Team Romney: Don't Panic

As Gabe noted earlier there's been a bit of a freak out by Republicans over Obama's post-convention bounce. Apparently it's gotten the attention of the Boston brain trust so they had the campaign pollster put out an "all is well" memo. The fact that they had to do that sort of belies the message but whatever.

Don't get too worked up about the latest polling. While some voters will feel a bit of a sugar-high from the conventions, the basic structure of the race has not changed significantly. The reality of the Obama economy will reassert itself as the ultimate downfall of the Obama Presidency, and Mitt Romney will win this race.
In his acceptance speech, President Obama did not offer any solutions for the millions of Americans unemployed or underemployed. But his convention speech was not the only big letdown to voters, as Americans also dealt with yet another dismal jobs report last week. President Obama is the only president in modern American history to stand before the American people asking for re-election with this many Americans struggling to find work. The key numbers in this election are the 43 straight months of 8% or higher unemployment, the 23 million Americans struggling to find work, and the 47 million Americans who are on food stamps.
Today, there is no question: Americans are not better off than we were four years ago, and that is why President Obama has struggled in this race. The truth is that some of President ObamaÂ’s allies are claiming victory, but others are acknowledging the unsustainable position in which they find themselves. This is evidenced in a recent quote in The New York Times by an Obama Administration official saying, Â“ItÂ’s certainly not what I would call the position we wanted to be in at this point in the raceÂ…HeÂ’s going to have to make the case that we wouldnÂ’t even be at 8 percent if it werenÂ’t for him.Â”

He then goes on to list a number of factors, some reasonable, some not so much to buttress their argument.

There are two points he makes that fits nicely with a post I was planning on doing before I saw this memo.

Historical Data: Political campaign historians will recall President Jimmy Carter led Ronald Reagan by a near double digit margin late in the fall in 1980. In that race, the voters made their decision based on the key issues confronting the nation and it determined the outcome. On the economy, the most important issue of this race, Mitt Romney leads by 51%-45%, according to the most recent CNN/ORC poll.
Targeted Campaign: The Romney-Ryan campaign is running deeply local and targeted efforts in each of the states focusing on the voter groups that will make the difference on Election Day. Anyone asserting a Â“one-size-fits-all-campaignÂ” effort is being put forward is simply misinformed, as evidenced by the 15 different ads released by the Romney Ryan campaign this past Friday and now running in nine states, including Wisconsin.

My original point was going to be...counter CAC, ENOUGH with the damn poll watching. Polling is an artifact of the campaign, it's the result of what candidates do and say. We and Romney should spend more time trying to move the conversation and not worrying as much about the horse race aspect. If you have solid ideas and make your case for them, you will move the needle.

That's the lesson of Reagan and Clinton, the last two challengers to unseat an incumbent. Yes, they pointed to the failures of Carter and G.H.W. Bush but they also created a vision of the future, a pro-active reason to vote for them. Reagan had restoring American pride and Clinton had an appeal to youthful energy and vision.

Mitt's entire message is, "Obama sucks". This is true but he's yet to make the other half of the case...He's awesome. It takes both parts of the equation to win. There's still time for Mitt to do it but less and less.

Yes, Team Mitt is micro targeting a relative handful of voters in a small number of states but if doing that leaves a larger hole in the greater electorate and election story line, you are putting all your eggs in a very small and fragile basket.

Am I worried about the outcome of the campaign? Of course. It's hard to beat a sitting President, even in tough times. It's harder still when you have a challenger who quite frankly is not a very good candidate or running a very good campaign. But this is the guy we've chosen. I don't think we're going to see a lot of ads featuring the folks from Boston who spoke about what a kind and caring guy Mitt is. I'm not sure why they want to leave that bullet unfired but it appears they do.

And don't tell me he shouldn't have to run ads like that or pump himself up. What you're arguing for then is taking politics out of a political campaign. See the problem with that?

The good news is the first point Team Mitt makes in their memo...historically people break late for a challenger. Its a two step process for voters, deciding they really don't like the incumbent and then later deciding the challenger is an acceptable risk (better the Devil you know and all).

I still think Mitt will pull this out but looking at it now, it's going to be a near run thing.

Play around with it a bit and you'll see how much of an uphill climb it is for Romney. You can also put your results on your facebook and Twitter feeds directly from your phone/tablet.

Each Presidential election is a unique, discrete event--you cannot conclude "well, Reagan was here in the polling, so really we're OK." Ultimately, it boils down to the choices the candidates make, which are predictable in that they are based upon how each candidate campaigned and performed in the past--we know that based upon his previous victories, the Verminous Won will unleash hell from every direction upon Romney.

