That's No Moon -Gaming Thread!
— Gang of Gaming Morons!

Zakn here to go through some Gaming Stuff!

Afternoon/Evening M&M's! I hope you had/are having a great weekend. I ended up working alot this week, so there's not alot from me this week.

First off, I would like to encourage everyone that has a game (or games) they play to do a write up of things that are going on with the stuff you play, and send it to me at aoshqgaming at gmail dot com. I'll help you with any editing that is needed and we'll get it up with Attribution.

Luckily I was able to watch a decent amount of the WCS Korea Nationals (Star Craft 2), but more on that later from our resident E-Sports Expert. Despite the debacle that happened at Streetfighter X Tekken (And what happened at Eve Fanfest this year), It's really cool to be able see streams/Casts really go mainstream for just about every game. Although with that greater amount of coverage, goes greater amounts of scrutiny, visibility, and accountability to the larger Gaming Community. We are going through some growing pains, but alot of this is required as Gaming further enters the larger cultural Mainstream. I even saw stories about what happened at StreetFigher X Tekken in my local paper. Granted it was a two month old story at that point, but still. (If you don't know what happened, Google/Bing is your friend)

More below the fold. Since I was working so much, I really just played on my 3DS during breaks/lunch. I'm not planning on buying the new XL version, but it's out there, so check it out if you are looking for handheld gaming options. Mostly I played the New Super Mario 2.

It is really a game all about the bling. Get that money! It's refreshing to not be totally stressed out like I was getting in some of the Special levels in Super Mario 3D Land. Perhaps that comes later.

Whats really notable about this game though, was that it was available day 1 in their E-Store. I came home from work Sunday morning, connected to my wifi, and downloaded the game. In theory Nintendo is going to do more of this, and it makes sense for them. They charged me the full ride, but didn't need to manufacture/ship the cart or give retailers a cut. As this goes on, I hope they cut prices for "E-versions" ala Kindle/Ebook stores to maximize their First Party content. And if you are Nintendo, that's really all you have. They need to leverage their first party titles to push sales and get an installed base, then push that their platform is different enough to merit 3rd party development. I think the 3DS is different enough to do that, I'm less sure on things like Wii U. It wouldn't shock me in the least to see Nintendo death spiral and go tits up if they continue to make poor decisions.

I've been playing some Eve too, but there's not alot of news that I know about. The War in the North has been a real grind. Much more enjoyable than some of the massive structure shoots recently, but never the less grindy and against very competent foes. In fact the most Notable things have been Titans being Stupid. If you want more news on that, Check the site I just linked. They have CEO updates from all sides and Battle Reports from the notable encounters.

Welp this happened as I was writing this post. Ouch. I was a "Hero" Dictor so what my job was to get bubbles on as many of the Dreadnaughts as possible before they could exit. Someone frapsed it, so maybe there will be video for next week. The Killboards are still syncing, but it was pretty one sided. This is very indicitive of the War in the North. One side messes up, gets the crap kicked out of it, the other side messes up, they get the crap kicked out of them. Konkers.

If you do play Eve, Don't forget to join the Moron channel, we really are getting some decent numbers and it's been really fun. It's AoSHQ

If you want to chat with me Grab me on Twitter or email me at aoshqgaming at gmail dot com

Thanks And See you Next week. (Maybe)

Ola, Dude coming to ya from the wonderful world of Tyria.

Well, not only did Curiosity get delayed, it also got a new name, Curiosity: What's Inside The Cube. Personally, I can't but help love Peter Molyneux no matter how hard he trolls people even when he doesn't mean to, he just has grand ideas that hasn't worked in almost 20 years. It's a social experiment that he's conducting and I can't wait. All it is, is a giant cube made up of a bunch of other cubes and everyone sits there tapping on it till there can only be one to find out what the fuck is in the cube (I personally have money riding on it being a pic of his balls) or at least till someone cracks it. It's up to that person to tell people what they saw as that is it.

Speaking of trolling, Square Enix knew how to push people's buttons with their announcement of an announcement with the possible reappearance of The World Ends With You. With dashed hopes, the announcement ended up being a iOS port and a OST. Fucking assholes. I REALLY want a new game as the first was really damn good but not a damn port. I'll take the soundtrack though as it had good music.
Top it off, Square announced a new Final Fantasy game....for iOS and Android for a whopping $28.99. Dunno why they are going back to the well of the structure of FFIV: After Years considering it was a stinker and being episodic made it even worse.

