumbent can't play the "I did well" or "I have a plan" cards himself, the only one left is "He isn't fit". Both reasons for unfit, too scary conservative or too wishy washy are likely to become undone if they are based on nothing.

Obama is the *epitome* of a flip-flop/ etch-a-sketch politician. Romney would've hung all of Obama's etch-a-sketchiness around his neck, and the media would've been forced to report it.
But no one can accuse Obama of being a "severe conservative." So, they went with that.

Walking Dead does not have a highly infectious zombie 'virus'. The comics have examples of people being bitten, and then shortly thereafter amputating said body part, and surviving. So the assumption is that the zombie virus in Walking Dead has a fairly low rate of transmission -- and much more slowly than the rage virus.

The quote about not being able to dismiss the advice of "Derek Jeter," well, Obama defeated HRC *and* her husband. Anyone as full of himself as that--who thinks he knows more about every position in his cabinet than the cabinet secretary does--he's not going to have trouble dismissing the advice of Bill Clinton.
Even so, what advice would you expect Bill "Triangulation" Clinton to give you? How did Bill win re-election in 1996, which many saw this election to be an echo of? That is, Clinton won as a hopey-changey guy in a weak economy, tried to pass an unpopular health care plan, and was trounced in the mid-terms. He won re-election by pivoting to the center and painting Gingrich and Dole as right-wing extremists. So, if your Obama and you ask which path to choose, what do you expect him to say?

In another potential blow for the president's Ohio reelection campaign, Jeep, the rugged brand President Obama once said symbolized American freedom, is considering giving up on the United States and shifting production to China.
Such a move would crash the economy in towns like Toledo, Ohio, where Jeeps are made and supplied, and rob the community of the economic security they thought Obama's auto bailout assured them.

417 - here is how it was done:
Jack Crabb: General, you go down there.
General Custer: You're advising me to go into the Coulee?
Jack Crabb: Yes sir.
General Custer: There are no Indians there, I suppose.
Jack Crabb: I didn't say that. There are thousands of Indians down there. And when they get done with you, there won't be nothing left but a greasy stain. This ain't the Washite River, General, and them ain't helpless women and children waiting for you. They're Cheyenne brave, and Sioux. You go down there, General, if you've got the nerve.
General Custer: Still trying to outsmart me, aren't you, mule-skinner. You want me to think that you don't want me to go down there, but the subtle truth is you really *don't* want me to go down there!

I lost interest in The Walking Dead by the end of the first season. I stopped caring about any of the adult characters -- they all seemed to be a bunch of dumbf*cks making stupid decisions. The faster they die and stop bothering me the better.