If I recall correctly, ace was giving up pron because it was a time-waster. Why? Because he was getting entirely too selective in his pr0n viewing habits. This President has sat on his ass for four years, done nothing he promised, worked on everything important to him- not us and presided over the worst period of economic activity in history. He has historically increase the debt, has a record on net job loses, never passed a budget, stolen from Medicare and has no plan to deal with entitlements. We get that. Most people get that. Now what are you going to do Romney? Start talking more about your plans, which are good ones- dammit.

69 I can tell you why they're leaving the "testimonials from folks in Boston" bullet unfired -- Mormons aren't comfortable mixing their church affairs with politics. Everyone *loved* that piece of the convention, and so did I -- but it was a bit uncomfortable for me to watch because we try to be circumspect about our practices and not herald whatever good things we might do too much. It's the way we're brought up.

I'm guessing that the campaign advisors prevailed in convincing Mitt that those people *had* to be part of the convention. But it might be harder to convince him to put them on TV ads.

75 Heard a story on the radio today about Obama outpacing Romney on fundraising. Some commentator was saying that the Romney campaign had been coasting on the story that they were outraising for the past three months, and now the tables have turned! Err, except I listen to the radio on the way to work every day and I have never heard them say that the Romney campaign was outraising Obama. Of course, the radio news guy ends the story by saying that the Republicans in total have WAY outraised Obama. So, weird, huh>

Again look at the Swing State Poll from Rasmussen...this is the one that matters.....46/45 Obama after all that bounce from the convention and on the weekend. Come on that is no bounce at all and remember that includes Penn and Michigan...states allegedly Obama is doing okay in...that is not good for a bounce at all....

Here is how you get 50 percent....Simple the lowest day of the sample is gone....Thursday....okay Friday (which probably was biggest and then Saturday) are keep in the sample....That means Sunday Obama probably polled around 49 percent....but Friday and Saturday most likely 50 or 51 percent...a three point bounce from convention....you take out Thursday which probably at Obama at 47-48.....then you take Fri/Sat/Sun...51/50/49 and Bam you have your 50 percent....Now Saturday probably was 51 percent as well....That is why you have such a jump in Sunday's poll from 46 to 49...Friday and Saturday must have been 50-51 percent each day!! which makes sense. Also what helped on Sunday's numbers was because Wednesday the weakest night for Obama dropped off the Polling...so you have Thursday, Friday and Saturday(the best nights)...hence the three point bounce that we saw yesterday....But Sunday must have only been 49 because Obama's bounce dropped to 1 point. Remember as well....Obama always picks up a point or two on weekends....you can find this throughout the Polling...Weekend poll are the most inaccurate historically because Repub by nature are undersampled...that is Historical Fact...why do you think elections happen on Tuesdays and most polls are done during the weekdays? PPP which released its Ohio BS yesterday did Weekend Polling(Dem adv) and hides their true slant by claiming 4 Plus Dems when really many of the Independents that they claim are really Dems. It is no accident PPP teams up with the Daily Kos and RCP keeps the (D) after them. Believe me that PPP poll was more likely PLUS 8-9 Dems....PPP is hiding the true slant because people like Ed Morrissey at HotAir picks apart theri samples....what better way to hide additionally Dems then to claim them as Independents!! Please remember Akin...PPP Plus 9 Repub sample gave Akin 43/42 over Claire...yeah right. PPP then followed 10 days later with another poll magically with only Plus 4 Repub and Claire in the lead...

Remember on Aug 3rd...Romney was up 47/44 on Obama

Remember on Aug 6th....Obama was up 47/43 on Romney....That was just in one weekend...7 point swing and on Jobs Numbers for Aug.

These numbers are from Rasmussen.

Gallup has Obama at 49 two days in a row and Approval Dropped from 52 to 50 and that is on Weekend! I would suspect today it will stay at 49...could go to 50 but that would be Weekend again which favors Dems.

Key Swing State Polling....Rasmussen 46/45 Obama after all this bounce BS! that is not good for Obama at all....and some really good ads came out yesterday from the Super Pacs (at least in Central Florida) and they were very good....better than Mitt's own ads....