With Kinect sales lagging, Microsoft dropped the price to $110. Of course, if they wanted to boost sales, they would release the delayed Crimson Dragon on XBLA considering they delayed it a week before it was supposed to be released and we've never heard from it since. I want a new Panzer Dragoon
Somehow Interplay found a way to make hate them even more as they're bringing back the name Black Isle Studios. Just no.....NO.

Some great news came out of Gamescon last weekend, a game that I REALLY want to play, Tokyo Jungle for the PS3 got a US release date and price. Hits September 25th at the low price of $15. I dunno how to explain it so here is a trailer that will make you want to buy it on PSN when it releases

Of course bad news wise, the Vita has been stillborn with it racking up a measly 2.2 million units sold in a span of 7 months worldwide. Sad as the system is nice but everything thing else sucks (online and game wise). I'm stupid for buying one, I should have just bought a PSP since that is what I use it for anyways.

Telltale let loose that the third episode of The Walking Dead is finally done and it should be out this week or next since they're doing a simultaneous release across all platforms. Took them long enough. (Zakn here, yea it's about f'ing time)

Even though it will never be made, at least Uncharted got a decent pair of new writers to tackle a script. A marriage of Uncharted and the National Treasure films should be a good pairing.

In the world of eSports, next weekend is The International as 16 teams (14 invites and 2 qualifying teams) duke it out in a DOTA 2 tournament with a whopping $1.5 million payout. Steam released a spectator client (if you aren't in the DOTA 2 beta) where you can watch it with play by play (more than likely Toby for the English caster) and the ability to control the camera by yourself. Should be fun.

The Korean Nationals wrapped up bright and early Saturday morning with Creator coming from the loser's bracket toppling Squirtle in two sets of games. Standard PvP finals with non stop cheese though it being Creator doing the cheesing is interesting as I didn't think he had it in him as his play style is more defensive but he pulled it out with the macros that he uses in online games and not games in a arena. A couple of screw ups but still great play from him. Hopefully this is a sign to come that he's matured a bit as a gamer to be able to do it live which is odd considering he is still only 16. (Zakn here, it was a really compelling set of matches, and we'll get them linked when they hit youtube next week)

The big news of the esport scene this past week is one giant clusterfuck between KeSPA and ESF. KeSPA is back into their old playbook of strong arming the competition when they are holding a weak hand. KeSPA is a conglomerate of sponsors reconized by the South Korean government who makes their players sign contracts that dictate where they can and can't play. ESF is a quasi Starcraft 2 players union who were taken aback when KeSPA reneged on their their partnership between ESF, Blizzard and KeSPA which would have had KeSPA players playing on GOMTV and ESF players playing on KeSPA's starleagues (which is the big time for esports in Korea). And of course this is happening on the eve of the next starleague that starts on Tuesday. So in retaliation, ESF pulled their players from the tourney which is half the field. In trying to save face in losing half the field after they built them up to the KeSPA crowd, KeSPA said that they would play in the not the next season on GOMTV but the following season. It being KeSPA who is a bunch of notorious cocksuckers who have no problem with backstabbing as long as they stay in power, ESF still told KeSPA to go fuck themselves and they won't be part of the upcoming starleague.
On one hand, I grasp that KeSPA is trying to save their players from embarrassment of getting crushed by ESF (especially their big name Flash not doing too hot in the transition between SC1 and SC2) but on the other hand ESF and GOMTV has laid the groundwork of a thriving SC2 scene of where the best play be it Korean or foreigners with a very open policy of letting players play in any tourneys they want (they go out of their way to reschedule games when players are here in the States or Europe playing). And unlike KeSPA who has a walled in approach of keeping the scene homogenized, GOMTV has made it global with having the best English announcers and having specials with the players for the outside world.

it's what happens when I wait till the last second to write something up.

Still don't like the ESF/KeSPA write up. Wrote it three different ways and they all sucked. It's hard to write esport stuff for people who don't follow it themselves

13 Any BF3 morons out there on Xbox Live?  There's a pretty good server out there called "The Gentlemen's Club" that works well for middling players like me (as opposed to twitchy 13-year olds that know more homophobic and racial slurs than I do.  Also, their logo is that painting of Reagan riding a velociraptor, so it can't be all bad.

Because the gimmicky ones (such as TK's Wave, anything with hyper inaccurate multiple rockets) get old after a while.  Or maybe I'm just too set in my sniping/incendiary ways.