As Steffy kept pushing for Ryan to say he would accept some kind of taxation--you could see Ryan calculating the "what-if's" in his head. While Ryan never said he would accept new taxes- he actually said their program is aimed at creating new jobs/fewer regs/more work but if the Dims came at them with a tax proposal, it would depend on the "quality" of the deal- i.e.. did it help create new jobs/fewer regs/more work? But that was enough for ABC to (dishonestly) run it's Ryan doesn't rule out new taxes headline as EeyoreChow and Axelturd Kibble. My advice Paul- learn to stay directly on message and push back under repetitive questioning. Add simple example of a tax/reg that killed jobs applied to your quality of the deal statement with a wrap-up saying "But, what tax ever created a job?" would have been perfect. Remember you're going t get a lot of crap thrown at you - you don't need to run the odds on crap. And that will be all Biden has. Feeling damn good today- will contribute to R&R again.

Can you really see any of the other guys (orladies) winning as our candidate right now? Sure, it might be entertaining (Gingrich) or inspiring (Palin) or painful (Santorum)---but the reality is that we have an extremely polarized electorate and Romney is and was the man with the ground game and the money that it is going to take to penetrate the hearts and minds of the swing voters. It's going to be weird the next few months.....if it looks like Mitt has it in the bag, the markets will probably be relatively unchanged. If it really looks like Barky is winning, that ought to make the markets nervous as investors look at their options and decide to pull out of the US.

But then you have the Soros money and trickery which can send the market whichever way Soros wants it to move.

I'm going to have to take issue with your contention that Mitt isn't a good candidate or running a good campaign, DrewM. While he wasn't the first choice of many Morons, he is doing better than most of us expected. His campaign's mastery of social media is pretty good, and his response time to the bullshit spewed by teh SCCOAMF's minions is lightning-quick.

In addition, he has concrete plans to get the country going again and is projecting confidence in the country. Then there's his record of success vs. the fucking that JEF's been doing to us.

I'm damn sure not gonna let some (very) temporary poll bounce sway me in the least. I'm still not convinced these polls are accurate in any way. They're probably a PsyOps move on the part of the Dims and the MFM (BIRM) since they're starting to understand that no one trusts their "reporting" anymore.

I must disagree with you here, Drew. Far from being his entire message, Team Romney hasn't played enough of the "Obama sucks" refrain. I think he's been doing a great job of affirming himself as a good, honest man, and I think the convention helped seat that image in people's minds. What the campaign needs to do now, IMHO, is start to take out the big guns and talk about what Obama has or hasn't done and, more importantly, WHAT HE'LL DO with a second term.

So far most of this heavy lifting has been done by PACs. I know Romney and Crew don't want to have a heavily negative campaign, and I get that. But there's so much negative in the current asshole administration that it HAS to get out there from the campaign itself.

And, and this is very important to remember, this is a bump-inflated number. Most convention bumps are entirely erased in less than a month, if Nate Silver, the bastard, is to be believed. That means Romney is slightly ahead. I personally think he's more than slightly ahead because he'll get the undecideds and their will be some vote switching at the end as well as non-voting on the Dem side. I'm not whistling past the graveyard but I hope the Dems are partying hardy. Overconfidence is a wonderful fruit to pluck and eat.

These polls are hard to believe when they're skewed so heavily Dim. Also look at other polls such as Right/Wrong Track for the country: that ones 30-70. Romney score higher in other areas too, such as trustworthiness to handle the economy. Pew will soon come out with a poll saying Obama's up 10, if past polls are any indicator. Are they right? Nobody knows because there is no way to test them ... until election day. The numbers of all the polls start to cluster with about a 7 point spread from top to bottom (which befits a 3 point margin of error). Today's polls tell us something ... but not very articulately.

Part of the reason of the convention bounce is that people affiliated with a party tend to get fired up for their party. So, PPP noted that the percentage of Dems voting for Obama had jumped.

This will come back down, especially with the Romney ad blitz.

They're vaguely useful as a very narrow snapshot of current sentiment within the even more narrow limitations of a given poll's methodology. There's too much random (and deliberate) noise to treat polls as anything more than that.

Contra Drew's sentiments, I think R/R have been doing a good job campaigning. They've excelled at pushing issues that the MSM would rather not talk about, and proactively taking over the issues Obama wants to talk about. Medicare, for example. They need to keep that up and really bombard the airwaves with their ads and their own statements. Especially cable channels. Make news, guys, don't follow it.

Look, the Obama campaign is spreading rumors that Romney sais his family once owned slaves and that he wants to repeal the MLK Birthday holiday. Does this sound like a campaign that's winning? They're terrifed that black voter enthusiasm has dropped off a cliff.

Or, you can look at it this way. In 2008, Obama won the election by about 10 million votes, and 8 million of those were young people and the other 2 million were the extra turnout of blacks. And that was with a historical collapse in GOP turnout. Even if Romney didn't turn a single vote from a Catholic or a white blue-collar voter or a married white woman, he'll probably win just based on the dropoff in turnout by young people and blacks and an increased GOP turnout.

This is why Axelrod is sending out all the concern trolls, trying to demoralize us while spreading race-baiting lies about Romney to black voters.

All I see are are a few campaign ads staring Clinton these days. He says that tax cuts at the upper levels and regulations are what got us in this mess in the first place. Talk about fantasy economics! Doesn't ANYBODY ask how either of those things caused a meltdown in the housing market, where "government sponsored entities" Fannie and Freddie were at the epicenter?

It's so ironic how they used to call "W" a liar, when he was one of the few presidents who was practically always levelling with us. I didn't always like what he said, but I was pretty sure that HE at least believed it. Clinton did OK, but pretty much every time I heard him speak there was ALWAYS some level of deception going on.

He knows what he has to do to win - hence, the Ryan veep pick - and he's got a crapload of money with which to make the case for his 5-point economic plan. And there is absolutely no reason to think he won't do (or isn't doing) precisely that.

If Obama wins, it won't be because Governor Romney blew it; it'll be because the country is really and truly lost.

BTW, I have looked up Romney's ancestry and can add a number of points.

1) Most of his ancestors showed up around the same time that slavery was being abolished.

2) None of his ancestors lived in the South.

That being said, it's possible that a far-back ancestor could have owned a slave or two - that stuff occurred occaisionally in the Northeast into the early 1800s, before it was outlawed there. But it seems kind of unlikely.

Tell those a-holes to leave my 11th cousin alone on our roots!! We're mostly the guys who FREED the slaves (and we're still waiting for our "Thank you").

I do feel he could do more-such as going on the Mike Rowe show and showing he can do "dirty jobs", but I like what he is doing so far. The polls can not be trusted. Yes and no. Romney lacks the basic charisma that put guys like Reagan, Clinton, and Obama in office, but few do and that isn't everything. If you look at the most important issue of our day - the economy, the President completely ignored it for his first term, while Mitt Romney is a rock star at turning around financially troubled organizations. With that track record, and with his running mate's detailed knowledge of the inner workings of the governments finances, you couldn't ask for a better solution to the country's biggest problem.

You're also ignoring that the Romney campaign hasn't committed the usual blunders that most campaigns suffer. They have to look at made-up gaffes, like Romney in the UK, his dog (30 years ago), or write pages and pages about his being mean to some kid (50 years ago), to find something to complain about. He may be missing out on doing some things right, but he hasn't been making the mistakes, and is still very much in the game - dispite having a massive propaganda machine (the media) going a few steps beyond their usual effort.

Romney is not the problem, if figures like Nixon and Bush Sr can win landslide elections, so can Romney who I would argue is much better than either. To say nothing about George W. Bush who was the worst politician I've seen in my lifetime, yet still won 2 national elections.

If a Republican can't win the White House now in an economic catastrophe the likes of which we haven't seen since the Great Depression, then there's really 2 factors:

1) enough voters no longer care about the economy because so many get a check from the government that supposedly never goes broke. (I think this is part of it, but how many "more" federal workers has Obama really put to work, maybe 1% of the voting population?)

2) social issues are more important, and this country has become so secular that voters are willing to vote themselves another depression if it means the "Akins" of the world get sidelined (this is actually bigger than most conservatives realize)

Number 2 is the only one I see the GOP can address.

Correct, and that's what I think he does now. Part 2 of the campaign was "here's Mitt and why he's not the soulless robot the left keeps trying to say he is" and part 3 is "we have a lot of money to sell his ideas."
Now that the convention is over, kids are at school, vacation is over, and football season has started up, they can get peoples' attention and I suspect that's what is next on the agenda. Over the coming months I expect - and hope - the blitz will be "here's how we're better."
Because as annoyed at Obama as people are - and the left seriously underestimates this - it isn't enough to just dislike him. He's the incumbent, so he wins by default unless you can present yourself as a better candidate. Its an easy sell, but they have got to do it.
My advice is two pronged: first, sell the idea of Obama as a failed employee, he tried, he did his best, and he blew it. Run ads with his own words saying this, there are several quotes you can use.
Second, push your ideas and how they will help. This economy cannot turn around until government gets off the backs of business and someone who actually knows what they are doing is in charge.
It doesn't hurt to keep poking Obama with how bad he is, just make that your third message, after "here's how we'll do it better" and "here's Mitt the great guy."