27 After ignoring it for 3-4 years I gathered that there was more to Titan Quest than I thought and I picked it up on a good sale early this month. If you like action RPGs in the Dungeon Siege (1)/Diablo/Torchlight vein... then you'll like TQ. Note that TQ-Gold (the main game the expansion - which is the only way you should buy it) is frequently on sale at the usual download outlets for $4-5. So get that, get the 1.17 fan patch which fixes some bugs (have to use the fan patch since the company is no more) and you have one hell of a game. What makes TQ standout from the other Action RPGs is the skill trees. Lots of ARPGs have skill trees - but TQ's skill trees are tremendous. Shortly after you start the game your character picks one of the 9 skills (warrior, hunter, dream-master... you get the idea) then, when he makes 8th level), you have the option of adding 1 of the other 8 you didn't pick. So there's a buttload of possible ways to build your character and each build plays differently. Fun fun fun. The game still has an active fan base with lots of mods. Game includes a full slate of editors so you can make your own mods or complete adventures. And it has multi-player.

only real financial misstep they had was pricing the 3DS at $250. Their problems is that they still have no clue about online and how to entice third party console support. Have a hard time seeing the Wii U not following the way of their consoles since the GC, three or four good games a year with the system collecting dust between those releases.

29 I would like to encourage everyone that has a game (or games) they play to do a write up of things that are going on with the stuff you play

--------

Meh. My writeups would be boring, because I'm a boring gamer.

My idea of a nice time playing WoW is a quiet evening spent killing skinnables and mining copper to post on the AH for the outrageous prices fools are willing to pay. Sadly, the Hellscream crowd seems to have caught on to my evil gold-making scheme; there's lots of low-priced copper going up lately.

The new larger rocket parts in Kerbal Space Program are still giving me fits. Everything I build seems to be either not powerful enough to get out of low Kerbin orbit or so large that it self-destructs. I did have one largely successful Mun landing with the larger parts, but that seems to have been a fluke.

And I am convinced that when you ask Bejeweled Blitz for a hint, it moves things you aren't looking at around to make a match. Can't prove it, though. Yet. Have to figure out how to look at things I'm not looking at; perhaps I can get some helpful hints from the spooky action at a distance quantum physics folks.

Posted by: Anachronda at August 26, 2012 10:08 AM (1c58W)

30 22 Did you mention Starcraft 2?

----------

Yeah, well, between Starcraft 2 and Mists of Pandaria, I'm either going to have to upgrade my Mac or switch over to my Windows box. My Mac can't run Starcraft 2 and won't be able to run Pandaria. It's a shame; I like my Mac for most things, but it looks like it will no longer be able to serve as both my main desktop and my game box for when I don't want to take the time to fire up the Windows box.

Sadly, I don't think my trusty netbook will be able to run Pandaria, either.

36 I'm still enjoying Disgaea 3 on my Vita four and a half months after release, but it's finally starting to get just a touch old. It's still fun, but I'm starting to feel like it might be more fun to play something else. And it seems that both Ragnarok Odyssey and Persona 4 have been delayed again, so now I'm not sure what that something else will end up being.

The Vita's problem isn't so much a lack of games as it is an overabundance of variety and a lack of depth in those games. There's plenty of games, but that's spread out into like two fighting games, one SRPG, one dungeon crawler, two puzzle games, two sports games, two ninja games, and so on.

I bought my Vita in mid-March, in anticipation of Disgaea 3's mid-April release. I quickly grew bored with two games (Touch My Katamari and Dungeon Hunter) and went back to my PSP for about the last third of that month-long wait.

I might just have to break out the old PSP again for a while. Or maybe I'll give Gravity Rush or Dynasty Warriors a try. Or maybe downloading a PSP game from the PSN would be the way to go. I'll figure it out.

I finally sit down to play ME3 (since I put it off to do still unfinished schoolwork, but the stess of the new home got to me) and it buggered my Xbox which is now out for service and due to come back while I'm at PAX?

Which begs the question, any other Morons going to walk right into the liberal stronghold that is Seattle with me this week for PAX?  I'm trying to ignore the fact that there are 5 panels dealing with being either "Gay or Transvestite" and a geek, and only one panel about being a conservative and/or religious geek (which I think is a trap, because it's run by 2 people who are members of fairly liberal religions.)

My strategy manuals show more missions than load from the game discs I use. I play solo I guess a lesser size ram, speed and graphics card will work just using the game discs rather playing online. I did join Steam but I ran into lots of problems registering the store bought discs plus I think I need to upgrade my machine or get a console to compete online.

There are rumors of a 3rd PAX either international or more centrally located (Austin has been floated.)

If your more broad question is: "Is PAX always held in a city that's a liberal stronghold" I'd say that's a "Yes" (but at least the food is good in Seattle. I don't get much fresh fish in the Midwest.)

I need more missions to play. Need to learn to build ramps on some missions but then I use the fleet units  to compensate for the lack of ground access.

57 #54: Yeah, that is a rather long dry spell. The next upcoming game that really interests me is Ragnarok Odyssey, and that's been pushed back to mid-October. Then Persona 4 comes out the next month. At least, that's the plan for now.

Gravity Rush does look pretty interesting, and from what I've been reading it does seem to have some depth to it. That just might tide me over.

I'm trying to ignore the fact that there are 5 panels dealing with being either "Gay or Transvestite" and a geek, and only one panel about being a conservative and/or religiousgeek (which I think is a trap, because it's run by 2 people who are members of fairly liberal religions.)
But yes, anyone?

My goal if I ever get the opportunity to go to one of these would be to get thrown out of a Bioware/EA panel  by going off on them about the ME3 ending, and asking them what 3 color explosions they are going to give you the option of ending Dragon Age 3 with.

The Wii is pretty much dead. The list of notable releases remaining is pretty short and few are exclusives.

Which means it should be a good time to buy a Wii this Xmas so long as Nintendo cuts the price and moves more games into their bargain line. A dead platform isn't necessarily a bad thing if the available library is sufficient to justify the purchase. You know exactly what you're getting/

I have great doubts about the Wii U. I feel Nintendo has really lost the plot when it comes to consoles and has committed to a product answers a question nobody was asking. Worse, Sony and Microsoft can easily match it by just releasing new software for their existing platforms. Microsoft already has SmartGlass on the way, which will turn your existing iOS or android device into a control surface and display alternate for the Xbox.

On the PS3 side, the Vita already talks to the console for a variety of purposes. Making it a game accessory like the Wii U tablet controller is trivial.

So, due to the cost of the tablet controller, the Wii U is only a minor improvement on the existing HD consoles and will be badly out-powered by Sony and Microsoft's next generation of hardware while lacking the long period the Wii enjoyed on having the novel control input.

Worse, the Sony and Microsoft approach of enabling connections to existing standalone hardware means they can do things the Wii U cannot. The Wii U's controller may look like a tablet but it isn't in the sense it relies on the console for all of the heavy lifting. Get out of wireless range and it becomes a useless lump.

61 Still love Reggie's pleading that the Wii U version of Arkham City is a new game and not the one that everyone bought last year

Posted by: The Dude at August 26, 2012 11:00 AM (tw6Ar)

62 I don't think the Kinect price cut had much to do with sales so much as it was time. The Kinect is a platform rather than an end in of itself. The Kinect exists to sell Kinect games. If the cost of production goes down you cut the price to get more people in a position to buy the lucrative games.

The consoles should see another major round of price cuts before the next generation ships. Both are currently using chip sets made at 45 nm (40 for the PS3 GPU) and much smaller process nodes are now widely available. This mean a big reduction in chip costs and reduced power/cooling needs.

Posted by: epobirs at August 26, 2012 11:02 AM (kcfmt)

63 eh, Kinect sales has tapered off since there hasn't been any decent games coming out that uses the tech lately. As much as fun Action Time Theater was, a sequel isn't going to pull people in to buying it. And factor in that the new version will be out in a year for the new Xbox launch (though I still hold out hope for a better PC version to launch with W , it's a good time to cut the price.

And of course if Crimson Dragon actually comes out and it's as good as I hope, that would be nice and make my year. I do love me some Panzer Dragoon.

Well, no, the primary reason Kinect sales dropped off was that the market of existing Xbox 360 owners was saturated. Everybody likely to add a Kinect at the $150 price had already done so. The bulk of Kinect units moved after the first year has been in bundles with the console. Look for those bundles to get a price cut, too.

The most recent worldwide figure for Xbox 360s sold through is a little over 67 million. (What portion of that can be subtracted for dead first-gen units is not given but is several million at least.) They've sold through about 18 million Kinect units separately and in bundles, which is pretty remarkable for an accessory of that price. The price cut isn't likely to boost the figure much because there just aren't that many interested people left at any price likely to be offered before the next generation hardware ships.

The Kinect as a standalone retail SKU may disappear in the next generation, where it will probably be included in the base package. There will be some reduced cost thanks to integration but some will complain about it. Microsoft is hoping the non-gaming uses will overcome most of those objections as they add voice and gesture input to more of the Xbox firmware.

65 I wouldn't be surprised if Crimson Dragon gets canceled to instead be released as a next generation title. That happens a lot with games late in the platform life cycle. Several early Xbox 360 titles were originally intended for earlier machines.

68 I got an email offer for 12 free days of EVE, I am tempted to go back but then I remember that the game is so insanely full off assholes and griefers. I tried The Secret World and genuinely enjoyed it but after you finish the main area for questing there just isn't much of a reason keep paying a subscription fee. I am surprised there is no mention of Guild Wars 2 coming out in the next few days. I does look fun and no subscription few is a big plus but I am waiting til later to get it. Right now I have been playing Guild Wars 1 exploring areas that I have never really been to before.

69 Probably a dumb question, but if I were to get a game console instead of using my PC, would I have to update as often just to be able to play new games?  If not, do any of the game consoles let you use console commands as you can on the PC keyboard?  (Those have let me rescue my game more than once -- I can be a bit of a klutz at times.)

Recommendations?

You really can't update a console like you can a computer except for maybe hard drive space. Also this generation of consoles is soon going to be coming to an end. The PS4, WiiU and X-Box 720 are all in the works and out for production in the next year or two. Personally I am building a new computer, giving up on AMD finally after the fail that was the FX processors. I am going to try to get a i5 2500k since they seem to be one of the best gaming processor you can get, along with new memory and a 1155 mobo. Luckily I can use the rest. I have kind of given up on consoles, anyone I just upgrade and build new computers over time.

Modern consoles get updates but it's largely automatic. Just the occasional delay before you can start a game. It might be for the console itself or the game may have a patch.

No, you cannot open a command prompt on a console (the PS3 did support running Linux but that was discontinued when Sony realized what a monumentally bad idea that was on subsidized hardware) but you really haven't reason to. Avoiding such things is the entire point of a console game system.

@ Comrade Arthur - Agree on Titan Quest.. still have it on my computer and I'm more likely to load that game up than Diablo III if I'm bored.

Has anyone else tried DayZ?

It's a free mod to the game Arma II (you need both Arma II and the expansion Operation Arrowhead for the mod to work - if you have neither and look to purchase it through Steam it is sold as Arma II - Combined Operations)

This is by far the most realistic survival game I've ever played and although the game is in alpha and still has plenty of bugs to be worked out, I can't stop playing it.

If you do not already own Arma II, I would not advise purchasing it just to play DayZ as the developers have announced they will releasing a standalone version of the game later this year (with no price break for those who purchased Arma II). However, if you have Arma II already and have not heard of DayZ - go download it now.

I have heard about DayZ but apparently it is yet another mod/game that is chalked full of griefers. The big trend now is to grief someone on it and then post the video on youtube. They are making a stand alone game for it so that should cut down on some griefing and hacks like auto targeting/one shot kills and random teleporting.

76 I've been playing The Secret World mmo. Lots of fun. Plenty of youtube of game play and such for it if anyone wants to take a peek.

The atmosphere in TSW (The Secret World) is mucho creepy and well done. There is some pvp in the game but, as usual in games that aren't designed primarily as pvp, it's more of an after thought. The pve is lots of fun though. Character advancement is unique and truly non restricting. Any character can be any/every thing, if the player is willing to put in the time and effort. There are still the standard "jobs" in groups - dps, tank, heal, but a character's place is defined by the "deck" he/she chooses to have up at the time, and his/her character's gear.

Also been playing Hearts of Iron 3 (HOI3). There's a new expansion on the horizon. "Their Finest Hour".

This will add Strategic Overlay to the map, so players can keep track of what they were intending to do with their uber armies, as well as allow allied players in multiplayer to share battle plans with each other to aid in keeping wars more organized.

Also, generals will get the ability to learn traits again. Some traits are being redefined.

And, a new "Custom Game" mode to help those who would wish to skip the "boring" years before war but not loose the customizations they'd make to their country's during those years. "House Rules" will also be able to be imposed by the game host in multiplayer through the Custom Game mode.

And, I'm still playing Rome Total War but with the Europa Barbarorum mod. Heh. I got more bang for buck out of that game than anything else in my life.

Grimmy, what server are you on in TSW? I am on Arcadia, running a Templar AR/Blade named CMartel. The game is truely a hoot, more fun than I have had in an MMO since the early days of EQ1.

78 Poor Knight:

I'm on the "other" RP server... Leviathan? It's been a week or so since I've been able to log in and will be some time until I have the time available again to play. Life's been miserably busy lately.

Character is a Templar. Still messing with various deck layouts but so far partial to the Blood/Fist theme. Nearly got all the first ring finished all the way around for all the weapon types.

Character name is Alistair "Stepper" Case.

I'll shoot you a mssg next time I can squeeze in some play time.
